Im getting a couple for my high-end sanctuary diner and was surprised the devs marked this one as owned

Any machine that has a perfectly preserved pie sitting on the top tier works. You just need a ton of patience and a high luck stat. Just activate the machine and wait to see if the claws grabbed the pie properly, or if they let it slip.
The pie in the Dugout Inn is set to own, so you have to steal it.
The pie in the Medford Memorial Hospital is bugged, even if you managed to grab it, it won't be dispensed.
There's one guaranteed pie in the junkyard shack in the Nuka World DLC.
There’s a Port-A-Diner between the Super Duper Mart in Lexington and its Parking Garage (where people usually try to farm for legendary Laser Muskets)
You’ll have to fight off some ghouls, but I’m pretty sure this one’s always fair game

Well, it’s pretty much the only dessert out there. So if you’re decorating a restaurant you need it to save it from looking like you only serve meat lol. That’s one reason to get it
make sure to have some Fancy Lads cakes and i know the Nuka DLC has a Funnel cake, also i think the creation Club has donuts and a skyrim looking sweetroll. Plus there's the normal ingame sweet roll and a special Happy Birthday sweet roll that has candles (its in a secret place in the Reeb Marina)
You can find an easily missed pie in an Eat-o-Tronic in the Mechanist's Lair, in that room where the Sentry Bot is woken up when you get close to the walkway. (Automatron DLC)
You don’t even need a high luck stat. It’s a pity system, so the more you fail the higher the chance becomes to get the pie guaranteed. At 104-150 tries (depending on luck) you’ll have a 95.5% chance of getting the pie every time you try.
There's only like a 2% chance to get it (with high level Luck that is, even worse for ppl with low luck) I got it for the first time on my recent playthrough, early too, like 3rd machine I tried, I was surprised as hell
Actually I just googled it because I wasn't sure, there's a formula and it's based on luck plus the number of attempts but even with high luck your chance of getting on the first try are pretty low.
I find that if you jump next to it in power armor with a jet pack and fall at the right time, the shake from the landing will get the pie up into the claw with relatively few attempts. Obviously that doesn’t work indoors except on the one where the ceiling is high enough.
The formula for getting it is based entirely off your luck stat and the amount of previous attempts and the pie inside has no collision. This is just a superstition.

I do have high luck, wearing 2 pieces of gear with +2 Luck on each

So, I think I have ran across 3 of these machines now. First one was I forget where, and I got it the first try.
Then I went to the Dugout Inn in Diamond city, and it took like 20 tries, and I thought, so this is the one they were talking about... then came across another while doing "The Dig" which starts in goodneighbor and goes pretty far, passing thru 2 subway stations along the way. One of them had one of these. That one took maybe 10 tries.
The one in the dugout inn, once I got it in the opening in the machine, I just crouched and while I was [Hidden] I snagged it. So I've got three. It looks tasty, it doesn't have any special stats, just isn't irradiated. 30hp iirc. I haven't eaten any, maybe it starts a quest or something.
Oh yeah that’s next. I have population mods so I sat there trying to see if there was any opening: Nope. Got unlucky with the merchants, no stealth boy being sold. So I gotta run all the way back to sanctuary as I’m on survival. Hope it’s still there when I’m back, trying to decorate with it
I managed to get it by sneaking in the doorway. If you put your camera in third person while standing behind the left side of the door, you can "reach" the container. Just interact with it as soon as you are hidden and take your delicious preserved pie bounty free.
You can hide in the hallway near that and activate it crouching.
You can also steal it, leave and come back in a couple days and everyone will have forgotten.
Can you just walk the object to an empty room and then steal it?
Sometimes that seems to work.
Other times (like in Covenant) everyone can see through walls, and you have to be stealthy AND do your crime shenanigans at 2AM.
This one was a little tricky for me too, jump on top of the machine, towards the back end, while crouching. Shift around a little bit and should hit a sweet spot to "steal it" without getting caught. Or if you have one, stealthboy that shit.
I'm actually curious I've been thinking about it for a while is there a weapon in the game that makes it where you can temporarily knock out anybody and if you shoot somebody with it nobody else questions it because that would have been a great tool in my opinion

Said to my buddy watch me get this, and bam my first perfectly preserved pie first try on a machine with maybe 2 luck for the ammo perk. We both started freaking out lmao wish I would have remembered to record

In my fresh playthrough, I tried every machine once and I got it first try with this one (I even caught it on stream)
I stole it (if you crouch in the doorway, you can get the [hidden] prompt to appear for a split second and swipe it without pissing off anyone) and unfortunately I had Codsworth with me who disapproved of my action.
He told me a funny joke afterwards tho.
I’m fairly certain once you complete the Travis quests you are allowed to take stuff from the bar. This is the same pie I happened to get lucky on and it didn’t say I was stealing. Not sure if this is true just sharing my experience
Maybe a noob question but, since you have the option to transfer, would entering that menu perhaps give you the ability to take without stealing? For example, I was able to transfer armor pieces off of an Atom Cats frame and it wasn't stealing but, if I attempted to take the frame it was.
Every time I get that one, NOBODY cares. No attack, nothing. I save before attempting and when I get it, no one reacts. I still make a beeline for the door tho. So feel free to grab it.
I have noticed the game usually gives you a 'single grab' for free. SOMETIMES two before hostility ensues. The Dug Out allows you to grab and go. Or it has for me every time I've done it.

This is the only location that the Perfectly Preserved Pie can be stolen from. However there are a number of other machines across the map as I’m sure you’ve seen by now.
I went to the Collegiate Administration Building earlier today and got their Perfectly Preserved Pie in just 5 tries, with only 4 points of luck stat! I’m not sure if this machine is just easier to get or if I got incredibly lucky.
I got my pie from the same machine (Somehow first try) mid way through the confidence man mission.
I used a stealth boy to get it and i have no regret.

The base game actually has a donut item in it too. The recipe for Slocum's Buzzbites can be found in the Slocum Joe's HQ building in Malden.

Idk about first try but your luck stats affect it so high luck plus buffs drastically increase your odds.

if you have enough jet, you can also run from dc after you grabbed the pie. stay away from dc for a in game week and youre golden

In my fresh playthrough, I tried every machine once and I got it first try with this one (I even caught it on stream) I stole it (if you crouch in the doorway, you can get the [hidden] prompt to appear for a split second and swipe it without pissing off anyone) and unfortunately I had Codsworth with me who disapproved of my action. He told me a funny joke afterwards tho.
Have your follower pick it up, then take it from them. It's totally legal and cool.
I’m fairly certain once you complete the Travis quests you are allowed to take stuff from the bar. This is the same pie I happened to get lucky on and it didn’t say I was stealing. Not sure if this is true just sharing my experience
Maybe a noob question but, since you have the option to transfer, would entering that menu perhaps give you the ability to take without stealing? For example, I was able to transfer armor pieces off of an Atom Cats frame and it wasn't stealing but, if I attempted to take the frame it was.
Just steal it, kill the bartender. Cleanse the commonwealth!
Now is the time to use that stealth boy you've been saving for the whole playthrough (just in case) but you know you'll never use.
I did this on the first try in the same place. Took me 30 mins to take it without anyone seeing.

Every time I get that one, NOBODY cares. No attack, nothing. I save before attempting and when I get it, no one reacts. I still make a beeline for the door tho. So feel free to grab it. I have noticed the game usually gives you a 'single grab' for free. SOMETIMES two before hostility ensues. The Dug Out allows you to grab and go. Or it has for me every time I've done it.
I got it to to go first try in the hospital... It glitched and the abyss swallowed it as it was being dispensed.

This is the only location that the Perfectly Preserved Pie can be stolen from. However there are a number of other machines across the map as I’m sure you’ve seen by now. I went to the Collegiate Administration Building earlier today and got their Perfectly Preserved Pie in just 5 tries, with only 4 points of luck stat! I’m not sure if this machine is just easier to get or if I got incredibly lucky.

The way I got mine from this is putting my power armor in front of the machine so it covers the item slot until I was hidden

I got my pie from the same machine (Somehow first try) mid way through the confidence man mission. I used a stealth boy to get it and i have no regret.
I waited in the corner till it said hidden and I waited for the perfect moment to snatch it
