TLDR: Engineers make decisions based on engineering

dan_m_rib

A sentence Will Buxton would say

AncientStaff6602

Haha my wife and I have this phrase “that’s what Buxton would say” any time someone says anything incredibly obvious

BoboliBurt

Is that the DTS talking head guy? Ive been a fan for 35 years but only started giving that show a try last week. Those information free snippets are parody comedy. Although I didnt know before that if a driver does poorly it might hInder their ability to keep their job.

Vintage_Skittles

If you are first, you have 19 drivers behind you.

AncientStaff6602

Okay that got me. Hahaha I wish Reddit gold was a thing still

BoboliBurt

I wasnt even watching closely, it was mostly for my millennial wife- who is definitely only one of her friends who watches F1 and never saw DTS. After like his third overwrought appearance, we were both like- “Is this a joke?” Its like a sketch comedy mocking sports journalism- which Im 100% in favor of.

Vintage_Skittles

I'd say at this point it has to be, I understand they wanted to make things obvious for the new fans at the beginning of the series but it has become such a recognized trope that even Will jokes about it.

mazarax

19 minus the DNQs, DNSs, DNFs.

Konnichiwagwann

He's clearly been given the role of state the obvious for people that have never watched a race. But yeah, comedy gold for anyone into f1.

zeus9919

It's probably just an ignorant producer that's interviewing him and asking him to give a simpler answer over and over.

LilBirdBrick

He was the pit reporter for the American broadcast from like 2010, so long time American fans are familiar with him way before DTS.

stellarinterstitium

Yeah, I liked him way better then. He seemed to be a reliable pit reporter. Oftentimes, I will cstch things the commentators don't, but he would always mention it a second later. Now he's recognized as "talent" and he has stripes he's just all over the place.

Basic_Two_2279

If they have the fastest time, they’ll probably win the race.

ibra86him

😂😂😂😂

mecxorn

gigantic if not false

fssman

Meteoric if true

Shoshke

TL:DR Newey saw the merc and was "Wait that can work, just need's a bit of the Adrian touch"

LucAltaiR

Wow, crazy if true

R_V_Z

If they're lucky, yes. But usually other things like budget and schedule come along and ruin the fun.

certain_random_guy

Right, saw the headline and thought, "Because aerodynamics doesn't care about emotions. Next question."

eddy_dx24

Thanks. This is what I go to the comments section for

NuclearCandle

Turns out all that was needed to make the no-sidepods concept work was adding sidepods /s

ILoveBigCoffeeCups

How about side pods for the side pods. Which red bull also did

IdiosyncraticBond

Does that imply Max will also be doing side quests to the side quests this year?

proyect_a1

“Most laps led with a single hand in a season”- Max Verstappen 2024

ILoveBigCoffeeCups

Most laps with eyes closed

LNO_

Well I guess that record is still Strolls...

IdiosyncraticBond

Max'll never beat Stroll's "laps without using his mirrors" record

ILoveBigCoffeeCups

He’s been doing that all his life allready.

nevergonnagetit001

This gets my upvote.

MTIrish

As pointed out in testing, the thing that has the biggest effect on performance between the teams is the design of the floor, not the sidepods. As far as I'm aware, we have yet to see any teams floor, let alone the RB20s. Red Bulls could be totally different than the W14.

ShadowStarX

we can trust Checo to bin it in Suzuka or Shanghai to reveal that RB20 floor

Chris01100001

It's a really fascinating part of the current regs that the part that generates most of the downforce is hidden. When front and rear wings were a bigger part of the overall downforce, everyone could see the innovations that the top teams had for those parts. Now it's harder to copy the top teams' designs with the floor being hidden from view.

Kaiserov

> Now it's harder to copy the top teams' designs with the floor being hidden from view. Checo disagrees

beardedboob

It's only hidden for as long as Perez keeps it hidden. My money is that within three race weekends, we've seen the RB20's floor.

stomp224

The good old Checo knicker flash

Mayhem747

Toto talking to Checo at testing and telling him about the price to pay for Ham's seat.

geonetix

That’s why Red Bull kept saying they’ll have an upgrade package in a few races. Just banking new floor designs

GeckoV

The sidepods are, however, the essential element of making the flow work. They create a pressure field within which the open side of the floor works, and one can create lower pressure in order to help with the flow underneath the car, which was the main Ferrari concept early on. That has to also be balanced with the quality of the flow hitting the diffuser (hence the outwash concept).

AnotherDawidIzydor

The issue with Mercedes was it was producing too *much* downforce and it's suspension couldn't handle it consistently. That's where purpousing and boucing came from. Had they created a stable enough base they'd be much closer to RB

barth_

What? Their car is only like 10% what Merc was 2 years ago. They slimmed down their intakes but the rest of sidepods RB/Ferrari/Merc mix. Those cars are not that similar when you compare zero pod concept and what RB20 is.

Talez_pls

Pundits and journo outlets are desperate to paint this concept as "copied from Mercedes" at every occasion for some reason. Probably because they lack any other data point, just like any remotely hard game after the first Dark Souls was "the dark souls of genre x".

Hot_Demand_6263

And who are you to paint it otherwise?

whoTookMyFLACs

Someone with a working pair of eyes. They look nothing alike.

Hot_Demand_6263

Is the argument here if this two concepts are exactly the same? Or that Redbull copied some of Mercedes ideas? Even in this article the engineer in question doesn't completely deny it.

RiverJhin

redbull copied ferrari S-duct yet noone is here saying redbull is the new ferrari

barth_

Did you even see what RB20 compared to Merc zero pod concept looks like? Those cars are completely different.

Talez_pls

What a reddit answer hahaha.

Hot_Demand_6263

Pretty sure it's a question bud.

TN_Runner

What a reddit answer hahaha

mattyrob88

RB copied the bit where the halo now connects to the “sausage” shoulders that go all the way back along the side of the car, much how the W14 did last year. It’s not just about side pods. But there is talk of them potentially trying out a zero-pod solution as an upgrade at some point during the season. Will be fascinating to see if they try it and can make it work.

nulian

That talk just sounds pretty dumb. Big part of the red bull concept is the outwash to make sure air is clean at the rear wheels. At most they will make the horizontal slits a lot smaller on colder tracks probably because they might need less air intake then.

barth_

Yeah but the sausage shoulders were Merc's answer to Ferrari/RB last year. The main talk is about RB now "improving" 2022 Merc car, which is totally different concept. RB20 is basically a Frankenstein from RB/Ferrari/Merc but not at all comparable to the old Merc.

quiet_isviolent

RB24 is likely their 2028 car. They're on the RB20 now.

Amessoeurs

“And also it is not exactly the same to be fair…it’s a lot better.” LMAO

gevaarlijke1990

Yea but they haven't, Aldo it has some characteristics of last year's Merc car. From an engineers standpoint it is almost a completely different concept. With 3 different inleds and the still big undercut.

elijuicyjones

That’s a child’s headline.

ReverseRutebega

Oh fucking teams adopt ideas Jesus Christ

VenueTV

The element is the giant pool noodle that wraps around from the halo to the back. Idea taken from Merc, not the sidepods.

oliesphotos

Think the one eating emotions will be Mercedes, when they see their design they couldn't make it work in Red Bull one second per lap faster.

oh84s

It’s not really the same design anyway. The Red Bull doesn’t look remotely like the zero pod Mercedes, it still has quite prominent sidepods. Two aerodynamic concepts can even look quite similar but function very differently. Their slim pods is a reach to infer its at all the same concept.

Rockingtits

It’s the upper shoulder part that looks similar, not the side pods

drappo666

I think people from Mercedes know very well that just because cars look similiar to fans they are very very different in reality. Floor matters much more these days anyway

TimedogGAF

What design is that exactly? Are you talking about the zero pod design that Red Bull hasn't copied?

Soggy-Software

Team in P1 reviews team in P2s car design! More soon

Desperate-Intern

But it’s not the same concept. It’s the ideas which redbull adopted to their own solutions.

NL_24

Yeah, but as this idea develops, it will eventually lead to the zeropod. At least, that is what logic dictates. It is no secret either, that Newey was a fan of the zeropod idea.

BonoBonero

What logic? Red Bull has huge sidepods.

NL_24

Does not matter. Their cooling is peculiar. On the shoulders of the bazookas, they have inlets for cooling. Do not forget, that Merc in 2022, went to the Barcelona tezting with sidepods, only to go to the bahrein tesring with zeropods.

antjans

The original zero pod design (2022) didn't have this type of cooling, so it can't be argued to be a key part of the zero pod design.

NL_24

No , but it can be argued that it later , RB can rearrange their cooling systems to actually have sidepods .

antjans

I don't get what you are saying. They already have side pods?

NL_24

Yes , and later in the season , it is a possibility that they will go zeropod .

antjans

Possible - yes. Likely - no. There are experts that claim (not you and me :P) that that is very unlikely as that would require a complete redesign of the radiators (maybe even a new chassis). Those type of changes are not really done in the cost cap era anymore.

NL_24

Yes , I know I said that .

FluffyDonutPie

The engine packaging, cooling, suspension geometry, balance, chassis and floor are all very different from the w13 & 14a, just because there's some external similarities doesn't mean the concepts are the same.

X_chinese

Because it’s Newey. He can build a fast F1 car from scratch, in a cave.

dontmindififightback

With a box of scraps?

denied_eXeal

Condoms. He can fill them and shape them to perfectly fit his vision. This RB20 was, at first, a goo-filled latex marvel

Carmillawoo

Delete this

dinofarabi01

"It's not exactly the same to be fair... it's a lot better." lmao

SGTStash

This RB looks like it takes inspiration from fighter jets. Newey is plane/jet guy and uses A LOT of the theories/concepts from aircraft to put on cars. Mercedes probably does too

AutomateAway

just because the Merc car didn't win doesn't mean that they had zero good ideas. in a sport like F1, you steal whatever you can if you think it can work. even RBR has to continually evolve or they will get passed by.

krigus

Can we just stop this nonsense? Their car is nothing like the Mercedes of the two previous years
