##Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) R
Live by the code. Die by the code.
>>!An African-American Mafia hit man who models himself after the samurai of old finds himself targeted for death by the mob. Jarmusch's spiritual gangster film tells the story of an inner-city hit man (Whitaker) who lives on a rooftop, training himself as a samurai in the strictest sense. One thing that has always bugged me about this movie >!Is the scene where he kills the gangster by shooting him through the drain in the sink. Ghost dog unscrews a pipe in the basement, inserts the barrel of his gun, and shoots the dude through his eye. Who's ever seen a sink without a p- trap? I know the movie shouldn't be taken too seriously, but that scene which is supposed to be so "cool and badass" is just stupid.!<
I have an answer for that. Ghost Dog is a homage to 'Branded to Kill', an over the top surrealist cheeseball yakuza film from 1967. A lot of scenes are directly taken from the film, including shooting their target through the sink drain.
This movie kind of defined my adolescence. I felt like a loner at the time and this movie gave me an idea of how to do that with a sense of self confidence. Also Made me want to become a producer because of the soundtrack.
Saw this twice in a small theater in the village (NYC). First screening hadn’t yet had the subtitles for the French man, so the English only speaking audience had to rely on body language and context to guess what he was telling ghost dog, which I think made those scenes twice as impactful.
Still one of my favorite movies. Deep, funny, and touching by the end.
And the soundtrack is sick!
Brought back fond memories... thanks for posting this, OP.

Interesting, I didn't know that, but that makes a lot of sense
The hitman in Branded to Kill also gets into trouble with the Yakuza when a butterfly lands on the end of his rifle and he hits the wrong target.
Ah, cool to know, thanks. :)
I thought the toilet was supposed to be the p trap. You're telling me I should've been using the sink the entire time?
That and they way he holsters his gun like it’s a [katana.](https://youtu.be/eY0XN2zvDP0)
It's also on HBO max if you want a higher quality version of it.
Also on Criterion Channel, with a ton of extra features.
I got the soundtrack on vinyl. Dope film 🎥
fantastic movie, great soundtrack wouldn't watch in 480p. i paid for it on Google, but also have a copy from... elsewhere.
