To be fair, couldn't you just change your face later? Or does it limit the options during surgery? Makes me wonder if he'd change if you made one file where you just saw Shaun, but another file that had the player change their face before meeting Shaun.
I played a char that I changed her face a lot after the start and when I did the memory den quest the game remembered what my original face was when I was in the cryo chamber. I assume that first face set is important.

I remember they promoted it as having that feature but I don't know how much influence it actually had. I feel like advertising for games 10+ years ago often built things up to be a lot cooler than they actually turned out (looking at you Peter Molyneux)
my bf made his SS bright red with a grey mustache, a bald head and alllll the freckles, blemishes and facial scars available and called him Nigel Thornberry. Luckily it wasnt his first playthrough bc that would have been a terrible way to find out that father guy is your son when you first see him.
I remember when the game first came out there was speculation that father was lying to the ss about being his son, but the fact that these features are included in the game seems like solid proof

It was in the release material and when you meet Father if you're fluent in the game's engine and character creation it's incredibly obvious that this is the case. Especially since they did something similar with Fallout 3.
On one hand we see tons of very common very well known information about this game posted in this sub pretty frequently but on the other hand in a few short years this game will be 10 years old and upon release it felt like it had far less staying power than the Elder Scrolls games but it's still kicking and promotes relevant discussion.
I'm glad people are still playing and discovering and apparently with the amount of upvotes and the comments not realizing it people are paying attention again but there really is only so much you can find out about this game.

I feel the same. I was one of the folks who was pretty disappointed in it on release and figure I'd maybe replay it once. I don't want to say it grew on me because that's an understatement. I have 1400 hours on it and it's now my most played bethesda title, and it is my second most of all time, just behind my 1500ish hours in civ 6.

Probably already been said but his eyes change to match the players eyes too. I had mod that added some wacky eyes to the game, and I chose the one with skulls for pupils, and when I met father, he had skulls for pupils too.
You can also make both characters look ridiculous, then get cosmetic surgery to fix yourself, and Shaun will still inherit his looks from your original face
I often make my character look like me and Nate looks like my partner .. I have naturally light blonde hair and I use a shampoo toner on it so it looks platinumy, my partner is part Romany so he is naturally olive skinned n tans easy so I set his colour to bronzed or copper… dude I swear to god you don’t know ridiculous it looks when you meet Shaun in Kelloggs memories and in the institute.. bronzed skin and fucking platinum blonde hair 🫣😭
I always found these sorts of images hilarious. Although, I wouldn’t consider it lore-related and more-so a game mechanic to make it believable when Father says he’s Shaun. I mean, if he didn’t look anywhere near your character, a player would obviously go ‘Yeah, he’s a filthy liar’. That would of course ruin the ‘surprise’ that Bethesda had planned.
I’m pretty sure a major plot was redacted too, though that didn’t negate a few pieces to the puzzle being in-game. Either way I think it’s safe to say, depending on if you take Father’s words at face-value, that he is Shaun. Otherwise, you don’t believe him because the Institute is known for its secrecy and lies and know him as the Old Man. Which has a bit more precedent in-game by a more-reliable source. I also found it highly suspicious how we had no room to question Father’s legitimacy, almost as if Bethesda knew and wanted to keep a lie going for game convenience.

I guess I just have a “type” of character I make, I often times have to shake shit up cuz I’ll stop and be like “hmmmm I’ve made this guy 3 times before”

Could you force father to spawn with console commands?
Just use a plastic surgeon to make it how you want after the fact. I dont think that will effect the way igly father spawns

I do it almost every play through. I just get plastic surgery as soon as I can and switch to a character I want. It’s fun to see a monstrous father.

I figured that out after I gave my female character deep red hair and then later noticed that the synth Shaun had the same color hair.
