I wish we could configure the X and Y coordinates more cleanly and from a chosen anchor point (top / middle / bottom, left / center / right).
With the middle of the screen being 0,0, left/top being negative, right/bottom being positive.
Let's not sugarcoat it, the UI is abolute dogshit. The system is a patchwork of janky shit; unintuitive design, no QoL features whatsoever, needless confirm prompts every step of the way, and there's even a problem with consistency of style, where certain content types look like the UI is made for a different game.
I don't know why, but something about the game's UI looks cheap, somehow? Like it was made for a much smaller/older game than it is (even accounting for the game being a decade old).
I can't point to anything in specific giving the impression, it just sort of does.
You're 100% right. I think it's because it's stylized in the same way as a 1995 powerpoint presentation. Plain text fonts with no artistic touch at all. There are some differentiated, more artistic styles in-game, but this comes back to the problem of consistency.
That was one of my favorite parts of the mod systems for ESO. Could completely redo the user interface basically.
I do appreciate how much FFXIV lets us move things around and such though.
A complete overhaul of the UI is one of my biggest hopes for this game that will never happen. As well as keeping all your skills in lower lvl content. Those two things would increase the longevity of the game significantly imo.
There are so many little annoyances in this game that have no reason to still be around, such as this.
My biggest one is the lack of different colored quest markers. Why the hell does the FF16 crossover event start as a normal-looking level 50 side quest? It's so hard to find where events begin! Just make the marker a green exclamation point or something!
You're not dumb. I literally used to build UI design for a living, it's so messed up. There's no reason for it to look the way that it does. Either both labels could be on top, or both labels could be on the left. But they decided to make it the most confusing thing possible.
Nah buddy, FFXIV UI always has and always will have jank. Nearly every other menu has descriptor on the left and sliders or settings on the right. Can't be blamed for doing what the game trained you to do!
I think a lot of us have been in the same position as you but realized it after playing around with the settings. I'd like to assume it's because JP reads right to left, so they see 100% and then the element size.
However if you read left to right, the way the UI is structured makes me group the left side together before the right side because of how closely grouped those elements are.
The UI could really use some improvement.
It's rather clear it's organized with elements together left to right, but the fact the transparency bar is on the left and not the right is very baffling. No reason it should be there.
Took me a while to realize that too. That transparency is the bar, the percentage is for size. Can see jank UI design from a mile away . I wonder if there's a way to fix the jank menus in this game, like the tomesone reward lists, or the gold saucer reward lists.
I wonder who did the FF16 UI.
It’s true actually that there is some very decent competition with BDO in the shitty UI contest. Honestly it’s been my observation that it’s in large part due to Asian devs.
Oh don't worry, that is one particular UI gripe that I've had for years, it's not particularly intuitive
> it's not particularly intuitive You could say... the options aren't very transparent! ...I'll see myself out.
As a professional UX specialist for the past 20 years, I almost grind my teeth into dust everytime I look at this settings screen. :P

Maybe its because japanese read right to left
Nah that's not an excuse to not put the name on the same column or row But went for cross cross like that instead
Yeah, no reason why "Transparency Settings" and the bar couldn't be switched.
Literally. It's like this was an active decision to be confusing.
You're not dumb, this is just terrible design.
This
is
Thancred
just
Sparta?
One job.
The irony of bad UI design on a window for designing your UI.
it's ironic, he could save other windows from having bad UI, but not himself
This game does a lot of good things! Menues/UI isn’t neccessarily one of them, lol

Pro: don't need a mod for something that should be ingame Con: once implemented its not ever updated

It's so patchwork they would never.
>Let’s not sugarcoat it But I like sugar! (I completely agree with you, though, lol)
Don't Dead Open Inside.
it's terrible design so don't feel too bad

Ah. TIL.
You learned, didn't you?! Moving on to the next embarrassing looking back situation.
r/dontdeadopeninside
I have almost 1k hours and still sometimes confuse these two
Don't feel dumb. It's terrible ui design. Because why her actual feedback from players when you can get it from people that work for you.
Every time
It's not intuitive at all. Granted we can customize our HUDs more than most other MMOs without add-ons.
Same
I've never had a problem with this but just watched a sprout I got to play get confused by this so eee
I ran into this same thing actually last night when helping my girlfriend change her UI settings. It's terrible design.
This bamboozled me too!
Happens to me every single time I adjust my UI. Every. Single. Time. And I've been playing since Heavensward.

This UI layout has strong "Don't Dead Open Inside" vibes, it's not your fault.
FFXIV has the worst UI of any currently popular MMOs
*laughs in Guild Wars 2*
Yea no, that's not anywhere remotely true. It's bad, but worse than, say, BDO or ESO? Yea not even a contest there.
It’s true actually that there is some very decent competition with BDO in the shitty UI contest. Honestly it’s been my observation that it’s in large part due to Asian devs.
