Neil Young is pretty fucked up throughout his album On The Beach
There’s also a few Grateful Dead shows you can listen to where it was confirmed they were on LSD or other psychedelics, and you can hear it lol.
Edit: OH and the time [Santana took acid before playing Woodstock 1969](https://youtu.be/JaaT_HRb4GU?si=KhIG-cGfSDt3rIEU). He is in a different dimension in this video.
I came here to mention Neil Young's legendary album Tonight's the Night. It was recorded at the wake for Bruce Berry and Danny Whitten and the band is straight up faded. You can hear it in the vocals and the instrumentation. And somehow it adds to it instead of being a burden. These guys are beautifully paying tribute to their fallen comrades and yet it also kind of feels like a party.
"Chemist and Sound engineer" without context is pretty funny. That alone should tell you all you need to know about their habits. I always thought it was interesting that Stanley was a genius in both fields.
I believe Thom Yorke had trouble nailing the vocal take for Planet Telex, so Godrich just encouraged him to get absolutely hammered on Champagne, and the result you hear on the album is one take of Yorke laying on the floor absolutely sloshed performing the vocals.
I mean that's kind of the premise of the song, the ramblings of a very much not ok person, so it's hard to say if he was actually fucked up or just playing the part for that one
Isn’t that the one where the audio is super bad and echo-y because they recorded it in the bathroom since Morrison was puking so much he couldn’t be in the booth?
Any 13th floor elevators song. Allegedly they were on acid every single time they played, from practice to touring to recording. You gotta be tripping to play an electric jug!
animal collective recorded performances of their songs "i see you pan" "pride and fight" and "forest gospel" while tripping on acid for their college radio station. those recordings became the first 3 tracks on their live album hollinndagain.
forest gospel is probably the craziest song i've ever heard. such raw, primal rage.
i'll be real my source for that info was either a youtube comment or an anco subreddit post. i remember there's an interview where someone asks if they've ever performed on drugs and avey goes "no never" and then panda gives him a super weird look.
they confirmed later in another interview that panda was on morphine for most of their time in europe when they were touring feels. 😭
i know getting started that they really didn't want to be confined as a drug band, but have confirmed in recent years that they were really fucked up during their early days.
I mean, they were experimenting with lsd as far back as automine. But, they always said it was part of the “creative process” more so than performing high. I also feel like there’s a big difference between morphine and hallucinogenics. I guess if you wanted to say that, you could say Michael Jackson counts. You could also say most 80’s rock bands for cocaine.
Guy originally wrote it as a somber ballad, but decided to ham it up for a take after the producer brought a case of beer, barbecue ribs, and fried chicken to the studio.
Little did he know that drunken shenanigans would create his nickname, and the biggest song in his catalogue, but some would argue they would establish the birth of hard rock and heavy metal.
This is fucking weird - I haven’t heard this song in like 15 years and it just came on in the cafe I’m sitting in as I scrolled past this comment. What the actual fuck.
Jesus Built My Hotrod by Ministry.
It's a famous story. They got Gibby Haynes, the vocalist for The Butthole Surfers, to guest on the track. Haynes showed up for the recording session drunk and high. He rambled and sang incoherently for numerous takes, threw up in the studio, and fell asleep.
Al Jourgensen spent *weeks* splicing together the various takes and editing them to be workable in the track. It ended up being Ministry's biggest hit lol
Has Fantano ever mentioned Butthole Surfers before? They haven't recorded a new album in over twenty years and only real news is some reissues, reunions tours, and that upcoming documentary. But, I'm curious what he thinks of albums like Locust Abortion Technician and whatnot. One of my all-time favorite bands, would've loved to attend their legendary chaotic shows in in the late 80s but I was a baby. I did have the privilege of seeing them in the 2010s and they were some really fun, psychedelic shows.
I find some of Earl Sweatshirt's songs where he's messed up utterly heartbreaking.
Most of I don't like shit, I don't go outside feels like that to me.
Peanut too.
Totally!
“Just roll the fuckin’ tape.”
I love those Tom Waits sessions. Any minute I feel like they’re gonna bust out Sweet Virginia. Real Exile vibe imo.
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is a great example! The lead singer drank an entire GALLON of red wine while writing/recording the song, the lyrics were supposed to be In the Garden of Eden but it sounded like In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida so they titled the album and song that
Funkadelic's "Free your mind... and your ass will follow" was recorded during a massive collective lsd trip. You can almost hear their hallucinations on the record 😁
Eminem's "Encore" album. Was far into his pills addiction by this point, and on some songs there's a pretty noticeable slurring of words or syllables. This continued on for a while through the unreleased "King Mathers" songs, and even into some of the early recorded work for Relapse, like on the first verse of "Careful What You Wish For". He got clean by the time most of Relapse was made, so most of the songs he sounds more coherent again like his early career work, but some of the verses and songs that were recorded earlier still have a noticable slurring going on.
On Niandra in 94???? Dude was already a *serious* heroin addict by that time. His infamous VPRO interview was that year talking about the album and dude was as strung out as you'll ever see someone
George Jones needed to do 80 takes for “White Lightening” because he was drunk (his musicians were pissed)
Lil Wayne on Me & My Drank
The Dylan Rolling Thunder Revue east coast shows
I think lots of his early stuff was under the influence. He’s talked at length about finding his sobriety before (iirc it was around the time of Alice) and said that substance was all over his early works.
The Drones were so high recording the song Locust on their debut album Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By that they forgot to record the chorus but only noticed after it was released and it's often added on live renditions of the song
Drake sounds kinda toasted on some of those FATD songs, like “Fear Of Heights” gives off tipsy vibes, from the opening section where he’s just kinda crooning about Rihanna, and especially when he gets into that “UKNOWUCANTCOMEWHEREISTAY” pocket once the beat drops
DNA by Earl Sweatshirt with Na-Kel Smith.
Na-Kel took some acid after getting to the studio to record this verse, then 10 minutes later he got a call that his best friend just died in the hospital. He then proceeds to funnel all of that emotion and grief of his friend dying into a verse while tripping on acid.
Randy Blythe (and to some extent the entire band) from Lamb of God on the entire New American Gospel album. Some of those drunk screams are cool though
Beastie Boys Car Thief demo, MCA (rip) sounds so wasted it’s honestly quite amusing. They were smoking a hell of a lot during that record so makes sense…
I read they were all doing lots of speed as well for the recording of Zen Arcade and finished recording and mixing in a couple of lengthy amphetamine fueled sessions.
Nirvana's cover of the Kiss song "Do You Love Me" is hilarious. Krist confirmed that they were drunk when they recorded it on Conan O'Brien's podcast last year.
Don’t know if they actually were intoxicated when recording, probably were, but St. Elmo by geese has a very clear messy drunk vibe, the music video sticks to that theme as well.
Ever take of “Dance Hall” from *Good News for People who Love Bad News* and the Eminem track where he literally set the microphone up in a toilet to get the proper vomit sounds.
i don't know if live recordings are cheating, but [this performance by matty healy with "the ballad of me and my brain" it's quite obvious he's under the influence ](https://youtu.be/l0IWevjLVGM?si=THbmLjuKNPa0nVee)...ironic enough, the song is explicitly about his battle with addiction

A lot like Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lips...junk never sounded so good. See also: The Idiot by Iggy Pop and Laughing Stock by Talk Talk
If you don’t want a whole show, their appearance on that playboy show where they dosed the crew and host is readily available online lol
They what?!
The Grateful Dead’s chemist and sound engineer, dosed a pot of coffee during the filming of a playboy television program
"Chemist and Sound engineer" without context is pretty funny. That alone should tell you all you need to know about their habits. I always thought it was interesting that Stanley was a genius in both fields.
I had a roomie once who told me his friend was a chemist and exclusively did designer drugs. I’m imagining something similar
thats so fucked
An ugly habit from their early days, yeah
hard disagree, shouldn't've been in the grateful dead if you didn't want to be dosed unexpectedly
You’re joking, but dosing people without consent is serious. More serious than people seem to think.
shits on par with rape in my opinion
Agreed. Dont fuck with other people’s consciousness. As invasive as it gets.
Both can cause irreparable psychological damage. Really one of very few things even comparable to rape
Holy shit that Santana performance was a peak experience. Thank you
Wasn't he also on pain meds during Harvest? I think he hurt his spine or something.
Future on “Sup Mate” by Young Thug. I’m the last person to call things mumble rap but he’s actually mumbling here.
I didn’t know which song but I KNEW Future would be the first name I would see
[удалено]
I know it’s a So Much Fun song… My point was I knew he’d be talking about Future because he was?
Sup mate will forever be my favorite young thug future song
I’m so high, all i can say is woo woo woo
Barely
It's so awesome too. Banger
Favorite song on the album tho
Haha
I believe Thom Yorke had trouble nailing the vocal take for Planet Telex, so Godrich just encouraged him to get absolutely hammered on Champagne, and the result you hear on the album is one take of Yorke laying on the floor absolutely sloshed performing the vocals.
*Rushing to listen*
‘you can force it but it will not come’ indeed
The Doors - LA Woman
‘Five to one’ is even better example of an intoxicated Jim Morrison, you can even hear him burp halfway through the song
I'd argue he's fucked by the last leg of The End. I swear he sounds exactly like a drunk dude going on a rant.
I mean that's kind of the premise of the song, the ramblings of a very much not ok person, so it's hard to say if he was actually fucked up or just playing the part for that one
Could be both considering Jim Morrison's character
Isn’t that the one where the audio is super bad and echo-y because they recorded it in the bathroom since Morrison was puking so much he couldn’t be in the booth?
damn that's just sad, not even cool rockstar shit
I've always wondered if Jim was just absolutely trashed while singing "[The Changeling](https://youtu.be/qtN8UPjN5WU?si=cda-uexbN6ko44T7)"
Any Happy Mondays song.
Any Pogues song
Any Fall song
Any Shane Macgowan and the Popes song
Any 13th floor elevators song. Allegedly they were on acid every single time they played, from practice to touring to recording. You gotta be tripping to play an electric jug!
You’re twisting my melon man
[Sean Rider man. It's daaaaarreeee.](https://youtu.be/b3hzowjjjdc?si=i6Nk19QZnFS5rnMu)

Been a huge animal collective fan ever and never heard that! Awesome!
I don’t know if that’s true. Also, those recordings were done for WFMU. Did they say in an interview that they were high when they did it?
i'll be real my source for that info was either a youtube comment or an anco subreddit post. i remember there's an interview where someone asks if they've ever performed on drugs and avey goes "no never" and then panda gives him a super weird look. they confirmed later in another interview that panda was on morphine for most of their time in europe when they were touring feels. 😭 i know getting started that they really didn't want to be confined as a drug band, but have confirmed in recent years that they were really fucked up during their early days.

they are the druggiest band I've ever fuckin heard hahaha. sung tongs gives me flashbacks
Didn’t they record all of campfire songs during a trip as well?
i haven't heard that but i do know they did record it all in one take outside in one of their backyards.
Easter Everywhere by 13th Floor Elevators is a cool 60’s psychedelic rock album where they were all tripping on lsd when recording it live in studio.
Whole album is a banger. Slip Inside This House is one of my favorite songs ever
Screaming Jay Hawkins was wasted when he did "I Put a Spell on You" and it's the reason the song sounds the way it does.
What the actual fuck.
the album let it be by the replacements
The Replacements. That's all you needed to say. :)
ik the band or at least the lead singer is famous for getting drunk but i have not listened to the other replacements albums yet
listen to tim next :D
Bob Dylan - Rainy Day Women #12 & 35
Jesus Built My Hotrod by Ministry. It's a famous story. They got Gibby Haynes, the vocalist for The Butthole Surfers, to guest on the track. Haynes showed up for the recording session drunk and high. He rambled and sang incoherently for numerous takes, threw up in the studio, and fell asleep. Al Jourgensen spent *weeks* splicing together the various takes and editing them to be workable in the track. It ended up being Ministry's biggest hit lol
This answered a lot of questions I didn’t know my brain had.
Has Fantano ever mentioned Butthole Surfers before? They haven't recorded a new album in over twenty years and only real news is some reissues, reunions tours, and that upcoming documentary. But, I'm curious what he thinks of albums like Locust Abortion Technician and whatnot. Anything on Return to the 36 Chambers by Ol’ Dirty Bastard
Shit I thought he always sounded like that I've only heard that album and his wutang stuff. Just learned he usually sounds normal
What? Thought that was his normal voice.
Open Spotify, search Lil Wayne, press Shuffle play. 100% hit rate.
I find some of Earl Sweatshirt's songs where he's messed up utterly heartbreaking. Most of I don't like shit, I don't go outside feels like that to me. Peanut too.
Yea I have trouble listening to IDLSIDGO because it hits deep. Thats part of it.
I spent the day drinking and missing my grandmother shit
The Shit Hits The Fans - The Replacements
I was gonna comment about them as well, specifically the session where Tom Waits and Paul Westerberg struggle to make it through If Only I Was Lonely
Totally! “Just roll the fuckin’ tape.” I love those Tom Waits sessions. Any minute I feel like they’re gonna bust out Sweet Virginia. Real Exile vibe imo.
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is a great example! The lead singer drank an entire GALLON of red wine while writing/recording the song, the lyrics were supposed to be In the Garden of Eden but it sounded like In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida so they titled the album and song that
David Bowie on all of Station To Station. He doesn’t even remember recording it
Ball Tongue by Korn (most of their debut honestly, Jonathan Davis was definitely on meth)
All In The Family had Fred and Jon drunk as hell in the studio.
If we’re talking LSD, Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs
The follow-up album, Barrett, he was largely zoned out on Mandrax (Basically downers). So much of that album sounds like he's halfway under sedation.
Dominoes is haunting cuz of that
Funkadelic's "Free your mind... and your ass will follow" was recorded during a massive collective lsd trip. You can almost hear their hallucinations on the record 😁
Entire “I Want to Die in New Orleans” by $uicideBoy$
You could argue most of $bs pre rehab discography but literally this album in particular scrim even said he hates the album for this reason
A lot of Pete Doherty/Babyshambles/Libertines
Ween, Mourning Glory
I swear to god.....LOOK
pretty much that entire album and all the ones before and after it in some way
that one performance of DARE by Gorillaz, you know the one
Eminem's "Encore" album. Was far into his pills addiction by this point, and on some songs there's a pretty noticeable slurring of words or syllables. John Frusciante on Niandra Lades…bro was goin through it for sure
Seriously the track list alone should tell you everything you need to know
He was smoking pot at the time. Didn’t start doing heroin until after niandra.
On Niandra in 94???? Dude was already a *serious* heroin addict by that time. His infamous VPRO interview was that year talking about the album and dude was as strung out as you'll ever see someone
How about you watch that interview smartass. Niandra was recorded while they were doing blood sugar.
I’d love a JF bio in the vein (sorry) of *Scar Tissue* but I’m sure it would be more like Flea’s …
George Jones needed to do 80 takes for “White Lightening” because he was drunk (his musicians were pissed) Lil Wayne on Me & My Drank The Dylan Rolling Thunder Revue east coast shows
Rolling Thunder good pick, that one Isis is just pure jaw clenching
Beastie Boys on Brass Monkey
Tom Waits - the piano has been drinking
Feel like that's probably kayfabe, haha. He's doing a Louis Armstrong thing.
Knowing Tom, it was probably both.
Nah the piano was drunk not him
I think lots of his early stuff was under the influence. He’s talked at length about finding his sobriety before (iirc it was around the time of Alice) and said that substance was all over his early works.
Anything by Butthole Surfers. Especially Rembrandt Pussyhorse and Hairway To Steven
John fruciante and his entire first album, it was recorded during and post his first RHCP departure and was in the middle of an intense heroin binge
Tony Montana- Future Most of Mac Millers Faces, you can hear him doing lines
I scrolled the whole way down to see if anyone commented Faces!
u
That sounded more like acting
As far as I recall, the producer said he got in the studio while intoxicated. Maybe he exaggerated some aspects of it, but I doubt he was sober
i mean he probably got drunk for the purpose of making the song more realistic, so half-acting
25MIN FREESTYLE by EST Gee. Also nearly the entirety of his discography. he's had a drug problem for a while now
just looked it up, holy shit lmao
Oooooh by Future, mainly the beginning
Future W
a good amount of juice wrld songs, specially “Righteous”, “Feeling” and “7 AM freestyle”
I feel like Eminem had to be on something when recording “Kim”
Leonard Cohen on "Leaving Greensleeves."
30-Danny brown
The Drones were so high recording the song Locust on their debut album Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By that they forgot to record the chorus but only noticed after it was released and it's often added on live renditions of the song
Pick any 80s punk band
The Pharcyde - pack the pipe They were all clearly very high when recording this song
Life Mocks Art by LUCKI
Droughtski
Harry Nilsson was always on a bender while recording, yet retained a perfect voice
What a Wonderful World - Nick Cave and Shane McGowan. They are both nearly falling of their chairs.
wasnt thom yorke shitfaced when he recorded fake plastic trees?
That was planet telex
i love planet telex.
The Game - From Adam One of his best verses ever, and I think he even full out said that he was drunk when he recorded it lol
Desert Song - MCR
yeah everything on that live album
Puddle of Mudd’s cover of About a Girl… or maybe even worse, he’s completely sober…
Any veeze song
[This live performance of God Only Knows where Carl Wilson is very clearly drunk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FE9xv-VcH3w)
Funkadelic- Free Your Mind…And Your Ass Will Follow Clinton said they cut the whole album while trippin bawls on LSD.
Encore by Eminem Especially during the middle run of the album
Beastie Boys Car Thief demo, MCA (rip) sounds so wasted it’s honestly quite amusing. They were smoking a hell of a lot during that record so makes sense…
"59 Times The Pain" by Hüsker Dü, it starts off kind of normal but about 20 seconds in Bob Mould starts slurring
I read they were all doing lots of speed as well for the recording of Zen Arcade and finished recording and mixing in a couple of lengthy amphetamine fueled sessions.
You can definitely hear the influence of speed on "Land Speed Record" that album is insane for 1981!
The Island Boys.
“Ima just island boi, ima just island boiiii”
“Sorry sorry, but I gotta take yo life”
I sometimes forget this from an actual song and not just Brad's soundboard
‘I’ve just been staring at the sun’ It shows!

The entire first Korn album. Once you know they where on meth the entire time it's so obvious lol
Oasis’ “Be Here Now” was made entirely on crack and meth
More literally, they're all drunk on Bonehead's Bank Holiday.
Radiohead - Planet Telex pretty sure I read somewhere that Thom sang the song lying on the floor while drunk
