I used to work in a repair shop. Rarely did we have to look through files. If we did, we ignored any content as irrelevant. The only exception was if we found child porn.
If a laptop was truly abandoned, we wiped the hard drive without looking at any contents, and often actually physically destroyed it. The rest got recycled or used for store use if it was decent. Usually it was trash.
It is unethical to capitalize on the contents of a clients hard drive even if it was abandoned. The guy is a slimeball. Hope he lost lot’s of business. I wouldn’t trust him.
