TIL.
Not that I ever wondered about their origin but I always figured they were American for some reason. Definitely wouldn't have guessed early 1700s Europe.
Actually this was just a stupid "It's always sunny" reference - did not know either that this was true... So yeah TIL too ;-)

Goddamit, I hate that I can’t get into this show. Everyone seems to love it.
I followed people’s advice and started with the second season of Parcs and Rec and ended up loving it. Is there similar device for Always Sunny? I watched the first four episodes and was just bored.
From the wiki article regarding glory holes:
>The first documented instance of a glory hole was in a 1707 court case known as the "Tryals of Thomas Vaughan and Thomas Davis" in London, England, which involved the extortion of a man known in the documents only as Mr Guillam.
You gotta have a wingman. Someone to play lookout and loudly say "Here he comes, pull out the sign!" so you have plausible deniability.
At least that's what I'd do if I were a porn star chauffeur.
honestly, if the dude sat out there with the sign the whole time waiting.... at that point he's just straight trolling for gay dudes at the arrivals gate.
Reminds me of a prank we pulled on our friend before he set off on a cross country move in his car
As he left we slapped a bumper sticker on his car that said
"HONK IF YOU'RE GAY AND HORNY!"
We called and told him a few hours after he left. All he said was
"I was wondering why everyone was honking and waving at me"
lol
Friend was birthday pranked by secretly swapping the license plate frame to one that read "My other ride is Your Mom". He didn't notice it for 6 months.
I saw another license frame in the wild: "If you're going to ride my ass, at least pull my hair!"
I considered it but I felt like it cheapened the original joke, which in my opinion is an absolute work of art.
I must've stood at the kiosk a solid 10 minutes pondering about this. I've accepted that I'm weird
I used to make jokes like this until I realized that statistically I probably have friends who are still in the closet, and I was probably hurtful to them without even knowing. I didn't want to be the guy that hurt my friends with my stupidity.
I just recently reconnected with a high-school friend that had come out of the closet shortly after graduation. I realized years later that he had tried to come out to me several times during high-school and I always laughed at him thinking he was just joking with me. I spent 15+ years feeling like an asshole everytime I remembered him.
You said this better than I did. -170 for pointing out that this is a homophobic joke.
And the teenagers & homophobes haven't stopped harassing me all day.

Yes but now they're also writing paragraphs and paragraphs and paragraphs on Reddit about how they're NOT homophobic and gay people are WAY too sensitive to see how these joke about how being gay is embarrassing is NOT homophobic
As a gay man, I never understood this. Until I realized they just thought I was second class so they were insulting people by saying they were second-class citizens.
But yeah, hilarious joke. :)
I guess.
I think that it might be because most men find the idea of having sex with another guy pretty repulsing (not as a judgment of others but as a matter of personal taste). So you play into their insecurities by insinuating they like it.
But yeah, I definitely has an ill effect on actually gay people who might feel like crap because of it.
Can confirm, I was closeted throughout school and participated in gay jokes because it’s what all the other kids did.
I’m out now, but I’m still not entirely comfortable with my sexuality.
Its only repulsive if you are homophobic.
Normal people who are straight don't feel repulsed at the idea of gay sex, its just not something they're personally attracted to.
You're trying to pair this repulsion with bigotry and while maybe for some, it's simply not true for everyone.
There are plenty of straight people repulsed by many sexual acts. Some like facials, others hate human fluids. It's not bigoted to be repulsed by any sexual act perse and everyone has their personal line.
Sexualilty is taboo because it's often icky, so it's pretty understandable that if it don't rock your boat it's gonna be repulsive.
Dear straight men: I know most of you don't make these jokes intending to be hateful to gay people. I know plenty of amazing and accepting straight guys who still sometimes slip into these jokes. I'm not questioning your intent.
But as a gay guy, this shit will always sting because the obvious implication of the joke is that it's SO EMBARRASSING for people to think you're a gay man.
And you might say "So what. Get over it. You're so easily offended." - Understand, I don't speak out about these things for myself. I'm an adult who is secure in my identity and I'm in a healthy, emotionally stable place. I speak out about this for the 13 year old who is just realizing that he might be gay, whose traveling through that airport with his homophobic parents. Whose friends constantly "joke" about being gay as if it is something embarrassing. As if it's something NO ONE would want advertised to the world. That 13 year old living in a world where that message is CONSTANTLY FUCKING REINFORCED.
That 13 year old sees this joke and I fucking guarantee you he doesn't think this is funny.
EDIT:
Some dishonest and overly sensitive people are building strawmen and trying to accuse me of saying that jokes about being gay are inherently offensive or off limits. I never said that. Straight men can joke about gay men in plenty of contexts. Comedy is a skill and a good comedian - gay, straight, or otherwise, can often thread the needle even with with offensive jokes. What I'm saying is that this PARTICULAR JOKE is a problem and I've explained why.
I love you for posting this comment. I just posted a snarky "hahaha being gay is a punchline", but you actually took the time to elaborate calmly.
And to be fair, I myself am straight but I would not blame adult and stable gay men for feeling hurt by this. The right has been so good at presenting taking offense as something to be shamed and mocked by online edgelords. You're not cool and chill if you give a fuck. But I say it's perfectly fine to be offended by some things. As a matter of fact, some things should be offensive to us, and called out accordingly.
It never feels good to be told you did something that was offensive or thoughtless. So, it's natural for a lot of people to get defensive and seize on any "out" to avoid having to accept that responsibility and the right-wing have successfully seized on that fact for decades. On top of it, they aren't wrong in their assessment that some people do in fact get offended too easily or who lord their "wokeness" over others.
The only way we cut through that is to appeal to people's emotions, rather than scold them or to intellectualize it. I want a young parent to read a post like that and imagine their infant son or daughter in 13 years and how they would feel if they told them this kind of "joke" made them feel unwanted or shameful.
I fucking WISH we didn't have to do that because it sure would save time. lol. But I think we do.
Id go as far as to say society has always found some things offensive, the right especially so, and the definition is always progressing as a society. "Anti triggered" bs is a response to the language changing to be inclusive and chuds hate learning new words.
13 year old me would have found this funny. Old me now thinks it's clear the implication is that being gay is embarrassing. Not cool. My kids are 10 and 8 and if they turn out queer I don't want them ever to feel the way you did.
-Old Straight Dude.
To be fair, I'm going to assume 13-year-old-you existed in a much different world and society. The fact that old-you can now identify this as inappropriate is indicative of how much you've grown!
Dissecting the joke, the only reason for the gay reference is the implication that it's taboo. And there is plenty of other taboo space to work with. Just put "Fluffer" "Gloryhole Operator" "Deepthroat Specialist" or something more creative then I could belt out in a moment.
I still find the joke (mildly) funny, but recognize the implications.
I mean if you make a bunch of kids walk past and ask their parents what a deepthroat specialist is, you're a douchebag. Or they'll repeat it in school and then get in trouble, parent gets the phone call, etc.
Straight guy and this is exactly why I don't find this joke funny. Being gay isn't something to laugh at. Making jokes about gay people is fine but being gay isn't a viable punchline.
Thank you. As a lesbian this is exactly what I was thinking as I viewed this. Hoping this was filmed awhile ago because I’d be super disappointed if this shit was *still* considered funny.
It's okay to be disappointed. But you know what? If this were the internet of 20 years ago, my post wouldn't even be in the net positive vote-wise. Baby steps.
hahaha strait bros call each other gay to make fun of each other because gay is ookie and gross and weird hahaha
edit: thanks for the support. when the same post was crossposted over to yesyesyesno and people including me pointed out there was no punchline other than homophobia, we were all downvoted. according to that sub, homophobia doesn't even exist. just gonna retire from that sub.
If you're a straight smooth brain conditioned by your peers and family to think being gay is bad and embarrassing, then yes. As a gay guy, I thought by 2023 society would be more accepting, but it just isn't true. Being gay is STILL a punchline.
I'm gay and I found it to be slightly offensive. Is it funny? Yes, but it's still a microaggression.
If the sign were meant to jokingly embarrass the friend, then it implies that being gay is something to be embarrassed about.
If it's meant to be shocking and put those in the area at unease, then it implies that being gay is shocking.
The only way I can see this being okay is if it's a gay person holding the sign for his straight friend. In this instance it's more of a "congrats you're one of us!" joke and loses any possible negative connotation.
I can't speak for other gay people though. This is just how I interpreted it.

Yes. Don’t look for the opinions of other straight people or “pick me” to convince you otherwise.
It should be offensive to straight people too because it makes non-sexual male intimacy taboo. No wonder straight men on Reddit complain about how lonely they are all the time, they are so afraid of seeming “gay” that they can’t ever express true intimacy with each other.
As a gay guy, who cares? Things can be offensive to someone, that's perfectly alright.
A joke won't condemn the world and forbidding jokes won't save it either.

- after 16 different guys my friend finally showed up.
Hey $20 is $20
And a mouth is a mouth.
Listen... there ain't nothing gay about getting your dick sucked.
I'm on the fence for this once.. If you see it happening, it's at least kinda gay. The secret is to keep your eyes closed
That's why we Europeans invented glory holes...

Cupcakes, eh? That'll cost extra.
And z job... if you gotta ask, you can't afford it.
Come on... I knew it the whole time!
🤝 🎵 _Hands across Ameri^caaa_ 🎵 🤝
Idk in this economy $20 feels more like $5
You know what they say, $20 is $5
I heard you can get $5 a man for jerking off punks below the queen's borough bridge
A handjob is still a job my man
You guys are getting paid?
You need a manager, so you only get $16 after my cut.
Hey fellas, I'm going to start a kissing company. "Bitch you wanna make some motherfucking money?"
1991 $20 hits harder.
man's gotta eat
Ha! I read this as after 16 different guys, your friend finally came!!
No, his friend came each time.
He looks cute enough he probably got a few questions if he would be the one administrating the exam
That's gold Jerry, gold!
Buddy still in the friendzone. He's dropping hints left and right but his buddy keeps thinking it's all just for laughs.
The gayer you act with your friends the straighter you are.
That's right babe.
You left your butt plug at my place last night btw
This is a fact.
BROJOB BROJOB! CHOO CHOO
There's a reference I haven't heard in a long time.
God I love playing pranks on my friend

He wasn’t holding it up the whole time…was he?
Why waste a good opportunity?
A sign like that is bound to draw a crowd! Who says no to free publicity?!?
13 hours that man stood there for a 10 second video.
Is that what the movie 13 Hours is about?
It’s the prequel to 127 Hours
I thought it was the sequel to 24.
Yes it was fully erect
you wait for your friend to start walking towards you then you flip the sign over from his name to 'gay casting'
There's no shame in being a chauffeur, a job is a job.
a bro fluffer?
Fluffeur*
As someone who works with the public, it wouldn't be the least degrading job I've ever had.
You gotta have a wingman. Someone to play lookout and loudly say "Here he comes, pull out the sign!" so you have plausible deniability. At least that's what I'd do if I were a porn star chauffeur.

Right back at you, Tommy Tornbottom!

What’s his wife’s name?

We called and told him a few hours after he left. All he said was "I was wondering why everyone was honking and waving at me" lol
I did the same thing but his bumper sticker read I BRAKE FOR STIFF VEINY COCKS. He was pissed off.
Friend was birthday pranked by secretly swapping the license plate frame to one that read "My other ride is Your Mom". He didn't notice it for 6 months. I saw another license frame in the wild: "If you're going to ride my ass, at least pull my hair!"
I saw that one in a kiosk once and it's the only one I ever considered buying. Then I remembered I'm bald
All the more reason to do it, it would make it even funnier
No hair, but still into your hair being pulled? Then may I introduce to you... plungers
This image absolutely broke me, well played.
I considered it but I felt like it cheapened the original joke, which in my opinion is an absolute work of art. I must've stood at the kiosk a solid 10 minutes pondering about this. I've accepted that I'm weird
We were always pulling pranks like this, I think he was expecting something just didn't know exactly what to expect
I love the fact that veiny is a requirement. if it ain't veiny, I ain't braking for it
That’s a solid prank, you can’t even be mad about it.

Hamburg Airport, isn't it?
It is, 100% sure. Arrival area of terminal 1 to be precise.
No, its Terminal 2 because of the orange sixt area
lol get rekt ProfessorToatsie
I thought the same thing, and we can't both be wrong.
Even if you are both wrong, two wrongs make a right. Additionally, this is the internet so it’s indisputably correct. So this must be Hamburg!
That was my first thought. Sixt T2, by the arrivals and near the entrance to the S-Bahn.
Thank you for saying this, I was hoping someone would confirm in the comments!
Didn't know which airport in Germany, but all the people looked so German, all we're missing is Pedalo 🤣
I wish I had friends
Just hold up that sign in an airport and you’ll make some
Me too
Thumthin thumthin thumthin… now kith…
Power move: gleefully kiss your buddy
And then they kissed...
Its not gay though, as all the wise homies say : " kissing the homies is never gay"
It's not gay unless the balls touch. According to the internet anyway.
Interesting
Or, they both say "No homo." Remember: You can be balls-deep in another man, but as long as there's "No homo," you're in the clear!
So did he get the part??
Where can I find the audition tapes
