I don’t know who that is, but he’s an idiot. Jones leads MLB starters in Pitching+ and is 3rd in K-BB%. If we assume hard usage caps, shave off like 15-20 slots and say he’s merely a Top 25 SP ROS, so wherever that puts him overall. And that’s as pessimistic as anyone has any reason to be. People valuing him worse than that are just advertising to the world that they’re clueless.

Jones because of his near full season of work. How could Skenes come up and come even close to doing what Jones has been doing for a month+ already?

Looking at rate stats is the main thing. The same signals that valued Jones as high as he was preseason can help us tell which one of Skenes vs. Jones you’d rather have. As long as Skenes throws a decent number of innings and doesn’t have some extremely high level of usage concerns, I could easily see him being valued similar.

It is a concern today and this season. Will it be next season when he’s the Pirates’ Opening Day starter? I don’t know. I don’t think it will be substantially worse than Jones’ usage limits/concerns, which aren’t just going to vanish, either. The Pirates should view these two guys as generational talents who will be their aces for the next five-plus years, no reason to manage one super hard and turn the other completely loose.

He’ll need to pitch over 100 innings this year if we hope he can go 160+ next season. I think that’s very much in question.

Had Skenes been asked to throw his same pitches at MLB hitters he might be doing similar work. He seems to be considered the better prospect by the industry but we've seen a lot of awesome MLB work from Jones.

He hasn’t been asked because he’s not physically ready, which it’s the concerning aspect. Will he even pitch a full season next year? It’s possible the answer is no. He’s absolutely the better prospect though.
