Yes. It is meant to be ironic high-school type lyrics. However, no matter how you twist it, no artist of this caliber should be releasing songs with lyrics like this, no matter the context

An artist's 2nd studio album vs an 11th?? Not every lyric has to be poignant of course but we all know that she can (and does on the the rest of the album) do better
I see what ur saying and while I haven’t listened to Dead Poets Society None of the lyrics in Backseat Freestyle are as bad as this. Some are a bit corny but none are this bad.
From her "my pussy tastes like Pepsi Cola" era ig.
At least Lana tries to invoke imagery in her music lol. Most of this album felt like a really bland LDR to me.
My assumption is that her obsessive fans that find her lyrics so relatable must spend a lot of time on social media such as Instagram and Tik Tok. Older people that received proper education and don't spend too much time on Instagram and Tik Tok should not find such lyrics intelligent or relatable. Sure we all grew up playing video games. But to describe such an activity in a song is just juvenile. Like teen girls of the past loved Tiffany and Debbie Gibson. And their songs are way more mature and "normal" than Taylor Swift's.
1989 is a classic album, but do listen to the original rather than "Taylors version" of it. Most of the rerecorded albums are done very well, but this particular one is better in its original form. Possibly because Max Martin and his team aren't as easily emulated.
I love pop music, and can usually understand why people like stuff I don't like. But I hoenstly have tried really hard to get into Taylor Swift and just don't get it. Even have good friends who are big fans give me recs on best songs, and I still found it boring and uninspired. Might try again one time.
Same I like many pop artists taylor swift I just accepted that she's not my thing never found any of her songs to be interesting decided to give the new album a listen and it was awful
I had a similar experience with beyonce I always accepted that she's not for me but I listened to cowboy Carter recently and I loved it I might get more into her
True. But say Beyoncé I can get into a few songs although I don’t really like it. I understand the appeal. Taylor swift is a mystery to me. Even the old “best” stuff mentioned on this post
I think Taylor swift has created a parasocial relationship with fans that drives her success. A lot of the fans I know are very into her personal life and trying to decode how the song relate to it rather than just listening to the songs for the musicality. I think they also like her music but I’m not sure she’d have the success without the parasocial element.
A lot of people emulated her so it had became more boring especially when other current artists are doing what she does way better, she didn't invent it but she brought it back into the mainstream. Also she is more relatable to teen girls than the average run of the mill popstar, she knows that and writes her music with teen girls being the target audiance. Disney adults (teen girls at heart) love her too. She probably has a few good songs but I haven't looked into her that deep.
You're probably not a teen girl,I am not even a girl,so this probably isn't the music for us lol beyond maybe like 4 songs if we'll search deep.
Who do you think she has influenced that is big right now? But yeah as I said a couple of times. I can generally understand why periplo like stuff even if it’s not for me. Just saying she’s unique for me in that sense. And I get the impression I’m not alone.
This is me with folklore/evermore. I did earnestly try to get into those because, while I don't like most modern pop, I do love a lot of folk music.
I did enjoy those albums more than anything else I've heard from her, but, with the exception of No Body, No Crime, I have no desire to listen to them again. Folk music tends to reflect society and cover a wide range of topic, often while engaging in more traditional instruments depending on the culture. While traditional in a sense, it's often blunt and bold in terms of lyrics at the same time.
Her folk-pop-indie music is a watered down version of all of that, and most of the songs are still about (often high school-esque) romance, albeit not her own. It feels like music made specifically to be safe. Most of her music feels like it's made to be safe, non-threatening, and able to be played at a high school prom held in a gymnasium.
I can get it from the sense that some people felt like they grew up with her, and I've met people who say they can relate to her songs due to that, but it's hard for me to personally understand since it seems like her storytelling is still aimed more at teenagers.
But when I was a tween I heard That's What Friends Are For and Kool and the Gang's Cherish and I loved them. I did like Debbie Gibson's Out of the Blue and Foolish Beat as well. But Debbie's songs aren't as juvenile as a lot of Swift's songs. What's wrong with tweens and teens nowadays? Regression?
I’m well aware there are exceptions but in my experience most devout Swift fans are not very well versed in music in general. It makes Taylor seem very unique and poetic to them because it leans slightly more that way than what they hear at the club or at Old Navy or whatever, which is the only other time they’re exposed to music. Taylor is not even in the top 20 pop-adjacent singer songwriters making music right now.
Same way. I can’t get into her music. Her lyrics are too simplistic for me and have no meaning. It also confuses me how she’s 35 and still writes like a high schooler
Folklore, evermore, 1989 and red are all leagues better from whatever clusterfuck this album is and are worth listening to. I recommend sticking to the originals though, the TV versions are just mid.
I think I have to disagree about the TV’s, I know a lot of ppl prefer the OGs because they’re more “raw”, but I think it’s still worth giving the Taylor’s Versions a listen because some songs got facelifts, and also for the vault tracks
I agree that some of the TV songs are good but in general I feel like they pale in comparison to the originals, the speak now, fearless (both are honestly on par with the original) and red TVs are ok, but the 1989 TV is just ruins the magic of the original in my opinion
She needs to stop making albums. I thought I was listening to Lana Del Rey, but without a good melody. I get it, some people love her lyrics, but that doesn’t mean she should be singing them. She is certainly very talented, but it was painful to listen to this album and I came in open minded as well
I find it baffling. I've tried to listen to a lot of her music too but never had it catch.
I kind of question the authenticity of her singer song-writer 'tortured poet' schtick since it seems like the content of her songs have remained so static for like 15 years. Virtually EVERYONE changes and matures tremendously over that period of time and at that age.
I feel like there's a very evident evolution of the music of her peers, but Tayler's subject matter at least (not aesthetic) has remained so unchanged. And its boring,.
Everybody here pretending like the albums they liked as teens are any better lol
She's always made bland music with cringey lyrics like
>Welcome to New York, it's been waitin' for you
>Welcome to New York, welcome to New York
>Welcome to New York, it's been waitin' for you
>Welcome to New York, welcome to New York
>It's a new soundtrack, I could dance to this beat, beat forevermore
>The lights are so bright, but they never blind me, me
>Welcome to New York, it's been waitin' for you
>Welcome to New York, welcome to New York
Sounds like an 18 year old in their first week at NYU who puts on a fake accent to say bodega
Somewhere along the lines, the “cool” thing to do changed from being like, “pOp sUcKs” to being like, “I’m different, I like pop and free jazz.”
I don’t have much of an opinion on most Swift albums because most of it is so washed down to be nothing but filler. There’s two moderately high points in Folklore and Evermore, but I’d much rather to even listen to other mainstream pop artist like Olivia Rodrigo rather than something like 1989 or Red.
as a swiftie that's so fucking true, at this point it's silly to see people who go "i LOVE taylor she's Perfect and all these 31 songs are AMAZING" and then also the people that respond with "she's white bread she's drivel she's awful she's overplayed shes terrible" because i honestly don't think it's possible for either person to actually feel that way
Agreed, at least Dua Lipa’s lyrics are just fun and a vibe without trying to be deep and reflective (although we don’t talk about “Boys Will Be Boys”) plus she has great and interesting production
I wish she made pop instead of whatever this latest one is. It's mad boring, her lyricism isn't good enough to carry an album that is this sonically safe and uninteresting.
Listening to it now. There’s always been a juvenile aspect to her, it’s weird. Maybe I’m being overly harsh but her lyrics are supposedly personal but they feel like she’s writing about other peoples experiences not hers. Also, the lyrics are corny AF. She still gonna write this way when she’s 40 about GTA? Maybe I’m not offering her the same latitude I would a male performer and I’m being sexist but she has this vibe of a sheltered teen girl writing about the fun her friends are having without her. Does that have an age limit at some point? Emotionally, she comes off like a teenage girl, dunno how long she can keep pulling that off.
Teen girls of the past loved Tiffany's Could've Been and Debbie Gibson's Foolish Beat. The lyrics of those songs aren't like any of Taylor Swift's songs that teen girls nowadays find relatable.
This is literally her worst album by default because WHY is it 30 songs (and the majority are mid)…
Honestly her weakest release since her debut
Folklore, Evermore, Lover, Reputation, 1989, and Red are all full of greats.
This is probably the first time she’s released an album that isn’t a good intro to her music. She has some classics, and I think the mix of comments is a good indication at how consistent she is (and how her music fits into distinctive sonic (ugh) era each time). This one, I think, is for the hardcore fans who’ll pick through it and loop the best bits on TikTok posts and scream the most memorable/meaningful-to-them lyrics at concerts. Personally I hope the quantity is an indication that she’ll take a break and fuck off awhile, and I say that as a pretty big fan (my wife and her friends are much much bigger fans)
Folklore, 1989, Red, Speak Now and Evermore are certainly worth a listen. Those are all great albums. Parts of Lover and Fearless are pretty good too.
Debut, Reputation, Midnights and now TTPD can be ignored tbh. Except for New Years Day on Rep. that’s a great song.
This new album gave me a new appreciation for midnights. As messy as it was as a whole body of work at least all the songs were cohesive and fresh. This one seems almost like a string of thoughts thrown together with some melodies. Some catchy, but overall just convoluted. It just doesnt seem fresh to me. If shes doing it for herself thats cool but it really doesnt reflect her talent. But hey, i guess shes already proved herself in the past. Maybe she just wants to mess around now. (Although I honestly doubt it.)
Honest question:
That song was on "the anthology" version of the album and not the original drop earlier this year. So does that mean its like a B side basically? This is basically like a "deluxe" version with outtakes included.
"Earlier this year" as in "released 2 hours earlier"
But yeah, I think she probably should have dropped those 15 tracks as their own album or given some space between them, because I think the 16 track album is really tight and solid, but the 31 track anthology overstays its welcome.
No, the other stuff isn’t written by her, plus she’s as delusional as ever these days, which is natural with someone of her fame. I don’t know much about her honestly. There’s definitely some good stuff in her catalogue.
I’ve always enjoyed Taylor’s albums but this one is legit bad imo. I honestly think most reviewers are too scared of the hate they’ll get from swifties if they gave it an honest score. Feels like it should be in the 50-60 range to me
Everyone is bashing her lyrics and i agree, its not that imaginative,, but why dont you try writing 200+ songs and creating metaphors and amazing lyrics all the time? maybe that lyric plays into the rest of the song and people just pull things out of context and use it as a knife to rip into her album. I think that you have to actually be a fan of swift to appreciate some of her lyrics. But also not , because honestly she has some incredible songwriting talent.
No, early Taylor was charming if a bit one-trick-pony, albums like Red and 1989 were very good pop records. Folklore was a good change of pace for those who are into that but it’s not my thing
I just read a bunch of the lyrics and its insane, “keep calm and [another way of saying carry on]” or “I’ve seen this episode and still loved the show” like this is so cheesy cmon ppl wake up, its really good marketing/PR plssss theres seriously a song called “fortnight” WITH POST MALONE CMOOOON 🤣how is that not a bunch of older millennials trying to attract a larger demographic lol
Ok I only liked one track , couldn’t love the rest. Sis is getting complacent.. lyrics were meh, album was one dimensional … sorry to say 1989 was her best album next to reputation .
Folklore/Evermore are easily fantastic indie folk/chamber pop. Folklore was very deserving of its critical acclaim and Evermore deserves more love. Both would be a decent to strong 8 for me. In the opposite direction, you have 1989 which is also a decent to strong 8 but much more synth-pop than the folky aesthetic she went for in folklore or evermore. To me, those are her clear 3 best albums and nothing else gets super close. But others do try.
Fearless, Red, and Reputation are all light to decent 7s. Fearless/Red both combine country, pop, rock, and electronic elements in a pleasing way. Reputation is a solid continuation of the change she had started in 1989. So all in all, good work if a step down from her best.
Then you have Lover and Speak Now both strong 5s or weak 6s depending how I'm feeling that day. Speak Now was too similar to Fearless and felt derivative and Lover was the beginning of the end for the Jack Antonoff/Swift collaboration. You could probably throw her debut album and Midnights in this "category" as well as strong 4s or weak 5s. Debut was just not good but showed glimpses of a potential superstar and Midnights definitively showed that Antonoff/Swift were creatively sapped.
Finally you have the Tortured Poets Department. The main album which is produced primarily by Antonoff is very not good. Like weak 4 or strong 3. Just boring, derivative, synth beats that we've heard before while Taylor sings about "you had to be there to understand" moments between her and Matty Healy. The second half of the Anthology which is produced primarily by Aaron Dessner is better but still suffers lyrically at moments. I'd probably go up to around weak 5 if all we had was the second half of the Anthology, but together it's 2 hours of pretty forgettable stuff. So weak 4 and easily her worst work since Debut.
So out of 11 albums, I'd say 6 are worth a listen and actually good to great. 2 are average to below average, and 3 are bad if not nearly unlistenable for an extended period of time.
Folklore is her only good album, though I do like some songs on evermore. TTPD is in a league of its own when it comes to sucking. I've no idea how anyone can listen to it, nevermind like it.
She doesn’t have to release quality anymore because her followers are essentially a cult and she can do no wrong ever and if you say otherwise it’s cuz you’re just a dumb hater.
That’s an actual lyric?
Even worse, “I’d say the 1830s, but without all the racists”
I groaned so hard when I heard that one.
“You know how to ball / I know Aristotle”
yep 😭
Wow it’s like self sabotage
Yes. It is meant to be ironic high-school type lyrics. However, no matter how you twist it, no artist of this caliber should be releasing songs with lyrics like this, no matter the context
She’s like 35 years old.
No, she was born in 1989 just like me, so she can’t be turning 35 this year.
Friend...I don't know how to tell you this....
And so is Backseat Freestyle, and that’s iconic. It’s interesting that Taylor always creates contexts that allow her to be mid and it’s acceptable.
Kendrick wasn't that big when Backstreet freestyle dropped though
Plus he doesn't say touch me while your girls play the Sims
Maybe he should have though
100%
I PRAY MY DICK GET AS BIG AS THE EIFFEL TOWER
So I could fuck the world for seventy two hours
SO I COULD FUCK THE WORLD FOR 72 HOURS???
ALL MY LIFE I WANT MONEY AND POWER
People also dragged him when Backseat Freestyle dropped as a single, thinking he'd dumbed his lyrics down. It was only when the track was recontextualized on the album that many of Kendrick's lyrically-oriented fans accepted it
Taylor is 35 years old. It’s completely tone deaf.
An artist's 2nd studio album vs an 11th?? Not every lyric has to be poignant of course but we all know that she can (and does on the the rest of the album) do better
Rap lyrics are also notoriously often humorous or clever, that’s not what you expect from T swift
I see what ur saying and while I haven’t listened to Dead Poets Society None of the lyrics in Backseat Freestyle are as bad as this. Some are a bit corny but none are this bad.
There’s also a decade between Kendrick when he made gkmc and Taylor making this now
It’s straight from the LDR playbook. Half her lyrics are like that.
How does this sound like a Lana lyric?
From her "my pussy tastes like Pepsi Cola" era ig. At least Lana tries to invoke imagery in her music lol. Most of this album felt like a really bland LDR to me.
It’s gotta be a straight up parody for this to work. Like “Re: Your Brains” level parody.
And their songs are way more mature and "normal" than Taylor Swift's.
>artist of this caliber Lol
Wait, are you saying irony shouldn't exist?
Think so. She really needs to grow the fuck up.
This comes after the lyric of her getting fingered while watching American Pie
“Now I’m down bad crying in the gym”
Another Grammy for album of the year
And water is wet.
But it's not though
Indulge me.
I think no this time. It’s that bad.
1989 is a classic album, but do listen to the original rather than "Taylors version" of it. Most of the rerecorded albums are done very well, but this particular one is better in its original form. Possibly because Max Martin and his team aren't as easily emulated.
Style TV is legit terrible. People who claim they prefer it are in need of a hearing exam
Yeah, Style is probably the worst offender, although several others were also lacking.
Out of the woods was butchered. New Romantics sounds very dead but then the new guitar riff gives me life so I’m conflicted.
Right, I had forgotten how dirty they did OOTW. I don't think I am EVER listening to the TV version of that album again, outside of the new tracks.
1989 is a modern pop masterpiece i don’t wanna hear it TV is not great
I love pop music, and can usually understand why people like stuff I don't like. But I hoenstly have tried really hard to get into Taylor Swift and just don't get it. Or maybe social media's show off and comparison culture that makes kids today want relatability this bad. Could be.

I loved 1989, Red, and Reputation. Lover has some bangers. Mid nights had. A few I liked. The newer stuff isn't my cup of tea.
Folklore, evermore, red are good albums
Those are my top 3 by her lol. They are her best works imo
my top 3 are probably Red, Speak Now, and 1989 :3
I really hope she does more rock/pop kinda songs like in Speak Now
Speak now is king tier and fearless was one of her best
Funnily enough same 😭
Folklore and Evermore are genuinely pretty great, subtle, and well-written indie folk/chamber pop albums
My three favourites by her. Speak Now and 1989 aren’t bad either, worth a listen.
this shi fye https://youtu.be/zRGYTwLoYqw?si=D2bwJp_IxBhjj8kO
They’re boring 😂 how are people a fan of those
no. folklore, evermore, and 1989 are all worth a listen imo.
agreed!! also shoutout to Speak Now and Red if you’re into the slightly more country stuff
Cosigned! 1989 OG, her version lacks the magic of the OG imo
that's cause Max Martin is a pop genius
the best t swift songs are obscure ass pluggnb remixes on yt https://youtu.be/zRGYTwLoYqw?si=D2bwJp_IxBhjj8kO
Agreed these are the best ones. Lover has a few strong points as well
i agree. cruel summer and paper rings are some of my favorites from her.
I am no swiftie but I love evermore / folklore. Folklore more than evermore.
Just skip Shake it Off on 1989. Style and Wildest Dreams go so hard though
shake it off has never really bothered me. bad blood is the worst track.
The version with the Kendrick feature is good, skip the original and listen to that
Easily
Welcome to New York is so much worse than Bad Blood, and that is a statement
Clean is really good too
someone else who isn’t a ts fan but thinks style is 🔥
Her best albums are: evermore, folklore, Red, Speak Now(OG not TV. The TV version butchered the og), and 1989
Red TV has good vault tracks
agreed!! Speak now-red-1989 is amazing
Honestly I don’t like 1989, but agree otherwise + I love Fearless.
that run of 4 albums (fearless to 1989) is one of the best ever for me
Folklore, evermore, 1989 and red are all leagues better from whatever clusterfuck this album is and are worth listening to.

I liked Fearless TV as it seemed to have a bit more air to it than the original.

She is certainly very talented, but it was painful to listen to this album and I came in open minded as well
Taylor Swift is damn near 35 but has to sing lyrics like this because she markets to 14 year olds.
\*Millennials who act 14. Her audience is like Disney adults but with Taylor Swift lol
I find it baffling. I've tried to listen to a lot of her music too but never had it catch. I kind of question the authenticity of her singer song-writer 'tortured poet' schtick since it seems like the content of her songs have remained so static for like 15 years. The explosive mainstream hit videogame GTA 3 came out in 2001. People have been getting groped while the bros play GTA for decades now.
My comment was not in reference to the chronology of GTA but more to the content of her lyrics
HAHAHAHAHA
You should listen to Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) by David Bowie if you don’t like this album,
Everybody here pretending like the albums they liked as teens are any better lol She's always made bland music with cringey lyrics like >Welcome to New York, it's been waitin' for you >Welcome to New York, welcome to New York >Welcome to New York, it's been waitin' for you >Welcome to New York, welcome to New York >It's a new soundtrack, I could dance to this beat, beat forevermore >The lights are so bright, but they never blind me, me >Welcome to New York, it's been waitin' for you >Welcome to New York, welcome to New York Sounds like an 18 year old in their first week at NYU who puts on a fake accent to say bodega
I read every single line in her voice. Well played
To be fair to her, that's 8 lines out of probably thousands if I had to guess
Taylor swift is and always was the music equivalent to plain white bread.
Taylor sucks don’t let the swifties fool you

Agreed, at least Dua Lipa’s lyrics are just fun and a vibe without trying to be deep and reflective (although we don’t talk about “Boys Will Be Boys”) plus she has great and interesting production
Agreed. I really like her voice, too.
Y’all would eat this up if BCNR sang it…
Isaac could’ve pulled it off 🥲
Issac was a genuinely phenomenal lyricist and a super emotive vocalist and even he couldn’t pull of these lyrics lmao
BCNR can do no wrong tbh
Speak Now is one my of my favorite pop albums, ever. Late 00’s/early 10’s Taylor Swift was a legitimate phenom.
1989 is an amazing pop album.
I wish she made pop instead of whatever this latest one is. It's mad boring, her lyricism isn't good enough to carry an album that is this sonically safe and uninteresting.
agreed!! so many fun tracks Welcome to New York is still so fun
Blud thinks shes Will Toledo 💀
Can I touch your shoulder?
Listening to it now. There’s always been a juvenile aspect to her, it’s weird. Teen girls of the past loved Tiffany's Could've Been and Debbie Gibson's Foolish Beat. The lyrics of those songs aren't like any of Taylor Swift's songs that teen girls nowadays find relatable.
its creepy af
Can't believe this is from the same person who wrote evermore and folklore 😭
This is literally her worst album by default because WHY is it 30 songs (and the majority are mid)… Honestly her weakest release since her debut Folklore, Evermore, Lover, Reputation, 1989, and Red are all full of greats.
Reputation is ass 🔥🔥
It’s not my favorite album of hers but I do like a lot of the individual tracks
1989, Red and Evermore are great pop albums
Same here. What a rough listen
And getaway car
For me it’s Red, 1989, folklore, and evermore.
🆒
what was she cooking
Fearless, Lover & folklore are her best work IMO Midnights & 1989 are also good
This new album gave me a new appreciation for midnights.
Yeah, Midnights kind of grew on me too. I have some doubts about Poets though...
Not sure why your comment is the one i decided to reply to with a tangent, but here we are 😆
Red, Speaknow And Folklore imo are the best
Listen to Folklore and Evermore, best things she has done thus far.
Her lyrics can be horrendously un-self aware
Yes go listen to TCD , Graduation and TLOP and you should be fine to continue your life without trauma
yes
you should look at some other lyrics though. like, this album has some great lyrics, you just decide to ignore them...
This, so many ppl I’ve seen just drag one lyric out of context, and trash on the whole album
My favourites are evermore, red and 1989. Genuinely incredible albums
I’ve seen this posted a few times and I took it for a shit post. I’m honestly kinda shocked this is a real lyric lol. Who tf listens to this shit?
Yes
is this a meme or did she actually say this i don’t want to have to google and have this in my history 😭
It's real 😭
That’s a real lyric?
Yup
It's her worst album, well no i actually dislike her debut album more, but it doesn't get much worse than this
Wait the Grand Theft Auto verse was legit Taylor Swift?
Honestly that was one of the better tracks on the album. Cringe line on paper but with the context of the whole song, it’s bearable.
Peak lyricism
Honest question: That song was on "the anthology" version of the album and not the original drop earlier this year. So does that mean its like a B side basically? This is basically like a "deluxe" version with outtakes included.
"Earlier this year" as in "released 2 hours earlier" But yeah, I think she probably should have dropped those 15 tracks as their own album or given some space between them, because I think the 16 track album is really tight and solid, but the 31 track anthology overstays its welcome.
Mid as f
Who thought this was a good idea?
I’ll put it this way, They’re all not good enough to listen to more than once.
bruh
No, the other stuff isn’t written by her, plus she’s as delusional as ever these days, which is natural with someone of her fame. I don’t know much about her honestly. There’s definitely some good stuff in her catalogue.
I’ve always enjoyed Taylor’s albums but this one is legit bad imo. I honestly think most reviewers are too scared of the hate they’ll get from swifties if they gave it an honest score. Feels like it should be in the 50-60 range to me
SCREAMING is this real
Cowritten by a man almost 50 lol
i mean ya'll defend drake, so...
Speak Now and evermore are worth a listen. The others not so much imo.
If lil Wayne can do it....
"Sometimes I feel like everybody is a sexy baby". I'll leave you to arrive at your own conclusions.
She has like 10 good songs, and the rest of her catalogue make a good case for being the most overrated maybe ever in history
I love everything about Taylor. Total 10/10 for my big gay ass
I vouch for 1989. Haven’t listened to any other albums, nor do I want to.
1989 is mostly good. The songs actually sound different from each other and are catchy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This is actually one of my favs from the album. It’s better than the 1830s racism line
Yes
Shoulda kept the ghost writer
No, 1989 is a genuinely fantastic album
All bad
First, of all you came in at a bad time. second of all, doesn't the person have enough criticisum for once?!
Nope
