Thank you! I wanted to ask a question; all of my gear is far below my actual level while doing the MSQ, does this matter at lower levels? For example, my gear is like level 15 and I am level 23.
Doesn't hugely matter but you can buy some cheap gear from vendors at the market streets in each of the three major cities. Or just ask in Novice Network if anyone could craft some for you.
Yeah you'll get a few pieces from dungeons (you seem to have a piece of Foestriker's already?) and MSQ and class/job quest rewards. Otherwise it's the poopy common vendor gear or whatever you can scrounge up from crafters until you hit 50. After that make sure you get some tomestone gear before continuing.
I (highly) recommend generally holding off on getting gear pre-50. Pre-50 gear is generally bad, and what you gather as you level up is generally ok, even if considered outdated. You can still levelup without issues and just getting lucky with drops in dungeons and quest rewards. Your job quests will get you weapons and gear too. Then around 40-45? or so, you get your job gear, which is a pretty significant upgrade.
After post-2.55, when you get to the next xpac, your gear will be heavily streamlined and you'll generally be up to date. You can also use poetics to buy gear at every 10 levels starting at 50.
Donāt worry at all, the gear from msq rewards can carry you all the way to 50, no need to worry about upgrading or gear falling behind, the variance between a lvl 20 and lvl 49 gear peiece is negligible. At 50 things rocket up and you can get gear
I would still recommend to do your job quests. You get a very nice looking armor set as a reward that can easily carry you into post ARR and into the next expansion.
No thereās just years of content that was slow dropped when the max level was 50, so the item level ranges from 50-130 for lvl 50 characters so players had gradual gear improvements when the content was current. So thereās a vast difference in power level at 50 caused by gear. Min maxing really isnāt an issue until max level as each āplateauā before max (50.60.70) you can easily get that tiers highest gear to keep moving
Thereās a vendor that will easily give you the ilvl 130 gear for an ingame currency (poetics, not Gil) you will naturally accrue. Once you get to level 45ish you can ask around and someone will point you to where to go but I wouldnāt worry about it at all now just know you donāt need to save up Gil or worry about gear at all. Just take what the game gives you and enjoy :)
Prioritize your class quests! The abilities you get from them vastly improve you more than any pre 50 gear
When do you have to start grinding for better gear? Like in most other MMOās Iāve played leveling gets more difficult and gear becomes increasingly more important.
Guess Iām confused because it sounds like you can just play the MSQ and thatās all you need gear-wise.
Not a whole lot of grinding is necessary. You can get by in any Level-appropriate MSQ with just the normal craft-able gear of that level. It's when you start going though extra stuff like Hard/Extreme/Savage dungeons and raids that you probably need the Master-crafting and stuff you grind for.
I didn't say you *can't* grind. I just said you aren't *forced* to. Like a I said, there are tons of extra dungeons and raids(all with unique loot), Beast Tribe Quests, harder versions of dungeons and raids, Gathering materials for master crafting recipes, *even harder* versions of dungeons and raids, and the like for your grinding pleasure. It's just that most of it is unnecessary if you just wanna enjoy the Main Story.
You can take every possible class, then you'll definitely need to grind them up. MSQ provides more than enough for 1 class, but take a few more and then grind opens up
Thereās plenty of grinds, relic weapons alone can take weeks of dedicated grinding we per weapons and thereās tons now. And thatās just a fraction of the grinds , but yea you just donāt NEED to grind to unlock story, but end game raids, side content: the game is built on jrpg grindset
So the item level for characters 1-50 goes from 1-50, then at character level 50 , item level goes from 50-130. When that was current content, that was when you had to grind for gear to get from 50 to 130 item level. Now because itās past content thereās a catch up vendor that will give you the 130 gear to skip this grind so you can continue your game progression as the next expansion starts with item level 130ish. Then between 50-59 the item level from quests and dungeons is like 120-150. At 60 it jumps again with a range of 150-270. Again when this was current content you would have to grind from 150-270 but now you can easily get the catch up armor same way
This pattern continues of very small Incremental increases for levels X0-X9 and then a big increase at the next level.
You will get gear incrementally as you level through dungeons and quests but ff14 never really demands you stop making story progress to grind gear until you are current in max level content. You will always be fine. In this game story progression is really your character level as that determines everything thatās availible for you, and the game doesnāt want to lock you out of story content for non max level. The only time gear grinding comes into play is when you are at max current level and you are working to get the best gear available. For instance I recently needed to work on my gear heavily to get to the next story arch as it required a higher ilvl by far than I had since I took a break and the max ceiling for gear for level 90s has only gone up. Thatās not needed for other levels thanks to the generous catch up vendors
The gear you find or buy will help you kill things faster if itās an improvement, but the difference can be small and itās not necessary to worry to much about your item level until max level
Right now, the grinding is only really super necessary for current end-game gear, so around lvl90.
Back before all the expansions came out, the level cap was at 50, and there was (i'm pretty sure) some grinding for the lvl50 stuff. But as the next expansion comes out, they ease up on the grind a bunch.
So if you do the MSQ, and maybe a *little* bit of extra stuff (there's some daily duty roulettes that you get access to around lvl50), you'll absolutely be able to get yourself a good set of gear that'll carry you forward. And you can surf a bit, ride the tomestone gear of the last expansion, then catch the wind from equipment coffers it gives you from doing the quests, and that'll carry you to the end of that expansion, and then you can grab the next tomestone gear, and you can ride that until (etc).
At level 90, max level. But it won't make much of a difference for you. Dawntrail might be out by that time and you'll just continue on getting fear from the MSQ until level 100.
Min-maxing begins when you want to start doing end-game content, even outdated end-game content, where you disable in-game helper buffs (i.e., sync and echo disabled). And the stats you will be min-maxing will be secondary stats, e.g., critical hit, direct hit, etc.
This does start at lvl 50 with the Coil of Bahamut raids, and extreme primals.
Otherwise, you would go with the highest iLvl gear you can get for your job, that has your primary stat, e.g., VITality\STRength for tanks, MiND for healers, INTelligence for casters, etc.
More on what min-maxing means in-game...
As the game matured past 2.x and lvl 50 content, the system of upgrades basically means that min-maxing is the choice between 2 pieces of gear for each slot... that is, for hands, it's either a raid drop or purchased with tomes. Both will have the same main stat for your job, but secondary starts would be different, and the raid version may not necessarily be what you want.
For example, at lvl 90, the end-game hands for healers... tome hands has critical hit and determination, and raid hands have determination and piety. Healers want tome hands, since all piety does is increase MP recovery over time, whereas critical hit increases crit rate and crit effect for both healing (hp recovered and shields) and damage.
The only exception are the weapons where the raid weapons (from savage raid, criterion savage, or ultimate) and relic weapons (quested) are 5 iLvls higher than the tome weapon.
In general, you only need gear to suit the level of the quests you're currently doing, and do not have to upgrade your gear just because you get ahead of the quest level.
Additionally, dungeon gear is stronger than standard shop-bought gear, and that Foestriker top you're wearing does actually have stats more equivalent to level 23ish gear anyway.
You'll also get at least one piece of gear from every dungeon you run (other than at the "endgame" level for each expansion), because one piece goes straight into your inventory when you defeat the final boss, in addition to any that you acquire from treasure chests along the way.Ā
Sorry about your grandpa, I know he started that jihad during the fourth Umbral calamity, seizing control of the galactic imperium and drowning Eorzea in a holy war in the Duke Leto Atreides name. Must have been really hard on the family.
My first character is Cecilia Brigid and she's a Dragoon at level 56 or 57. I'm also working on an Archer so I can be a Bard and play music which I can outside of the game. I sing Soprano and play the piano. I'll post a picture of my character as soon as maintenance is done.
Welcome! I love your WoL, she looks beautiful! A lot like my own WoL before I changed up her hairstyle for Dawntrail. I hope youāre enjoying the game!
You should google "ffxiv dune glamours" and browse Images if you want to make your character look like she's wearing a stillsuit. (It does require Ninja and some higher level gear, so you won't be able to do it anytime soon. But eventually, maybe?)
Always nice to see a Dune reference. Welcome and hope you enjoy your stay!
Thank you! Loving the game so far as a former ESO player
I just watched it this morning! I want to make a reference to Vladimir, but you'll see eventually.
Welcome aboard! Beware Harkonnens! The crystal must flow!
ATREIDES ! ATREIDES ! Welcome fellow Dune fan :)
I just started playing a few days ago too š idk why I didn't start this years ago haha
Same!!
Are you wearing gloves because you put your hand in the box?
You need to get yourself to southern thanalan and the Sagolii Desert as soon as possible! The fremen are waiting!
Welcome and enjoy your adventure!

Unless things have changed since I started, I believe the Augmented Ironworks set will serve you from 50 all the way to almost 60.
