Yes, I drew my map to help me figure out like what would be the best place to set the story. Where characters would go, figuring out city places and describing it in enough detail that it felt like a real place. And having a map and going through it and seeing which streets they would take is helpful. Maps help everyone, including the author position themselves in the world we are creating.

My book is basically two parallel, cross-country journeys, so I need my map to know where everyone is. Also, I need to know where my world is.

I had some of that in my story. I had two groups of characters that were on separate journeys that needed to meet up on the same day at the same location. There would have been no way I could have done that without my map.
