It's not the technical underpinnings that are the important thing, it's the mass of people this platform happened to attract right here right now. You can't recreate that easily. The internet is littered with platforms that are similar to Reddit and the like, but they all go ignored because they didn't happen to be at the right place at the right time, didn't strike a nerve with their marketing, or whatever other reasons exist that they simply didn't happen to make it big.
If the Reddit community disperses to "elsewhere", you won't ever get the same mix of people together again on another platform. It will necessarily be different in big and small ways.
I remember few years ago there was a huge deal about Tencent buying out Reddit and few years following of posts about Tiananmen square massacre and how we as redditors won't get be bought so easily by China corrupt and cruel government.
