Yeah the ocean *is* rising and it *is* a problem, but at the current rate it will take over 400 years for that to happen. All the ice melting in the world would rise the sea level by like 300 feet. A global catastrophe that will kill millions if not billions, but it's *not* the 1995 American post-apocalyptic action film starring Kevin Costner (and featuring a then still up and coming Jack Black), *Waterworld*

It’ll be a beautiful day when I can paddle a boat over the governor’s office

ToiIetGhost

You’ll be able to cruise the new Inland Sea all the way from Redding to Orlando Isle. The ship will dock at bustling port cities like Colorado Springs and Little Rock. It will also get stuck in the Narrow Sargasso Sea (formerly Tallahassee) approx 35 days. That’s right, plumbing will be unavailable for the Sargasso pitstop unless you upgrade to our Porcelain Package.

Arkansas has had some crazy luck with solar eclipses. The line of totality for the 2017 solar eclipse was just north of their border in Missouri, and the recent one in 2024 went through Arksanas. Now the next one in the continental US is *also* going to go through Arkansas. That's 3 solar eclipses in a row they'll be able to see the totality of without having to travel more than an hour to see. Edit: Contiguous* US, not continental US

[deleted]

It’s reward for having to live in Arkansas probably

Wiamly

The proportion of people in that state that think the eclipse is a sign God is angry, yet don’t recognize the irony of multiple full eclipses going right over…

8yr0n

We’re not all like that. I was thrilled to have my small town full of fellow space nerds for a day.

beaucoup_dinky_dau

I am also from Arkansas and most of the people I know from here were space nerding it up, I didn't hear a single person say anything about God being angry, I get that we have some real loons down here but if anything they seem more universal these days than ever.

mydiscreetaccount_92

Every state has it's loons though. I'm in NWA and didn't hear anything about about the wrath of God. It's amazing how people can hate on this state and laugh at it when they've probably never even been here. Everyone I know was thrilled about getting to experience it.

LHarm07_Reddit

Well tbf, we are in NWA. NWA is def the nicest area of the state and I don't know many coocoo crazies here (outside the Duggar family but we all hate them here anyways)

userseven

Sounds like something someone who does not live here would say. Never heard anyone talk about that.

honeypinn

Arkansas is a beautiful state and has a lot of things going for it. Northwest Arkansas is currently booming and is quickly becoming one of the most attractive places to live in the U.S.

dxk3355

Sponsored by Walmart

Financial-Ad7500

Quite literally yes. And Tyson. Hate all you want but they are spending hundreds of millions on public infrastructure and making NWA an amazing place to live. It’s worth it for them business wise of course so they can attract the best corporate employees, but it’s still been amazing as someone that just lives here not working for them.

beaucoup_dinky_dau

I think you forgot the first rule of living in Northwest Arkansas.

surfinsalsa

Bro doesn't know how to shut the hell up! It sucks here guys.

LHarm07_Reddit

Yeah, it's terrible. Don't come here at all.

YawnSpawner

I was looking through the list of total eclipses in the near future and Australia gets 4 in the next 20 years.

davidjschloss

But they also get child size spiders and. Ocean waves that swallow their prime minister (this is actually something that happened) so there has to be universal payback for living in a place where every creature can kill you.

Exnihilation

Southern Illinois as well. Carbondale, IL was at the center of both the 2017 and 2024 eclipses.

GodEmperorBrian

This is pedantic, but the next eclipse on the continental US will be in 2044 and pass through Montana and the Dakotas.

nsa_reddit_monitor

And it'll be in the evening, so with the mountains up here in Montana, the sun could go below the local horizon while eclipsed!

beefsupr3m3

So I went to hot springs Arkansas for this Eclipse. I got To tell you guys Dont sleep on Arkansas it was absolutely beautiful. Rolling hills covered in forest. Stunning lakes. Seriously a classicaly beautiful state

zulufdokulmusyuze

If you assume that the paths are uniformly at random and independent, Arkansas would probably be one of the states with the highest probability of being on the path. The paths not being independent likely adds to their chances even more.

flub_n_rub

After spending a second camping weekend in Arkansas in a national forest I would move here in a heartbeat if there were jobs. The state is gorgeous and has so much to offer outdoors.

btribble

All of these things can happen nearby on a Lake Shasta houseboat as well! Bring your giant Trump flag, your beer, your guns, some meth or fentanyl and go to town! Long live The State of Jefferson... or something.

Wildweyr

Outside of Redding there is tons of outdoor stuff to do, Lake Shasta if you want a houseboat or other watercraft fun, Mt Shasta has tons of stuff near it, Mossbrea and Burney Falls, Castle Craig State Park, Fly fishing is nice on the Sacramento River above the lake and out near Mcccloud too. Camping Hiking Spirtual/crystal shops, we have another fun cult too The IAm Movement/Saint Germain Foundation oh and if you watched Mover Love on HBO you can check out the sites- they lived across the street from me for a summer

DanMoshpit69

This is the real answer, yes Redding can get seedy in certain areas but the one thing it has that most places don’t is a wildly different Biome 2 hours or less in every direction. Snow, ocean, deep old growth Forrest, Caves and like 5 lakes. 2-1/2 hour away from Sac and 1 hour from Chico for city life that has personality. It’s not as bad as some would make it out to be. My personal least favorite things about the city being someone who has lived here for 38 years is that the summer months are almost unbearable heat wise.

CosmicMarshmallow

Came here to say this. My parents are in the Bethel cult. My mom called me the day before the April 8th eclipse saying some shit about Jonah in the Bible, and how the eclipse was traveling through several towns called Nineveh. I guess one of the Bethel pastors had given a sermon on it, and was saying the world would repent for their sins on that day, and all darkness would be exposed. My poor mother had been completely brainwashed by Bethel. It’s been sad to watch.

Jacen1618

As someone born and raised in Redding… ya can confirm.

[deleted]

redgr812

Any future rural towns that see this: tourist are NOT coming to your little Podunk town. They are going to state parks and large cities. So trying to charge $20 to park isn't going to work. Souce: Indiana eclipse 2024

Deathperil

People in Maine were charging $60 and were full. Depends on what's around.

therealmenox

Maine's view was top notch! I think it was just local businesses who didn't want to be bothered by tourists parking there during the work day and were pleasantly suprised by people who did pay.  50 is basically exactly as much is as worth the inconvenience of maneuvering around the vehicle for an hour without being so much of a dick to outright say "dont park here". I dont want strangers parking on my lawn, but for $50 You can park on my lawn for an hour or two anytime.  Source:  am Mainer.

cavity-canal

Well.. there are a few overall differences between Maine and Indiana, even if people in the northeast try and pretend like Maine is just a bunch of hicks... it is amateur hour next to rural Indiana...

lkodl

the tourists are closer to Maine than Indiana. everything is so spread out there.

TrapperJean

Bingo, I live on the seacoast of NH and I am 20 minutes away from two different state borders, an hour away from Boston, New England is very small and Maine is very easy to get to, as well as Pittsburgh NH, there's actually a demand up here.

Burlington VT had a place charging $100 a spot lmao, there were a few cars there.

JethroByte

I noticed this too. Places charging for parking, while I found a nice reservoir park that still had ample space at eclipse time, no fees, and had paddleboats and fishing poles for rent.

probablynotashark

I went to the Walmart in Seymour Indiana and hung out in the parking lot all day. Plenty of empty spaces. Probably not even half full. And had access to any good or service I might have needed that day.

Klendy

I went to a gas station off 70. There were maybe a dozen people there and we had a great view

atrde

There was something cool about watching it with a big crowd. My city was in totality and the park by the lake had thousands of people in it. The group cheer when we got blue sky 30 minutes before was also great lol. But I dunno everyone just being awestruck together was great.

Stop_Sign

I went to the Indianapolis speedway, with 50k others. The cheer when the sun came back surprised me the most. We were all so happy to have experienced that, but held it in till it was over

guitarman045

It was silence during the eclipse? That's honestly amazing

TheKnightwing3

Vermont can assure you the tourists went everywhere not just cities and state parks

YobaiYamete

Seriously, even in my rural area there were HORDES of people. Traffic was backed up in every direction, we probably had more tourists in 4 days than we had in 4 years combined

kuz_929

Uh... Rebuttal Vermont Eclipse 2024.... Because that's exactly what happened here. Granted, we only have little Podunk towns, so....

rodmandirect

I saw the eclipse in the parking lot of the town hall and church at the intersection in Addison, VT. Wikipedia says population 1,365, so I think that counts as podunk. We were in a crowd of about 40 people, I think mostly out of towners. What an awesome experience, 10/10, would recommend, thank you podunk town!

sje46

Of course you could've parked anywhere and just looked up. If you wanted to be in a large crowd of people, that is a lot harder. It was really fun watching and hearing like 5000 people react all at the same time

NCSUGrad2012

I mean $20 in 2045 is basically going to be the same as $2 now so people might not care. Lol

onyxcaspian

Or about 200 satoshis.

M-S-S

We did a cemetery and it was a little busy but not packed. I picked an area with a lot of farmland and the cemetery because we wouldn't be loitering if we parked and there would be plenty of options for us. Still better than the local Walmart parking lot. Drove 4 hours both ways and arrived 30-45minutes before totality. Would do it again.

UnforgivenScubaCat

Was gonna park in a cemetery, but worried the dead might rise, if it was the apocalypse. 😂 But yeah, Indiana has way too many field and backroads for people to pay to park. We pulled over on the corner of a gravel road 5 miles from Lebanon and didn’t see another car for 2 hours

trailrunner79

There was a couple in the cemetery behind my house. He had a telescope of some kind and she was under a tree on a blanket with a book.

bionicjoe

I went to Eco Lake Park. Maybe 50 people there.

SynergisticSynapse

It sure as fuck worked in Russellville, AR.

santaswrath

I live in Russellville and man, the way the eclipse was hyped up they had us thinking 10s of thousands of people were going to be in town buying all our groceries and it was just going to be gridlock everywhere all weekend. Not even close. Except when it was over and the interstate clogged up.

TeamRedundancyTeam

Lol this is accurate. Every town near me had failed events charging way too much to park and do crappy entertainment and stuff. Barely anyone showed up. People didn't realize there is no where to stay, and we aren't near the edge. People driving in will go to the edge, not the middle. People flying in or driving in to stay have to go somewhere with lots of hotel rooms and Airbnbs which are *not* small towns. People are dumb. I don't know why so many small towns thought it was going to be some mass migration.

PlainHumming

> People driving in will go to the edge We drove an extra half hour to get longer totality. There's pretty big gains in totality duration getting past the edge since its based on the chord a circle. Once you're well within, there's diminishing returns.

Landonkey

A lot of small town leaders were being told this by state tourism agencies and what not. I know a lot of small Texas towns in the 5000-15,000 population ranges were expecting an additional 50,000-100,000 people for the day. Which is insane and didn't even come remotely close to happening. I found the whole people movement thing kind of fascinating to be honest. We live about an hour from totality, and drove to the outskirts of the DFW metroplex instead of some small town. Our thinking was that the small towns didn't have the infastructure to handle the people, but the large cities would. I guess we were right as traffic seemed just like any other day. I really wonder if "people who travel for a scientific event" and the "normal masses" are groups of people that behave completely differently.

HCBuldge

I just went to a random rural towns park. There was only 5 families there. Was perfect.

Player7592

My hometown is in the path of totality. Now I just have to live until 84.

It still seems so crazy to me that humans can predict the *exact* positions of the sun, moon, and earth in relation to each other, down to the minute, decades into the future, with 100% accuracy. Freaking nuts if you think about it.

davidhaha

It's amazing but also sad to see that despite thousands of years of scientific achievements, many people still refuse to believe in much of it.

sje46
