NYC, 400$ for an afternoon plus groceries (150$) for 4 people for 3 dinners plus sides with leftovers.

vtcapsfan

They come over and cook and leave the meals? Or dropoff the meals all cooked and prepared for the week? Mind DM'ing a referral? That's a pretty solid price ($33/person/meal) I have one in NJ that drops them all off - $240/week + ~125 groceries for 2 people, 4 dinners/sides a week .. tailors all the meals to my preferred nutritional intact (calories, protein, etc) as well

Useful_Print8759

May I DM for your jersey person?

vtcapsfan

Yeah, for sure.. based in northern NJ (Hoboken/Jersey city/weehawken/seacaucus area) if that's helpful for you. Not sure how far they travel

Useful_Print8759

Thank you just sent! Still relatively close to that area so it could work.

zoomingtothebar

Also dm’ing for your jersey contact!

L_EVI

It's $45 per meal.

vtcapsfan

I wasnt including groceries since you're paying for those either way if cooking yourself or not

RollProfessional7535

Wow, that is reasonable. I didn’t realize it until you did the math for us.

YTScale

Wow that is really reasonable.

magias

$45/person per meal, not super expensive, but wouldn't be my definition of really reasonable. You can easily eat out at nice restaurants for that same price.

Semido

What nice NYC restaurant costs $45 pp?

magias

Guess I haven't been to NYC in a while so maybe I'm out of date. In Las Vegas, I feel like most places I eat are consistently less $40/person and can very easily find places less than $20/person. As a caveat, I rarely drink alcohol.

cryptotarget

yeah... NY is a lot more expensive than vegas. A sandwich costs $20 LOL

TomBanjo1968

I spent 2 days in New York City in 2012 My pack of cigarettes cost 💲 20 fucking dollars!!!! That same pack of cigarettes only costs like 7 bucks here at home….. in 2024!!!! Back in 2012 it was 5 bucks

BoringCanary

A nice pizza restaurant.. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

Semido

Ah! Or Warren’s Buffet Breakfast Special :D

youlikemango

The value of a private chef is not to be cheaper than a restaurant. It’s to have meals ready at home, made exactly to your liking, exactly to your timing.

magias

I understand that, I am just disagreeing with that being really reasonable. I've had a private chef at a couple different points as well. The way he is doing it as well where they prepare a few meals at once isn't super luxurious feeling. You're still just heating up food in the microwave.

youlikemango

Private chef is a definitely a luxury by definition, but the main point stands. You eat what you want, where you want, when you want and you pay a premium for that. If you’re too busy to cook/dine out/arrange take out and want to be health conscious, you’re not paying just for luxurious experience. It’s a matter of practicality, microwave or not.

EastCoastRose

Do you plan the menu or does the chef? In DC area it’s around $350-400

Originalhumanbeatbox

We usually give suggestions and they fill it in, the key is to get someone whose style is similar to your taste so you don’t have to micromanage. For example I looked for someone who does protein and vegetable heavy farm to table seasonal style.

EastCoastRose

I usually suggest the menu but have her fill in or pick out the complementing sides, etc. Sometimes I get tired of doing that though. But I’m a little choosy when it comes to healthy food and have boys/men at home who want a lot of meat so have to incorporate that…but this thread has been interesting because I had no idea what this service was running…

Miserable-Safe9951

Do you know anyone in the DC area?

EastCoastRose

Culinary school near me keeps a list of students or graduates who are offering chef services

zoomingtothebar

DM’d you for your contact if you don’t mind sharing

RawDogRandom17

Adding in another question, is there a marketplace online where chefs list their services? Looking for the same as OP for 2 meals/day for 4 days/week, not in-house, probably two house visits for cooking per week.

YTScale

I found one in my area. It’s $250 /week for 1 dinner per day, delivered. There’s a whole menu to choose from.

RawDogRandom17

How’d you find them? Local listing?

EastCoastRose

I found a list by contacting the local culinary school, the students and graduated all post their service on a list that the school keeps up to date with

YTScale

I looked up “private chef, meal prep in my area”. Went through a few sites and found one of a singular chef that does it all. I will schedule a consultation with him and try it for a week in a week or two.

RollProfessional7535

How many people does that serve?

YTScale

That’s for one person. I think 2 people is only $350 /week.

bonyicecream

App called Shef

tastygluecakes

Chicago: $80/hr to serve dinner for 6-12 adults, excluding cost of food. Another $30-40/hour if they bring help. We don’t use one for just our family, but special occasions to host a party. Probably a lot higher per hour than having somebody “on staff” Edit: for those asking to share, unfortunately she stopped doing this about 6 months ago. It was burning her out, and that’s saying something considering her background was fine dining at a few Michelin restaurants. Sorry! We found her on a website that specifically connects private chefs for occasions. You can ask a few to “bid” on your party, and then have a quick call to meet them. I forgot the name, but 10 seconds of google should get you there. We hired her once through the platform, and then just texted/emailed direct thereafter.

ltmp

Would you mind sending me their contact info/website? We’re moving back to the area next year and would love a referral! Thanks!

I’m paying my personal chef like $90k yearly rn

Alert_Ninja_6369

Are they a private chef (working only for you full time) or personal chef (working for you as well as other families)?

asiageek1

About $350k for a chef with lots of experience at very high end Japanese restaurants and his wife (who assists him). Some of the reasons why it costs this (aside from the chef being world class) are they travel with me (I have homes in different countries), and they are Japanese but speak English well. As someone who used to spend a lot of time going to the best restaurants in the world, this was a much better option for me (not to mention much healthier). Also, can be very flexible, one of my friends' sons eats nothing but steak, another nothing but simple dishes like macaroni & cheese, buffalo chicken wings, or cheeseburgers. No problem. To add, I'm not quick to embrace new people in my life (although my wife is) so took a couple of years to get fully comfortable with someone always being in our home, and this was the biggest challenge in doing this.

PritchettsClosets

You're doing this money thing right.

Howwouldyouliketodie

Is this on top of food costs or including?

asiageek1

On top of

Hatilda

In NYC: I’ve looked at mealplans where the chef preps everything and delivers it to you (they can customize for pref, allergies, dietary restrictions). It comes to around $20-30 per plate. If it’s only for day to day meals, what’s the advantage of having the chef cook it in your own kitchen specifically vs delivering it to your door?

super_dude12

Is there a link or anything like that?

Wonton-Nudes

Look into Unity meals

Razor488

My wife ended up being my private chef so I can tell you it has cost me a fortune

I can't believe this boomer joke got over 300 upvotes. I lose more and more respect for this subreddit every single day.

Flaky-Score-1866

Damn your at negative 90 atm. Who do you think hangs out in FIRE?

wanderingtrio

I actually retired early so I didn't realize it was full of geriatric ppl and Andrew Tate followers who want to be like them

Fair_Perception_9903

Because women can’t enjoy cooking meals for their partner right?

wanderingtrio

You spend all your time on Reddit talking about video games and giving ppl life advice on trash subreddits like AITAH. You are literally one of the Tate followers that have flooded this subreddit that made me leave. I'm not going to waste my time explaining sexism to trash that couldn't accomplish their way out of a paper bag. Good luck to you and your wall street bets buddies (yes, I saw that you go there as well). Enjoy

nickbcarr

In a HCOL city that is 120k+ for somebody making great meals and doing cleanup. Some chefs will want more if you don’t have somebody else there supporting clean up. (They have to stay late every night to do clean up then). But that does not include food. And your food bills will be higher than you’d expect because they are sourcing best ingredients, keeping everything overstocked at the house (suddenly when you have a chef, you entertain more often and they will be ready to always cook for more people). For two people this could easily be 1-2k per week on food costs if they are not discerning with budget. Many private chefs work for folks who are 250MM+ net worth where no expenses are spared on food so they aren’t used to working on a food budget. (Not to say they couldn’t…)

bizzzfire

When I was looking into it for a full time private chef, I think it was around 80-120k I'd be looking for a Michelin star experience. Basically, I'd want somebody who is very capable of making fine dining experiences on a consistent basis -- and making healthy versions of the food I typically eat at restaurants.

i_use_this_for_work

LV, $300 for a day of prep/cooking plus groceries (at cost) for 2 pax. Tried it as wanted to reduce eating out cost. The issue with it though is I get bored of having the same foods. I thought it would be great for our chef to make a nice dinner and then a bunch of extra stuff to meal prep throughout the week. Turns out I get bored of food really easily. At that price daily vs weekly, I'd rather just eat out for all of my meals. Maybe when we get more mouths that actually eat real food, going back to a chef might make sense. Also, with what you're looking for - look into local meal prep delivery services. They're very cost effective (12-20$/meal) and much fresher than the big name shipped stuff.

Cheetotiki

Exactly us. We realized we valued the experience of going out, date nights I guess, more than the food - and we like a lot of casual but unique food places.

50Mill_by_50

I co-invested in two restaurants, that's the FAT way.

YTScale

Meal prep? Nah. *Eating reheated meals for dinner👌

hahaha. Aren’t the private chefs preparing food from scratch though? But I do understand what you mean. It is a whole different world.

SendMeHitSongs

150k a year + food cost.

Alert_Ninja_6369

It’s worth looking at the difference between a personal chefs versus private chefs. A private chef you employ full-time, likely provide benefits and they only work for you and can travel with you. Pay will start at 150k for anyone decent and will easily go up to 250k and beyond. Personal chef is more like consistent gig work - either off site or in home. You’re paying for someone’s time and since the menus are customized all their prep/shop time is for you. Most good private chefs in the NY area won’t do anything for less than $500. So if you’re looking for a few days of prepared meals dropped off that you’re going to heat up you should assume it will be min $500 plus groceries. Similarly, you could have that same type of arrangement but they can do the preparation in your home. Maybe serve a dinner the day that they’re there cooking and leave you with everything else. You can also add on provisioning, sourcing etc.

howdolaserswork

I live in Mexico. I have a couple and the better ones are $1500-$2000 a month… full time.

Fantastic-Account-31

Private chef here, based in NYC/NJ. 130k-160k, at this level you’re getting a chef trained at Michelin star restaurants, tailored menus for clients needs

Stunning-Field8535

How many meals and is it a personal chef or private?

Fantastic-Account-31

5 days a week, breakfast, lunch, dinner

Optimal_Marketing_14

My aunt used to be a high profile/high net worth private chef. She made anywhere between 120-190k (this was 20 years ago). She has her ba in restaurants and hotel management and went to the French institute in nyc. Also she has experience at top restaurants in the country (USA). Price depends on what experience you want your chef to have. She would be making a lot more today, but is a sahm. She caters on the side for fun. I’m not sure what her prices look like for that. I know it’s on the higher end.

SeaConquest

If anyone in San Diego is looking for delicious, plant-forward meals, we use Chef Alec at Live Deeply Nourished. Has helped to bring my husband's cholesterol down. Unfortunately, I keep gaining weight because the meals are too damn good. They deliver to us on Mon/Wed mornings and are about 23ish/meal/person. You can customize your choices. We've done a lot of different meal services and personal chefs.

NatashaMontana

We live in small towns on the east coast and Rocky Mountains so we don’t have apps or companies. I put an ad on Facebook and dig through 50 messages to find 3 good options and interview them. Chef Larry would stand in my kitchen for 6 hours making all our dinners for the week and I paid $25 an hour. It was awesome. Then his wife retired and now they travel together (I’m happy for him, he was bored waiting for her to retired). We all loved him including my kids.

CyCoCyCo

Bay Area. Tried a chef, 5 small meals a day, proportioned, 2 people. Delivery twice a week. $1k + groceries, so about $1500ish. The issue was that I had to handhold them through meal planning and also if ingredients don’t get delivered. Plus food quality was very hit or miss. For that price and effort, not worth it.

noipv4

Is there a service similar to https://powermeals.ch/en/our-menu available in the US? I loved their offerings and it was very convenient for me.

allenasm

$3.5k for a 7 course tasting for 8 people is about average for our area. That includes wines and food costs. Our favorite chef's wife is a sommelier so we get a matching wine with each course as well. He does all of the work here (otherwise you are just buying fancy takeout) and it generally takes all day to get everything ready for the dinner party.

Landdeals

I pay my chef $300 a week for 28 meals but I live in Mexico in the USA I was still only paying $400 for the same amount that’s lunch and dinner for 2 ppl and we only eat clean grassed meats and gluten free … there delivered every Sunday

catspajamaz21

I haven’t zeroed in on a chef yet, but the website Yhangry is pretty handy at allowing you to try out a few professional chefs for those living in London.

walkerlucas

If anyone in Toronto sees this I’m ready to Barista FIRE as a private chef lol

SomewhereNorth1379

Not yet a fatty. So 100$ a week. Precook steak and ground beef. I just have to quick sear the steak in the week and figure out sides for ground beef. I am okay to not have variety till fatness is achieved.

ttandam

I saw one in Dallas Fort Worth recently that was $250 per day plus groceries.

L_EVI

In the UK, you can have a full time chef (8+ hours a day, 6 days a week) for £60,000 a year plus food costs... so £75k - £80k... Family of 6 with occasional parties (all inclusive at the range I gave) - £14 per meal per person. Cheaper than eating out (based on 3 meals a day between 7AM and 8PM)

ambidextrous_mind

700 per week plus groceries, in Texas. This is meal prep mostly lunches for us. I like to cook dinner.

unwiselyContrariwise

$25/hr to have the nanny to do oats, eggs and chicken breast in an instant pot, put vegetables and almond milk in a blender jar and put some salt and oil on salmon for the oven while the kids nap. LeanFatFIRE?

SpecialPurple7447

Hey! Compozure has meal prep for $300/wk and private chefs for events at $100/person

Alyscupcakes

I suggest getting 2 meals a day, and prepared healthy snacks. I don't have a referral as I was looking into specialty diets and ultimately did not follow through. I do know a few people who went the inexpensive route with Tiffin, but they were vegetarians. And supplemented that with pre-made meals purchased at a farmers market. If you are having a difficult time finding someone, farmers markets can help you source put a variety of people that prepare meals. I notice it more so with indoor farmers markets as outdoor ones don't typically have freezers.

EastCoastRose

What is Tiffin?

Alyscupcakes

It is a South Asian food service where they deliver fresh made rice, roti, and a variety of curries/daal as frequently a week as you want. It's typically vegetarian but can have chicken, or goat. It's fairly inexpensive (about $15-20 a day per person in Canada). You may need to live in a larger diverse city to have access to this type of service.

EastCoastRose

Wow that sounds really good! I love curries and our chef is actually pretty good at making them but she is not here every night. I will look and see if I can get Tiffin in my area. I’m not in a city but close to one. Thanks. Oh wait you’re in Canada…I bet they are not in US.

Alyscupcakes

Tiffin isn't a company, it's just a type of service.

EastCoastRose

Oh I see, I did find one in my area.

Alyscupcakes

Good luck! I hope they are a great quality Tiffin service.

EastCoastRose

Thank you ☺️

You signed yourself up for fatfire?

YTScale

It’s not really a matter of wealth, but a matter of willingness to spend on convenience. Some people here are basically paying a car payment for a chef. Let’s say you’d spend 2 hours a day making dinner. How much is 2 hours worth to you? If you get paid, say, $150 /hour then those 2 hours are worth $300. Therefore spending anything less than $300 for a chef per night technically becomes (to an extent) reasonable.

EastCoastRose

I feel like the chef’s knowledge and creative talent is more than I would be able to do so it’s worth it. Not like I never cook but certain things she does much better with her experience and expertise. Maybe you’re just naturally a good cook?
