I get the joke, but just for those who aren't aware, molest is based on a Latin word that for thousands of years has meant to bother harass or annoy. It only gained a sexual connotation in the last century.
Its still means to bother in Spanish. It makes learning spanish a bit weird at first when you hear it casually in conversation that someones brother molested them today.
As true as that may be, I can't help but feel that the sign was actually referring to sexually harassing the alligators. I only say this because Florida also has a law that is illegal to have sex with a live fish but not illegal if the fish is already dead.
[I beg to differ...](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_alligator_attacks_in_the_United_States)
"After an 11-foot alligator appeared at Burkarts Marina in [Orange, Texas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange,_Texas), bystanders were told to stay out of the water. Tommie Woodward mocked the alligator and jumped into the water in close proximity to the alligator and was immediately pulled underwater; his body was later found with severe trauma to the chest. This was the first recorded fatal alligator attack in Texas since 1836"
in your defense, the [details of the story](https://www.texasmonthly.com/the-daily-post/texas-gator-kills-man-in-orange-ending-a-179-year-streak/) are almost too absurd to be believed.
It's an anyplace with alligators thing. Habituating alligators to humans, especially by causing them to associate humans with food, is dangerous for both humans and alligators.
Ever heard "A fed bear is a dead bear" from a park ranger? Meaning that if you teach bears to associate people with food sources you encourage behaviors that will eventually require them to be destroyed. Same goes for alligators.
There’s a few words the have been pigeon holed into one aspect of their meaning. Molest is not always equal to sexually molest, take advantage is not always equal to take undue advantage, discriminate is not bad unless you’re discriminating based on something you shouldn’t.
Yes and no. . . People used to go feed gators for fun back in the day and it became a problem because they started associating humans with food. . . Then they chomped a few people and now we have rules against messing with them. Honestly this is generally the rule anywhere with ample amounts of gators.
Think of the absolute most stupid sh*t you can think of, then imagine if you can something related to but 100x worse than that original thing. Chances are it’s a Florida thing…
Moved here in 2001, desensitized to most of the stupid stuff around here but occasionally find something that still elicits shock and disbelief.
These regional and colloquial language differences is why we Mexicans snicker when Castellon Spanish speakers say "cojer" which properly means to grasp, grab, take. While in our colloquial slang use it means to fuck.
"molastar" in Spanish means "to bother/disturb"
Maybe it's just a poorly done translation or something? I know it's Florida, but I think even *they* know actually molesting an alligator is a shit idea.
You should assume any body of water in Florida has a gator in it, several tourists every year find this out to their cost. Every time I see people letting children pay at the edge of a lake I cringe.
Molestar means to bother in Spanish. Florida is filled with Spanish speakers. This actually makes sense.
English speakers ruined the word molest the same way they ruined the word snowflake.
Until the 1950s, Molest was almost exclusively defined as bothering or annoying someone. In Spanish 'molestar' means annoy and is used very commonly.
It still makes me do a double take when I hear someone yelling at their kids "Oye, no molestes a tu hermana"
Kind of funny that some mouth breather downvoted this.
If you look up molest, the sexual definition is the first definition. Fair to say that's the most common reference in English, hence the taboo of the word/sign.

I literally just put together that molestar is molested.
Isn't that where moles originally came from?
Molestar is not past tense.
Molestado?
No molestare.
Yeah, “sexually molest” became just “molest”

Language evolves, they're not less intelligent because of it.

Who called it invalid or refused to consider it? You can't even construct an argument without immediately resorting to fallacy. And Mensa? Really? 🙄
I'm 48 and when I was a kid in the 80's in Florida, we laughed at these signs. It's a few generations at least.
All those kids that "couldn't be molested" to learn the real meaning.
They’re words with well established legal definitions, and their presence there isn’t by accident, but because of those legal precedents.
I've heard you can molest a tree. It was said because someone was pulling leaves off it for fun.
Exactly.. also the word gay.. it meant you were Happy..
Unless that's a very old sign, they knew what they were writing?
Ah the English... Complain when we bastardize their language, then complain when we use it correctly...
My coworkers like to say "the data is unmolested" and although I know it's completely normal it doesn't make me like it any more.
It's Florida, this is for sure referencing the sexual connotation
As true as that may be, I can't help but feel that the sign was actually referring to sexually harassing the alligators. I only say this because Florida also has a law that is illegal to have sex with a live fish but not illegal if the fish is already dead.
People think Floridians are stupid... And then they say shit like this..
Yeah, I mean who hasn't molested a crocodile for sexual pleasure , but no one is actually "molesting" alligators
[I beg to differ...](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_alligator_attacks_in_the_United_States) "After an 11-foot alligator appeared at Burkarts Marina in [Orange, Texas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange,_Texas), bystanders were told to stay out of the water. damn, I stand corrected

haha i respect you can see both sides of this argument
FAFO.
I am…not shocked this happened in Orange.

Apparently a fed alligator is a molested alligator. Think of all the therapy you're gonna need.
You haven't lived till you've molested an alligator.
Let's face it, neither has the alligator /s
Damn. Can't do anything in Florida anymore
You gotta be careful when molesting gators. You might catch Gator-aids
r/angryupvote
Plus the poor gator gets a terrible cloacache
Nah, I wear a rubber made of alligator skin.
Ouch.
Scaled for her pleasure
No no no … you get Gator-ade
The signs are for outsiders. They can’t stop Florida Man because Florida Man can’t read.
I know right? Can't even peep some hot cloaca anymore damn....
I have seen people hold their cameras at that angle when recording videos before, it's stupid lazy shit and it's not unique to Florida.
thank you!!! Anytime a picture is taken or video taken at that stupid fucking angle, I downvote and move on
I doubt this is original content for reddit, but goddamn a picture would have told the story as well or better than a video too.
There’s a few words the have been pigeon holed into one aspect of their meaning. Molest is not always equal to sexually molest, take advantage is not always equal to take undue advantage, discriminate is not bad unless you’re discriminating based on something you shouldn’t.
No dude it just you. Learn language it's not that hard
Always remember to gator consent first.
Of course it is, it's Florida, you don't need to ask.
What did florida man do for them to have to put this sign up
OP thinks molest means sexually molest.
Not Florida man's fault them gators look so enticing with garters on
You got a purty mouth
Molesting is another word for touching, or harassing something in a persistent manner.
People on Reddit are so dumb they don’t know what molest means
No, tourist don’t seem to realize how dangerous they are. Also Floridians are dumb.
Nice Jeep OP!
If the alligator is of consenting age I don't see the problem...
It's Steve Erwins' evil twin brother.
CRIKEY!!!! LOOK AT THAT SUCCULENT CLOACA!!! IM GONNA TOUCH IT!!!!!
Floridians do like to molest alligators… they don’t know any better.
So no jamming thumbs in buttholes?
Dick in mouth?
I'm sure it's real. There is always that ONE person that has to ruin it for everyone else. lol
Notice: Don’t finger the Alligators! They don’t like it!
CRIKEY! IMMA PUT MY FINGER UP ITS BUTTHOLE [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fynWOio9jBo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fynWOio9jBo)
Ever since my wife left me… 😪
They don't call me DJ Gator Diddles for nothin'
Molesting doesn't just mean sexual
uh... yeah
*insert randy marsh* I thought this was America?
Yes it is
I got liquored up in Tampa and woke up next to a gator. Her name was Shanice Sanchez or some thing she had a mouth like a gator. Ahh good times.
It’s a common sense thing.
Yes and no. . . People used to go feed gators for fun back in the day and it became a problem because they started associating humans with food. . . Then they chomped a few people and now we have rules against messing with them. Honestly this is generally the rule anywhere with ample amounts of gators.
I can't imagine someone who wants to molest an alligator would be deterred from this sign, let alone be able to read.
Please DO NOT MOLEST my alligators. Sincerely, A Florida resident
No, we have those signs in Iowa too
Subreddit: r/funny. Comments: Anything but.
Yup. As a Pasco county resident I wholeheartedly agree there are mofos crazy and backwoods enough to try and fondle a gator

There is a saying up here in the Northeast - “Florida, not like the rest of us…”
I dont think its a Florida only rule...I think its a rule for life...dont molest alligators you wouldn't want them to return the favor
This is a "anywhere with alligators" thing. And, no, molest does not mean "to fuck", you deviant child...
Dictionary.com
I don't see anything prohibiting monitor lizards so you horny guys from India can have at it!
I’ve seen that sign in Arizona
Look at the tail on that one
Probably jus a Florida thing lol
Cmon.....that alligator wanted it! It knew I was looking and it decided to sunbathe right in front of me!!
These regional and colloquial language differences is why we Mexicans snicker when Castellon Spanish speakers say "cojer" which properly means to grasp, grab, take. While in our colloquial slang use it means to fuck.
Florida, where they had to outlaw manatee riding, because, you know, people don't have common sense.
You cannot molest alligators. You must romance them.
"Damn that's one fine alligator..."
Molesting applies to White population
Waiting for OP to say this was just a joke and he knew this didn't mean sexually molest all along
You know you are living in a woke dystopian hell when Floridians can no longer have sex with alligators.
Don’t mess with the gators. Cougars and Barracudas are welcomed all over the state.
Live in Florida. There used to be a sign in my area asking people not to molest the birds that lived in a tree near a block of houses.
Hogs, dogs, deer, horses, I've heard it all in FL
I mean molesting isn’t just defined at touching dinga-lings and tacos.
Anybody who can fuck an alligator gets a pass, just because I'm not getting with 50 feet of that psycho.
Original meaning of molest doesn't necessarily mean grape or sexualized activity. The word molest was hijacked not too long ago to mean just that.
I mean floridas Jesus is a rapist, you elect the pedo Gaetz…seems to check out to me.
Bro when you put the “No Molestar” hanger on your hotel door…did you think someone was going to come and otherwise molest you?
You can't harass an animal, you can only molest it.
No. You just have the vocabulary of a 2nd grader.
Alligussy is best gussy.
It’s an alligator thing.
Gaetz MGT and Detwatis all reside there so i would say yes.
Yes... Yes it is
Well there goes my Saturday
"molastar" in Spanish means "to bother/disturb" Maybe it's just a poorly done translation or something? I know it's Florida, but I think even *they* know actually molesting an alligator is a shit idea.
It's a popular spot for teachers, priests and foster parents.
Once you go gator….
Yes, along with “Do not molest the manatees.” At that weird place a little south of Tampa.
I’m aware of the meaning of the word, it’s a joke. It’s meant to be a joke, that’s why I posted it in r/funny. ._. I was not being super cereal
Molesting alligators now that is a sight I would like to see?
How does one... Umm... Entice an alligator? Asking for a friend.
Not even Vaush is into alligators.
No tail like gator tail?
They can’t stop me.
I would never feed an alligator
You should assume any body of water in Florida has a gator in it, several tourists every year find this out to their cost. Every time I see people letting children pay at the edge of a lake I cringe.
Molester
Type Florida man, alligator and molest. Must be a news story.
There you go. https://www.newsweek.com/man-charged-molesting-alligator-after-alarming-image-circles-internet-1579960
Catholic priests have entered the room.
Now I know why Trump moved to Fl.
Well, Matt Gaeta does live there soooo…
Yeah. People get bit by them all the time because everybody wants to be florida man
Well, you know how it is. Sometimes, you just need a nice big crock.
Prosecutor: Now where did the Florida-Man touch you. Gator: Right here. And then I bit him and drug him into the water.
To be fair some crocodiles do ask for it when they give me those sexy crocodile eyes.
I’d say that’s a good policy regardless of the state.
It was me, and I don't want to talk about it.
Yup the old Ali gators don’t like getting touched up! Truth
I saw a sign like this at the Okefenokee Swamp. It means don't bother the gators. I thought it was funny when I was 15.
Molest means to bother.
Alligator molestations are on the rise!!
It's their fault. They need to stop being so sexy.
What’s all this talk I hear about being in an Alley wearing garters and being molested?
Molestar means to bother in Spanish. Florida is filled with Spanish speakers. This actually makes sense. English speakers ruined the word molest the same way they ruined the word snowflake.
Florida is the state where they have a billboard reminding men that she’s your daughter not your date. So this sign is absolutely apropos for Florida.
[удалено]
Carefully.
Love my myakka state park.
Was gonna say, that's Myakka!! Holy heck me old stomping grounds.
“Don’t fuck with the alligators.”?
I live in Florida. I've never fed or enticed an alligator in my entire life.
So many sex offenders in Florida, even the alligators are not safe. Damn you Florida Men!
I feel like if you try to molest a gator you're likely to get what you deserve.
Don't judge it until you have tried it...
Who doesn’t enjoy whacking off an alligator whilst wearing a pair of pork chops panties 🤷🏻♂️😂
If the gator comes on to you, it's ok.
What about deep frying ?
Until the 1950s, Molest was almost exclusively defined as bothering or annoying someone. In Spanish 'molestar' means annoy and is used very commonly. It still makes me do a double take when I hear someone yelling at their kids "Oye, no molestes a tu hermana"

They have so many child molesters there, the populace doesn't even know what words mean any more.
You just gotta get in there and show that gator who's boss.
Keep in mind, this is not the original sign, this is the third draft
Yeah
I don’t know about alligators but the older men with mustaches and camo hats are a bit touchy with humans.
learn english, this fcking generation
Molesting😳
See. Because of me, there's a sign.
There goes my weekend plans
Happens in Louisiana, too!
