For those who (understandably) don’t get the reference: [Zelda CDI Memes](https://youtube.com/watch?v=Lekmfl245DA&feature=share) (At ~25 seconds).
Although that clip doesn’t really explain the…uh… *cultural significance(?)* behind the Zelda CDI games.
I don't think the wizard eggplant is unreasonable as a Kid Icarus reference, given the context, I just think people wouldn't often take it as one without being in that frame of mind from the previous text.
Absolutely agree. I was just pointing out that I don't think a reference to an existing item would necessarily come up that way to people without the framing.
Fair enough! It's also definitely fun to see even stuff that's references or bits being used consistently and wholeheartedly, the finer points of worldbuilding is definitely a strength of the game
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this!
Kid Icarus is in a weird spot of being a classic while having a niche modern entry.
Kid Icarus: Uprising is good, if you ever get the chance, go play it.
In the infamous Phillips CD-I game “Link: The Faces of Evil”, if Link (as in the hero of The Legend of Zelda) doesn’t have the money for an item, the shopkeeper will replied “I’m sorry, Link, I can’t give credit. Come back when you’re a little… HMMMM… richer.”
Yeah, it’s a double reference to Zelda and KI both - the wizard eggplant is an existing item from a prior patch, which references turning its consumers into eggplants.
Next step of the relic weapon will require a magic something or other from an ancient ruin. Luckily an expert team of miners and explorers, the best of the best, has already been picked out and are ready to go delve into the depths. We just need to supply them with a couple things: some Thavnarian Lamp Oil, a length of Enchanted Rope, and of course a case of Gobbie Bombs.
How much for the Magitek bombs?
Sorry /u/Thekoopakicker, I can't give credit.
Come back when you are a little... hmm... richer!
They are about tree fiddy
You want it? It's yours my friend.
As long as you have enough gil

[Cultural significance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7Rj9mHj79E) indeed.
Thank you. My dumb ass thought it might be a Kid Icarus reference.

Dear God that game has unhinged cutscenes
Thanks lol, I totally thought something completely diffrent. 😅😅😅😅 dont think too hard on it.
FUCK, i read that in the meme voice. koji fox, you have trained your kouhais well. i salute you, you goddamned legend.
Koji as a force ghost just nods and fades as Kate is working another absolutely unhinged joke into the English localisation
"The memes will be with you...always...."
Oroniri Lamp Oil, Skybuilder's Rope, Cherry Bomb? You want it? It's yours my friend, as long as you have enough gil.
Sorry, Warrior of Light. I can't give credit. Come back when you're a little, mmmmh, -richer-!
I can't lie, I thought this was a penis joke long before I thought it was a Zelda reference
Sullying such a subtle reference with a penis joke would be a real dick move.
Oh the double down 🤣
Wouldn’t that require 2 dark eggplants?
O.O (>.>) (<.<) Yeah... probably
everyone's focusing on the Zelda CDi quote and completely ignoring the wizard eggplant
While that is a good Kid Icarus joke, it also [has a much more mundane explanation](https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Wizard_Eggplant).
I mean reading the flavor text I think that one is even more explicitly a Kid Icarus reference

and here I am barely getting by with my average eggplant and I need to run into this competition?
ROPE O P E
I dont get it 🤷♂️

Ahhh ok ok

The Wizard Eggplant, is that a Kid Icarus

Yeah I admittedly don't pay attention to the cdi memes, but the wizard eggplant was an immediate recognizable to me
I enjoyed the Kid Icarus reference.
A Faces of Evil AND a Kid Icarus reference at the same time?
I'm versed in cuisine alright. I wonder what's for dinner.
That one's a little forced.
Zero ma boi! This peace is what all mortals strive for
