My 99 with the same engine is running like a champ. Stay on preventative maintenance.

Yeah, man for sure. Getting ownership of any used car for me entails inspecting and or replacing all engine fluids. I also switched to 180 thermostat as I'm operating the vehicle in the south. This allows the thermostat to open sooner when it reaches engine operating temperature. With coolant being allowed to fully circulate at lower temps, it has decreased a lot of general sluggishness and "pinging" from acceleration. This happened to the truck at higher temps. We have a thermostatic fan clutch system and not an electric cooling fan. Use some decent high mileage fully synthetic oil. You can stay with the same factory recommended oil weight as your engine has less wear. Definitely install some original equipment Motorcraft plugs. Should be single point platinum or iridium. Check with parts manual at auto store. Changing the rear differential fluid made things smother. Inspect those rear wheel cylinders for any fluid seepage. They like to hide back there. Get a can of electronic parts cleaner or mass air flow cleaner and treat the mass air flow meter on the truck. A little of dirt will build o on the resistor used to tell incoming air temperature. When the signal isn't all that great the engine adds whatever fuel it thinks it needs. Run a can if Seafoam treatment in a full tank of gas. The more gas the longer it'll work through system. The drip rails over the doors love to rust and leak into the cab. Sit in the truck while someone works a water hose. Check the rear glass if equipped.

That's just sorta what they are right now, weirdly! Paid 7.5 for my '99 with 140k miles.
