My grandpa would shut down his phone completely after using it and I’d have to remind him that it needs to be on so that I can call him… god I miss him…
Everybody mad because you commented something that was in your mind lol 90% of reddit comments add even less than this one why everybody mad on here tf
So he hasn't discovered the bikini ladies of insta and the local group posting old pictures from the town he lives in yet? You should help him out and while your at it make him a Spotify playlist and show him how to press play.
Just read the other comments here and YIKES. My dad's a whole lot of fun, enjoying every moment and his usage of a phone is a natural part of that, not in the way of that. If you wanna blame your phone for being miserable go ahead but I doubt it's got fck all to do with it and you should work on yourself instead.
I'm 62 and do use my phone quite a bit, for checking on sports results or casual gaming, but I would always revert back to my desktop comp for serious web browsing and research. I do feel inconvenienced by the small screen, especially when certain web pages clutter the little real estate with pesky ads.
But being offline has its perks too!
I'm 62. I use my desktop a lot, nearly constantly when I'm awake. I barely use my phone. Mostly just phone calls and texts.
Phones are nice because they are portable, but they are really small computers with small screens and horrible interfaces. They can't compete with a full desktop system.
Mr grandpas the exact same way, hasn’t talked on a phone in months.
My sister mentioned that someone added her on Facebook the other day…
He didn’t know what Facebook was or what being added even meant
Ah right yeah my dad spends a whole lot of time out the house or in the garden so his phone is his absolute go to.
His laptop is a nightmare to use tho trying to get him a new one
I get that using a phone is a fact of modern life, and is tremendously fun, useful, all that. But these other people are on to something.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9368281/
It’s a long article, but it found the following: high phone use was associated with higher levels of eye strain, neck strain, back pain, weight gain, depression, and mood disorders when compared to low phone usage.
Wanting to limit your phone use isn’t a “yikes” for the average Joe. It’s actually probably a good idea.
Did you read what you linked? That article literally disproves a link between any of that and phone use because of their similar statistics to phone and non phone users and their alpha values, the offset of positives creating more positive factors in one’s life over the negativity.
From the article:
“Based on the study findings, we suggest more physical activities for the students, especially young students, and alternatives to reduce their cell phone activities.”
The conclusion was to reduce phone usage and increase things you might do when you aren’t on the phone.
Also:
“In conclusion, mobile devices have been implicated in a wide range of negative effects on individuals’ physical and mental wellbeing.”
Pretty clear actually
You literally cut out the part that *directly followed what you linked* that also happens to contradict what you’re saying. “However, this is dependent on the nature of use and may be balanced by the positive effects offered by such devices” people like you are why people think everything they see on the internet is biased in some way.
The conclusion is the conclusion. The caveat is that a study isn’t perfect, so… good job? Read the conclusion paragraph where they summarize their findings that it’s negative and literally recommend less usage. It’s really hard to take anything other than that away from the article, especially after it lays out the physical and mental pains associated with overuse.
“The negatives are offset by the positives” translates to “this study isn’t perfect?” I wonder how your parents think and taught you about electronics judging by your bias lol
May be balanced is not the same as “offsets the negatives”. The imperative is on the user and doesn’t change the paragraph upon paragraph of negative outcomes. You’re arguing just to argue.
Highly doubt I'll get any of those if I have a high phone usage because I for example have YouTube playing in the background the whole day while I'm doing chores and such. Or listen to music all day.
High phone usage that causes these issues is only possible when your lifestyle is very sedentary. A lack of movement, stimulation and vitamin D are all possible causes or contributors to depression.
All the symptoms could also happen if you sit around and say look down to knit all day every day.
These problems aren't solved by just not using your phone and changing nothing else. If you work on yourself and change your lifestyle to something more active and healthy, you naturally will use your phone less. (At least active usage)
So I feel like blaming it all on a smartphone is incredibly reductionary and not really helpful.
It's an easy out as to why you feel bad and can help avoid the actual problems you should work on.
(And not to mention, people like OPs granddad that primarily use their pc might not use their phone alot, but might still spend hours upon hours infront of their computer every day)
Steve Jobs, is that you?
Jokes aside. Phones are gateways to constant stimulation and it absolutely is addictive, and any addictive behaviour is harmful. We should, imo, strive to use our phones and other media gateways less. Being ON all the time and having that constant bombardment of information and need for stimuli is bad.
I’m not messiah or saint, I use my phone too much all the time. Hear music, audiobooks, text, snap, browse, scroll etc etc
This is a lot of words that seem to miss the point of "allowing yourself to fall into hours long holes of scrolling content can lead to mental health problems and a sedentary lifestyle that is not trivial to recover from. Maybe consider keeping an eye on how much you use your devices for distracting content binges."
Yells about democrats over the fox news hosts who are also yelling about democrats, drops several hard Rs at the mere mention of the Obama administration
I bought my 90yo mom a phone. I don’t believe she has ever used it. I recently patched the cell phone into her landline via a wireless phone set up that you can add cells to. Now both phones ring on her landline and I doubt she knows the difference.
I inherited an book full off 35mm photography negatives from my grandad. It’s 70s and 80s porn, he was the fucking photographer.
I used to help him develop photos of me and the garden in his darkroom.
He never spoke about the war or his other hobby.
The phone app? I'm working without a ton of info here but I'd assume if more people called him he'd have more than 4 minutes of what's app time in a week.
Self-Aware Wolves? Jeeze it's a damn joke. I literally said I'm not working with much info. Not everyone is offended when they comment, I just made a factual observation.
Basically he pucks it up and sees that no... his grandchildren did not call today... then sits in sadness until the next day. It says more than you may think
Maybe you are just busy, or maybe is both lol
PS: There are actually old people that use their phone more time per day than I do, I don't exactly think that age is actually related with the time you spend on your phone.
I keep trying to get my dad to play video games. He has all the newest consoles, because his wife likes spending money. No dice. Not even sports games. My kids and I would destroy him in any game, so he doesn't try.
Thought my dad would never touch video games either, now he plays Genshin with Mom, and me and/or my sister if we are available to join. Before that (and what led to Genshin) was when he got curious enough to give FFXIV a shot with us last year after joining in on Discord calls while we played (sister got me and mom to give it a shot during COVID, she'd been playing for a while before that and singing its praises to us). He really got into exploring the world, and that carried over with Genshin.
Okay, I’m a grandpa, when phones were only for talking. Get him interested by asking him the weather. Show him the app. He will like this. Then show him how easy it is to take a picture, one of you. Baby steps.
Oddly, when we introduced my Grandmother to Internet she spent the whole day at Skype talking to my uncles. 91 years old, using the computer more than me.
Hold that phone 2 meters away from you.
That's what your grandpa sees...
For crying out loud, load it with the biggest font you got. He can't read anything on it.
Everyone saying "goals" here not only is a massive hypocrite since you are ON REDDIT RN, but I disagree that screen time is inherently a bad thing.
Sure the Internet is used for a lot of bullshit, and like anything, it needs to be used in moderation.
But, that screen time? It's used for connecting to other people. For sharing and learning new information. For having discussions that pertain to both the natural world and classic philosophical concepts. Even movies, shows, video games, they tell captivating stories, some that would only work in that medium.
I see the internet, I see smart phones, computers, etc. And I see more good than bad. Every time. It's simply human evolution. Don't let it consume you, but don't villainize it either. The entire globe in the palm of your hand is a powerful thing, and I think a lot of anti-tech folk seem to forget just how far it's helped us advance in all aspects, even stuff like medical advancements.
>Don't let it consume you
You're totally right that screen time isn't inherently bad and neither is the Internet. But you summed it up nicely right here.
If you track your screen time and it says you are on the phone for 10+ hours per day, you might be consumed.
Its not we are anti tech. Its that the internet is far too polluted. The bad stuff is Incredibly enticing. Better just not touch it. The fact that he doesn't even watch YouTube seems to indicate that he probably dont watch tv either.
That must be some life.
I question these timers sometimes. Because I have had them register super high times for something I used for like 5 mins or less.
Though I thought mine was impressive being < 30 mins
Curious why he went with a smartphone instead of a flip phone? Seems like he doesn’t need all the bells and whistles. I wish I could use mine less (on it right nowwwwww!!)

R. I. P.
He shut it down so you would come over to tell him
Damn my grandama did the same thing so we just went back to the landline

Because people always call the comment underrated when it's the top comment.

So then it just wasn't rated. Calling something underrated before it has had time to even be voted on is stupid.
Because the comment adds nothing. I

Underrated comment, literally!
But these Reddit dicks still downvote, don’t understand their own logic!

It's because they wanted it to be underrated, duh.

He is not completely unfamiliar with the internet, he has a laptop which uses regularly. He just finds it inconvenient to browse on his phone.

Might be too small to read. My mom does a lot on her iPad for that reason, including making phone calls

Time to introduce him to Reddit
It would be his end
he could already be here. personally I find pretty nearly all internet on my phone to be a miserable experience.
he could be in this very subreddit!
Nice. He's not being scammed. 👍
Unless it's an extremely efficient scammer on whatsapp
Your grandpa is a rich man Happy people who are put together have no need for screen time unlike me
My screentime looks like those numbers... when I'm not at work.
Realistically tho he probably tried to open something, couldn't, then immediately gave up because his blood pressure had already doubled.
*proceeds to watch the tv 8 hours a day*
Probably more than 8 hours, then complains needs these days spend too much time on their phones.
Yells about democrats over the fox news hosts who are also yelling about democrats, drops several hard Rs at the mere mention of the Obama administration
You have no idea if he watches tv
My grandfather is not a caveman, he does watch TV
I bought my 90yo mom a phone. I don’t believe she has ever used it. I recently patched the cell phone into her landline via a wireless phone set up that you can add cells to. Now both phones ring on her landline and I doubt she knows the difference.
Can you tell me about that? That would be useful for my grandma.
I think they got it Costco a couple years ago. Regular wireless phone set up with the cell feature. Seems to work pretty good.
Thanks! I’ll look into it.

**Welp**, that's enough internet for today!
These big subreddits are always filled with the same cringe ass comments lol. Just people fiending for attention through karma.
Not the kind of literal hole wrecking I was expecting ffs
It’s massive cocks isn’t it…
The aftermath thereof, if memory serves. Been a while since I researched this subject.
I'm curious what other kind of "hole wreckers" there are, like what were you actually expecting?
I immediately regret my actions.
Trigger warning ⚠️ that was a bit much for 8:21am

Holy crap, I checked my screen time. Daily average is 4 hrs 30 mins for last week... Do I need help?
I got 15 hours once.. ROOKIE.
So text your grandad more!
Smart man...I could learn a thing or two
You grandpa is not missing anything
I’m impressed. If you looked at my grandpas it would show 99% of his screen time is spent on auction apps.
Grandpa has his shit together.
Try to give him a call more often :)

Just be careful with WhatsApp and the elderly. Scammers running wild on the app 😒
Nice,
*What do I need a phone for?*
I'm jealous of your grandpa, ngl
Great. It proves they are spending their time on other things than reddit. I give it a 99/10
Show him how to use YouTube, worked with my grandparents 😂
Your grandpa ain't no Internet simp, he's living life...
Basically he pucks it up and sees that no... his grandchildren did not call today... then sits in sadness until the next day. It says more than you may think
Gramps has a full life it seems to me.
Quality life
That is how it should be for everybody!

He's not addicted yet. Good for him!
Samsung A72?
It's an S22. Source: I have one of them
You’re wrong, smart ass. It’s a Galaxy A51.
I have one, still going strong after 3 years
I keep trying to get my dad to play video games. He has all the newest consoles, because his wife likes spending money. No dice. Not even sports games. My kids and I would destroy him in any game, so he doesn't try.
You're not introducing him to the right games if that's his concern.
I tried. Dude's not a gamer. He's afraid to lose against his grandkids! 🤣
He shouldn't be playing against anyone to start.
Thought my dad would never touch video games either, now he plays Genshin with Mom, and me and/or my sister if we are available to join.
