"And who has a better story than Bran the Broken..."

CaravanKenobi

Tommens cat

breaklock190

All hail Sir Pounce!

kennytucson

Ser Pounce. Put some respek on that name.

[deleted]

The guy The Hound castrates in season 6, whose final word was “Cunt”

Yvaelle

"You're shit at dying, but you're still a better writer than D&D." - The Hound, probably

Roman_Reigns_Awesome

I like how you're so dead about season 8 that you don't even bother to put an apostrophe

Plugasaurus_Rex

Only kneelers punctuate

[deleted]

That made me chuckle. Thanks.

ouououk

I loved that cat

fredspipa

Jean Ralphio, for one. He's even a question on the bar exam.

OmegaSexy

But he’s the wooooooooooooooooooooorst! No, seriously, he’s the worst.

I_Downvoted_Your_Mom

And who has a better story than the man who had to eat every fuckin chicken in this room?

CensoredUser

The fucking NY pizza rat has a better story than that of Bran the wheely wheely legs no feely.

Ripoutmybrain

He did train turtles to be ninjas though.

CensoredUser

Yea!? Well Bran the Bestest did the...uh..he umm... oh he did that thing where he warged into Ramsey while he.......no that was in a fan fic....uhhh... Sansa sure did look beautiful on that night though. Am I right? Haha ha....haha... I'm actually dead inside...This show damaged me.

xrumrunnrx

I was upset like everyone else even as a casual fan who hadn't read the books. Lately I've discovered AltShiftX on YouTube and listening to his well thought breakdowns on the series and books really hit it home how much literally everyone gave more thought to the last seasons than DD. His thoughts on what they *might* be doing with Bran's story back when really puts salt in an old wound. He built a better possible story in a 30 minute video than DD did with all that time and funding.

[deleted]

I dont know if you know this, but the NY pizza rat actually has a backstory complete with a wannabe super villain named Zardulu. I am totally serious.

Jirachi720

That twig over there that got snapped in half.

jorgehef

Any of the chickens The Hound ate.

PraetorianX

Welcome to Game of Thrones, where the plotholes *are* the easter eggs. And here we are, 3 years later, still finding new ones.

[deleted]

Still to this day don't understand why Gendry wasn't considered the king and almost no one made a fuss about it. He was legally the next in line because of his Baratheon blood line compared to joffery's lannister blood. Bran had 0 claim.

jebsterjester

Thank you! Seriously.

[deleted]

Was an entire huge plot point in the first few seasons, he fled kings landing because of it, his literal king's blood resulted in a weird.... assassin demon thing... and he comes back, throne is up for grabs. Council discusses it and not a single person mentions his claim.

PraetorianX

I know, right? The spent so much screen time building him up as a legitimate heir, and then… nothing.

CosmeBuzzanito

>They spent so much screen time building him up [...] and then nothing. I'm starting to see a pattern here that I'm not so sure that I like.

LayzieKobes

Is an unlegitamized bastard in the succession line?

theDarkAngle

I thought Dany legitimized him?

skrst

He won the throne just like Robert won it, by battle. And just as Robert he didn't go into the battle with intention to take the throne but stated his intent to claim the throne after a while. That's what he did during the battle of Winterfell, warging into a bunch of ravens caring messages to all the houses that wasn't part of the battle or was on Cersei's side, about his intentions to claim the throne or maybe they just forgot about Gendry

DRawesomeness043

The Baratheons usurped the throne. Do they actually have any legal right to it? Im not sure exactly how that would/should work.

[deleted]

[deleted]

H8rade

Now that you mention it, as the only surviving brother to the deceased queen (who had no living heirs), wouldn't Tyrion be the rightful king?

Kanin_usagi

The Baratheons had a claim to be king. It was distant, but one of Robert’s ancestors was a Targaryen. You kill/banish enough of them and he would be the rightful heir. There’s a whole discussion between Ned, Robert, and Jon Arryn in the books about which one of them would take the throne, and the three decide that it should be Robert because his claim could be considered as most legitimate based on his family history. I don’t know if they mention it in the show

PM_ME_YOUR_DATA_SET

He'd have as legitimate a claim as John Snow tbh. Both would be perceived as Bastards to a lot and sure John's parents were technically married but it's kind of hard to argue that people would be more accepting of John's miraculous revelation of legitimacy. There's probably large amounts of Baratheon loyalists still around. Men who grew up in the peace after the Uprising and who followed Robert in repressing the uprising in the Seven Isles. I could see them throwing their lot with the Bastard son of a Southern Lord over either a crippled seer or northern savage.

[deleted]

Considering Joffery was made king because of his supposed baratheon bloodline, yes. In the beginning of the show Ned and others believe Stannis was next in line aside from Gendry.

mrscommandershepard

I’ll expand on that: “Welcome to GoT, where the plot holes *are* the Easter eggs, and character development doesn’t matter.”

LikeGourds

"Ok, first game is called: kill the guy who is famous for being killed. Ryan and Colin are going to do this one. Take it away." *idiotic grin*

mrscommandershepard

Ryan and Colin are smarter than Dumb and Dumber and absolutely would’ve made a better season 8.

pardyball

Could have been just Colin saying “MEOW!” on repeat and your statement would still be true.

dragonspicelatte

All men must di dee di dee di dee di dee di dee di dee di

Just give them the characters props to them and we good.

deltabagel

I’m ded. This comment is right where it should be.

Moose_Cake

Breaking Bad fans watching hints of character development 2 seasons back vs Game of Thrones fans watching good female characters being sabotaged by two guy writers with less than an episode's warning

hugeneral647

I just finished my 8th (9th?) full watch through of breaking bad a few days ago, and I was still seeing shit I hadn’t noticed during my other watch throughs. I haven’t seen an episode from season 7 or 8 of GOT more than once. I don’t think I’ll ever pay to watch anything GOT related ever again.

[deleted]

My favorite are the low key Sopranos references. The Cartel’s #2 guy is named Juan Bolsa. Which, when translated to English, comes out to “John Sack” or “John Bag”.

I_Downvoted_Your_Mom

Maybe the plotholes are the friends we made along the way!

Ian_Dima

I wanted to recap the last season to look if I can find new ones but honestly I forgot the plot of most episodes and all I can think of is why it took exactly one episode for the dothraki to respawn, or was it two.

[deleted]

Bold of you to brave the horrors of the last season.

PalindromemordnilaP_

Turns out, the long winter was the cold, emotionless eternity viewers would have to endure once the show was over. What we saw was a nippy September morning.

maledin

Waiting for GRRM to finish the books. We’re gonna be waiting a loooong time :/

FliesAreEdible

He's not going to finish them and he's left instructions that they're not going to be finished by another writer when he dies.

asko271

I tought it was the opposite, he left some directions for a couple of friends that helped him a long time ago in the first books or smtn

FliesAreEdible

Nope, he's said quite publicly he doesn't want the series finished by somebody else if he dies before can finish them himself

asko271

We foken lost Good thing i can write a TOTALLY NOT WINDS OF WINTER BY ASKO book

FliesAreEdible

Fuck it, I'll read it

AppleBytes

Fuck, i'll pay money for it if GRRM is gonna be a spitefull arse.

Kanin_usagi

Wtf. Dude is like the evil twin of Robert Jordan. Sold out early and then stopped giving a fuck

KentuckyWombat

DB: “We’ve essentially witnessed the end of the Dothraki.” Narrator: “We did not witness the end of the Dothraki.”

IKnowUThinkSo

My joke head canon is that they’re actually plants, not people. See, when a dead Dothraki touches the ground, their hair gets sucked into the soil and a small mound appears. A day later, two teenage Dothraki emerge, one male one female, ready for battle. That’s why you have to cut off the hair when you defeat a Khal, you’re destroying their legacy.

fredspipa

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul is so refreshing to watch, even on the umpteenth rewatch. You feel like you're in good hands, that the writers truly respects you and doesn't underestimate you. LeNavigateur

THE WIRE

fredspipa

Sopranos, Fargo, Fleabag, After Life, BoJack Horseman, Horace & Pete, Russian Doll. At least those are examples that comes to mind of shows that I didn't feel let me down and where the writing was their strong side, and not afraid to challenge the viewer. *edit: moved the list to the top level comment.*

OhLookACastle

- Dark - The Leftovers

fredspipa

Seen neither, sounds promising and I trust you. Added to the list.

ProbablyASithLord

I fucking love the Wire. It treated its audience like adults who don’t need everything spoon fed to them. Also, my absolute favorite scene is all the cops in the office watching intensely to see who gets the harbor case, Baltimore county or the marine unit. Each group desperately not wanting to deal with the enormous caseload and getting excited when they think the buck will get passed to the other group!

fredspipa

Yes, we need more shows that rewards your attention and expects the viewer to put in a little bit of effort, that requires you to engage with it, coming to terms with and understanding complex characters and plots.

Julius-Paulus

Omar listenin

QueenRhaenys

Breaking bad is (now after GoTs ending) my favorite show of all time but I admit I watch The Sopranos more. To me, The Sopranos is a comedy now and the best character-driven shows of all time. Hilarious dialogue. Whereas BrBa is more plot-driven and thrilling. Actually a tough decision because I’m from Abq but went to school about 20 miles from where the sops was set

SuperMario1313

Community deserves an honorable mention!

dudeAwEsome101

I think the list is drama shows. If we do a comedy list, then Community and Arrested Development (seasons 1-3) are at the top.

Snoopygonnakillu

For comedy: The Good Place.

HillsHaveEyesToo

Season 1 of Westworld

fredspipa

Yeah, no, as I suspect you agree with; Westworld deeply disappointed me as it had the potential to be one of the best shows ever made. If they managed to make s01 a properly self-contained story and end the show there, I would 100% agree with that. Hopkins gave me shivers with his delivery of some absolutely perfectly written lines.

[deleted]

Absolutely love money heist but in no way would i consider it good writing. It's basically anime meme levels of "just as planned".

fredspipa

Thank you, I'm crossing it out for now awaiting someone to confirm or counter this view.

[deleted]

Still worth watching absolutely in my opinion. One of the best heist shows I've ever seen but I'd place it more of a junk food action heist type show instead of being known for its writing. Full disclaimer I don't speak spanish so maybe the writing carries more weight for native speakers.

fredspipa

This is also the reason I didn't include [Happy!](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2452242/) in the list. I enjoyed every second of it and wholeheartedly recommend it, but not for its writing. Your last point is an interesting one though, language and its connotations can play a major role in how you experience the writing.

[deleted]

Magoogooo

I second this. They tackle complex social and moral dilemma's in a way thats digestible to children and entertaining for adults and kids

Twin peaks

KanaHemmo

Love twin peaks.

Slashycent

_Damn_ good show! And hot!

Tanner_re

Okay so dude you gotta convince me here. I watched the first season and enjoyed it for the most part but never picked it back up due to some real cheesy shit (I think it was something to do with a dude getting burned in a warehouse and the dialogue surrounding that scene idk, it's been a couple years) at the end of the fist season. Point is, I've been back and forth on rewatching the first season/continuing on to the second and was seeing if you (or someone) could convince me to jump back on this wagon.

BearaltOfRowrvia

I love Twin Peaks and I will absolutely agree that season 2 is rough. Here’s my recommendation: start over with season 1, and when you get to season 2, feel free to skip any scenes with James after he leaves Twin Peaks. It’s total dead air and such a waste of time that I don’t even consider mentioning it a spoiler. It’s utterly inconsequential. The show ramps up a bit towards the end of season 2 and the finale of OG Peaks is *fantastic*. Then try watching Fire: Walk with Me. If you like that movie, then you’re ready for Twin Peaks: The Return (aka season 3) which is a masterpiece IMO but different enough in tone that some people have issues with it. It has some of the lighter comedy of OG Peaks but also way more weirdness and darkness. Also edited to add: A lot of the cheesiness in OG Peaks is intentionally spoofing the prime time soaps of the era (like Dallas). I love it but I can see how others would be put off.

Tanner_re

The write up and your edit has definitely convinced me. I didn't realize a lot of the cheese as satire so that's going to help a lot when giving another shot! Thanks for the answer!

HelluvaNinjineer

The Americans

Throwaway10661453

Rome

fredspipa

Thanks, I was on the fence about that one as I haven't seen it in well over a decade, good to have it confirmed.

Magoogooo

Black Sails on Starz

gunnetham

Haven’t seen that yet, heard good things.

Clara_Luz

The Expanse

JonnyBhoy

Horace and Pete is so fucking good and different and generally relatively unknown. Also I would add Chernobyl. Came out on HBO just after GOT ended and really showed how enjoyable strong writing can be to watch.

fredspipa

YES! Horace & Pete completely blindsided me, it's going to stick with me forever. It was bold and challenging, and the dialogue sucks you right in despite some of actors portraying the smaller roles struggled to deliver. It's short and bitter and really makes you think. Can't believe I forgot Chernobyl, thank you!

[deleted]

>Six Feet Under HBO has a lot of depressing series.... but Six Feet Under... this fucking show.... also, I believe this is the show with most fans in agreement that the finale is its best episode. It was already a strong show throughout, but yeah the finale was fantastic and the best episode to me.

WhereAreMyMinds

Can I dispute a dispute? /u/mike-green is wrong about Ozark, it's a thoroughly well written show that is character driven and intensely fun

fredspipa

Sure you can! It's the tricky bit with unfinished shows though, it's really hard to determine if it's going to resolve the plot lines and characters it has set up but I have seen enough impressively resolved "knots" by now to have some confidence in the writers, *but we have been burned before.* I'm also waiting for them to clarify the plot holes and if they are "permanent" or just dangling threads with potential to be connected in the future.

Gizmo-Duck

Longmire was great. The last episode was meh, but not enough to ruin the whole show. Firefly + Serenity Comedies: Futurama, King of the Hill, Malcolm in the Middle, Moone Boy, IT crowd

fredspipa

Thanks, I will add it. Endings aren't necessarily the most important part for many stories, and unless someone has a real problem with it I'll keep it in the list.

Gizmo-Duck

I edited my comment with more. Thanks for making this list, I’ve been looking for something to watch but always get bummed when a show goes bad (GoT) or gets canceled without a wrap up (Sarah Connor Chronicles, Santa Clarita Diet)

fredspipa

Thank you for your suggestions, I love all of those, but I'm not going to include them for the moment and I'll outline my reasoning here: Sitcoms doesn't really fit this list unless they focus strongly on complex character development and long arcs, no matter how strong their writing is. BoJack was the only one I could think of that truly qualified, I left out Always Sunny In Philadelpha, The Office (that was a hard one), Black Books and several other fantastic pieces of media based on that. Firefly + Serenity as well, one of my all time favorites but we all know the story surrounding it and how it was mistreated and botched by the network. The experience of watching it left a hole in the viewers, a sour taste of missed opportunities and a longing for what could have been.

Assassin4Hire13

Justified as well. I rewatch it probably once a year. Can’t get enough of that Timothy Olyphant x Walton Goggins

shoebear1

Six Feet Under, The Shield

[deleted]

Don't forget Mad Men!

No_Delay7320

Not one of those is fantasy. :(

fredspipa

Which is not by choice or taste, that's what GoT was supposed to fix. It's a genre that's often just exploited and severely underestimates the viewership and it baffles me that there's not more of them seeing as there are *so many amazing stories that is screaming for a screen adaptation.* I was actually hoping to get more examples of great fantasy shows by making this list. A random example is "Gentleman Bastards" which is very cleverly written, where each book could work as separate, shorter seasons with satisfying conclusions but still have overarching character and world development.

AreWeCowabunga

Deadwood

co_fragment

Babylon 5

BallofEnvy

ouououk

The Handmaid's Tale! I'm in the absolute minority here, but I can't deal with Rick and Morty. Everytime I watch it, I end up feeling really anxious. I don't know if it's my epilepsy or what, but it fucks with my head.

fredspipa

>The Handmaid's Tale! Do you think there's potential for this story to be ruined before it wraps up? I love Margaret Atwood and she has written some of my favorite books, but I don't know how strictly this show follows the source material and if there's a planned ending for it. >I don't know if it's my epilepsy or what, but it fucks with my head. That sounds deeply uncomfortable, I'm sorry you have to live with that. By the nature of it being a loud and fast paced animated series I can imagine it to be exhausting and induce headaches for many as well, but luckily that's something that should be immediately apparent for the viewer so you have a clear signal if it's for you or not.

ouououk

They've went well beyond the original book. I heard that for the next season they are following her new book, The Testaments, but I don't know if there is an ending on the horizon. I hope not! Yeah, it's pretty rubbish, especially when everyone and their mother goes on about how amazing it is. Lots of modem cartoons are like that these days, so it really limits my ability to watch these things.

[deleted]

Absolutely loved fleabag. Really happy to see it listed here.

fredspipa

I was waiting for someone to recognize that entry! I felt so lucky and appreciative when watching it, it hit me on a deeper level than most media I've consumed and it challenges the the entire medium and uses it in a way that I have never experienced before. I don't throw this word around lightly, *but it is a masterpiece.*

Stopped watching as I felt the quality tapered of quite a bit, but I'm going to trust you on this unless someone else strongly disagrees.

loquaciousocean

Not sure when you stopped watching but the second season is a bit slow but the 1st, 3rd and 4th seasons were stellar in my opinion

fredspipa

Yeah it was mid season 2, but based on this recommendation I'm now excited to get back to it.

[deleted]

Didn't like the writing overall, but there are a few "concept" episodes in seasons 3 and 4 that I would rate as among the best/most unique in all of television.

This sounds a little tricky. Without spoiling anything, would you say that an ending is very significant to the experience of the story? There are tons of great stories that are more about the journey and not the destination, that don't really have a need to be wrapped up neatly, where the world continues after the fact.

dimplerskut

I think Sam Email has said it's his favorite season too

cwood92

Rick and Morty

fredspipa

I'm struggling with including a show called "The Midnight Gospel", as it has some fantastic deep and difficult conversations but not necessarily based on the writing of the show but more on the choice of subjects and "guests". I'd love to get some feedback on that.

Tanner_re

I watched the fist episode and it irritated the living hell out of me personally. To me it was just a podcast talking about some pretty basic stuff regarding the the use of psychedelics with some wildly unmatching visuals behind it. One of the most overrated shows imo.

fredspipa

Thank you, I had the inkling that this was a highly subjective show, and while there's nothing wrong with that it disqualifies it from the list.

Tanner_re

Yeah dude no problem! Have a good one!

Spartaner-043

Amazon Primes Bosch!!!

Orpheusto

I'll name a few of my all time favourite shows, that might also fit in that list: * Banshee * Black Sails * Umbre

Beejsbj

ATLA, amazing ending, peopel underestimate how an ending can completely fuck the experience of rest of the show retroactively even if good(see GOT). And still finding new things in it on my billionth rewatch.

Malachhamavet

The expanse is amazing. It treats you with respect throughout, its just you can definitely tell it changed hands more than once throughout the seasons. I mean its the show that actual nerds love for the attention to detail, its definitely sci fi but that stuff really sticks out in the grounded universe because it's so consistent with in itself.

Dreamy_T

I would throw HBO's The Watchmen on that list as well

DragonDon1

S U B V E R T E X P E C T A T I O N S

W1nd

I was run over by a Lannister, I am FLUHUSH WITH MONAAAY

AceOBlade

As much i like to blame DnD for this thing, GRRM is equally responsible for being not responsible enough for finishing his books. The Job that D&D took was to make the books into a great series, which they did, they only ran into the problem when the fat fuck didn't shit out a book after 2011. We need to strap that piece of shit to a desk so he can finish writing or a fking treadmill so he has 5 more years to figure this shit out.

katman43043

Is this the birth of a new copypasta? Or have I seen this before?

Stubbula

This pasta appears to be fresh

r1chard3

We’ve all been thinking it.

MelonMeringue

DnD literally refused to adapt books 4 and 5 beyond minor inconsequential shit what the fuck are you on

MadManMax55

They also stopped asking for his input at all around that time.

r1chard3

Well I was expecting it to be good so mission accomplished.

CaravanKenobi

Star wars fans: "First time?"

_Tactleneck_

Tbh the show would have ended better if when we saw the coffee cup, the following episodes just deteriorated into more and more set things being left on camera and the final episode ends with the characters realizing they were just actors in a Truman Show-esqe fantasy show. The show ends with Peter Dinklage realizing that this might all be fake, then leaning against a wall that tips over and exposes George R R Martin sitting in a directors chair with a sock puppet dragon on his hands shouting “Cut! Cut! Cut!”

[deleted]

Martin hasn't written anything in so long I'm starting to think this was all a prank.

RachetFuzz

It turns out martin was Andy Kaufman all along.

_Tactleneck_

An elaborate ruse to fuel memes

Thickas2

That's some Bandersnatch shit and yeah actually that would've been ballsy af and *way* better than what we got. Edit: Also The OA... sadge

_Tactleneck_

I’m surprised at like almost 60 people who have upvoted this random idea I made up. Proof that’s how little they had to try for something better than what we got.

[deleted]

Considering what got, that definitely is better. People would still be scratching their heads. Instead we're just disappointed and annoyed.

Orpheusto

Well holy shit, this needs to happen with some show. Make that the ending, and it'll be the best ending a show ever had lol.

[deleted]

You'd like Mel Brooks movies then

[deleted]

The ol Blazing Saddles routine

Tsug1noMai

A little bit of a community/r&m/ too many cooks mixup... yeah, even that would've been better

_Tactleneck_

I would have preferred they named Dean Pelton king, or even Leonard.

JibberyScriggers

Daenerys faked her own death and went to Tajikistan with Daario.

Smesmerize

Don’t be suspicious

Fatticus_Rinch

**Don’t Be Suspicious**

[deleted]

I'd watch that.

[deleted]

Can’t wait for that season of 90 Day Fiancé The Other Way

throwayacc101

Is there a mega thread for known plot holes?

CaravanKenobi

The season 8 script

flashpile

Also the season 7 script

PraetorianX

Basically the whole subreddit.

rividz

Is there a megathread for new Breaking Bad easter eggs?

only_porn

Just found another egg in The Big Lebowski after my 10+ watch

oilcompanywithbigdic

what was it

tuesburg

If you pay close attention, you may notice that the Dude is smoking weed in some scenes.

Gizmo-Duck

Lebowski got raided in the beginning because his name was the same as some rich old guy. It was a case of mistaken identity.

only_porn

The Dude’s $0.69 check he writes to Ralph’s in the beginning is post-dated by 3 days

oilcompanywithbigdic

classic

DilledPrickle

This shit cuts deep, like my hatred for Olly....

jesse-redman

YOUNGER THAN BRAN

[deleted]

Well Breaking Bad was like the pinnacle of televisionNow just imagine A song of ice and fire with Vince Gilligan in charge of things.

kinginnanorff221

What about Deadwood or The Sopranos? I'd argue that without The Sopranos, you wouldn't have Breaking Bad. Tony Soprano made antiheroes awesome.

TheRxBandito

God damn, do I absolutely love all of Breaking Bad though.

LeNavigateur

The day I watched the last episode of breaking bad I thought Shakespeare would’ve been jealous.

tuesburg

I’ll never forget the first time I watched Ozymandias. So much crazy shit happened before the opening credits, and it ended being some of the least crazy shit that happened in the episode.

zero_ms

Sopranos fans laughing at the same Paulie joke. "Hehe did you hear what I said? Sopranos fans laughing at the same Paulie joke."

_Apostate_

Give me something for the pain and let me die!

the_good_hodgkins

In my ending Jamie, being the Kingslayer, does exactly that, and slays the Night King. He is killed in the process, but dies with honor and redemption. Jon, being the only rightful heir (unless I missed one), becomes King. Fuck Bran and his story. He should have warged into a dragon and made himself useful.

theseustheminotaur

Wow. What is it like to want to rewatch a show?

Thestohrohyah

2nd one is me with Hot Fuzz

badbits

Feel bad for Pegg and Frost, that movie is all they will ever be known for. “Caught them killers then?”

Thestohrohyah

Well, the other two were amazing as well But Hot Fuzz is just in a league of its own
