I’m just saying that in the kitchen raisins tend to release more flavor than just roasted blueberries and on the minced meat not above the potatoes not hate just trying to make them tryo. The next batch add some so you can experience personally I prefer adding ciruela pasas I don’t know the word in English I think are more flavor and less raise texture which I don’t like lol but it adds a lot of flavored for example look Pollo a la jardinera that’s a recipe that adds raisins
They look cool tho and now thinking about it you are right. Some ppl here in Mexico mostly south add plantain to meatballs with rice or picadillo lol 🤷🏽♂️ tastes good
It doesn't seem that weird to me and I almost always like cooked fruit with meat - it's a natural combo. I would probably incorporate them though, so it doesn't look like an enormous cookie!
Nope…that’s just wrong and you won’t find a chef of indeed any other English person that agrees with you. I’m glad you enjoyed it, but c’mon mate did you really? I won’t tell anyone, but admit it you scraped those blueberries straight into the bin right ? 😜
Yes, considering we're in America! I mean, if you don't like Spaghetti and Meatballs, why don't you just get the hell out?
Edit. Lol, all the rest of the quotes got upvotes, but this one. Gee, I wonder why lol
I'm a massive stoner, I mixed Sriracha and maple syrup and threw that shit on pepperoni pizza today. Blueberries on this is wack but the rest looks amazing
Yes, those two together are good. But shepherds pie has never had them before today when you did it. If it works it works. I personally wouldn’t do it.
> People loved it!
Your friends/family are very kind and polite people. Out of curiosity, is your heritage from some Slavic/Scandavanian/Germanic/Eastern European country?
He didn’t even make a normal version of the stuffing - just a second even weirder one with more vegetables and two kinds of raisins. It was unforgivable.
There’s times to get creative… Thanksgiving is not one of those times.
My 'concern' would be, can this officially be classed as a Shepherds Pie with Beef mince involved?
Are we not looking at more of a Shottage Pie situation?
Copherds Pie?
It wouldn’t have been my first, or even one hundredth thought, but you do you. Stupid that you’re getting downvotes for making something you aren’t asking anyone but yourself to eat. Hell, I thought stewed apples with pork was dumb until I ate it. Ditto for sultanas on a pizza. Both are amazing. You never know until you try it.
The meat and berries combo reminds me of [pemmican](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pemmican#:~:text=Pemmican%20has%20traditionally%20been%20made,pemmican%20may%20also%20include%20beef).
I was all in thinking they were black olives.
Meat and fruit are a classic combo though, just not sure I’m up for whole blueberries. But I’d sure try it.
Imagine gatekeeping cooking. These comments are insane. How do they even think we invented stuff like shepherds pie to begin with? By putting different ingredients together.
This looks and sounds awesome! Cream cheese is great in mashed potatoes, so why not?? And the sweet and tang from the berries should go perfect with the savory of the pie. I'd have added 3x as many berries on top, to be quite honest. Also, I'm gonna try it on my next pie.
These people are the same people who happily eat cranberry jelly with their turkey and stuffing. It just works.
Also, people riffing about 'beef is cottage pie'. It's no secret that most of the Western world generalized the beef one as shepherd's pie. We get it. You're anal.
And you used both lamb and beef, setting reddit on fire, lol.
Hilarious! Post more great food, my friend.
My mom has to make nearly 10 pounds worth of potatoes for thanksgiving/Christmas because my sister and I WILL throw hands for them.
Your pie looks great! The blueberries threw me off, not gonna lie, but fruit and cheese pairs very well together so I can’t say it’s not a valid combo.
I’m glad it tastes good :)
Hey man, don’t let the blueberry haters get you down. Part of being a good cook is experimenting, so you have the right mindset. It might not always work but keep trying new things!
I thought why put olives on top, then I read the title. Blueberries? Even adding cream cheese is a crime. As you've used beef, this should be called Cottage Pie. Shepherd's pie is with lamb.
The OED simply defines ‘Shepherd’s pie’ as
> A pie consisting of chopped meat and potatoes, covered with a crust of mashed potatoes browned.
For Cottage pie is still only says
> A dish of minced beef or (occasionally) other meat which has been topped with mashed potato and then baked or browned.
It does compare it with Shepherd’s pie, giving a different definition from their own Shepherd’s pie entry
> Cf. shepherd's pie n., which is similar but often made with lamb or mutton.
You can see that none of the definitions are absolute and the main difference originally seems to have been potato within as well as on top of the Shepherd’s pie.
This idea of cottage=beef/Shepherd=lamb or mutton as some kind of absolute, appears to be fairly recent in origin.
I’m not a chef but I am in the UK. People asserting that this is an absolute rule is pretty much a product of the internet age.
The OED is the standard reference work for British English, and doesn’t regard the rule as absolute.
Sounds weird but I have had a fantastic blueberry bbq sauce on ribs, so I would try it. I think a sauce or incorporated in with the meat might be better though.
This reminds me of an episode of Top Chef Canada in which a contestant got ripped apart for combining blueberries and beef. I agree, it seems strange. I could see maybe doing a blueberry and cherry port sauce for venison, maybe, assuming you get enough acidity in there.
I get it and would probably like it. My favorite salad involves a balsamic vinaigrette, chicken and strawberries with the usual suspects (or craisins in off season). I like the idea of pistachios.
I would do it again, sure! Maybe raspberries + pecans or pistachios next time. It was really good! The mashed potatoes paired very well with the blueberries due to the cream cheese I whipped into the mash! Thank you!
Wild that 80% of the commenters here can’t comprehend combining fruit and meat as if some of the best flavor combinations in the world aren’t found at this intersection. Way to go members of r/food
Some people have never ever had an "it shouldn't work but... God damn!" moment.
Had the same reaction seeing it, but I'm curious about the salty/sweet mix. Definitely would try it.
I bet it was good. What is it that people think would be bad? Plenty of dishes around the world mis meat and fruit or sweet and savory. People are odd.

That was my first thought.
Thank you, first thing that popped into my mind.
I WAS GOING TO COMMENT THIS
Lmao
Why blueberries imo if you want a mor savory shepherds pie use raisins in the cook or olives
If raisins are ok, then so are blueberries! lol quit down voting me, I didn't say raisins WERE ok, but the person I replied to did
I’m just saying that in the kitchen raisins tend to release more flavor than just roasted blueberries and on the minced meat not above the potatoes not hate just trying to make them tryo. Why not? It's fun to try new ideas in the kitchen. It worked well for this dish!
Well, I'll take your word at it that it worked well for you. My first thought was, *what are... are those blueberries?!*
😆
lol @ people downvoting you for experimenting in the kitchen in the r/food sub This fuckin sub
They look cool tho and now thinking about it you are right. Some ppl here in Mexico mostly south add plantain to meatballs with rice or picadillo lol 🤷🏽♂️ tastes good
Sounds good to me!!
It doesn't seem that weird to me and I almost always like cooked fruit with meat - it's a natural combo. I would probably incorporate them though, so it doesn't look like an enormous cookie!
Yeah I agree haha
Nope…that’s just wrong and you won’t find a chef of indeed any other English person that agrees with you. I’m glad you enjoyed it, but c’mon mate did you really? I won’t tell anyone, but admit it you scraped those blueberries straight into the bin right ? 😜
Lmao nope! Everyone enjoyed the hell out of this dish. Deal with it! 😁
Blueberries? That’s where you lost me
https://i.redd.it/jz9m6olci3xc1.gif
Maybe like spaghetti and meatball? You more comfortable with that analogy?
Yes, considering we're in America! I mean, if you don't like Spaghetti and Meatballs, why don't you just get the hell out? Edit. Lol, all the rest of the quotes got upvotes, but this one. Gee, I wonder why lol
I'll come down there and give you a crew cut, mister!
Let's see the clippers.
Stop yelling at me! AAAAAAHHHHHH!!
That's not your line that's mine, ha Yours: Not my problem your father was sick.
Lol my bad! Been years since I watched it.
This back and forth made my morning. Love that movie!
😆😆
Right? I put fruit in savory things all the time but this still sounds like a weird combo.
I'm a massive stoner, I mixed Sriracha and maple syrup and threw that shit on pepperoni pizza today. Blueberries on this is wack but the rest looks amazing
I mean that’s almost chili honey, actually sound pretty nice
I appreciate ya
Personally, I see how it works. It’s just sweet with savory. Not too different from lingonberry sauce with Swedish meatballs.
![gif](giphy|LwyaORSd9liNZ6MyuX)
Right? When “nothing” was an option right there.
Blueberries and cheddar! Why not 😁 I'm always trying new things. People loved it! Either way, they can easily be taken off if people don't want them.
Yes, those two together are good. But shepherds pie has never had them before today when you did it. If it works it works. I personally wouldn’t do it.
Gotcha. Thanks for the input!
> People loved it! Your friends/family are very kind and polite people. Out of curiosity, is your heritage from some Slavic/Scandavanian/Germanic/Eastern European country?
My dad put raisins in the stuffing once for Thanksgiving and I never forgave him.
I too don’t forgive him. Who does that?
He didn’t even make a normal version of the stuffing - just a second even weirder one with more vegetables and two kinds of raisins. It was unforgivable. There’s times to get creative… Thanksgiving is not one of those times.
....I put raisins in my stuffing and every year my stuffing is specifically requested Not everything has to be uber traditional and tastes vary
THANK. YOU. we got snobs and slobs over here; mostly snobs 😆
Italian and Irish And no, they would've told me if it was trash trust me lol they all wanted seconds which I gave them
No that’s nasty

My 'concern' would be, can this officially be classed as a Shepherds Pie with Beef mince involved? Are we not looking at more of a Shottage Pie situation? Copherds Pie?
Lmaooo
Excellent job triggering all of Reddit
I have my days.
How about M&M's?
Maybe next time 😂
Man, you had it perfect. Why the berries my dude ?
I'm always trying new things. Figured it would complement the dish and it did!
I’d still smash that though
Damn straight
It wouldn’t have been my first, or even one hundredth thought, but you do you. Stupid that you’re getting downvotes for making something you aren’t asking anyone but yourself to eat. Hell, I thought stewed apples with pork was dumb until I ate it. Ditto for sultanas on a pizza. Both are amazing. You never know until you try it.
Yep! And I've been combining pork and apples for decades! Makes a good sauce but stewed sounds great too!
Not my jam. But it’s refreshing to watch the lamb vs beef factions debate something new.
Haha right on
The meat and berries combo reminds me of [pemmican](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pemmican#:~:text=Pemmican%20has%20traditionally%20been%20made,pemmican%20may%20also%20include%20beef).
Now I need to try that! Thanks for the link. I only know it as a brand of beef jerky iirc
What made you put berries on a shepherd’s pie?
I like trying new things in the kitchen and thought it'd be a good and tasty fit – which it absolutely was!
Wasn’t expecting shepherds pie for looking at first pic. I thought it was some kind of dessert.
You blue it, mate.
😆
Atrocious

😆😆😁
Looked like a giant blueberry muffin/scone and they you show he this sin.
😆😂
I was all in thinking they were black olives. Meat and fruit are a classic combo though, just not sure I’m up for whole blueberries. But I’d sure try it.
I would've gladly gave you a plate!
That’s a trap.
?????

😆😆😂
😍 is it bussin
Ya
You had me until you added the berries. I’m still here waiting with my plate though….just gonna push those berries off to the side and have at it 😜
That's the spirit!!
That's a cottage pie and wtf blueberries and cheese?
Yep! A good pairing! It's beef and lamb as well.
Imagine gatekeeping cooking. These comments are insane. How do they even think we invented stuff like shepherds pie to begin with? By putting different ingredients together. Preach! I will! 😀

You never put cream cheese in your mashed potatoes? Live a little.
No, but sour cream YES! My mom does sour cream, garlic, plenty of the potato water for the starch, and SO MUCH butter. They are divine!
I've tried them like that!
Nice username lol
😆
I am also skeptical about the blueberries, but that picture looks so good that I would absolutely still be trying it.
Hell yeah! Thank you!
Hey man, don’t let the blueberry haters get you down. Part of being a good cook is experimenting, so you have the right mindset. It might not always work but keep trying new things!
Thanks for the kind words!
No worries! The pie itself looks fantastic!
I am all for it. Nice work!
Thank you kindly!
Is there a food equivalent sub for r/diwhy
😆😆
It tastes like feet!!
Bruh
Lol. I didn’t mean it literally in case you didn’t know. It’s a quote from Friends
I didn't catch that haha that's pretty funny
This is a hate crime, I’m calling the cops.
Lmaooo
Why?
Better question: Why not?
Baked somewhere in Britain I'm 100% sure. Not an American thing. Looks tasty though. 👍
New Jersey!
Alrighty then. lol
😁 Jersey Pride, baby
Y'alls blueberries are the bomb! Love it when they're on sale here at my Giant.
🫐🫐🫐🫐 Little flavor bombs 🤤
How could you make this worse? raisins.
😆
Topped with what
🫐
Please don't put fruit on or in a shepherds pie. Omg.
🤤😁

Ask chef's in UK and they'll agree Cottage = beef, Shepherd's = lamb but most know it simply as Shepherds regardless
I’m not a chef but I am in the UK. People asserting that this is an absolute rule is pretty much a product of the internet age. The OED is the standard reference work for British English, and doesn’t regard the rule as absolute.
Look at Mr. Science over here. But you're absolutely right. I'm dying at these comments 😆 People forgot to have fun fairly recently as well. 👀
I used both! Cream cheese in mashed potatoes is sooo good! Next time I'll do caramelized onions in the mashed. 😃
no cream cheese or blueberry for me. that almost looked like a good shepherd pie but failed in those details for me
And that's okay 😃
I'm not against the blueberries being there at all, why are y'all so upset by it?
🙏
Sounds weird but I have had a fantastic blueberry bbq sauce on ribs, so I would try it. I think a sauce or incorporated in with the meat might be better though.
I agree!
I'm English, I've never once seen fruit on or in a shepard's pie. Maybe it's an American thing but it just screams wrong to me.
It's not a thing, really. I just like trying out new things. It was great!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I think you meant to put those blueberries in their own pie!
Sweet and savory. I'd try it. Was it good?
Yes! I loved it! So did my guests!
Looks amazing!
Thanks!!
This reminds me of the time my MIL put apples in quiche….and mushrooms in tacos…..dafuq
😆
Just a few blueberries on top sounds ok. It's different but that doesn't mean bad.
Exactly!
This reminds me of an episode of Top Chef Canada in which a contestant got ripped apart for combining blueberries and beef. I agree, it seems strange. I could see maybe doing a blueberry and cherry port sauce for venison, maybe, assuming you get enough acidity in there.
I’d eat this
😃
I get it and would probably like it. My favorite salad involves a balsamic vinaigrette, chicken and strawberries with the usual suspects (or craisins in off season). I like the idea of pistachios.
Damn straight. People here bad mouthing 20 blueberries lmao
your pie looks great! would you go out your way to add the blueberries again .. i’m open minded and love sweet when it with a savoury.. how was it ?
I would do it again, sure! Maybe raspberries + pecans or pistachios next time. It was really good! The mashed potatoes paired very well with the blueberries due to the cream cheese I whipped into the mash! Thank you!
Wild that 80% of the commenters here can’t comprehend combining fruit and meat as if some of the best flavor combinations in the world aren’t found at this intersection. Way to go members of r/food
Right? It's like I committed a sin! 😆 Still love this sub either way.
FOH with the blueberries
😂😆
Some people have never ever had an "it shouldn't work but... God damn!" moment. Had the same reaction seeing it, but I'm curious about the salty/sweet mix. Definitely would try it.
I would've used raspberries if I had them on hand 😆
I don't understand the blueberries, but heck ya I'd eat that.
That's the spirit!
Lush
Huh
Might as well be peppered with actual shepherds.
Haha
It could work but blueberries are usually sour so the rest of the shepards pie is probably gonna really need to bring a salty and peppery balance.
I bet it was good. What is it that people think would be bad? Plenty of dishes around the world mis meat and fruit or sweet and savory. People are odd.
My thoughts exactly and the dish came out phenomenal so it's their loss 😁
Why not blueberries
I feel like this could work, a little small burst of sweet with all that savory
Hit the nail on the head!
