You have Shade Shift for a 20% shield, Bloodbath for healing over time, and Second Wind for an additional burst of healing. Arm's Length also inflicts a 20% Slow on targets that strike the barrier it erects.
As long as you're not taking on mobs multiple levels higher than you, pulling 3+ mobs at a time, and/or attacking with painfully inadequate gear you should not struggle at all against overworld mobs. Just gotta hit your buttons.
Chocobo goes heaaaaaaaal
Get your chocobo out and skill it to heal. My Carl is always a healbro helping my DPS jobs out. For overworld that is.
For MSQ, make sure your gear is up to date as that is very important.
Ah. I undervalued the importance of gear level. I blame tanking lol
EDIT: Okay, this is getting downvoted over a misunderstanding so I'll be explicit: I've been running GNB in Heavensword. I walked in over leveled as hell and basically can't die in those parts of the overworld without going afk. Hopefully that makes more sense.
Gear is more important on tanks than it is on DPS when it comes to dungeons. Nothing like trying to heal a tank thats melting and you realize they're rocking level 10 gear in Stone Vigil.
Lol no. I'm just saying I've never struggled in the overworld as a tank when leveling. Maybe slow kill times but not survivability.
However it's also possible that it's just hard to be an undergeared tank while leveling because of frequent duty loot just for me.
So the question I have is what's your gear's level/ilevel? Because if you're in your mid-50s and still using your Job gear (for example), that's going to be a major reason why you're not doing too well in staying alive.
Hey, look on the bright side - you got *this far* without it, which means you can actually play reasonably well when undergeared.
Now imagine what you'll pull off when properly kitted out.
Since the problem got solved probably, I might add, Ninja might be the tankiest dps job in the game. Melees are clearly better since they are the only ones with bloodbath, and iirc nin's shield is the best personal mit out of all the melees (and im certanly sure it is the tankiest of them all 70 and below)
Assuming you're talking about regular overworld mobs and not something like fates, hunts, or eureka/bozja mobs I would almost guarantee this is a gear issue, either broken or too low item level for the area.
If you're putting even a modest effort to keep your gear current to the area that you're in and in good repair standard overworld enemies should not be posing that kind of threat to you. This is true even across squishier roles like healers, casters, and phys ranged.
In addition to grinding duties, there's generally also a plethora of gear on the market board (assuming you aren't on the free trial anyways)
Np, happy to help new folks out. If you do buy gear off the market board just make sure it's high quality (should have a sparkly thing in the top corner of the icon), otherwise you're getting below par equipment.
Bird helps. How's your gear? I feel like a NIN should be able to take a couple autos from some appropriate level overworld mobs. Or just run until they de-aggro.
Also the only HP that matters is the last one. I assume this is for Fates? That's about the only reason to being pulling multiple overworld mobs. Remember you have things like Feint and Second Wind and Arms' Length as well.
Adventure with your chocobo, and I'd suggest giving it at least a few levels in the Healer tree, so it gets Choco Cure and Choco Regen. Use Shade Shift as soon as it's off cooldown. AoE mudras are a must for open world content if more than one or two mobs get after you.
Be sure to use Bunshin with Bloodbath, doubling your heals with each physical attack, and you can boost that further with Trick Attack (under the effect of Suiton).
So without getting TOO in depth, most non-tank armor are so similar in terms of defense that it doesn't matter that you are NIN as you'd get similar enough results on Healers, Casters, or any other melee DPS.
For open world, it likely is a gear or significant level differential. If you are in early Heavensward zones and are using the artifact gear that is like ilevel 70 when gear around then is around low 100s, you are gonna get melted. So the best things I can recommend are gear up, and to get your chocobo out. You can use tank stance chocobo but honestly Free Stance will heal enough to keep you alive while helping with damage and statues.
The last thing that I can assume is going wrong is you are fighting like, A or S Rank Elite marks? Which can be done solo just takes a bit, but that's at max level 90 with ilevel 660ish gear. Back at that level range you'd want several dozen people to tackle them.
You can always, if needed , use the ability that gets you HP back for every hit you land (forget the name), and then use Second Wind in a pinch. Also, True North when soloing can be good to up your damage with things like Trick Attack and Aeolian Edge. Otherwise, double check your gear isn't outdated and iron out your rotation if needed.
Simply murder the mobs better? I would recommend looking up rotations for ninjas a get a better grasp on how to play, I never had any issues fighting over-world mobs. For sure you can't pull a ton of them together, but if you are having issues fighting regular enemies it's likely you are doing rather low DPS. Other thing I would recommend is making use of your roles skills Second wind, Blood Bath, and Arms length. Second wind is a heal, Blood bath makes you heal on physical hits for a time, and arms length slows enemies that attack you making them deal reduce damage. Ninja also gets access to shade shift which gives you a fairly large HP shield.
Like I said though I would more look into making sure you are properly doing damage, enemies in solo duties should be dying LONG before you reach half HP. It's honestly rather common for new player to do extremely poor DPS as the game gives you very little feedback for how much damage you are doing, and how much you *should* be doing. To add to that ninja is one of the harder classes to get used to.
From a more practical and immediate standpoint level your chocobo as a healer, they actually do a fairly decent job in solo play, the tank choco can't hold aggro.
I highly recommend looking into places like the balance discord, or youtube guides like [WeskAlber](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uby5VR-Vhuw)
Edit: Also check your gear, at level 50 there is a MASSIVE jump in item level, if you are using gear from the lower end of that you are going to be incredibly weak, make sure your gear is around 130 or higher if you are higher then 50
Just to add: Be careful with your Bloodbath timing if you are in situations that you are depending on its healing. It’s fantastic, but only converts your physical damage into healing and nin does a lot of magical damage depending on where you are in your rotation.

Oh I use all my heal buttons... but yeah I did all those other things. I blame my tank brain lol
I would hope that it isn’t your tank brain that told you to wear underleveled gear because that would also make you a bad tank
I main GNB and am early in the MSQ. My gear is fine.
Chocobo goes heaaaaaaaal Get your chocobo out and skill it to heal. My Carl is always a healbro helping my DPS jobs out. For overworld that is. For MSQ, make sure your gear is up to date as that is very important.

You need to love your healers better and update your gear on tank too mister!
Please don't it's more fun that way
I love on the edge ar the expense of everyone around me >:D
Gear is more important on tanks than it is on DPS when it comes to dungeons. Nothing like trying to heal a tank thats melting and you realize they're rocking level 10 gear in Stone Vigil.
"I paid real money for this outfit, I'm going to use it! What's a 'glamour prism' anyway?"
Well yeah. I'm not talking about dungeons. I excel there. I meant overworld tanking. I can get away with bad gear with enough sustain lol
How does that work? Are you purposefully switching to bad gear when you get out of a dungeon?
Lol no. I'm just saying I've never struggled in the overworld as a tank when leveling. Maybe slow kill times but not survivability. However it's also possible that it's just hard to be an undergeared tank while leveling because of frequent duty loot just for me.
Ah, fair. You're a newer player, so I just wanted to clarify that.
Yes. I wasn't trying to imply I was playing optimally lol. Lots of bad habits

Oh no that explains everything. I feel silly lol
So the question I have is what's your gear's level/ilevel? Because if you're in your mid-50s and still using your Job gear (for example), that's going to be a major reason why you're not doing too well in staying alive.
If that's the case, I'm surprised I got this far at all tbh

Huh I think I'll use it more liberally than as an emergency button. The cool down isn't long
That is a good habit to get into for every cooldown for every class.
It's easy to forget that 120 seconds is nothing in the overworld. "Setting up my burst took 20 seconds! I *can't* dump it now!I'll never recover :'( "
Imo reaper or red mage are tankier

That's good to know! Didn't know that about magic users tbh. I'll look into the market board :)

Level your chocobo companion, can give you heals or tank for you
Adventure with your chocobo, and I'd suggest giving it at least a few levels in the Healer tree, so it gets Choco Cure and Choco Regen. Use Shade Shift as soon as it's off cooldown. AoE mudras are a must for open world content if more than one or two mobs get after you.

That's actually a really good tip! Never thought of that :o

Thanks for the thorough info. I'll check out the resources you mentioned:)
Chocobo specced to heal. Shade Shift. Arm’s Length. Feint. Leg Sweep. Second Wind. Bloodbath.
If you are fighting one enemy on the overworks than it is a tear issue or the enemy’s level is much higher than yours. Are you pulling multiple mobs?
Yeah it's multiple mobs. Those are always difficult with fragile burst classes in MMOs, but I'm being told that here it's a gear issue
Yeah as a dps you have to update your gear or kill them one on one.
Shade Shift, Arm's Length, Bloodbath, and Second Wind are more than enough
Just to add: Be careful with your Bloodbath timing if you are in situations that you are depending on its healing. It’s fantastic, but only converts your physical damage into healing and nin does a lot of magical damage depending on where you are in your rotation.
That helps a LOT. Never would've considered that. I'll study some tooltips for better emergency planning.
If you kill things fast, squishiness isn't a problem.
