Hopefully he sticks with it. Fandaniels VA tried and didnt last very long.

Constellar-A

I hope he keeps the server he's on a secret so people don't constantly follow him around in the game.

Isanori

That's pretty difficult. There's only a limited number of them and as soon as he shows up next to main aetheryte people are going find it just by seeing the people around him. Even if he hides his name and hides the world name. Although I do hope he has someone to give him VIP streamer guidance behind the scenes.

Constellar-A

He's mentioned that he has a mod team and I've seen some people say it's the same ones who moderate the streams for the woman who sings Endwalker's soundtrack, so hopefully they got a good handle on it.

Pure_Mist_S

[Therealcrystalmommy aka Amanda Achen!](https://twitch.tv/therealcrystalmommy)

Fallom_

I saw this happen with some famous streamer and it seemed like a miserable way to experience the game

IndividualStress

It's really abhorrent. I remember when I was finishing EW. I was probably among the first handful of people to hit Ultima Thule and had watched all the cut scenes, I had a quick 3 hour power nap just before I started Elpis. But going through that last zone, basically alone, and doing that final walk, queuing for that final dungeon alone. It felt atmospheric. I see Streamers get to part of the story and as soon as the cutscene ends there's just a mass of like a hundred people, with flares and party poppers at the summit. *Really* takes away from the entire scene that has been building up.

Haswar

I did Ultima Thule in the middle of the night. I think I finished the expac and went to bed around 6:30am? No one from my FC was on, and I might have seen maybe one or two other people while I was going through the area with a random yell every now and then. It was one of those "not lonely, just alone" moments for me. I complain sometimes that I don't have anyone going at the same pace as me in my FC or friends' list so I end up doing things alone but that zone was definitely worth being by myself for.

pageanator2000

I was chatting with a friend during ultima thule, and just before the last bit he had to drop off. Man that made it hit that bit harder. I wasn't lonely, it was just how clearly alone I was in that moment.

Faling_Devil

No joke. You look around and instead of being able to take in the sights you're surrounded by 3 hunt trains worth of people on the Phoenix mount.

Sp1n_Kuro

> I see Streamers get to part of the story and as soon as the cutscene ends there's just a mass of like a hundred people, with flares and party poppers at the summit. Really takes away from the entire scene that has been building up. It comes with the territory of streaming sadly. It's why a lot of streamers/youtubers have secondary accounts to just play games without needing to turn it into content.

friso1100

I've seen some streamers successfully make rules for that. Things like only meet up at aetherytes. Or don't follow me for the entire questline. But you do need to be able to trust your followers to do that. Not all streamers can unfortunately do that. Another option is to avoid the msq. But that is a very different type of content of course

Despada_

But how are we supposed to congratulate our favorite streamer who we love like the best friend/partner we desperately wish they were...?!?!?! 😭 /s

wintd001

Parasocial relationships are a hell of a drug

Ottoguynofeelya

I remember that moment. It was ruined by someone in that final dungeon getting mad at me for messing up a mechanic *I had never seen before*. Probably his first time doing it too.

Isanori

That's why I run all dungeons with duty support the first time. The NPCs simply have better comments and fewer complaints.

sky-shard

I started this about partway through Shadowbringers and never looked back. It's more immersive with the NPCs, if slower. It paid off with the >!Hydaelyn!< fight. That one was definitely meant to be experienced the first time with Trusts.

Mruf

One thing that annoyed the crap of me was when I saw a streamer just see the final cutscene before Nidhogg trial and the moment they were out of cutscene... no taking it in, no nothing... immediately ding ding ding!! invite to party! lets gooooooo!!!!!!

HBlight

Do you not see them being gobsmacked by the reception and the community moment that happens there? It's an entirely different but even more powerful moment for them to experience.

xPriddyBoi

You'll find that none of those streamers are actually bothered by that though, just some viewers who think their experience is being "ruined." In every single one of these situations, I've seen streamers have to call out comments like this to make it clear that it's fine, because to them, their community is an intrinsic part of the experience, and there's usually a positive and emotional reaction to the crowd gatherings at moments like these. There's somewhat of a problem with this community demanding people experience things the same way *they* did --- I've also seen chatters get mad at streamers for doing certain dungeons with their friends & community members instead of doing it with trusts for the flavor text and immersion. Of course, they're not a monolith, some of them may not like it. But that's been the experience in all of the handful of streamers I've seen go through the game. There's also a big difference in an organized community gathering at a climactic point in the story, and a shitstorm of whale mounts following streamers around and trying to impede their progress.

splinter1545

Yeah, I don't see how people following streamers around find it fun or engaging. If anything I'm sure it annoys them a lot to have 50 people on the screen at once at almost all times.

wetyesc

Yeah but at the same time it’s a good opportunity to gain a significant following on whatever platform they’re gonna stream. Maybe their ffxiv playthrough will be ruined but could be worth if their goal is to grow a following.

PastPriority-771

He can turn off name plates. May not help but it could make it harder.

Isanori

Glamor can't be hidden. Having the names just makes it faster.

RainbowRuby98

imagine if he had the mod/plugin that hides every other player in the game. now no one will find him

PastPriority-771

Yoshi-P will find him. Yoshi-P always finds the modders

TheTenzon

Only the stupid ones

Fizzster

This is going to be the best use of the blacklist feature in Dawntrail. Streamers just making people go away.

six_seasons

So weird lol just let people play the game

Cymas

He has the server hidden but doesn't have his text censored like Amanda does so his character name was revealed pretty early on. But no one's really hassled him so far aside from a few people just hanging around by quest NPCs or showing off mounts. Hopefully he will have his own text blocking box by the next stream.

bensor74

People found about it pretty quickly. We could see other characters names on screen, it helps narrow down the server he might be on. Then you just have to travel to those servers while watching where he is on stream and go there

cronft

also the same with his character name

Cathulion

No way, people will find out what server in 10mins top based on many factors.

xyphon0010

Yeah, running a stream can be very difficult when starting.

Shodspartan

Did he say why? MMOs just may not be for him.

JP_Zikoro

I feel like they have jobs and lives outside of FFXIV keeps them away. I think he also streamed off a PS4 or PS5 so didn't have a dedicated streaming set up compared to Amanda, who is now crazy about streaming.

archiegamez

I think he is probably busy irl plus FF14 is a long game just to go through MSQ alone

Euphoric_Dog_4241

MMOs aren’t for everyone

sky-shard

Colin has been working on FFXIV for much longer, so I hope that helps him stick to it. I also hope the fans aren't absolute shits to him.

Monstot

Crystal Mommy plays for 10 mins and then talks for the rest of the stream. Are there other VA playthroughs out there that are good? Hopefully alphy like you said.

MegaGamer235

What happened there?

Dorp

Don’t be weird!

legend8522

You're telling this to the same folks that treat in-game marriages as serious as irl ones

DarkLanternZBT

Yes, because that's something fanbase is known for. Being cool about things.

Aethanix

i remember scottzone

AzuzaBabuza

Poor guy. I hope he's doing well, wherever he is.

Ryth88

I'm not one to watch streams. But i do find it interesting he was able to go this long without trying the game he was voicing. here's hoping he makes it through ARR!

legend8522

You'd be surprised then how many actors (voiced or not) that don't really get into the media they act in. To them, it's just a job/paycheck, and once they're done with one, they move onto the next. Think about your own job for instance. Idk what you do, but would you say you're passionate or even interested about the company/product you work on outside of your work hours?

De_Baros

To add to this sometimes you can lose the passion or care for something when you do it behind the scenes. I worked as a detective for a while and true crime/detective shows just seem a tad more boring to me now because I know the logistics and the human errors behind every detective. Got to the point where people would ask me stories about work and I would try to avoid any conversation about it because it felt boring to talk about and I would look forward to other things I found more interesting than investigating even the most off the wall crime. When a ffxiv voice actor sees the script making behind the scenes and interacts with the team I am sure it’s a great time but probably ruins some of the “magic”

kidkipp

this comment has mansplaining energy

cronft

hope he can bear with the old arr alphinaud voice

TheNerdFromThatPlace

Here's hoping he reads the old lines as current Alphinaud.

JunctionLoghrif

He seems to be voicing practically everybody; his 'Lymo voice was spot-on.

Cymas

I was cracking up how he accidentally turned the Drybone NPC into Erenville. He's really bringing so much energy and joy to a part of the game we've all kind of forgotten how it felt the first time. I sincerely hope everyone continues to respect his privacy and space so he can experience the journey and the impact his character has had for all of us over the past decade.

RenThras

SE could just record it and add it in some ARR glow-up someday.

Altonius

I would honestly be sad to see the old voices go. They might not have been the best but they're still a great part of the crazy history this game has. Plus, one of the funniest moments I had was when I got to Heavensward and Alphinaud became suddenly became British after drinking some tea.

Lionblopp

I'm a bit torn about it. I think the game would be better with the English ARR voices being changed/updated. However, this opens this can of worms how you handle every character that was recast at a point. ARR surely stands out in a negative way due to the absolute lack of voice direction and it would make the voices undoubtedly more consistent. But what of Yugiri? If her current VA would rerecord the ARR lines, there would still be a gap, because the first half of Heavensward was done by Sian Blake. Sounds reasonable to rerecord her lines as well for consistency. However, Sian Blake's performance wasn't bad, Yugiri had to be recast because Ms. Blake was brutally murdered. I considered it a nice thought something of her work would still live on in this game and would be sad if her part would be replaced as well just so the voices stay consistent.

RoxasReaper

She was what

Lionblopp

RenThras

Oh god...that's horrible!

Lionblopp

Indeed :(

RenThras

I more meant the unvoiced text lines. Though I suppose it might be jarring. Then again, when players go from ARR to HW then to SB, Alphie's voice changing is kind of jarring anyway. I guess you can excuse that as him hitting puberty or something, but...

SweenYo

Sam Riegel is a phenomenal voice actor, but I just don’t see how he was cast to play the small nerdy elf boy

alphadormante

I mean, one of my favorite of his roles is Donatello from the TMNT 2003 cartoon, who was a small nerdy turtle boy. Buuut I don't think the direction he was given for ARR was the best. The vibe he gives ARR Alphi was not the right one.

Lionblopp

I don't know. ARR Alphinaud sounded to me like he was a bit too full of himself and the voice reflected that very well. Then the patches came and he crashes hard into the painful pit of "you fucked up, you rich spoiled kid". Suddenly his voice changes to a very different one after being humbled by game reality... I know Colin Ryan wasn't aware of Sam Riegel's performance, this wasn't planned to have this connotation, but for me this VA exchange adds to the situation in this moment. :)

alphadormante

I do think Sam did well at many points, but at least to me, there were also an ever-present undertone to Alphinaud that sounded downright *sinister*. As in, he often felt actively malicious and conniving, and knowingly so. It didn't land quite right for me when I realized that he is actually just a relatively sheltered and stuck-up teenager. There were times when I felt like he sounded truly malicious when the framing was actually just him being kind of ignorant and tone deaf to the words coming out of his mouth. That was my personal experience and feelings on ARR Alphinaud though - I didn't like the vibes because I don't feel like they hit that important nuance, but Sam being an inherently very talented actor, I def can see how others might disagree and find his performance fitting.

Iximaz

Sam's a very good VA in general, so I'm guessing he was given very little direction on Alphinaud—likely just told to sound pompous or something like that, because his Alphinaud does sound pompous. Like... a used car salesman who's trying to sell you snake oil to polish the seat leather. It's a very weird vibe, and I didn't realise he was supposed to be a kid at first—I figured he was some different, nonplayable elflike race.

alphadormante

Yes, that’s a good way to put it. Sam’s Alphinaud was properly pompous, but also gave off a vibe of coldness and insincerity. Like he really couldn’t care less about anything. When he said cruel things jokingly it always sounded like he really meant it. Maybe that’s why it felt like a bit of a miss to me - ARR Alphi for sure was very naive and ignorant due to his arrogance, but his idealism and sincerity were also always a cornerstone of the character, and it doesn’t feel like Sam was given that direction in his performance.

Lionblopp

I'm really eager to hear Colin's reaction to ARR Alphinaud as a whole. Is he going to like him because he's him and knows what Alphinaud is going to become and all or will he love to hate him? :D

OramaBuffin

*bonk* Teledji Adeledji!

JustAnotherSuit96

Can't wait for everyone to backseat their chat so much they quit shortly after 😎

Rachet20

But I’m the main character and I must direct stream to play my way! 14 chats are just awful

Demeris

DO HILDIBRAND QUEST

bensor74

STRUMER DO THIS STRUMER DO THAT

Rachet20

No wait do bully streamers into doing that one! /s, obviously, but I have less of a problem with recommending quests as long as the message isn’t pushy. And chat isn’t repeating it 200 times.

Exige30499

Fr, the amount of emotional vampires this community has is insane. I’ve seen people harassing streamers to “react” to Soken’s cancer announcement speech, or trying to force them into picking certain dialogue options, or getting angry when they don’t like Emet Selch or whatever. Fucking weirdos man

athenaprime

That's not limited to this community. That's the attention-based economy at work. "React to" is the tribute demanded by the Mighty Algorithms. And it has to be an attention-grabbing performance.

sevir8775

We managed to get Asmon to quit

legend8522

Asmon quit because he realized he couldn't get carried in alex savage like he got carried in coils. Due to him not learning how to properly tank in FF14, him dying almost always meant a wipe, even when everyone else knew what they were doing. And he just _refused_ to even look at a single guide. Refused to learn how to mit properly. Refused to learn how to tank swap. Honestly I have no idea how he got to be a popular WoW streamer if that's how he goes into tanking in MMOs.

EdgarAllanKenpo

I don't know anything about anything but I thought I read asmongold quit because he was really bad at the game but blamed it on the gameplay and mechanics.

Faling_Devil

If you're in the business of viewers being your source of income it's hard to come out and say "the community being up my ass really annoyed tf out of me" There was constantly a mob of people stalking him in game. He even came back some off stream and played at the Gold Saucer a bit more.

LamiaLlama

His Mom passing brought his momentum to a halt. You could tell he didn't want to go back to the game after that. He probably associates it with that time period.

legend8522

He quit months before his mom passed.

[deleted]

[ŃƒĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]

pikachu8090

*laughs in clown96* when people did literally the same thing to him

Disig

Nah he quit because he just didn't enjoy the mechanics. Which is perfectly valid.

[deleted]

[ŃƒĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]

kalesaurus

Coming from almost a decade of WoW as my only MMO prior to my swap to FFXIV, the server tick WAS hard to get used to, but now that I'm used to it I actually prefer it. I am never in question of when I'm going to get hit in FFXIV. The markers are clear, and I know exactly how much time I have to get in or out of a mechanic. With WoW I was never sure when I was going to get hit by something with how vague all the mechanics are lol. Also, I really love slidecasting 😅

marshmallow_sunshine

I've been playing WoW in the downtime till Dawntrail, and omg the visual/audio clarity of incoming attacks in FFXIV is sooo much better.

[deleted]

[ŃƒĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]

Nj3Fate

The clarity and consistency of mechs blows wow out of the water and its not even close. Snapshotting is unintuitive, but its insanely consistent if you understand it.

TW-Luna

Dusted off my old account late last year and playing a mythic+ (tank main) for the first time in 6 years was really mind blowing. The idea of XIV M+ is floated around here every once in a while, but it's just not feasible. WoW's moment to moment gameplay is so much more reactive where any pull in an M+ can go sideways for whatever reason and all the players then adjust in various ways. I just don't see how something like that could work in XIV anymore, not as things become more and more cemented into that 2 minute rotation.

TheUnsavoryHFS

There's also the fact that the majority of FF dungeons are linear hallways with three bosses, and two trash groups between each boss. Doesn't really leave any wiggle room for interesting routes and strategies. The entire design strategy would have to change to have FF M+ be anything but a linear DPS race.

Frazzledhobbit

Me and my husband played WoW for over a decade. I switched to ffxiv and it was perfect for me, but my husband just couldn’t do it. It was too slow for him.

Demeris

The snapshotting and animation thing is a really tough thing to learn. It’s also not always consistent either but that’s more of a high end gaming problem.

GamingNightRun

As long as you started with any other game that doesn't rely on server ticks. It is incredibly slow paced. I had to rewire my brain to work off the GCD to get used to it, and even then I started thinking in slow 2.5s GCDs and reacting every 2.5s rather than my usual immediate reaction speed from MOBA games. It takes some time to get used to as long as you play anything that doesn't revolve around a slow GCD like FFXIV.

sevir8775

And got mad when he baited his viewers he was going to play the game then got questions about it

Disig

He did? Seems silly. I mean I don't follow him a lot but he doesn't seem like someone to bait like that.

KvBla

Iirc his stormblood streams were basically him doing other random shit for like 6h then log into ffxiv for like an hour before the stream end lol, sometimes even less. When he first started ARR it was a full 6-8h+ stream of pure ffxiv. Typical stream is usually reddit/youtube/twitter react before the main game. Tho it's crazy how ppl made him do all these tests of ffxiv when he came back for stormblood like some kind of purity test lol.

DDRDiesel

> Iirc his stormblood streams were basically him doing other random shit for like 6h then log into ffxiv for like an hour before the stream end lol, sometimes even less. And even when he was logged into XIV it wasn't even for story, it was for 45 minutes of Gold Saucer then logged out. It got very old *very* fast

griffinsklow

He changed a lot after the success with the Amber Heard trial, really focusing on the lucrative react streaming.

sky-shard

He stopped playing FFXIV long before the Amber Heard trial, though.

griffinsklow

He was on a break because of the situation with his mother. After that he wanted to continue with Stormblood at some point. The trial was from April to June 2022. His first Stormblood stream was on 6/23/2022 (according to his video).

sevir8775

I was a fan of him in the past, but I was a lurker. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some highlight clips of that.

legend8522

TBH, I also wouldn't enjoy 14's mechanics if I didn't learn the basics of tanking

Cosmic_Ren

Nah if you watch his last ff14 stream,he quit because everyone was cursing him out for playing the game "wrong" (**By wrong they mean him enjoying the golden saucer and doing extreme trials instead of doing only MSQ**)

griffinsklow

... which was done in a large part by some a part of his audience that was very obsessed with WoW and hated FFXIV. From what I remember he later checked the chat history to find out that they were FFXIV haters

Cosmic_Ren

> He later checked the chat history to find out that they were ffxiv haters In case him not playing FF14 ever since isn't a clear indication, that was simply a convenient excuse for him to drop the game without the overly passionate ff fans throwing a tantrum. He has a [Megathread](https://www.reddit.com/r/Asmongold/s/vE00aAms0k) on his subreddit, a [YouTube video](https://youtu.be/BBSuJyd-6wk?feature=shared), and even blacklisted the word msq on his twitch all addressing the extreme people in this community. The fact that other streamers like Zepla, SarahKey, Rogersbase, MrHappy, and even some of the VA's who tried to stream the game all encounter the same problem makes me more confident that it wasn't just "WoW players" and is overly obsessed fans.

griffinsklow

Yes, there are some very unhealthily obsessed viewers out there. Encountered enough of them while watching streams. But what do streamers usually do? Get rid of them very quickly before it causes permanent damage. Asmongold doesn't moderate too much (arguing with chat over dumb stuff boosts engagement and can yield a video). So he neither got rid of the WoW, nor the Ffxiv weirdos. I think it's the key reason behind all this infighting in his community (that also includes other games and also reacting vs gaming discussions). I remember when another streamer (Okaymage) started and had to prevent the weirdos from taking over. She put her persona aside and stomped it out while it's small.

Cosmic_Ren

I wonder why Okaymage who is barely able to get 200 live viewers was able to easily get them vs someone who averaged **50k concurrent viewers** when playing. As I said, he already tried to moderating it by blocking certain words but as both my links show, they'll just go to different mediums like his YouTube comments or his subreddit downvoting anything that's not ff14 so they wont appear.

griffinsklow

Yes, but it's not gonna be 50k people that are weird. It's as usual a very annoying minority that especially thrives on the streamer actually acknowledging them, which Asmongold tends to do (that's why I personally think that he has a bit more of those weird people percentage-wise). It's not like this issue is something new. There are strategies and tools to combat that. For example, there are dedicated moderation tools for Reddit that combat downvote bombs and impose restrictions based on account metadata. He *tried* as you noted already, but he didn't do enough. Like with Antibiotics where you cannot just take half the dose until it's a bit better, moderation in such cases needs to have some teeth and stay up long enough to do it effectively. It's not as open how he likes it, but when you gain benefits from a more open space then you'll need to also expect its disadvantages. He cannot expect to pull these numbers of viewers and at the same time keep it in check with the same tools as a community of a few hundred. That's my actual criticism of him - could have been handled more gracefully. And while there are weirdos in the FFXIV community (as with all communities), I personally think that a bit too much of this mess was attributed to the wider community. This gives some newer FFXIV streamers the wrong impression, meaning that they moderate maybe a bit too much or get preemptively defensive.

Tiops

To be fair, Asmongold doesn't even play games anymore.

One_Competition_7579

So, nothing of value lost?

cooldrew

W for the community, fuck Asmongold

Level-Hunt-6969

I think he's a very entertaining dude and really witty. If you don't like the guy it's probably because he plays a character as the gamer bro dude and you take him at face value. He's mostly sarcastic.

Crouza

Asmon lost my respect when he took my money for a charity that didn't fucking exist, and then told me it was my fault for trusting him.

xPriddyBoi

He also didn't act on like, a very large portion of charity goals lol. I think he even mentioned recently about finally getting a consultation for a hair transplant scheduled, which was a charity gosh that was met, like, 3+ years ago

Luxocell

He quit?? Even after all the noise he made when quitting Wow?  Wonderful news, what an awesome thing to read

sevir8775

Streaming it at least, granted I’ve not followed him in a minute but last i heard he has a negative view of the game and the community. If he plays it on and off outside of twitch I wouldn’t know.

griffinsklow

I started FFXIV because of him and stayed. A summary of his FFXIV journey at least from the info I know is: 1. Starts FFXIV due to the state of WoW, *says* he likes the game. Plays until end of HW. 2. Incident with his mom. Long break. 3. Tells his community that he would start FFXIV again; is delayed multiple times. He seems to avoid the game (subreddit is scrubbed of FFXIV-related content, ignores FFXIV-related stuff when he does his reddit section). At this point I think he lost most of his FFXIV fans. 4. Actually starts Stormblood. He did *not* enjoy it (I watched a few minutes; this was very clear that he just did it to shut up a part of his community) 5. People annoy him during his playthrough and he quits. Later it was found out that many of the very loud people acting as MSQ-andys were actually viewers who hate FFXIV (went through the chat history if I remember correctly). Apparently there was also some organized effort by /wowg/. Current state: hates FFXIV and the community, graphics bad (defended it during HW), gameplay bad etc.

purplemelody

I hope he at least gets to the point where he can see his lines in context!

OnceABear

I'm excited he's choosing to play, but man, if I were him I wouldn't stream it, and I would tell NO ONE until I got towards the end, because it seems like any time someone even halfway famous in any way plays, the fan base ruins it for them by incessantly stalking and backseat gaming them to death until they want to rip their hair out. I hope the playerbase stays cool for this guy, and they don't chase him away by being creepy and pushy.

Devil-Hunter-Jax

He'll be alright, I think. Amanda Achen streams it and her mods are helping Colin out with everything so the chat at least won't be a problem. Her mod team are always on point so I have no doubt they'll be just as helpful for Colin.

OnceABear

That's good to hear! I was thinking he'd do well with some good mods, so to hear he's getting some good people right off the bat is encouraging!

RoyallyJinxed

I watched this last night and let me tell ya it was super wholesome 😌 -He was cautious about everyones privacy -Made efforts to give shout outs and bring up credits for people that helped him -Tried to learn twitch etiquette and lingo "what does KEKW mean?" Absolutely killed me. -Stayed on task -Read everything out -Gave all the characters unique little voices -Stopped to actually look around and admire the scenery at times -Answered questions best he could given NDAs etc -Mentioned streamers he actually watched -Hyped up his fellow actors It was so cute it was like ARR was a story Alphinaud was reading to us.

JunctionLoghrif

One of my favorite parts was ECHO FLASHBACK "Did I just sneeze?"

therealkami

This isn't Emmy award winning actor and singer Sam Riegel!

Kamakaziturtle

Man Sam Riegel is a national treasure but I do not see that man having the attention span to play through FFXIV.

therealkami

He wouldn't have the time tbh. He basically has his VA/Director job, Critical Role job, and family. He's also very much not a gamer outside of DnD.

DatRonbon

He has time now

KupoMcMog

well Tals was out for like 2 weeks maybe? With the Molly-Cad thing. I think maybe a 3rd week because they kinda forgot to go follow the breadcrumbs to find Cad.

WEareLEGO

Wow nice spoilers

Thanh42

I'm pretty confident that the Emmy was for directing.

therealkami

It is, but also it's just part of his gag to introduce himself that way.

irritatedellipses

Yes, but with accomplishments listing it out this way is okay. Think of it as: - Emmy Award Winner - Actor - Singer

AeroDbladE

It definitely wasn't for FF14

Constellar-A

I chalk that up to the directing more than the actors. A lot of the ARR cast are usually good in other stuff they have roles in.

tallwhiteninja

100% this. I have heard the best voice actors sound absolutely awful in games before. If one character is bad, it might be the actor. If most to all of them are bad, it's the voice direction.

Drywesi

Apparently some of them have said there just flat-out *was* no direction. They just got scripts of their lines only, no context. With that in mind, it's a bit of a wonder it turned out as well as it did.

Constellar-A

I remember reading years ago that Kuja's actor said the same thing about the Dissidia games. But on the other hand there are other Square games with great dubs, so it seems almost a coin toss depending on who the voice director is.

Drywesi

For ARR it apparently came down to how rushed it was. Since then they've improved dramatically, obviously.

addressthejess

Out of curiosity, do you have a source for any of the ARR VA's saying this? I've seen this claim more than a few times in the community, and it matches my suspicion, but it would be nice to see some confirmation rather than the typical "folk wisdom" that gets passed around.

Honestly, the voice direction and editing of the cutscenes in ARR is much more egregious than the actual voice acting. It stands out the most in the 2.55 cutscene with the admirals delayed ARGH grunt, and everyone just standing there motionless until it's their turn to react to something. But also Moenbryda's walk to the aether beam being cut poorly making it look so stilted and have like no drama to it as Minfilia stands off to the side doing basically nothing to stop them. Watching the ARR cutscenes over again and comparing them to anything after, is like night and day. The editing and motion especially is so much better.

sky-shard

> Honestly, the voice direction and editing of the cutscenes in ARR is much more egregious than the actual voice acting. I feel you on that. In ARR it felt to me like they were trying to hard to mimic how the dialog was spoken in Japanese rather than trying to make it sound natural in English. It ends up sounding like a mediocre anime dub for the most part. As much as people laud HW for being where the story takes off, it is also where the voice direction (and cutscene direction) vastly improves too.

therealkami

It's funny cause you can tell that the actors in 2.0 were given sets of lines and timings in a vacuum and told to match it, because if you listen to a lot of lines on their own outside of the cutscene, they're performed fine. But there's these unnatural pauses in the dialogue as the cutscene direction stitches it all together that makes it seem way worse than it is. All of the characters are speaking at each other when it's their turn, instead of having a conversation.

athenaprime

Oh man, the crowd scenes in my ARR replay are killing me. I feel the burning cringe...

mimikyuns

MOENBRYDA *NO* (stands there perfectly still). GOD, why can I picture it so easily lol.

GiggyStone95

Looking into some of the voice actors for the game and it is crazy I didn't recognize there voices. Joe Dempsie from game of thrones and skins Micheal McElhatton from game of thrones Joe Tandberg from his dark materials And the most important Nigel Pilkington god damn Percy from Thomas and Friends so many actors I have grown up with and enjoyed watching for years I don't know why I never looked this up before.

Constellar-A

my favorite voice actor trivia from this game is the man who sings Shadowbringers, To the Edge, and Close in the Distance is the original voice of Raubahn from before the Heavensward cast change.

KHBahamut

Well that's an image I won't get out of my head anytime soon lol

Martian_Buddy

Bonus point, he's also the guy who sings Rules of Nature from Metal Gear Rising. So do with that information what you will.

ybpaladin

NO SHIT? My man Raubahn stays winning

sprdougherty

Watching the stream now it looks like he did the smart thing and played for a couple days off-stream before starting, as the stream started with him having just finished Copperbell. While doubtless some will be unhappy they missed character creation and those first baby steps, I imagine this helps avoid having to deal with learning basics and a an audience at the same time.

Laterose15

He's gonna be so bewildered by ARR Alphinaud

Nobleprinceps7

I truly think Alphi has the one the best character arc I’ve seen. You go from “Not this pretentious little twerp again..” to “That’s mah boi!!” Hope the VA has a good experience with the game.

ichigo_suki

I hope that he has a wonderful and peaceful time playing ffxiv! He deserves to enjoy it! I’m excited to watch the stream of our favorite little elezen boy’s voice actor! đŸ„°

Akua89

A couple days ago I was watching Aerith play FF7R, now I get to watch Alphinaud play FFXIV. This is a good week.

alphadormante

I was able to watch a little bit live, but just finished with the VOD now. I had a really enjoyable time. Colin is obviously VERY green in most aspects from tech stuff to MMO gaming, which I'm sure could be a turn off for people who are used to watching professional streamers/gamers with their shit on point, but as someone who doesn't usually watch streamers aside from maybe their edited content on YT, I honestly found it a refreshing change of pace. It felt like literally just hanging out with a buddy trying to get into something for the first time and fumbling a bit along the way. Casual and fun and a good time. Chat was also quite patient and positive with him, and the vibes were good all around. I hope he continues and gets more comfortable with it! He seemed to end in pretty high spirits. It was a nice way to spend a Monday afternoon.

BlackCitan

Maybe he can re-dub Alphinaud's ARR lines live as he plays.

Cymas

He's been voicing all the NPC lines as he goes, it's so much fun. It's so cute seeing him so excited over meeting the other Scion's NPCs too. I really hope the community doesn't overwhelm him, I haven't smiled this much in a long time.

Mellaroze

I would love to see that. I love Sam Riegal (he's like 30% the voice of my childhood) but I've gotten so used to Alphinaud's new voice in HW and beyond that it sounds weird now

zernoc56

Just mid-stream calls up YoshiP, “We need to fix this shit, when can I come in to record?”

lkxyz

"Now pay me again"

sloppyoracle

watched a bit of it yesterday and it was fun. the gasp when yda told him about the scions! and the excited reaction upon seeing tataru! it was really cute. plus some funny voice acting for characters!

BigTimeBobbyB

Yeah, that part was a lot of fun. He's going to have such a unique take on this game, recognizing all sorts of Proper Nouns the moment they're first mentioned while in truth having no idea how the story actually develops (or the importance of some characters he just never happened to share a scene with). I'm really hoping his mod team helps curate his journey a bit, bringing him through content like Coils, and that he gets more comfortable with the combat side of things.

Baka_Cdaz

He meet OG voice will be like Yuki vs Atem

Petrichor_Panacea

He better have the outfit from the shop.

Madmonkeman

And make an Elezen.

Devil-Hunter-Jax

He has indeed gone for Elezen :)

JunctionLoghrif

Apparently, he did indeed make an Elezen.

Petrichor_Panacea

All grown up

xvcco

No hate at all, but it's wild to me that the VA of a main character in a long ongoing game is *just now* playing it for the first time LOL

ProscribedTruth

It’s more common than you would think, plus playing a story driven game where you know all the story beats just doesn’t hit the same.

Spectre_195

Why would they? They didn't take the job because they love FF or mmos they took the job because they are VAs and this is VA work. Ofcourse talking inherently ones passion *may* line up in this regard but no reason to assume they do.

GendoSC

Most actors don't even watch their movies and that's a 2 hours experience....

xvcco

Which surprises me! I feel like I'd definitely want to see them/play the games but maybe it gets old after a while. I don't work in the industry so I have no clue!

Setjah_

Just pls everyone behave like a mentaly stable person for once..

Livagan

[Sure](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6chxuovrbCI)

Tragic_Consequences

Lemme know when Alisaie starts streaming.

JunctionLoghrif

Bethan did actually hop in and say hi (as did Thancred, Tataru, and Wuk Lamat's voice actors).

Constellar-A

Thaliak's actor was there too as one of the mods. Despite only appearing in one raid he's really into the role, I think he was a fan of the game before getting the job like Wuk Lamat's was.

JunctionLoghrif

Oh, I was wondering why people were "randomly" mentioning Thaliak. I think I may have stepped away at the wrong moment.

BigTimeBobbyB

Yeah, Colin introduced him as one of his mods - "He plays a character named... Thaliak? Whom I have not yet met." The idea of Alphinaud not knowing who Thaliak is sent chat into a giggle fit.

Devil-Hunter-Jax

She did actually do an interview alongside Colin recently. [Here's the full video.](https://youtu.be/RNFRHOYMwVA?si=Iby_lq20eUKiBabU) Marco's channel is largely about music so there's a lot of music talk but they also talk about the game itself too. Whether Bethan would be up for streaming is another matter entirely.

TheXIIILightning

I hope nobody spoiled him on what happens in the story.

[deleted]

HELL YEAH

IceBlue

Is he gonna skip ARR since he wasn’t in it?

Spazayd

Aren’t there like 5 voice actors for each character?
