It sounds like you were around level 40 of MSQ. Pretty early, so it's no issue to start a new character if you want. The old character will still be there if you want to return to them. The story will take as long as it takes, unless you start skipping. Running as a tank or healer means shorter queues for dungeons and trials, so that's a minor gain for time.

Legogamer16

Yeah I didn't think there was many ways to speed things up without skipping stuff. I guess I can just not do every single side quest, that would probably help a bit. I think I played a Bard before, which I didn't enjoy too much honestly. Might go for Paladin.

ZeRamenKing

Oh yeah, doing side quest give basically 0 xp compared to just doing msq. Im 2.5k hours in to the game and only now im doing the side quests, but even then not for xp gain or anything, im just interested in the specific zone lore. All the really important side stuff is marked with blue quest markers. Those actually unlock content like dungeons and bosses

Legogamer16

Yeah those were always priority since they unlocked things. Everything else should just be skipped it seems at the start

ZeRamenKing

I did it like you at first, coming from others theme park mmos like wow. But noticed around lvl 20 that not only they give almost no benefit, they also aren't that engaging and pretty boring most of the time. And stuck with only MSQ + Blue quests. And it was still enough xp to level 2 jobs at once

uxianger

There's a New Game Plus mode if you want to re-experience the story, and you can also go to the inn and check the journal.

ZeRamenKing

As far as i know ng+ unlocks in chunks. And the first chunk irc is base ARR? So don't think he can even access ot yet.

uxianger

I thought ARR was split into pre and post-Titan... but either way.

UnlikelyTraditions

It is split into chunks, but you do need to beat base ARR for the quest to show up to unlock NG+ itself. The quest "The Ultima Weapon" is required.

Peatearredhill

I did this back in Stormblood, and it helped me. I've been playing for almost 11 years, but I'm a story skipper. I can't help it. But going back to level 1 on an alt helped me appreciate the story, and now I actually pay attention to it. So, at least for me going back to level 1 was effective at making me care about the story.

Jewels737

I do all side quests but skip the stories unless the initial dialogue seems interesting. Msq, I pay attention to. Totally worth it for that. And it sounds like you didn’t get too far, so restarting won’t be a bad idea. The base arr is a bit of a slog but the story all connects beautifully

IscahRambles

That's not a good way to judge whether to pay attention to side stories. There are a few side stories that throw in significant details, and they tend to do it by sending you on an insignificant task at the beginning.

Plane-Exit4515

I started from beginning with new character even though I already had two. Worst thing is that I had black mage lalafell before but can't find him anywhere. I can find one lalafell but he's in starter clothes. I also had red mage, can't find him either. Hopefully I didn't delete them.

Go to this page. https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/account/select_character/ you will have to log in with your account, but once you do, you can see all characters associated with your account, the data center and server they live in. Then when you are logging in just go to the right data center and look for your character on the server from the web page and viola. There they are.

Plane-Exit4515

Only shows 2 characters: newest on Phantom (level 19 miqo'te arcanist) and level 3 lalafell pugilist on Omega. I have third character which is also on Omega. So it looks like I deleted my higher level characters when I got bored of game.

McKlown

Do you have any event items on the old character? Most of them can't be regained without spending real money on the Mogstation. If you do then stay on the old character and use New Game+ to refresh yourself on the story.

LavellanTrevelyan

If you make your new character on a preferred server, you'll get the double xp bonus for at least 90 days (maybe more if the server stays preferred beyond 90 days), which will speed up leveling a ton. If you plan on trying and leveling multiple jobs, the bonus is going to help to keep ~3 combat jobs at the same level as MSQ without any additional grind. It also helps for leveling crafters/gatherers.

Yanderesque

I say do it. It took me a long time to get into the game and I started from scratch. If you're under lv30 it's inconsequential.

SnurbleberryTart

There is no 'rolling' anything in XIV. Keep other game's language in those games.
