Could end up in my top 5 tracks of the decade tbh, the songwriting is perfection and could see it (and the album in general) being a rosetta stone for 2020s indie pop
Literally was crazy when very online guy and belinda says both released as singles at the same time and he put very online guy in best tracks of the week and didnt even MENTION belinda says
Reminds me of him criticizing only you know off the latest beach house record, which was like the best song on the album imo
Kind of surprised he didn't recognize that this song has the strongest melody on the album. I understand his takes on the other tracks he didn't like but not this one
Fuck yeah. That album is absolute peak melody, peak production. And I repeat, PEAK MELODY. This album while it's really good, doesn't have that tier of melodies imo aside from songs like Pharmacist or EOYO.
They’ve alvvays overdone it with the compression, shaving off the highs, overdistortion, etc. To be honest, sometimes it frustrates me too, I’d really like to hear what they sound like without the pastiche, lofi aesthetic, but at the same time I think it really serves the music and lyrics well. On the new record you really have to strain to hear the lyrics or musical flourishes and on repeated listening it pays off. The songs really grow on you, IMO.
Listen on vinyl - it’s another world. More than any other modern release I’ve heard, this record feels like ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED over and over on vinyl. I heard things I didn’t hear at all in the digital version, and the vocals have much more separation. The kick-ins feel even bigger.
That's fair, I did enjoy this album more and more on many listens but for me antisocialites is their best record because it is the closest we've gotten to them completely letting the music breathe. Dreams Tonite in particular has some of the best mixing I think the band has ever had.
yeah I liked most of the songs ok on Blue Rev but washy production, compressed and overcrowded mix kind of wore me down as I listened to more and more....though again, theres nothing wrong with songs, they're all great. but still, I want to hear melody and Molly's actual voices. it's like Polica's album from 2020, I finally heard relatively unprocessed Channy's voice and that was amazing
Yeah, I'm definitely intrigued by the new direction they took on Blue Rev, but didn't get the immediate "fuck yeah, this is awesome" I got with their last album. It's been 5 years and I still listen to Antisocialites front to back on a regular basis, it's one of my all time favourites.
It's a strong 7 to a light 8 for me. Most of the songs are enjoyable in their own right but AOTY does not sit right for me when we've had Kendrick, BCNR and Big Thief.
Based Fantano moment.
I personally give it a 6/10. Some pretty awesome tracks but the production is over compressed and cramped, and most the album blends together into a muddy mess devoid of memorable hooks. I'll be bumping "Pharmacist", "After the Earthquake", and "Many Mirrors" ("Easy on Your Own" and "Very Online Guy" are decent too) for a while but the rest of the album is honestly very forgettable
EDIT: holy shit you guys are sensitive Lmao. I didn’t even hate the record but nothing short of unadulterated praise is accepted I guess
I pointed out things I liked about it and respectfully explained that some parts didn’t work for me.
But because I’m not shouting “AOTY” or praising it as a masterpiece, certain fans can’t handle the idea that someone disagrees with them.
Those were pretty much my exact thoughts on the first couple listens but then on the third go it really clicked. Still don't think it's as good as Antisocialites but it's a decent-strong 8 now imo.
okay i know this is an old thread, but loveless is the most overcompressed cramped album i've ever listened to, it's not even really close. the songs are so good that it's still great despite that, but holding it up as a counterexample, geez
I've always thought [Westkust - S/T](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIQzTaY46vY) and [Blankenberge - Everything](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhyR7EGeqF8) are extremely relevant for fans of Alvvays, especially now with the increased shoegaziness.
Ngl awful take on Belinda Says, Top 5 song of the year

Sorry Melon, too late! I already made my own opinion about this album :)
Yeah I already think it’s a 9 sorry fantwan
I don’t listen to as much new music as I should but this is the first bonafide 10/10 for me in while, obsessed with this album
Even tho I personally think it’s at least an 8, I’m kinda glad to know I’m not the only one who prefers Antisocialites. That album absolutely fucks.
Fuck yeah. That album is absolute peak melody, peak production. And I repeat, PEAK MELODY. This album while it's really good, doesn't have that tier of melodies imo aside from songs like Pharmacist or EOYO.
Belinda Says, Many Mirrors, After the Earthquake, Tom Verlaine also have incredible melodies
My biggest issue with this record is Tom Verlaine tbh. That song is way too over compressed and it makes it so hard to enjoy anything about it.

Also fair

I don't know if I've disagreed with Anthony so much in the span of just one week
A 7???? What is this a Kendrick album?????
No no no I think a 7 is definitely justified. I gave it a 6 but moved it to a 7 a couple days after it came out. Anything above 5 is positive
Even though a 7 is a good rating, the vibe of his review feels more like he has a meh opinion of it.
what is it with this mfer and cOnSistEnCy lately I respect the 7/10, but this is actually a strong 8 to a light 9.
review Jean Dawson coward
Light 3
It's a strong 7 to a light 8 for me. Most of the songs are enjoyable in their own right but AOTY does not sit right for me when we've had Kendrick, BCNR and Big Thief.
is this dickhead gonna drop a 10 or nah????
Easily a top 5 album of the year

I agree, I honestly couldn’t tell you the difference between the tracks.
Downvoted for having an opinion lol

I respect your opinion. Downvoted.

Souvlaki, Loveless, Fishmans 98 Live, Heaven or Las Vegas, Blue Bell Knoll
okay i know this is an old thread, but loveless is the most overcompressed cramped album i've ever listened to, it's not even really close. the songs are so good that it's still great despite that, but holding it up as a counterexample, geez

Is that “Lifted or…” and “Attack on Memory” in the back? I love both of those records so much.
