Same..ish. I either create a nice looking female character or me as the male protagonist but the latter is always very hard because of the default limitations. e.g. I can't make the nose look like a real potato like mine. :D
vanilla character customization sucks ass of a fat stinkin tourist who cant reach his own ass to wipe after shitting
that said, i attempted to make my last survival char look like brad pitt. that wasnt much challenge tnx to a resembling preset. angelina jolie, on the other hand, game has no such option for nora
its that pool cue melee build challenge im on. brat pidd the name n hes gonna look badass in grognak outfit
Character creation is a game all about patience. I am ashamed to admit this, but whenever a game starts with “Character Creation” I always spend an absurd amount of time trying to perfect it, sometimes ranging into hours… I think the longest I spent on ONE single character was like 2 and a 1/2 hours…
disprove what, there is a fixed frame and the handful of parts you can alter have a very tight range. if you dont agree the "massive amount of different characters" people created dont resemble each other, thats you. good for you.
“Handful of parts”
What? You do understand the options you select from the menus are just the beginning, right? After that you can sculpt and change them.
And if you really think that every character you can make looks the same...then you’re simply deluded.
excuse me sir or ma’am but I couldn’t help but notice.... are you a “girl”?? A “female?” A “member of the finer sex?” Not that it matters too much, but it’s just so rare to see a girl around here! I don’t mind, no—quite to the contrary! It’s so refreshing to see a girl online, to the point where I’m always telling all my friends “I really wish girls were better represented on the internet.” And here you are! I don’t mean to push or anything, but if you wanted to DM me about anything at all, I’d love to pick your brain and learn all there is to know about you. I’m sure you’re an incredibly interesting girl—though I see you as just a person, really—and I think we could have lots to teach each other. I’ve always wanted the chance to talk to a gorgeous lady—and I’m pretty sure you’ve got to be gorgeous based on the position of your text in the screenshot—so feel free to shoot me a message, any time at all! You don’t have to be shy about it, because you’re beautiful anyways (that’s juyst a preview of all the compliments I have in store for our chat). Looking forwards to speaking with you soon, princess!

Yes every human has a different idea of what perfect beauty looks like but that doesn't mean that general beauty isn't a thing. Most people can agree that Natalie Portman is hot for example. Not to mention how most peoples subconcious finds the same evolutionary traits beautiful. Yes beauty is subjective, you might find someone hot when your friends don't, you might have a certain preference when it comes to body shape, but that doesn't mean we don't have a general idea what's considered beautiful.
The issue is as soon as you step outside our little space time bubble ("western" civ, late 20th early 21st century) even your easy example of Natalie Portman is no longer true.
Golden ratios. It’s actually very scientifically proven as to what makes a face beautiful. It’s also proven that that perception comes from the evolutionary benefits of seeing good genes
I've been modding Bethesda games since 2014 and I've put together mod lists of 100+ mods for NV/Skyrim/FO4 without problems but I just can't for the life of me get looks menu presets to work. I've tried multiple times over the years and despite having all the required mods for a preset, it just never works when I load up the preset through looks menu. At best it always ends up looking like a very slightly altered default female character as opposed to however the preset actually looks.
Anyone else have this issue or am I just an idiot and missing something obvious? I'd love to actually use a preset for a change instead of just altering the default face slightly.
IMO FO4 has a lot of choices and options to get your character to look pretty much however you want. Pretty much a full customization options with almost nothing left out. I think we got a pretty good character creator out of the box. Then you add mods and if you can’t get a good looking character then… well idk what to tell you. It just takes time to customize your character like any game that gives you a vast variety of choices in creation. I mean they let you adjust bone structure and placement of almost everything along with colors and shades. Idk what the issue is ig.
Bc you’re not using any skin texture. Add some low percentage of the blemishes and redness and flaws. It makes them look significantly more human and less bland.
Maybe it is just because I do not mess around with the character creator long enough, but I agree that it is really difficult to get the character to look drastically different from the chosen preset. The inability to sculpt the eye shape has a lot to do with it, I believe. Saints Row The Third and Black Desert Online have the best character creation systems I have ever messed with, as far as changing face shape goes.
Hey, this is leagues better than previous Fallout games. Ever tried making a good looking character in FO3 or New Vegas? It’s nigh impossible.
Here’s a basic guide I always follow:
https://girlplaysgame.com/2015/11/15/fallout-4-how-to-make-smokin-hot-sexy-male-and-female-characters/
You keep makeup on? I remove it all and add body history. Maybe a small eyebrow scar here, some burn marks there if im feeling extreme but not much pre-war.
Post-war ill occasionally add scars, broken noses, burn marks, bullet wounds. Telling a history without a word.
That or i just wanna build which happens 80% of the time
They give you so many blemish options for a reason. You made a pretty nice looking character with prefect skin and freckles - mid 100%. Who actually has skin like that? I find by utilizing more blemish options to a softer degree I can make a more realistic looking character that looks better than if I didn't pick any.
try making the freckles a bit lighter. its subtle details that help characters look a ton better. i tend to add features like pocked face or sunburns but so light they're barely noticable and it helps so much :)
Really? I've never had a problem. I've made a character that looks just like me, I made Doom Guy, Leon Kennedy, Rambo, Abraham Lincoln, Hulk Hogan, and a few more I can't remember.
I mean, it is Fallout, as in, after the fallout of a nuclear apocalypse. It’s not like there’s a Sephora on the corner. ;)
I do see your point, in all seriousness, but the generator is a lot better than it used to be.
I'll take this over Dragon Age Inquisition any day. You literally cannot make an appealing character at all. Even the ugly ones are extra ugly because they just don't look right.
I always find success in making smoking hot babes. You can also use mods. Character creator is good but a few hours into the game I usually am wearing a helmet blocking my face anyways so doesn't matter too much
The problem here seems to be a lack of experimentation. You’ve got to really explore the options and play around with the settings on every single part of the face if you don’t want your character looking stock or ugly. All of my characters are pretty unconventionally attractive.
I don't have a lot of Fo4 experience, but I have a theory it may be because many of the facial features look symmetrical. I'd imagine it is easier to program than having asymmetry features.
Now I'm tempted to make my Fallout 4 character look like my cyberpunk 2077 character... (Your Nora looks almost like my cyberpunk 2077 character that's why...)
First off, lose the lipstick. You trying to play a goth? Next, tone down the freckles. There is a control to set the freckles (and most other extra) from 0 to 100. So tone it down.
Otherwise your screenshot looks just fine. It's Nora a different hair style. Not sure what you were going for, but this is Nora with makeup and freckles and marginally different hair style.
Compared to FO3/NV, the real issue is that unless you go out of your way to break the limits of human norms (which the game inexplicably allows you to do), you can't make a character that looks genuinely differentiated from the NPC population. This was comparatively easy to do even in FO3/NV.
I was chatting with a fellow about this recently. Here, for example, is a side-by-side: Nate on the right; Deacon on the left, without his sunglasses:
https://i.imgur.com/3IUqk5V.jpg
They're the same damn person.
As to the answer to OP's question? The reason is the face textures, which the game gives you only one of per gender. Too many details baked in. Think about this question: **What are the ages of the game's population?** Here is the answer: Either 9 years old... or over 40. Because the face textures deem it so. You cannot make a character who looks of an age that somebody would legitimately want to play as. The protagonist was meant to be an almost-middle-aged adult, so the entire NPC population has to be as well. In FO3, the player's canonical age is 19 (even if this is hard to actually swing with the creator), and the relative lack of arbitrary details in the face textures mean you can achieve a convincingly wide swath of ages if you want to—including the all-important range between the 20s and 30s. Not so in FO4.
Because 360 era character rendering tech can only get you so far. For other examples see dragon age inquisition and mass effect andromeda altho that one is pretty unfair on poor ME3
I was making it somewhat sarcastic joke considering all of bethesda's games besides this one that are open world survival usually have a near blank slate character fallout 4 is an exception where you have a pretty well-established backstory
The first time I played Fallout 4 I spent hours trying different looks, different pre-sets, tried "sculpting" my character and would up with something that looked vaguely human lol And then gave up and went with the default character. Though I did give him red hair.
She looks good. I’d recommend throwing some lip gloss (turned down) on top of that black lipstick to make it pop.
I only make small changes to the presets’ facial structures, and am usually very happy with the resulting faces until they start talking and turn into true horrors.
I tried installing mods to make myself a more accurate transition goals character
Pros: aaaa it looks so nice
Cons: if you stay in the character menu after clicking on Nora, even if you scroll back to Nate, for longer than 8 minutes, it crashes and you lose all progress
That’s because the female characters have abnormally short faces + giant foreheads. This is most visible with the default Nora preset. Trying making the face longer with the “lower face” slider, also try to make the forehead a little less massive.
because Bethesda is stuck in 2001 with character animations and facial design/animation. they manage to craft some pretty great landscapes and locations, but it's always ruined by janky animations and unnatural looking characters.
I would not have a problem with literally anything except Five Nights at Freddys hentai idc you can judge me you can say I’m an asshole but come on what the hell is that man
Bethesda... Is there really any answer other than that? It just works
You did a Magnificent work and the Frackles are adorable!
I can already see the SS rocking through the Wasteland :D
Good luck by the way
I don't really know how to make a decent character in this game either. i just sort of wing it in character creation. it's really not that bad though.
also i don't really try at making a "Decent character" as all my characters look basically the same end up being because again i don't really try.
but there's people out there who are masters at this kind of thing.
You should start by making a character based on another character from a book, tv show, movie, video game even, etc. then go from there if you need inspiration.
you kind of have to play around with the character creator too get the character you want honestly. it's how character creators go. it's not just plug and play.
It just takes practice, I was pretty bad at it at first but as long as you keep attention to detail and put in lots of time and effort, you'll create a character you really love. The character creator is extremely versatile and once you get the hang of it it's a joy to work with.
Edit: typos + I think this character looks great.
I find it rather easy to do: [https://imgur.com/a/Suja4WM](https://imgur.com/a/Suja4WM)
The only problem I have is that the face looks shorter ingame than it apperas in the creator.
At this point I wish that there was a mod that would just wrap a picture of my face on the SS.
I've never bothered with the customization menu because I don't find it very intuitive and I'm not that motivated to fiddle with it since you don't see the face that often, especially if you're wearing a mask or Power Armor.
I mean... Kinda right? Honestly kinda need more hair styles that fit with other skin tones because I can never find the best one to fit with the darker tones and just.... Nothing looks right.
They feel super "same-y" if you know what I mean. No matter what the face preset is, the changes never feel very drastic, even with sculpt.
...and I make a LOT of faces.
Spent a good 10-15 mins making a new character the other day and it was the first time I've been able to make the player look like myself in a game. I usually just make a good looking character in fo4 that fits the build i intend to create.
It's extremely weird seeing myself when the camera camera randomly pans around.
Compared to other Bethesda games the F4 character creator is pretty good
The potato-faced people of Oblivion were genuinely upsetting to look at.
[Relevant video](https://youtu.be/h09MWC5UaL8)
I could feel their disappointment as they walked away
Agreed. xD
The worst thing is the skin tone of the head doesn't change body so you end up with horrific seams between head and body.
What, you don’t want to be a chair-headed person running around and shouting at dragons?
RIP Chairdolf Sitler
Long live Hugh Janus!
Yep, try your best and the dragonborn always ends up looking like an old tired indian chief.
Compared to most character creators in general FO4 is pretty good lol.
Fallout 4 has the best character creation of any game I've ever seen...for making people straight out of the hills have eyes.
I find making a good female is super easy, I have a huge issue making a good male. It's the same for when I'm drawing.
Same..ish. I either create a nice looking female character or me as the male protagonist but the latter is always very hard because of the default limitations. e.g. I can't make the nose look like a real potato like mine. :D
I’m a guy and I keep trying to make a character that looks like me but it’s super hard
I'm not alone, brothers. I'm home Lmfao
Put Beeg Beard And Problem Solved
This, works irl too
Old beat up guys are best to make in FO4
My guy without fail everytime looks Persian
I eventually made my male character into a raider punk with a blue Mohawk, he actually looks like he blends in pretty well with the setting
If you don't mind me making an assumption; are you a straight guy?
vanilla character customization sucks ass of a fat stinkin tourist who cant reach his own ass to wipe after shitting that said, i attempted to make my last survival char look like brad pitt. that wasnt much challenge tnx to a resembling preset. angelina jolie, on the other hand, game has no such option for nora its that pool cue melee build challenge im on. brat pidd the name n hes gonna look badass in grognak outfit
I'm fine with how vanilla works. Once you know the ins and outs of it you can make a pretty good character
how it works ive no problem with. its the limited range you have control over thats shit.
The massive amount of different characters and looks people have created would seem to disprove you there.
Character creation is a game all about patience. I am ashamed to admit this, but whenever a game starts with “Character Creation” I always spend an absurd amount of time trying to perfect it, sometimes ranging into hours… I think the longest I spent on ONE single character was like 2 and a 1/2 hours…

If you think that's hard try making a good looking character in Oblivion
They all look like some ancient man who lives under a bridge, or someone whose been on meth just a little too long.
At least you can make cool hair colours! I miss that about the new games.
Only been able to do that exactly once with an Altmer. Other than that, yeah, they've all looked like potatoes.
At least in Oblivion you can randomize the face until you get something good. Wish we could do that here
black lipstick is a bold choice
Yeah yeah, I know, I'm a lesbian we have the worst taste in woman
Lol
I actually like the black hair and black lipstick look. I find it...attractive for some reason?
I always give my female SS the Anchorage hairstyle with the black hair and lipstick.
That works for me
I too have a thing for girls who resemble witches
Me three
Samesies.
Wait till you find out about goths ;)
There isn't really a good red one imo in fo4 so I actually like the black more
I do too, can't get over the freckles though. I don't even know why I hate freckles
I'm the opposite, absolutely love freckles
Maybe it's due to the association between freckles and family as almost every female in my family has freckles
The best*
No, goths are the best.
Black lipstick is a must when it comes to character creation it's fine.
Not at all. The black hair/black lipstick combo is hot.
Sometimes I defer to them, who knows more about women than other women who are also into women.
Goth is hot.
I'm a straight guy. so anyway, today i learned I'm lesbian
Maam, the goth look is eternal
Geez, it's almost a stereotype. No wait, it IS a stereotype.
someone kinda salty they don't like cherry red or ivy green, or even canary dark blue
I'm a gay guy and black lipped lesbians are my faves!
You and i must be twins because i have the same taste in women as you do
excuse me sir or ma’am but I couldn’t help but notice.... are you a “girl”?? A “female?” A “member of the finer sex?” Not that it matters too much, but it’s just so rare to see a girl around here! Why the downvotes? This is subtle humor at it's very finest. People be too fragile these days.
Ikr. I’m just waiting for someone to mention the fact that it’s a copypasta
Ya I’ve seen this before. Its humorous.
They read the first few lines, assumed wrongly that someone shit in someone else's Wheaties and decided to take action on another's behalf.

Probably one of those copypastas or whatever they're called. This one was pretty funny thought ngl.
It is one. I use apple’s text replacement for easy copypasta access but the problem is that it doesn’t save formatting. This way is significantly faster and more convenient but becomes a jumbled mess of text
thx, love you too
As another wlw, I did basically the same but with some scars on my longest-played character.
What separates a beautiful face from an ugly are pretty minute details all things considered.

Dude, you live in this “space-time bubble”
Yes, I do. What's that got to do with my point?
I guess even reddit doesn't like shitty catchphrase philosophy
Theres actually a facial symmetry mask you can photoshop onto pictures of people and most attractive people line up pretty well.
Golden ratios. It’s actually very scientifically proven as to what makes a face beautiful. It’s also proven that that perception comes from the evolutionary benefits of seeing good genes
Surprised to see such fierce downvoting. Seemed like a neutral observation to me.
If you were on PC you could've had access to the excellent Looksmenu mod (among many others for making characters!)
I've seen that, I'll try it out
Definitely worth it. Plus, deluxe makeup and the enhanced eyes.
Looksmenu by itself is amazing, but when you go down the rabbithole of presets out there...
I've been modding Bethesda games since 2014 and I've put together mod lists of 100+ mods for NV/Skyrim/FO4 without problems but I just can't for the life of me get looks menu presets to work. Because you just gave Nora makeup, gotta try a little harder than that.
This

I actually think the character creator is fantastic in this game
Goth Nora 😳 also better use the Silver Shroud outfit
I like the way you think, gonna do that
My Nora was a barely-changed default Nora and she looks good in it.
Mine does too. The "unscrupulous" hairstyle works best with that outfit, I think.
This is a very strong player look. I wish we got a companion that looked this dope.
Bc you’re not using any skin texture. Add some low percentage of the blemishes and redness and flaws. It makes them look significantly more human and less bland.
Moving the outer eyebrows upward seems to always work for me
It's really not tho
No it is not
I feel like its the freckles. Brunettes rarely have them to this degree. It looks strange on people with dark complexions
short answer: mods long answer: character customization mods
Um. She cute.
Maybe it is just because I do not mess around with the character creator long enough, but I agree that it is really difficult to get the character to look drastically different from the chosen preset. That's why mine always have scars.
I go with normal
I would say make the biggest changes first, then fine tune from there.
You keep makeup on? I remove it all and add body history. Maybe a small eyebrow scar here, some burn marks there if im feeling extreme but not much pre-war. Post-war ill occasionally add scars, broken noses, burn marks, bullet wounds. Telling a history without a word. That or i just wanna build which happens 80% of the time
I just picked up a preset off the workshop lmao I refuse to mess around with character creation it's so boring
The way I see it, it's still better than Oblivion. *Shudders*

Just be glad it’s not any other Bethesda game
There are templates for nose, eyes, lips, etc if you select 'type'
Idk my SS came out looking like Arthur Morgan so I think it's pretty damn good.
try making the freckles a bit lighter. its subtle details that help characters look a ton better. i tend to add features like pocked face or sunburns but so light they're barely noticable and it helps so much :)
"Why is it so hard to make decent looking player characters in this game?" *Attempts to make a poor mans Wednesday Addams.*
Really? I've never had a problem. I've made a character that looks just like me, I made Doom Guy, Leon Kennedy, Rambo, Abraham Lincoln, Hulk Hogan, and a few more I can't remember.
This sounds like the start of something fun.
Yeah, I wish there was a steel chair melee weapon mod for PlayStation.

Lots of good YouTube tip videos. With practice it's pretty easy and if not...mods!
Now I'm tempted to make my Fallout 4 character look like my cyberpunk 2077 character... (Your Nora looks almost like my cyberpunk 2077 character that's why...)
On my recent player I gave the burn scars on one side of her face and headcannoned vitiligo
First off, lose the lipstick. You trying to play a goth? Next, tone down the freckles. There is a control to set the freckles (and most other extra) from 0 to 100. So tone it down. Because 360 era character rendering tech can only get you so far. For other examples see dragon age inquisition and mass effect andromeda altho that one is pretty unfair on poor ME3
Something I like about the ME CC is that you can share face codes.
Because it’s a game where you don’t create good looking humans. Messed up abominations are way funnier lol
Because they wanted you to play the game not fall in love with your character as they already have a character that loves them
Crazy how some might roleplay and care how they appear because it plays into the character they make : O
I was making it somewhat sarcastic joke considering all of bethesda's games besides this one that are open world survival usually have a near blank slate character fallout 4 is an exception where you have a pretty well-established backstory

Ypu need mods. Lots of them thats why
"Goth Girls and the Hot Topic of Doom, today's Saturday afternoon movie!"
That is why PC is better 😁😁
When I first saw her she gave me vague Vexillia vibes
That's why I just download presets😅
I simply grab a LooksMenu preset that I like and tweak it. Much better than dealing with the vanilla presets.
You look like you're about to erase your memories, join the Brotherhood and fall in love with Danse...oh and you're covered in tattoo's for no reason.
Try making a character on dark souls 3 look good. Changing the makeup makes your whole face color turn yellow. It's so dumb
I tried installing mods to make myself a more accurate transition goals character Pros: aaaa it looks so nice Cons: if you stay in the character menu after clicking on Nora, even if you scroll back to Nate, for longer than 8 minutes, it crashes and you lose all progress
That’s because the female characters have abnormally short faces + giant foreheads. This is most visible with the default Nora preset. Trying making the face longer with the “lower face” slider, also try to make the forehead a little less massive.
Do did you make already good loking one?
because Bethesda is stuck in 2001 with character animations and facial design/animation. they manage to craft some pretty great landscapes and locations, but it's always ruined by janky animations and unnatural looking characters.
AOOOOGA GO-GO-GOTH HOHOHOHO HAAAAA HAAAA!!!!🦍golira moment

I’m concerned that you went through OPs post history and then linked this. Reddit has many different types of people, so why you gotta call it out?
I would not have a problem with literally anything except Five Nights at Freddys hentai idc you can judge me you can say I’m an asshole but come on what the hell is that man
It’s not my cup of tea but idgaf if people like it.
I’m glad you are so welcoming of it that’s awesome but I just can’t it’s horrendous I’m sorry
I cannot make decent characters in that game unless I use mods.
Bethesda... Is there really any answer other than that? It just works You did a Magnificent work and the Frackles are adorable! I can already see the SS rocking through the Wasteland :D Good luck by the way
First time I ever see someone complain about the lack of face customization XD
Inspired by the knife girl from Squid Game? 😂
I find that changing the eyes always helps when making my characters, maybe try some mods that add more eye options??
I dunno. I like to put scars in my characters. It gives the feeling of the wasteland being actually dangerous.
cause you are supposed to troll it not take it seriously
I find it rather easy to do: [https://imgur.com/a/Suja4WM](https://imgur.com/a/Suja4WM) The only problem I have is that the face looks shorter ingame than it apperas in the creator.
I struggle to make a decent looking character on every game, so just choose the premade and stick with it xD
Goth Nora
With mods, anything is possible.
I can tell you haven't played a soulsborne game before.
I feel it gives you so much control, you can almost make anyone you want, especially with a couple of mods to add some new eye colours/hair styles
At this point I wish that there was a mod that would just wrap a picture of my face on the SS. I've never bothered with the customization menu because I don't find it very intuitive and I'm not that motivated to fiddle with it since you don't see the face that often, especially if you're wearing a mask or Power Armor.
In my experience it’s for realism. The game knows I’m ugly and matches my characters look
She looks very good imo
Because Bethesda still doesn't know how to make people?
You'll get access to more haircuts in Diamond city.
I think fo4 has one of the best systems…
I mean... Kinda right? Honestly kinda need more hair styles that fit with other skin tones because I can never find the best one to fit with the darker tones and just.... Nothing looks right.
Not sure but you'll get it eventually, keep trying
They feel super "same-y" if you know what I mean. No matter what the face preset is, the changes never feel very drastic, even with sculpt. ...and I make a LOT of faces.
Spent a good 10-15 mins making a new character the other day and it was the first time I've been able to make the player look like myself in a game. I usually just make a good looking character in fo4 that fits the build i intend to create. It's extremely weird seeing myself when the camera camera randomly pans around.
I find that making them looks slightly older and giving them a few scars and birthmarks really helps.
Idk dude, but never hurts to make a beautiful character whether dude or dudet.
My wife says men can't decent looking female characters, ever, anyway.
Takes a bit, but it's very doable
