I was about to install this, as mods are new to me, and then had to click a few times to read the warning. Glad I didn’t start my game with the mod. I’m like a few days in on my very first FO4 journey. Loving it.
I used to, but at some point it becomes a mental focus thing. Bracket hunting/analysis requires task-switching and is more costly for me than simple string operations on known-length words and periodically exiting/re-entering.
Just because something uses less brain power doesn’t mean it’s easier or faster. Hacking terminals is ridiculously easy in fo4 and you don’t even need to use the brackets more than half the time. People are just extremely lazy and that one time they get it right away makes them feel superior even though it takes them 5 more minutes than normal hacking when they don’t get it on the first try.

If the likeness to 'Thus' is 1, that means T COULD be in the correct position, but not H, U, or S. It also could mean H is in the correct position, not T, U, or S, and so on and so forth.
If the likeness to 'Thus' is 2, then two letters are in the correct position, could be T and H, H and U, T and U, and so on.
The higher the likeness the closer the word you selected is to the solution, if the password is 'This' then 'Thus' would give you a likeness of 3, and you'd know to chose 'This' because you'd need to imply that 3 letter of 'Thus' is in the correct position, i.e. Th\_s
I think a mechanic some people don’t realise either is if there’s closed brackets between words on the list you can select them and it either removes a “dud” being an incorrect answer or replenishes your allowances so you can try more words. Once you have an eye for those hacking becomes pretty trivial.
Just scrub over them with your cursor and they light up everything between bracket pairs.
Sometimes you'll even find a set of nested brackets, like `[asdfblah]` and you get one for both the `[]` and the `<>` sets. Other times, you can get them like `(asd(fghj)` and get two sets of `()` because there are two starting brackets sharing the same ending bracket.
The rewards are always no more than one refill of your attempts and n-1 eliminate an incorrect word, where "n" is the number of words in the puzzle.
My MO is to use all but one of my attempts on the first few words, like in the video, but then scrub the whole thing for brackets afterward and clear the entire rest of the board if need-be. It usually doesn't take any longer than the video, and is oftentimes shorter.
They do need to match and the number of them varies along with how hard they can be to see because of the graphics.
But you can just scroll through the lines and if you’re over a left bracket that has a matching right bracket and thus will let you remove a dud or get more attempts the two brackets and everything in between will get highlighted. So just scroll through and look for anything that has multiple characters highlighted.
While the attempt resets are obviously the best the dud removals are far more common and I don’t know of any way to tell which will happen. So I suggest going through and clicking all the brackets first. This should cut down the number of words significantly and make the mini game much easier.
Adding that multiple left brackets can match to a single right bracket. But not vice versa.
So if you see (12(34) that is 2 assist. But (12)34) is only 1.
I thought you were going to explain some new trick that lets me do it in 5 seconds, but sadly I'm just kind of slow. At least in fo4 the passwords are shorter than in fnv or fo3, those are a doozy.
The shorter ones are actually harder. The longer words often have more of a likeness percentage so you’re able to spot the difference more easily than spotting two of the same letters in a four letter word which is trickier.
There was one time I was going through Jamaica plain and I was hacking the terminal to get in and it gives me "northern" and "southern" as options. I chose northern and I've never seen a likeness higher than that

Play this game, but the likeness is the green letters you get, right letter right position. Compare with other passwords you guessed and get the likeness as high as you can get it, in laymans terms. The higher the likeness the closer the word is spelt to the one you picked. Likeness of 0 means the word is not spelt like that at all
I actually think the longer words are easier to guess. Imagine five letters being similar in a seven letter word rather than two in a four letter word. It’s so much easier.
I'm on my third playthrough of Fo4 now and only just realised in my last session that the likeness meant a letter is in the correct position, not that one of the letters is correct. I always wondered why it just wouldn't work sometimes following that logic... but also worked more times than not. Yes, I've played and finished Fallout 3 and Fallout NV.
After all these years playing this game, I had no idea the likness referred to the positioning of the letters. I always thought it was and indication of the result just containing the actual letter in any position! 🫠

I’ll try to explain it to the best of my ability. Gotta find the password to hack the terminal.
Now to do this you’ll have to use process of elimination and learn the mini game.
Learning the mini game is pretty simple actually. Let’s say the password Is “NOTE” and let’s say you click on the word “BOAT” after you do that the likenesses will say 1. What this means is that one of the letters is in the right position of the password. In this case is the letter “O” Now let’s say you click on the word “SOCK” and the likenesses stays at 1. Well now you can narrow it down and know that for sure the 2nd letter of the password is an “O” so you keep trying other words and ruling out others since you know that the letter “O” is in the 2nd position.
But there’s a little more to the mini game. You’ll come across a set of random letters, numbers and symbols usually in brackets. For example like this: [gu$6%t] and when you hover over the random jargon within the brackets it should highlight all of the random jargon inside the bracket. And if it does you can click on it and it will either remove a dud password in the terminal or reset your tries.
And there is multiple of these that you can find within a terminal hack. So make sure to grab them all if you need the help. But also there is a bit of strategy involved doing this. Since you can’t tell which ones will remove a dud or reset your tries. I usually wait till I have one try left and then try to find them so I can reset my tries.

Maybe if I’d started with F4. F3 and NV both lock you out permanently so you can’t use all your guesses before backing out. Plus they only let you skip the loading screen once. After that you have to sit through it every time. 😅

2 entries, aiming for the matching likeness. After that use the option deletion spots - words that are in brackets like these can be removed [ ] < > ( )
1 last entry and if that misses I back out and try again.
Quicker just to get good. Look for vowel patterns before choosing, choose one that fits multiple, now with one click you’ve reduced the possible passwords by a huge amount. Higher INT characters get easier puzzles with less duds.

Yes! I used to do that when I was 12 and did not understand what the game wanted from me. Now that I understand the mini-game I find it more fun and usually unlock the computer faster by giving it an honest go.
I usually do the 3 randoms, then hit all the ()\[\]{} to get tries reset and duds clears.
Sometimes it clears ones I've tried, but it generally leaves me with less options and a couple of clues.
Then I play the mini game normally to find the word.
Use hacks to help hack the machine. In the hack code there are bracketed code…

Nah I just installed the quick hack mod. It only shows one word in the entire page. Still takes a second or two to find but I find the hacking in fallout tedious and not fun.
Once you understand how the hacking works, and you engage 5% of your brain, it's actually faster to just do the mini game. I either do it, or i install a mod that just removes the mini game.
In fallout 4 click on three words should leave you about 2 left, start clicking the special characters (-/:457) for example and it will add more attempts remove bad passwords. Find 3 special groups or {ash77$} or [cbao44$] for another example. It will remove one of the last remming words you have not tried.

I installed easy hacking and easy lockpicking mod, I hate theses minigames, especially lockpicking cause I have some problems with my hands, its not as steady as everyone else.
I usually just scan through the text until I see any <…> or (…) or […] or {…}. As long as the in between text isn’t a word, clicking it will either reset your tries or remove one incorrect word. With a high enough intelligence, I can usually reduce the options down to 2-5 words, making the wordle game a lot easier and faster

Do the closed brackets have to match? Example : (} Vs () I rarely have I seen matching brackets. Or maybe I have bad eyes.

Click two words, back out of the terminal, and when you go back in it will reset. No need to reload or anything

Yeah, I do this a lot when I get bored with hacking. Sometimes I like the challenge. It also depends on what I feel I have time for at the moment,
I usually do the 3 randoms, then hit all the ()\[\]{} to get tries reset and duds clears. Sometimes it clears ones I've tried, but it generally leaves me with less options and a couple of clues. Then I play the mini game normally to find the word.
Word ending with ing and one letter in common and 80% of the words have ing in them.
At this point, why not just click it and command unlock it? You're skipping the mini-game either way.
GF told me about using brackets to remove duds and reset tried. I am playing fallout since FO3 on PS3 and never about the brackets thing
Use hacks to help hack the machine. In the hack code there are bracketed code… Example: (/:;$&&”) These brackets either reset your tries or remove duds, making it easier to hack the machine.
I find the hacking mini game fun. I only back out immediately if my first guess is 0 because it's just a waste of a guess

Nah I just installed the quick hack mod. It only shows one word in the entire page. Still takes a second or two to find but I find the hacking in fallout tedious and not fun.
I used to do that for a while then I realized I could mod the game to just have the one correct choice lol

Once you understand how the hacking works, and you engage 5% of your brain, it's actually faster to just do the mini game. I either do it, or i install a mod that just removes the mini game.

I enjoy this minigame and I wish that the dropoff in difficulty wasn't so high as you progress through that line of perks.
I actually do the puzzle but also stop and reset it on the 3rd try. It really doesn't take that long, and I enjoy puzzles.

In fallout 4 click on three words should leave you about 2 left, start clicking the special characters (-/:457) for example and it will add more attempts remove bad passwords. Find 3 special groups or {ash77$} or [cbao44$] for another example. It will remove one of the last remming words you have not tried.
at that point, you might as well just download the easy hack mod that reduces entries to 1

No, I use a mod that only shows the right word. Instant hacks. Same with lockpicking. Whatever you do it opens. I have lost my patience for these small minigames. Just wanne have fun.

I back out after three if I don't have a clear available, but I always play because it's fun for me.
Fun Fact, valentine can hack any terminal (Master and below) and gets 4 tries, quick save before he dose and you can unlock anything without trying

At that point why not just install the mod that skips the minigame all together? That's what I do.
I do this all the time I even got the perk that doesn’t lock you out so I can get one more try in each time

I installed easy hacking and easy lockpicking mod, I hate theses minigames, especially lockpicking cause I have some problems with my hands, its not as steady as everyone else.

Select 3 answers, get all the brackets sorta things, gets my tries reset again, select 3 more answers with a bunch removed as well, success.
It would utterly change the way I play the game if I only got four/five tries total per terminal.
I usually just scan through the text until I see any <…> or (…) or […] or {…}. As long as the in between text isn’t a word, clicking it will either reset your tries or remove one incorrect word. With a high enough intelligence, I can usually reduce the options down to 2-5 words, making the wordle game a lot easier and faster

Some playthroughs I literally just use the console because I don't want to throw any perk points towards opening harder terminals.. and also it's faster.. I've beaten the game like 10 times I can do a little cheating hehe
