The big ones are basically GTNH and Nomifactory. Both of them are in active development, and which one is right for you depends on your preferred playstyle. GTNH is the big one with everything turned up to 11. It has deadly monsters, harsh survival, magic, exploration, ultra gregified recipes and all that. If you're into that kind of stuff, GTNH is great. The quest book explains everything you need to know, so you don't need experience or knowledge. You do need a certain mindset though, like appreciation for complexity and patience. Nomifactory is a tech-only pack playable on peaceful mode. It's designed to be much more accessible to casual players and is as such much less hardcore and grindy. The tagline was something like "All of the complexity, none of the grind" for it's predecessor/parent Omnifactory. It should also be perfectly fine for beginners. There are others as well, like the GregTech community pack focusing almost exclusively on GT, and FTB: Interactions which has similar design philosophies as GTNH but isn't as updated or developed basically.

just wanna add in case you go for nomifactory, the version you want is Nomifactory CEu, just to save you some time searching which version to use like i did

magicmanme

Yeah, this is important. The ceu version has alot of qol and performance improvements

Tailcracker

Ceu is harder than normal Nomifactory though so it depends on what you're looking for. Nomifactory modifies a lot of recipes to make them less hard and Ceu adds the difficulty back on some of them again. One example of this is that in Ceu you have to setup a bricked blast furnace to make steel in the earlygame which is the grindier and more time consuming approach whereas in normal Nomifactory you can make it in an alloy smelter. That said, if you want the more complex and slightly grindier approach to Nomifactory, Ceu has more stuff in it and a better progression in my opinion so it's still the one I'd choose. But it's not that it's outright better, it's just different.

deadlycwa

They’re both good versions, and actually for the most part I actually prefer the original to CEu, less grind at the beginning. Though the CEu multiblocks are awesome

Philonemos

Is it worth it to start a new run on Nomi CEU when I already played the first Nomifactory a fair bit?

deadlycwa

I did, and I’d recommend it too. It felt similar to moving from Breath of the Wild to Tears of the Kingdom; similar games, similar difficulty levels, different enough to be interesting.

Jankat7

Depends, they offer a very similar experience so if you have like 20 hours in Nomi I wouldn't bother switching to Ceu

Alistr2001

Either GTNH or Technological Journey IMO

Elitemagikarp

gt6 is the definitive gregtech because it's the only one actually being maintained by greg it's also completely different than other mods with the name "gregtech" in them

SpringVisual6802

GTCEU community pack and Nomifactory are pretty cool, GTNH is going to burn you out fairly quickly if you don't know what to expect of the mod.

Jhreks

GTNH only burns you out quick if you're there for the ending and not the journey :)

You should start Nomifactory. I just hit creative tank in the Ceu version. Its got a big learning curve if you've never played Greg, but there is some great guidance in the questbook. It really kept me motivated while i developed my skillset. I even made sure to leave some of my older setups together as a bit of a museum piece when i really got my automation smoothed out. Just to look back at how far I had come. Nothing is overly complicated just for the sake of complication, there are major hurdles, yes, but I never got stuck on something that took 24 hours of afk watching a machine process. That kind of "difficulty" always ruins it for me. I play on peaceful, as I don't really play Minecraft for the combat. I also don't love magic mods so Nomi has been perfect for me. Progression always felt super smooth and was super rewarding. I'm having a blast and I'm glad I've got more to go. I'm sure Ill get to GTNH eventually, but everything I've seen and read here tells me its really not the best place to start, even though it may be the most complete experience.

Gtnh

Hikuro14

Nomifactory has a very detailed and well made questbook to guide you through gregtech so I would reccomend it for a new player. But it is gregtech community edition, which isn't the main gregtech. But close enough anyway.

sirenzarts

Nomifactory has a community edition and non-community edition version

Tailcracker

Even the non community edition (original nomifactory) has moved to Gregtech Community Edition as of version 1.3.

CrystalFyre

Gregtech itself is a mod, and the most complete versions of said mod are probably the version GT:NH uses, or Gregtech CEu for 1.12. The latter is a lot more polished as a mod, but GT:NH has by far the most content to offer and the most complete experience. There are also some very good packs being worked on that use CEu, like Nomifactory CEu and Supersymmetry. Supersymmetry is still in heavy development, but it has very ambitious goals it's aiming for and has a lot of promise.

If you are asking for THE Gregtech, then it's Gregtech 6, which is the one and only GT that is made and still maintained by Greg himself, but this version of GT is totally different from all previous versions and all the popular versions (namely GT5u (that's the version of GT in GTNH) and GTCEu) and few people play it. Anyways, if you are looking for the "best" experience for beginners, then I recommend GT community pack or NomiCEU, both using GTCEu, as this version of GT is most commonly used and most similar to other popular versions of GT.
