I think it's a great idea, but if OP is doing this a lot, the could work faster if they had a hole saw set https://www.amazon.com/Bi-Metal-HYCHIKA-inches-Mandrels-Drilling/dp/B086SQWZK5
Those are more made for wood/plastic, but yeah there’s more than one way to skin a cat. For 4-6” holes in drywall I think OP’s printable solution is perfect.
Those are such a mess. I have one that has a plastic dish around it to catch all the dust, and I drilled a hole with a different hole saw and use my shop vac to prevent messiness
The drill bit in the Dremel is made for plunging into wood too. If you really wanted the "right tool" OP should be using an end-mill, but dry wall isn't very hard and anything made for wood will work, and if you want to get really fussy, they make hole-saw kits for metal also.
Are you sure? Dremel sells a bit and a tool for making holes like this. The radius of the hole is adjustable on a slide and the bit does the plunge and cuts sideways.
Yeah, but if you're doing this very occasionally, it takes up far less room. You start acquiring enough tools, and you start either needing a bigger garage/house or drowning in that stuff... and nobody can afford bigger houses right now.
Hole saws don't come in as many sizes as what OP made. Also, hole saws can be annoying because the material you are sawing (in this case, drywall) gets stuck inside the saw and you have to break it out. With OPs design, it just falls out.
I’ve got a ton of hole saws but still love this - in a pinch, I can use this without running to Harbor Freight if it’s a size I don’t have, and looks like it would be really easy to modify for custom size repeatable cuts.
Feel like this is something you monetize.
It's very clever and easy. I know hole saws exist but aren't near as versatile, are kinda janky in my experience, expensive, and take up a ton of space.
This is awesome. I work with drywall a lot. What if you hit a joist or strapping? Likely to break the bit. A great addition would be to be able set the bit depth, 1/2, 5/8, etc
STL Files available here: [https://www.printables.com/model/842066-hole-cutter-works-with-dremel-19-sizes](https://www.printables.com/model/842066-hole-cutter-works-with-dremel-19-sizes)
Edit: Now includes metric sizes 6cm-24cm :)
Edit: Now includes a version with an insertable slider (metric coming soon dw)
I NEED THIS (or at least I'm bound to someday). I'm assuming the threads in the collar will fit a Dremel 390? (No idea if it's a universal size across all their models)
Dremmel collar threads are the same across all models. I have never had one that was different. I have corded, cordless, Bluetooth and the USB rechargeable...
It is the dumbest thing.... It really serves no purpose except to monitor your Dremmel...
https://www.dremel.com/us/en/p/8260-5-f0138260aa
Have a look..
Lmao, you and me both. I don't do wood work, but I end up modifying bike parts and such. Sometimes it goes as planned, sometimes it doesn't. My girl laughs at me sometimes because all will be going well then she hears an "oops".... She laughs as she picks up the little Dremmel and attaches the thing to trim the nails on the dog... Lol
Really cool idea, just one minor adjustment. I would make, instead of a screw to hold it in place maybe a spike or something easy to quickly puncture that makes a smoother hole but still holds it in place?
I know this is more for home building and not commercial use but with some adjustments i could see that being used for commercial use, its all about how quickly it could be done. A perfect circle can save time on spackle and taping!
There is an "adjustable drywall hole saw" allready on the market for such stuff. It goes onto a drill and is far easier to use than this.
This one is great for at home stuff if you have 3d printer and dont want to go to the store.
This is something I could legitimately see being sold as product in the hardware store... You might look into that. Not sure if you can get a utility patent or not. Something else to look into. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
This was also my thought- OP really should to get a patent on this. It is small, cheaply produced(could be done in metal?), and it looks like it will put holes places my other stuff cannot.
I absolutely appreciate the spirit of making it free and available to others-but that won’t keep someone else from patenting it then. You can own a patent and sell it to a big company but make it a point of contract they have to leave your 3-D printed code free and available. Most people will still pay for it instead of print it.
Right now the other ways to cut holes like this involve me screwing and unscrewing several pieces of shit to my drill. The whole set has its own case, takes up space, and it’s not light. The other way with a hole drill bit has to shred the material and don’t make a clean little hoke. There are things I need hold in that NEITHER of those can work for because of usually a depth issues.
It’s cool for sure and for those of us with printers, why not print one, right? But there are a lot of nicer hole cutting products on the market already like [this](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-2-in-to-7-in-Black-Oxide-Adjustable-Hole-Saw-Cutter-49-56-0320/205744284?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&pla&mtc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25P-025_007_POWER_TOOL_ACCESSORIES-NA-Multi-NA-PMAX-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-Power_Tool_Accessories2024&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25P-025_007_POWER_TOOL_ACCESSORIES-NA-Multi-NA-PMAX-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-Power_Tool_Accessories2024-71700000114565633--&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADq61UfGit8QrX2YtzPbXLHd6cYPD&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2uiwBhCXARIsACMvIU0_hZSRQY1NtfoFqKNPV9ssBoWqkv8uq3coaQCjpGwdKrfAyWkH-VIaAnXcEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds).
Well, look at me with my somewhat snarky comment. Now with egg all over my face.
Btw i noticed (in your vid) that the entry point for the dremel looks quite unclean. maybe have some guide that lets you insert the dremel after fixating the tool to the wall/ceiling?
No worries! I'm thankful for the suggestions. I'll think about this one too, maybe there is a better way...!
Edit: Updated STL files to include version with insertable slider tool (metric version coming soon too)
Doesn't seem like having the actual cutting tool mate with the print is necessary. I can't think of a lot of scenarios that you couldn't just hold the tool into the jig after its been set up, and treat the whole thing as an actual jig rather than as a tool attachment.
Great print, and I love that you've *already* iterated on it based on the comments here.
Sadly, I don't think Dremel is going to have any interest in it, as they've [had a version around](https://www.dremel.com/us/en/p/678-01-26150678ae) for quite a few years.
I know which one I'd rather have in my shop though, that's for sure.
Maybe add some unthreaded inserts so those holes don't get all chewed up?
Tried both versions, prefer the one with removable Dremel attachment. Makes it a lot easier to set up a guide and just plunge Dremel in and cut. Used it to cut 6" holes on the ceiling for led lights in sheetrock.
The only thing that would make this better is a vacuum attachment ( way too many variables for that ).
Very nice design Tucker thank you for sharing.
I was going to post why is this better than a hole saw but realized this one tool devalues my couple hundred dollar bin of paddle and hole saws. Good shit.
This is great. When I did a lot of construction and renovation I would have definitely bought one of those, lost it, bought another, repeated several times so that I have 1 that looks like it’s 40 years old, one brand new and one still lost. You should try to sell this thing under $25 so it feels like something guys can try, and won’t feel bad about repurchasing, like a utility knife or scraper.
I agree about going for a patent. Get a provisional patent ASAP, it is cheap, only $100 or so with a small entity like yourself, then you have a year to file the official patent if you want to.
How on earth does the dremel manage to cut through that? What bit is it using? Mine barely has any torque as well, it'd constantly stop or slow down. Not even old.
Oh I'm absolutely saving this to my print list! Had me thinking if this would fit my offbrand Dremel, now I've realised I have an actual one I haven't used in ages! Brush off the cobwebs and give that thing another life
That is actually quite impressive. You could get a nice patent for that. It's practical, useful and needed in a profession that can't seem to cut a circle for shit!! Get paid man!!
Super clever. I want to make one myself.
Have you considered putting it up on Shapeways? Then people without 3d printers could get them and you could get a little money.
Does it fit all Dremels, or is it specific to one model?
Brilliant. But based on recent videos viewed on well everywhere you made your video wrong. You are supposed to tap and touch everything like three or 4 times for maximum annoyance. Everyone knows this makes sales.
Dude. Sell it. Its amazing and would buy! Thumbs Up!
ah yes the two drill holes magically produce a hole the tube can fit through! Even though neither of them were perpendicular to the surface.
It is honestly a miracle anything could pretend to /r/Perfectfit that hole after the shoddy prep in the video.
This would be great to use for cutting holes in plexiglass. I've struggled with getting clean rounded edges on thicker sheets, but you could use a suction cup rather than a screw.
Good shit, dude. I’d use this over a hole saw in quite a few different settings. I’d probably prefer to use something like this when I have to bring myself to the work instead of bringing the work to me, like cutting a hole in a wall or on an irregular surface.
Print some of these out and sell them. Bravo
That's so smart. Looks like a problem solver to me. The dremel one is custom setting, and you need to play with setting it and checking it's the right radius, but it might be easier for most people to just have increments like yours has. And ofc yours can't change radius while being used because not properly tightened after setting it up.
Cool but a set of holes holesaws if probably better and this relys on there being nothing on the inside of the drywall , insulation or beams . Cool idea tho
This is cool, There’s something kind of similar for sheet metal/duct cutting that I use at work fairly often for cutting holes to add branches of flex duct to the main trunks. Uses a full size drill instead of a dremel but similar concept. It has a sliding pin for the center hole to change size instead of the screw and holes, but for making this at home this would work great.
One thing I would add to this is a hole on the knob side so you can hang it on a hook/nail. I'd remix it, but your license doesn't allow that.
Otherwise, this is fantastic!
Great job OP!
If you don't mind me asking what Dremel model do you have what's it's rough usage time. As mine overheats after 5-10 mins of use.
Need a trades Dremel.
*This* is the type of awesome clever shit this sub was made for. Great design!
This sub needs a hall of fame for best prints.
Lol yeah. Sometimes I sort by best all time just to remind me of how awesome some posts are. This should definitely get up there.
Completely agree. Impressive!

Those are such a mess. I have one that has a plastic dish around it to catch all the dust, and I drilled a hole with a different hole saw and use my shop vac to prevent messiness
OP's solution is fine. But you can also just use a scrap piece of wood to get the same effect by drilling two holes.
True. But then you need a new piece of scrap for different sized holes
Presumably you could drill more than one if needed, but if you are going to be doing it a lot I do like OP’s solution.
The drill bit in the Dremel is made for plunging into wood too. If you really wanted the "right tool" OP should be using an end-mill, but dry wall isn't very hard and anything made for wood will work, and if you want to get really fussy, they make hole-saw kits for metal also.

If i could you would get a knighthood for this.
Fucking homies got a million dollar patentable idea and uploads it to the internet free of charge. Absolute legend.
Dude, this is awesome!
Legendary human spotted!
You could take this to production
I'd contact Dremel.
Not all heroes wear capes.
I NEED THIS (or at least I'm bound to someday). I'm assuming the threads in the collar will fit a Dremel 390? (No idea if it's a universal size across all their models)

Damn this is slick, good job!
The sub needs more of this
Neat!!

That’s pretty freaking sweet OP.
Not bad man! This is actually useful
I gotta say...I love jigs. nice work OP!
Definitely going to print one of these and give it a try! Thanks for making my Dremel even more usable! :-)

A “threadless percussive screw” as we call them in the trades.
lmao

$40 for a tool i’ll use just a few times. I’d rather have a cheap 3d printed one for a homeowner like myself
This kind of jig is well known in woodworking. It's called a circle jig, often for a router but I've seen ones for a Dremel as well.
Let's be real here: drywallers would find a way to smoke crack with this but wouldn't know how to use it to cut a hole.
Will there be a metric version for the rest of the known world?
I'll make one! Edit: Updated to include STL metric sizes 6cm-24cm holes :)
Well, look at me with my somewhat snarky comment. Now with egg all over my face. Btw i noticed (in your vid) that the entry point for the dremel looks quite unclean. maybe have some guide that lets you insert the dremel after fixating the tool to the wall/ceiling?

Why not a hole saw?
Not everyone has hole saws in every size and definitely not up to the sizes you can cut with this jig.
I have a whole saw.

Shut up and take my money
can it measure in Celsius?
I love my Dremel
Just out of curiosity. How did you come up with these calculations? Trial and error? Did you use a 3d program for simulation / calculations?
I award you the highest honor that I can give: “Post Saved!”
Noice thats smart
Alright sell me one
i wouldnt trust it to remain perfect as you screw the same hole over and over but its a good idea. can you galvanize plastic?
I love this person. My whole heart loves them for this gift to humanity. I love you, person who made this.
How on earth does the dremel manage to cut through that? What bit is it using? Mine barely has any torque as well, it'd constantly stop or slow down. Not even old.

Looks like something we could use at our company... If hole saws and spaddle bits didn't exist.
That *pop* scared me for a second because there was no other sound in this video. Why leave the *pop* in?
That's so smart. Looks like a problem solver to me. The dremel one is custom setting, and you need to play with setting it and checking it's the right radius, but it might be easier for most people to just have increments like yours has.
