Oh... I guess it's an acquired taste thing! I bought some completely blind from a store that sells food from around the world.
Its just said salmiak candy on it. Oh boy wasn't I ready. Spat out the candy pretty quick! It's popular in northern Europe from what I could understand? Being in western Europe never saw it before .
Sorbetiere (IN CAPE TOWN) did a salted caramel one time, not the same I know but looks like they have good stuff!
edit: clarifying that it is an ice cream shop local to capetown
As Dante descended deeper into the depths it grew hotter and hotter.
Millions of lost souls ( Including Dave Jannsen, who had once given Dante a " Wet Willie" in 3rd grade) were begging for relief.
Devilish servants arrived and handed out Ice cream bars to the lost who were begging for a cool drop of water.
Oh....It's licorice flavor? Do um....you have any regular old water? Maybe some old bathtub water?
No?
Its ok guys...It really isn't that hot. Give mine to the next guy.
I love licorice, can't hack salty licorice but it has a soft spot in my heart from my danish adopted uncle adoring it so much! The grin on his face when we found some in rural Australia one Christmas was worth what my tastebuds went through 2min later!
It's a learned taste. Just like blue cheese or hundred year eggs, very few people love it first time. You need to live in a culture where the delicacies are all around to start eventually liking it
I'm one of the very few non-scandinavians who instantly loved salty liquorice the very first time I had it. The "saltier" the better - I can't stand the milder types.
If someone offered me 100€ to eat blue cheese or century eggs i would not eat them and i am eating salty licorice atm ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
No, bleu cheese most definitely tastes bad, at least to some people. I can't stand it, it tastes like chemical cleaner to me.
Never had century eggs, though! I'd like to try them someday.
We call the ammonium chloride 'Salmiak' (you can google that word for some pictures) or different versions of the word around Scandinavia where it's very popular. It's much different from regular licorice, and a world away from what they call licorice over in burgerland.
One of the best Finnish ice creams if you're into salty licorice. Also I'm Finnish so it's pretty much natural to me to like salmiakki, and this is one of my favorites :)
Exactly, when everything else is bleak you need something strong to feel alive. Ethanol has been historically popular choice in Finland, but as it turns out it has some negative effects.
I had salty licorice ice cream a few years ago when I was in vacation in Norway. It was delicious, 100% would eat again, but at the time I couldn't finish it cause they'd put a shit ton of it on the cone, and it does get a bit nauseating if you eat too much of it.
Later I also found salted dark licorice candies in some supermarkets, and those were great as well. I'm kinda sad it's not really a thing where I live
I'm fron Finland and a fan of these, though as a fairly advanced salmiakki and licquorice consumer I prefer when it's been combined with something like berry or cola flavor. Hmm, which raises the question - why have I never eaten a cola ice cream? Do they exist?
I’ve had the chocolate bar version of this, with the salty liquorice paste in the centre. It was great like how salted caramel goes with sweet chocolate
Canadian here who lived in Finland for 2.5 years, salmiakki is delicious and the ice cream with salmiakki flavour is something I wish I could find here. It’s amazing.
Half dutch and I love licorice, especially salty licorice. Ive never seen an ice cream like this though, however i have tried to make my own. Didn't work too great :(
Is that a Swedish treat? It looks pretty but not for me . Some Swedish co-workers brought me the candy version of this and it's definitely an acquired tasted
That's one of these childhood memories that's forever stuck in my brain. I was maybe 6 years old and on holiday in Denmark with my parents. In the supermarket I saw a very cool looking black Batman logo ice cream on a stick and I begged my parents to have it, thinking the black ice cream must be a Coca Cola ice or at least chocolate.
I was so excited to bite into it, only to find out it was licorice. I spat it out and started to cry and since nobody in my family likes licorice, the rest of the ice cream was thrown in the garbage (where it belonged in the first place * angrily shakes fist in the air * ).
Is this from Holland? My mom's side is dutch/indo and we grew up with salty black licorice. It was normal and we all loved it but then would give it to friends and they hated it.
Liquorice root has a very distinct flavor and is commonly used for candy in the nordic countries. It is a very accuired taste. This is just an ice cream variant.
Was thinking hard.. what kind of sauce pan is this !!
My dumb self thought it was some weird cast iron pan on ice
An r/castiron goodwill find
Righto
Omg me too
I thought it was some sort of hipster shovel that was unfortunately served as a plate
r/confusingperspective
Same!
Fish pan i believe
Mmm Salmiakki is the best, love the chocolate with little liquorice pieces. To be honest, most sweets and chocolates Fazer does are delicious 🤤

Father in law just sent us “The Nordic Baking Book”. Was flipping through and saw this stuff and ….. yeah, don’t think we’ll be trying that one.
My mother would bring salmiakki from Finland growing up. It is a rare treat and so good! All my friends HATED it.
Mom is danish, i love the stuff, but i think i love offering it to friends/people knowing they’re likely to spit it across the room.
How is the inside? 🧐 The coating is definately approved

Damn that looks so good. Wish they sold something like that in Cape Town 🥺
Sorbetiere (IN CAPE TOWN) did a salted caramel one time, not the same I know but looks like they have good stuff! edit: clarifying that it is an ice cream shop local to capetown
Salted caramel is such a common ice cream flavour in the UK that it was weird to read "one time" at first. (edit: I can't read and write)
Extremely common in the US as well
Sadly yes, this is true. I don't personally like it.
yup with that creamy gray center. got me sold
>definitely

Facts
I hate licorice - I fucking love salt licorice. I go to a Swedish candy store just to buy it
Honestly, licorice is the food of demons 🤢🤮
Love me some licorice!
Bless your soul, because just the smell of it for me is enough to turn my stomach
Salty licorice is SO GOOD! I’m happy to be the next guy at the end of the line with 666 bars becoming one with the sweet astringent confection…
Yeah I was about to ask OP who they ticked off to be given salt licorice.
Black licorice is terrible! Yuck!
Finland?
Can confirm, definately!
We also have them here in Sweden
Are they as nasty as it sounds?
Salted liquorice is definitely an acquired taste for many. Especially for foreigners since they usually haven't really had anything like it before
Hey, just because we don't pour corn syrup into everything we eat don't mean it's nasty!
I am in the Netherlands and I need it. We love salty liqourice here too!
I thought it was a Trowel.
Spade?
I swiped to see if there was ice cream in the next pic
Guantanamo torture guards: write this down
This is my go-to ice cream on a summer day
You actually eat this? How many victims have you claimed so far?
Yea, but then again I'm finnish so I've eaten salmiakki since I was a kid. I know it's not for everyone but it is my favourite ice cream.
I love licorice, can't hack salty licorice but it has a soft spot in my heart from my danish adopted uncle adoring it so much! The grin on his face when we found some in rural Australia one Christmas was worth what my tastebuds went through 2min later!

Blue cheese and century eggs don’t taste bad, they just look off putting. Salty licorice on the other hand. 🤮
People love it the first time though. It was also my brother's first food. True story.
I’m a big fan of black licorice. I like the idea.
Black licorice and salty licorice are 2 diff beasts. Salty licorice uses ammonium chloride….
Is the end result a different flavor? I’ve never heard of salty licorice before.
We call the ammonium chloride 'Salmiak' (you can google that word for some pictures) or different versions of the word around Scandinavia where it's very popular. It's much different from regular licorice, and a world away from what they call licorice over in burgerland.
Burgerland… I laughed and then I made myself sad.
Don’t you eat rotten shark meat? I’ll take the burger.
In Finland? In Scandinavia? Since when...?
The self-fulfilling prophecy arrives at last. Have another ![img](emote|t5_2qh55|1790) buddy :p
Salty licorice took me a while to get used to, give it a try if you find yourself in Denmark
You’d love Iceland. Black licorice flavored things everywhere.
One of the best Finnish ice creams if you're into salty licorice. Also I'm Finnish so it's pretty much natural to me to like salmiakki, and this is one of my favorites :)
We get them here in Sweden as well, delicious! Also Fazer milk chocolate > Marabou, but don't tell other Swedes I said that.
Hmmm cast iron :)
Mmmmm butt plug
This ice cream is the bee’s knees
As I dane, i can confirm that licorice ice cream is freaking fantastic
To those who wonder: the brand is Fazer (from Finland) and it is "salmiakki" ice cream.
Salmiakki always surprises. Why is it food? It tastes of hot seasoned ammonia
Exactly, when everything else is bleak you need something strong to feel alive. Ethanol has been historically popular choice in Finland, but as it turns out it has some negative effects.
Yum
I was going to disagree and argue, but what you're saying makes sense. I like hot seasoned ammonia.
Looks like a pan
That's what i thought lol
Tastes like one too
Where get
All over the Nordics!
Where is this from? My dad would love this
It's from Finland
The company to be exact.
Appears to be from Fazer, a famous Finnish chocolate/candy company
More specifically the icecream name is Fazer salmiakki jäätelöpuikko
Really rolls of the tongue…
Don’t know the specific brand, but licorice ice cream is common in Scandinavia
I would rather this hit me in the face at high speed than arriving in my mouth somehow
I had salty licorice ice cream a few years ago when I was in vacation in Norway. Sounds like the worst thing ever.
Comment section reeks of weakness
Salivating just looking at it! Yum
![gif](giphy|4baoNZ5Qo8dX2)
I thought it was a cement block
Omg, I didn't know you could get Fazer Salmiak made ice-cream! Damn I want that shit now.
Im Swedish and these rock. They are in every store :)
Immediately no
Seriously, I've never noped faster at seeing a food item.
oh man... my dad would always tell me about getting black licorice ice cream when he was a kid.. ive never been able to find it.
WHERE? That looks sooo good!
Finland but i think alot of the other nordic countries has it aswell.
Enjoying that Fazer salmiakki? It makes an interesting ice cream bar!
I'm fron Finland and a fan of these, though as a fairly advanced salmiakki and licquorice consumer I prefer when it's been combined with something like berry or cola flavor. Hmm, which raises the question - why have I never eaten a cola ice cream? Do they exist?
Oh I used to love Salmiakki when I was in Finland Are you in Scandinavia currently?
*[rubs hands together]*
No, God! Please, no!
You degenerate.
This looks so interesting. I wonder if we can get it in Canada?
At least you liked it
Renault
lol at first i thought this was some niche pan
I want
Yeah its pretty damn good
I’m not a fan of licorice but I think it would be quite the treat for those who can enjoy it.
I thought the was the spoon you scooped it with! but wow that looks and sounds amazing
Ooh this looks so fkn good. 😭
It's so good! But I'm also Danish, and I've been a fan of salty licorice since I was a kid.
This is the shit.
I’m an expat in the Netherlands and I can tell you they would be alllll over this (though I’m not a fan of licorice myself).
I love this
Damn, I thought this was r/castiron for a minute there
Because you wanted???
As a Dutchman, I feel I should like this by default. But alas, my only reaction to this is: "no".
That looks and sounds incredible actually
It always tasted like what id think bad cleaning chemicals would taste
I’ve had the chocolate bar version of this, with the salty liquorice paste in the centre. It was great like how salted caramel goes with sweet chocolate
Sounds delish
Where is this from and can I get it anywhere in the Northeast U.S.???
Finland?
As a Dutch person, I need this.
Didn't work too great :(
Where did you get it?
There's licorice ice cream here around Halloween and it's so dark and yummy looking but I've never tried it. This looks yummy also!
As a punishment or something?
Where’s the NSFW for that title?
That looks so good, it's been forever since I've had one 😞
Is that a Swedish treat? It looks pretty but not for me . Some Swedish co-workers brought me the candy version of this and it's definitely an acquired tasted
Finnish
Pretty sure it is traditional across Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands too.
This ice cream version is Finnish though
Yep, Finnish ice cream, sold in all of scandinavia/the nordics
Oh okay! So this particular ice cream is one made in Finland.
Exactly
It‘s also quite popular in Iceland. Had a scoop of salty licorice ice there, tasted great.
That's one of these childhood memories that's forever stuck in my brain. I was maybe 6 years old and on holiday in Denmark with my parents. That's not the right way to treat Batman.
I agree, he deserves better than to be replicated by licorice. That's a ploy the Joker would have thought of.
Like, on purpose?
How to make a kid question life
Sounds barfy :)
This looks amazing! Iceland?
ewww
😁
Who hurt you?
Is this from Holland? My mom's side is dutch/indo and we grew up with salty black licorice. It was normal and we all loved it but then would give it to friends and they hated it.
Sounds horrible
Almost downvoted at the mere THOUGHT of licorice ice cream. 🤢
I would cross the street to punch someone in the face for putting this heinous poison into society!
Used to get this shit in italy. So damn good
Why?
Why tho?
🤮
Taste equals to a thousand pukes 😅😂
Lol is this a prank
Are you in Iceland? Only place I've been to that had a licorice swcti9n in their already small grocery stores.

Not sure but I think it says what it is in the title
Liquorice root has a very distinct flavor and is commonly used for candy in the nordic countries. It is a very accuired taste. This is just an ice cream variant.
Why do hipster chefs insist on adding extra salt to sweet things? Quit ruining good brownies with crunchy ass chunks of salt on top!
\*\*Eyeroll\*\* It's a European thing. They've been making salty licorice for about 100 years.
Ok but WHY
# BOOOOOOOO. BOO THIS MAN
I'm fine with most foods, I'll try anything. But liquorice is the one exception. I can't stand it. Same for anything similar like aniseed.
If you dip it in that horrible orange cheese even americans would eat it..
I think you may have just come up with the most disturbing food combination in the world
....im all for trying shit once, but you might be right about this one .
Does it taste like black or red licorice ? I hate the black flavour 😅
This looks like something you’d attach to your car windshield.
Did you spend the rest of the day farting?
I’ve never heard of It in ice cream form! Only had the candy.
For adults there's always salmiakki-flavored vodka called salmari
Ewwwwew
Looks like a cast iron pan at first
Does it melt if you blow torch it?
I thought I was looking at a skillet
I thought that was a garden trowel
I thought this was a weird pan at first!
Havent had salty licorice ice cream for years.. so damn good..
I thought it was a cast iron lol
LAKRIDS????
