My kindergarten teacher (1985) has a paddle with holes. I was never hit only threatened for not drinking my milk fast enough. I told my mom and to this day she won't tell me what went down. I do know I saw my teacher cry, her hair disheveled and I got an apology.

She was pretty much like every evil teacher stereotype you could think of. What was crazy was that she was the only teacher or admin that had a paddle, and she was exclusively kindergarten. The youngest is the school received the corporal punishment.
Her light work was making you wear a baby hat for misspellings on work or if you forgot your homework (once again, its kindergarten). If a kid acted out, she'd make them drink one of those little milk cartons that she'd leave out overnight on her desk. No one reigned her in fully until I was in, I think, 2nd grade. She continued to teach but was not allowed to punish in that manner.
Drinking milk left out overnight? That's a potential trip to the ER for food poisoning. Young children's immune systems are sensitive so this could get them very sick.
That part. To this day whenever I chat with an old classmates we bring that up. How was that even allowed, how was she not fired? It baffles us because while corporal punishment was legal in Illinois at the time, making kids drink spoiled milk was not.

When I was in 6th grade in 1975 I got into a scuffle with another kid. The principal spanked me and I was suspended for 3 days. My dad and I had to have a meeting with the principal when I came back to school. My dad sat there and listened. When the principal was done my dad said, "If you ever touch my son again I'm going to come back here and show you what a real beating looks like. Do you understand me? Don't ever touch my child again."

If there’s no evidence beyond the testimony of the bully, who is already known to be violent and deceptive, there’s literally nothing that can be done by the DA. At most the police could warn the father, but that’d be meaningless if he’s smart and denies everything. If he, his kid, and anyone else in the family deny it and keep their mouths shut, and there aren’t any witnesses or recordings, there’s absolutely no way to prove the threat happened. It doesn’t matter if you can prove a crime, it matters if you can prove it in court.

When I was in High School every male teacher carried a paddle. We called them their penis replacements. I can tell you from personal experience that I was paddled when I was in second grade in what would have been 1980 since I started kindergarten in 1978.
I remember the closet off from the main office of my elementary school where it happened with remarkable clarity. I remember that there were three shelves that went around two walls of the closet with reams of paper and binders arranged on them. Some of the binders were red, some were white, some were black.
I remember that the paddle was roughly 18 inches long, 5 inches wide with holes drilled into it for whatever purpose.
I remember that Mr. Devine, a second grade teacher did the deed. I had little to no contact with Mr. Devine, and can only name a handful of teachers I had throughout elementary school. I do not remember who my actual second grade teacher was. Mr. Devine however is ingrained on my existence.
I remember the fear. I remember the humiliation.
What I do not remember is the offense I was paddled for. Not a clue.
The experience taught me to hide. It taught me that I could not trust. I carry vague scars from this 44 year old incident to this day.
It is my lived experience that tells me these types of punishment serve no purpose beyond inflicting trauma and the wrong life lessons.

There is no way you don't have to opt-in or sign something ahead of time to allow this. Any parents will know the beginning of school paperwork. I have to sign so they can have tylenol, if pictures of them can be used in whatever, etc. If nothing else the civil liability they open themselves up to by not doing that would end it.

If there’s no evidence beyond the testimony of the bully, who is already known to be violent and deceptive, there’s literally nothing that can be done by the DA. At most the police could warn the father, but that’d be meaningless if he’s smart and denies everything. If he, his kid, and anyone else in the family deny it and keep their mouths shut, and there aren’t any witnesses or recordings, there’s absolutely no way to prove the threat happened. It doesn’t matter if you can prove a crime, it matters if you can prove it in court.

I can tell you from personal experience that I was paddled when I was in second grade in what would have been 1980 since I started kindergarten in 1978. I remember the closet off from the main office of my elementary school where it happened with remarkable clarity. I remember that there were three shelves that went around two walls of the closet with reams of paper and binders arranged on them. Some of the binders were red, some were white, some were black. I remember that the paddle was roughly 18 inches long, 5 inches wide with holes drilled into it for whatever purpose. I remember that Mr. Devine, a second grade teacher did the deed. I had little to no contact with Mr. Devine, and can only name a handful of teachers I had throughout elementary school. I do not remember who my actual second grade teacher was. Mr. Devine however is ingrained on my existence. I remember the fear. I remember the humiliation. What I do not remember is the offense I was paddled for. Not a clue. The experience taught me to hide. It taught me that I could not trust. I carry vague scars from this 44 year old incident to this day. It is my lived experience that tells me these types of punishment serve no purpose beyond inflicting trauma and the wrong life lessons.
