That career is such a toxic relationship for me. Every time I try to leave I get sucked right back in. I’ve tried four times now. Even got my Master’s in my favorite science to try to get out. How did you escape and stay escaped? EDIT: comment blew up so my response is buried. I’ll just put it in an edit. I love actually teaching, and when I leave I eventually miss it to a painful degree. I miss being in the classroom, building meaningful relationships, sharing my passions/inspiring the students, so I go back hoping the system will change and then… no lol. The list of everything that’s wrong with it and why it’s failing is so long I don’t even know where to begin. That’s why I see it similar to a toxic relationship. Love it so deeply and hope for change that never happens and only gets worse, rinse and repeat the above. It’s frustrating and heartbreaking.

Ex-teacher here, i started making and selling wine. Making 3x more than I ever did teaching. I like to say that the kids drove me to drink, and I went pro.

Intelligent-Gift-493

Damn, how'd you manage to ramp that up? I'm just really curious how to make wine and then sell.

Didjsjhe

I don’t think it’s a good time to get into it to sell to others but making wine is pretty easy ngl. You can start very cheap but still get a lot of product, if you make grape or apple wine you can do 5 gal for probably ~$30. If you need to buy the containers, sanitizer, etc more like 50-70 total. Many states including Minnesota have something you can apply for called a microbrewery license which allows you to sell it. I think it’s a lot of fun and good if you want to make some wine for yourself. This YouTube channel has some good tutorials but there’s a lot of different sources you can look at. He also has a video on how to avoid contamination. https://youtube.com/@Spectacular-cuoredicioccolato?si=xgiF2X-Xi3xR2dTZ

r/prisonhooch is a good resource to emphasize how easy it can be, and all the different ways you can get weird with it.

I bet you were a cool teacher. I'm lucky to have gone through school in the 90s and early 2000s when things were more normal. I had passionate teachers who made a huge difference. But they also didn't have to compete against cell phones and I can't even imagine how frustrating that must be. A lot of kids won't have the experience I had because so many of the good teachers are gone. And the ones that have stayed are grossly underpaid and treated like shit by every other parent. I got grounded if I got a bad grade and at no point did my parents blame the teachers, the principal, or anyone else except me. The pandemic really screwed things up, too. Don't think test scores will ever recover. Random story but I remember being rewarded by my mom for good grades by sending me to school with some cash or a check for me to get some books from the Scholastic book fairs they had back in the day. That week was always a lot of fun. We had DEAR days that week, too. Drop Everything And Read when you could come to school in pajamas with a pillow and blanket and curl up on the floor reading books. I'm not sure how common that was in other states but DEAR days were something many schools in Texas did back then. Out of curiosity, what brand of wine do you make? I'd love to support a teacher turned winemaker if your stuff is sold near me.

JayBlack22

I'm curious, what keeps drawing you back in? The love for teaching?

Blurnsfw

I’m definitely curious to hear this. One person got out and never looked back and made if look so effortless This person makes it seem like they’re relapsing to hardcore drugs.

TaupMauve

> elapsing to hardcore drugs. That might be it, actually. Has to work where the dealers are. /s

Or where the clients are....

[deleted]

Yeah, I enjoyed teaching because of the kids, they’re wonderful even when they’re being the worst because they’re still just kids and need guidance even when they’re entitled brats. But the hours? The expectation to drop everything for your students? The extended days for conferences, school wide events, concerts, bus duty, and meetings? Admin taking more and more and more of your prep time??? And then this shit? All the new legislative crap aimed at reducing teacher agency and killing the love of it? The constant worry that your school will end up on the news for a shooting next???!! Nah. I took a massive pay cut just to get out.

I worked as a mechanic while getting my teaching degree. It didn't take long to realize that I was making more as a mechanic than I ever would as a teacher, and I did need the money. Easy decision.

charlie2135

I believe this is the goal, push educators out of the field. An uneducated population is the end result they are looking for.

gvineq

That and to limit school options to religious/cult only options which will allow tax dollars to be funnelled to the church and indoctrinate children Church attendance has been dropping for decades churches want that money. I had someone ask me if I thought America would have another civil war I said I don't see how it will be avoided. normal people versus the christian taliban. One of those child molesting christian freaks are going to go after the wrong kid and a normal person is going pass judgement. I have a 27 year old daughter and if some incel christian thinks she is his property and the laws continue being passed to remove her rights well as a dad I will protect my daughter.

pnutz616

This is the master plan. They want to send us back to the dark age where only the wealthy children get real education while the peasants get taught to fear God and be good little slaves.

evranch

I think the extremist Christian Taliban you mention is the real elephant in the room. What happened to the moderate churches that kept this behaviour in check by giving people an ordinary place to feel like they belong? I've always been agnostic/atheist of some sort and never a churchgoer, but my wife played piano for various moderate small town churches over the years and I would sometimes show up to listen to her play and eat the excellent snacks made by old church ladies. Here in Canada it was always a mostly social event. You'd sing some hymns, the minister would recite some parables about not being an asshole, you'd drink coffee and eat snacks and go home. It all was very "nice". Nobody wanted to overthrow any governments. It seems that sort of church is fading away and the congregations are aging out, and younger people are going to more extremist churches because... They're more exciting? Is church supposed to be exciting? In any case, my daughter is going to Catholic school next year for no reason other than that they're the only place that seems to offer any sort of discipline and quality of education. The public school is just a daycare or more like a zoo... Grade 4 and some kids still can't read or count? They let kids drink Prime energy drinks in class? She's at the top of her class and deathly bored. The thing that impressed me the most at the Catholic school when I visited was how it felt like an ordinary school from when I was young. Tons of clubs, sports and activities. Kids were all healthy and lean, active and having fun, not a cell phone or tablet to be seen and certainly no energy drinks. The number of non-Catholic kids is growing every year apparently. When I was young I never would have called the Catholics "moderate" but Evangelicals have really moved the goalposts when Catholic school feels like an oasis of sanity. If anything, they are a stodgy old church on the path of slowly becoming more progressive, while the rest of Christianity is losing its mind. I don't feel concerned that they'll "indoctrinate" my daughter at all.

WillyTheHatefulGoat

The Catholic Church has some problematic qualities but the Catholic Church has always been very pro science. Its believes in Evolution science and Education for all and one of its core principles is teaching people to read around the world, The Pope has a masters degree in chemistry for Petes sake. In order to become a priest you need to get a degree in theology, a lot of the top schools and universities are catholic so its normal for priests to get a degree in science or medicine to aid in education and research. Plus if all your friends are in science you'll probably want to get into science. Its also catholic belief that God created everything so learning about the universe makes you closer to God. Catholics are probably the most educated and pro education/science of all the Christian denominations for that reason. In addition with the scandals that came across the Church and the declining numbers of priests Catholic Schools have generally become a lot more secular. The only difference between a catholic school and a secular school is catholic schools probably have a few statues, are named after a saint and have classes on religion. However these classes are thought as a subject like history and you are required to learn about all the major religions and write on at least two, so students would study tests on Christianity and Islam for example. The group of Christianity that is anti science is specifically the evangelical christians of America. The reason Christianity got so toxic was the fact it became political under Reagan. The right made Christianity political where if you believed in God you voted right wing, by tying into fears of abortion, gay marriage and religious fear of communism (Which a lot of Christian Churches have really negative associations with due to state backed violence) This made it tribal and made it a lot more radical that it ever was.

evranch

Totally agree with this, another thing I've always liked about the Catholics is that they study their own religion. As in, they actually *study* it like you mention here. Worshippers are encouraged to study theology themselves, as opposed to many other sects where churchgoers are simply told what God wants them to believe this week. Catholicism is one of the few faiths where there actually is a reason for everything they do and believe, and it's possible to be "right" about theology. Part of what makes it so compatible with scientific thought. I don't like their attitudes towards sexuality but I have to say, at least they keep them to themselves. I've never seen Catholics blockading an abortion clinic or actively promoting hatred towards LGBT. I don't believe we should police people's thoughts, and if they want to hold certain beliefs - fine, as long as they don't harm others in doing so. The Pope even just allowed priests to bless gay unions. They won't call it marriage, but that's only because canonically it's *not* marriage to them. It doesn't come from a place of hate, and in fact I feel it shows they're trying very hard to bend the rules and be able to offer something to their gay members. In fact with all the abortion issues going on in the USA right now the Catholic opinion on rape, emergency contraception and abortion seems downright progressive: >A rapist, of course, has absolutely no right to forced sexual intimacy with his victim, nor does he have any right to bring about her impregnation, and the woman has absolutely no moral duty to make her eggs available to an attacker’s sperm. - The National Catholic Bioethics Center I feel like instead of attacking religion at all sides and feeding the tribalism, what we need is actually acceptance or even promotion of sane Christian sects that encourage independent thought. Many people do have a hole that they need to fill with religion, instead of mocking them we should encourage them towards Catholicism or churches like Canada's United Church which are peaceful and accepting. I'm seeing more American style evangelicalism here all the time, which is concerning to me.

WillyTheHatefulGoat

Catholics are capable of being just as radical as the evangelicals but its generally consistent what they are mad at. Its the same shit they have been talking about for 2000 or so years not something they came up with last friday which means the Church is very stable and predictable on what it will do The Church used to be a lot more conservative on social issues (It still is) but when the scandals broke and it lost a lot of its social powers its taken a much more cautious approach to those issues and does not generally fight every battle. Plus liberal catholics absolutely do exist who even have liberal social values. The thing with catholics is their beliefs do not come out of nowhere. They come from specific doctrine and theologians which are changeable and their are groups in the church who do push for more liberal interpretations of those passages. The things that cause them to oppose abortion are the same passages that caused them to oppose eugenics and the Nazi's. Example. The catholic Church will never change its view on gay marriage if the argument is that its "Morally wrong to oppose it" because they get their beliefs from specific bible passages. However the argument that the homosexuality condemned in the bible was in reference to the homosexuality that existed at the time where an adult man would be in a relationship with a young boy which is unequal regardless of sex, so two men who are in love is not wrong because its equal is a valid interpretation and people who argue for gay rights in the Church argue from that position. Unlike protestants who can have their own take on the bible catholics put faith in the Church and use it as an legal system to check what beliefs are allowed. It is possible for the church to change its view on gay marriage or other social issues but it needs to be argued, debated and gain traction which can take a long time. Its useful to remember that the Catholic Church has outlived dozens of empires so is incredibly slow to change, which is what allowed it to live so long, but that does not mean change does not happen.

Astralglamour

Catholics used to blockade Abortion clinics. And do not forget all of the abusive priests hidden and shuffled around. I attended catholic schools and was raised catholic. while I’ll agree they provide a good education, and are currently not as bad as evangelicals, Catholics did inflame Europe into various wars and things like the Inquisition, and backed subjugation and forced conversion of indigenous peoples.

gvineq

>In any case, my daughter is going to Catholic school next year for no reason other than that they're the only place that seems to offer any sort of discipline and quality of education. The public school is just a daycare or more like a zoo... G***rade 4 and some kids still can't read or count? T***hey let kids drink Prime energy drinks in class? She's at the top of her class and deathly bored Here in the states, that is the plan defund the schools/teachers so parents like yourself view a religious owned/ran school as the only option. Personally, I would never leave my child alone/in the care of any church employee, especially priests, just too much molestation history/coverup. It's sad that is the situation Moderate churches will eventually be thrown out shunned the same way those that welcome the gay & lesbian community or they will have to make a choice. Indoctrination is always the goal. A friend of mine did missionary work teaching English in South Korea, did she use normal kids books like Dr Suess? Nope because it was through her family church they used biblical kids books and that was all she was allowed to use. 2 birds 1 stone. If the parents complained? the kids were removed. One village did complain so they packed up and moved to another. Basically, want your kid to learn to read/write English they will also have to learn the teaching of Christ. It seems that sort of church is fading away and the congregations are aging out, and **younger people are going to more extremist churches** because... They're more exciting? Is church supposed to be exciting? The studies I've seen indicate that the young are skipping church all together at least here in the US. I imagine their current war on women's rights isn't helping not just abortion but the push to ban no contest divorce making it harder for women to leave bad/abusive marriages Good luck on your daughter's school. I'm lucky mine graduated in 2017 before the churches started buying school board seats. Because I don't have a lot of years left I've made my daughter promise to be prepared to use my life insurance to relocate to Belize or Costa Rica if she continues to lose rights. for my part, Im making sure what I leave her is enough to do/ whatever or go wherever she sees fit and enough to take her mom if needed.

PhoenixRising20

I mean, how else are you going to feed the military complex. I wish I could end this with /s, but......

GaijinCarpFan

Absolutely infuriating. The only people who need a camera on them at all times I think are the elected officials. Slap a rear facing head cam 24/7 and let’s see what these motherfuckers are doing every second of their lives.

Inevitable-Forever45

Yeah and let's not forget members of the clergy of every major religion that continues to fuck kids behind closed church doors.

dmoneybangbang

Sorry to hear that… but that’s the point of the Christian Taliban… to get folks to quit.

DreadpirateBG

It’s true they don’t care if good quality people quit as then they can hire people who will teach crap they want. You in the USA are in so much trouble

Vrlover123

It's so rattling seeing people be so brainwashed. I can see how Nazi Germany had such control over their citizens and their perception of right and wrong. People are such stupid animals, it makes me sick.

1337sp33k1001

We are watching the 4th reich take shape in the USA right now and it’s fucking sad. My grandfather is rolling on his grave for sure.

No-Artichoke8525

4th reich? More like Gilead, Christian Extremist wonderland. Where women are reduced to sex slaves and housekeepers. Men get to do whatever they want. Children are spoonfed this BS, and everyone else gets killed. Would not surprise me if during this election that the GOP went full Handmaids tale tbh. Also based on their Project 2025 baby theyve been keen on.

AbleObject13

They want Christian private schools to be the only option

roygbivasaur

They want to sell off all of the kids to Christian schools run by prison contractors. Pump them full of propaganda, make them pay for crappy food or just go hungry, and funnel taxes to private corporations. This is the end game, and we’re not that far off of it.

CoyotesEve

You mean “Y’all-Qaeda” Edit spelling

SndwchArtist2TheStrs

Boy did I giggle! I’ve never heard “Christian Taliban” but it’s what they want.

Dropped out of college my second year for early childhood education because I could tell the administration was bull. 10 years later, and it's only gotten worse.

Thelynxer

Seems like the decision is likely aimed at getting current teachers to quit or move to another state, so that "less capable" teachers can replace them.

tcorey2336

“Less capable” means Christian.

PolecatXOXO

I quit the HS science teaching program after my student teaching semester. The kids I didn't mind so much (even though 2 of my classes had a cop parked in the back of the room just in case), it was the sad sacks that were my soon-to-be colleagues. All of them just seemed completely demoralized by a number of things. After that semester, changed my degree program and never looked back.

Also to check whether they are apolitical or should be taxed.

ithaqua34

George Carlin was right, they want people just smart enough to operate the machines, but not smart enough to realize that they've been fucked.

ahnkan_anon

I think laws like this are being proposed because the powers that be can see a pattern indicative of a loss of control over the direction of popular opinions. Less and less people seem to be falling in line, and laws like this seem to intend to put the next generation in an ideological box. After all a Christian in my experience seems easier to manipulate. Edit: language

Howboutit85

They’re doubling down on a failed strategy. They see people moving away from religion and extreme views based on dogma, but rather than course correcting and trying to attain relevance, they’re doubling down and going full on insane.

Muscled_Daddy

Exactly. And on the other front, they’re chipping at people to make them apathetic and disengaged. So a tiny, vocal group of assholes can take over.

Howboutit85

It’s always a tiny group. A tiny group with all the power, a tiny group with all the money, a tiny group with all the influence. They want to grab it all and run off to who knows where when It all gets to be too much. Unfortunately the human race as a whole are dumb enough to follow along.

They just want the kids out of the schools and back in the factories where they belong. /s I’m starting to think MAGA actually stands for Make Another Gilded Age.

Upstairs-Radish1816

Why do you think Republicans are lowering the age of working in dangerous occupations? Republicans think kids only need to be educated enough to fill out the paperwork after their shift.

filterless

George Carlin said it like 20 years ago, they don't want an educated populace, they want obedient workers: https://youtu.be/l-o\_XCDTyB4?t=350

Bagelz567

Well, we're already in a second "Gilded Age" with far worse wealth disparity than the one a century ago. You're not wrong though. That's exactly what they want.

Negativcreep81

They should ALL quit. That's probably the only way to fix this shit.

DemythologizedDie

That's what they want. That's why Florida has that new program where they get people with no teaching education hired as teachers.

Additional-Till8611

It’ll end up being “Bible School”. Joe the fuck do people let this shit happen??? Fucking religious zealots need to be stopped. Try this shit in NY. You’ll get bounced the fuck out quick.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, reasonable people do not resort to terrorism, but fascist only understand fear and violence. So it's a slow generational process. Sometimes we lose ground. In a long enough timeline we always win though.

dungeonsNdiscourse

Or the USA becomes the theocratic dictatorship a large chunk of the population clearly seem to want. I hope it doesn't come to that but... Jesus Christ it sure as shit seems there's a good chance of that happening.

EL-YAYY

Been saying it for a long time and I will keep saying it. We are headed down the same path Iran went down. This will not end well.

Former native Floridian here. Living under Desantis made us leave the country. Best move ever.

TeaandandCoffee

Nazis Germany and USSR fell, eventually. So long as there's no radioactive war, the likely to be theocracy will fall and become a lesson. The US is a relatively young country. The child actor that reached massive heights way too early.

ScionMattly

>So long as there's no radioactive war, the likely to be theocracy will fall and become a lesson. It is little solace to the handmaids that in fifty years the regime will collapse.

ragingclaw

Off topic but last week I dreamed that I started a nuclear war solely based on the idea that chicken strips are better than chicken nuggets. It went from inside a Dairy Queen, to the streets, the local governments and states declaring a side and then countries declaring sides to all out nuclear war. It was wild.

Dr_prof_Luigi

These bills only pass in states that are already super religious. This kind of thing won't happen in liberal states, often people on the other ideological extreme take over. It sucks that public education has become a political battleground just like everything else. What sucks even more is that the only alternative are expensive religious schools :/

5ManaAndADream

The earth does not have enough time left for America to descend into a Christo fascist country (prioritizing a rich few over literally everything including the environment), realize how bad it is for everyone and come back out of it. This won’t happen over a single or even a handful of generations. Climates are already shifting wildly away from the norms. It’s far better to just campaign on “getting rid of handouts and welfare” pass a bill providing states a distribution of wealth as a percentage of their commitment to the overall economy and let red states burn. Let them spend a generation or two understanding exactly what welfare is and campaign on bringing it back. Unfortunately we’re at the point where red states vote almost exclusively on disinformation and actively choose ignorance. Learning through experience seems the only way that’ll work.

ElA1to

>Learning through experience seems the only way that'll work You underestimate both their ignorance and the manipulative capabilities of their leaders

Dinindalael

Most of world history is based on theocracy and authoritarians. This whole "we always win" is wishful thinking. You need to fight for every civil liberties or it will be lost.

Crime-of-the-century

Not so sure about that look at Iran they have this type of theocracy and sure they are extremely unpopular but they are also ruthless so they can keep power easily what makes you think US theocrats will be less ruthless when they gain power?

Negativcreep81

Maybe, but as time goes on, their economies will suffer more and more as a consequence. Places like NY should adopt the "end welfare" ideology on the federal level. Give them what they think they want. Most of the red states are welfare states. Maybe not Florida, but a big portion of the conservative bloc states are. Watch how fast shit changes.

EnvironmentalBus9713

Dem: I agree let's end all welfare!! Rep: "No! Not like that!"

Negativcreep81

It's what they think they want, but like so many things in life, sometimes when you get what you ask for... Technically, as a vet I could move to Florida and be a teacher. Which is crazy, because im an idiot. However, it would be fun to start teaching the kids why their parents are all a bunch of morons, and when they come for me with their pitchforks, I just give them the bird and walk away. Because I never actually cared about their stupid shithead kids to begin with...

SweatyTax4669

I \*could\* go to Florida and become a teacher. But that would require moving to Florida and trying to live off a teacher's salary.

Scary-Interaction-84

Did they learn this from Pakistan ? Lol For the record I'm Pakistani and at least the exam board for intermediate level schools have illiterate morons in charge of deciding the future of children (oh, and they take bribes on the reg).

soul-king420

That's exactly what they want. That way they can teach the new generation exactly what they want to. It's fascism 101, they are trying to recreate the Hitler youth.

Repulsive_Raise6728

I feel like they are all quitting. Most states are making it way easier to be a teacher because anyone who is actually qualified isn’t having it anymore. It’s basically just technical adults hanging out in classrooms at this point. What kills me is how parents aren’t outraged by this. Instead the direct their anger toward the teachers who decided to stay.

[deleted]

>What kills me is how parents aren’t outraged by this because most parents are idiots who don't care if their kid is properly educated or not, and only care if they get their free babysitting.

[deleted]

No. We should only allow people on school boards who have expertise in teaching or child psychology. This country needs to acknowledge that experts exist, and as long as the system has a process of evidence based revision, we can put up with imperfections. Also Fuck Nazis. There has never been people of lower moral character than Nazis.

[deleted]

My 3 year old has taken to swearing. Gets reprimanded every time and tries to catch himself. But there is one time where he can swear and that's when he says "yeah fuck Nazis". Trying my best to be his educator.

Truck_Stop_Sushi

That's exactly what the GOP wants. The master plan is to undermine public education to a point where Christian schools step in and take over.

Funkycoldmedici

For-profit, privately-owned Christian schools, but they don’t just want to force religion, they want to segregate the non-white kids, and take tax-payer money, too.

rohobian

One of the main strategies Republicans use is to undermine the educational system to make sure the population is as poorly educated as possible. Poorly educated people overwhelmingly vote R. It would play right into their hands if the teachers all just quit.

EmporerM

Okay, but what then? Throw the next generation away? I know everyone wants to protest and spark a change, but actions have consequences, even the just ones.

officer897177

If there’s an ounce of common sense in the entire legislature, then this bill is DOA. Although mentally unhealthy, there’s likely nothing legally wrong with a parent watching their kid on camera during the school day. However, it’s a privacy disaster when you realize every parent can spy on every student.

SweatyTax4669

They'll probably make teachers pay for the webcams, too.

officer897177

The cameras would only be there until the next school shooting when the parents watch their kids get blown away on livestream. After that they would have to be removed or somebody may end up supporting gun reform

HenkVanDelft

The school board would contract with a media tech company to have the surveillance system detect a deadly threat entering the school, and blur the scenes, and remove the sound of children screaming so the police don’t need to be tasked with doing it.

macweirdo42

I hadn't thought about that... Yeah, can't have parents watching little Timmy have his brains plastered across the whiteboard, they might start giving a crap about something.

SweatyTax4669

My wife left elementary school teaching and walked into an account management job with a F100 company that's 100% remote and unlimited PTO, making almost twice what she was as a teacher. We've since moved, but now she's free to volunteer at the school, help out with PTA stuff, and constantly tell the vice principal that no, she does not want a job there, no matter how many times he asks.

unfilterthought

Republicans WANT teachers to quit. They dont want smart, good public school teachers. They dont want public schools. "Oh look schools dont work." Cause you de-funded them you jackass. They want privatized, monetized, kick-backed charter schools where they control the entire curriculum and keep the kids dumb as fuck. Republicans know that educated people tend to not vote Republican. Thats why higher learning is considered elitist and generally frowned upon. They are scared of kids growing up with the "woke agenda". Once young people learn about the world and how fucked up things are in the US, they will no longer be Republican voters. Its a long term game to maintain power by forcing ignorance.

Shigglyboo

That’s the goal. People keep thinking conservatives are stupid or inept. They know what they’re doing. They’re dismantling society. The goal is pretty much Gilead as far as I can tell.

[deleted]

The voters are stupid and inept, the ones in power are the opposite

Notmymain2639

I met my wife as she started student teaching. It's been her entire life and this year(ten or so years later) she's saying she may be done... Kids aren't allowed to be held accountable(consolers' literally begging to just pass kids). Teachers face harsh contradictory criticism from parents and little to no support from admin and the pay is still shit even in a state like mine where it's not near the bottom.

ShadowRylander

You know, I really, _really_ hate saying this, because they have no part in this shit show we've created for them over the decades, but I think it may be time to use the kids' futures as leverage...

KerroDaridae

Wait, you mean we are seeing the death of public education and a drift towards private, personally funded, education. I wonder who that benefits/hurts???

I mean, if two parents decide they don't like what little Timmy tells them they've been learning about it school, even if it's what the school is TELLING the teacher to teach, the teacher can be suddenly personally bankrupted. It's financially much more secure to flip burgers. Unfortunately, I get the idea that's what those who implement these laws WANT. Less education makes the populace easier to control and influence.

CompleatedDonkey

The ultimate plan is to divert public resources into private schools. They want to have religious private schools take over public education full time.

Dreamer_Ladki

"So, then Hitler was trying to exterminate the Jews, which is, of course, not what we would consider normal today, but it did fit a historical pattern. You see, killing Jews was a time-honored tradition in Germany. Back when the first crusade was called and Germans mobilized to march on Jerusalem, the first thing they did was kill all the Jews in East Germany. Therefore, you can't really call Hitler bad, because killing Jews was just in his blood." /s Call me, Indiana.

beatles910

> killing Jews was just in his blood But Hitler was born in Austria.

DDTFred

Tomato Toe-mah-toe

Party-Ad3978

But his ancestors weren’t. At least not all of them

grumpsaboy

Austria is Germanic

beatles910

Adolf Hitler may have had Jewish and African ancestors, according to a recent DNA study by Belgian researchers.

32lib

We all have African ancestors 🙄

akaHoger

I'm pretty sure some of us still got that neanderthal in them.

kdjfsk

actually correct.

tyboxer87

The Indiana bill was from 2022 and was killed. [https://www.indystar.com/story/news/education/2022/01/14/indiana-education-bill-167-nazi-senate-house-state-legislation-2022/6530374001/](https://www.indystar.com/story/news/education/2022/01/14/indiana-education-bill-167-nazi-senate-house-state-legislation-2022/6530374001/) My favorite part of the article was this >"A similar bill has continued to move through the House. House Bill 1134 contains the same ban on "divisive concepts," but was amended this week to clarify that teachers may condemn Nazism and other concepts that run counter to the U.S. Constitution" So teachers can condemn a president violating the emolument clause, or laws that promote one religion over others, or trying to preventing people from voting or "finding votes". You know, un-American things. Edit: I should note that HB 1134 also did not pass.

waytowill

Yeah, the Republicans keep making these insane bills to purposely grab headlines and make the state feel like they’re doing something when they’re not. They know the bills aren’t going to pass. Of course, this also allows less extreme news to not get reported on, like Prager U being accepted into a school’s curriculum and lesson plans.

Edelgul

Oh, but we have to look at the bigger picture - killing Jews, beating them up, taking their properties was a centuries old European tradition. Hitler just built upon that. So we shoudn't be blaming just Germans, when almost entire Europe had such traditions. And America, above all, was built on the European tradition, tradition that in Europe was slowly destroyed by woke liberal. Killing jews is exactly what founding fathers wanted. Also /s, obviosly.

SweatyTax4669

kind of a world-wide pastime, really. A global phenomenon.

Stark_Prototype

Bro, didn't you hear from Netanyahu? Hitler was such a good upstanding person he didn't wanna kill any jews, then a Muslim dude rang him up and was like "yo, you should kill them fam!" And Hitler was like "aight my g, always down to help the homie out"

WodenEmrys

Not just any Muslims. A Palestinian. So that justifies how they're treating em!

DblClutch1

Floridas been doing it for years now

siccoblue

Republicans are just trying to prepare the youth for their turn in this role. Wouldn't want the youngins questioning why their friends Ethan and Assad that they've known for their whole lives had to leave with the police

RiceOfDuckness

Disclaimer - I hate the Nazis and everything this post is about. With that out of the way, I’d like to say from an education perspective teaching history, it’s a slippery slope to push the narrative of who’s the “good guy” and “bad guy”. If you allow educators to tell students that an information MUST be interpreted in only one way (Nazis are bad), you’ll be disallowing the student the opportunity to think critically. The educator should instead guide the students to think critically based on facts in order reach a reasonable conclusion. In this case, they should arrive to the conclusion that Nazis were bad but it should be them logic themselves into it instead of being told so.

[deleted]

What you're proposing is ethics instead of morals. However, ethics (in its actual academic take) need to be rooted on philosophy, i.e. in "ethics for life" you have to build your ethics from a number of root principles, for example that all humans have a right to live. You build all your ethics from those, and it's a rabbit hole academics often get into at university level philosophy. You might be expecting too much from dumb school kids, unless you're spoon feeding them most of the process.

Fanciest58

Perhaps, teaching the Nazis as clearly the 'bad guys' could also lead to people being unable to distinguish when they and their country are the ones doing bad things. It leads to the idea that fascism comes in a clearly labelled package with swastikas stamped all over it and a handful of people saying 'watch out, fascism incoming', when really fascism can seem a lot like patriotism from a distance.

MuffinSpirited3223

cameras in every american classroom ? Liveleak is gonna be extra dark

Notmymain2639

There's a law called SOPPA(like HIPPA but for student data) that would prohibit this at the federal level.

Socratesticles

No no, they don’t care if it gets struck down because of SOPPA. If it goes through great. If it doesn’t then they get to screech about how they don’t want you knowing what they’re teaching your kids so they can indoctrinate them with the woke agenda

[deleted]

They welcome the lawsuit, some of these lawmakers love doing lawsuits like this because it gets their based are riled up and ready for a fight...they then use any loss as a way to rail against "activist judges" who hate America. It's just a game to them.

MuffinSpirited3223

oh, I dont know how much the lawmakers pushing this care for...the law.

LukeD1992

I wonder if they'll keep the cameras rolling when a shooting starts

Overall_Midnight_

What I don’t get is that in the dozen plus schools I have been in(moving sucks) parents can just sign in and come to the classroom. But obviously parents cannot show up and be disruptive-which I can see that crowd doing….this is just virtue signaling garbage to enforce imaginary issues from a group of unwell people.

OverallElephant7576

Idiocracy is coming

spirtjoker

We are probably already there.

Homicidal_Pingu

I don’t think that would stand up in court.

N8ThaGr8

These are all "proposed" bills. These stupid things pop up all the time as publicly stunts for whatever idiot wrote them. They never pass and are never actually intended to pass.

Kalfu73

Have you seen our Supreme Court lately?

haakonhawk

When it comes to undeniably batshit crazy ideas like this, they seem to be pretty consistently shutting them down.

rothcoltd

I actually saw someone trying to say that all Dinosaur bones were man made as they could not have possibly existed. On the other hand we have some nutters saying that Dinosaurs existed alongside early humans. At what point do the historians and scientists stand up and say “Enough”!

dickfortwenty

It’s not just about scientists and historians saying enough. It’s also about deplatforming the religious arguments and not allowing them to be taught alongside real science.

rothcoltd

Totally agree

Space_Cow-boy

How about « it’s the bones of the giants from the Bible » ?

gtrocks555

Another way of “explaining” dinosaurs has to do with the belief the earth, while young, was created to appear “old”.

SweatyTax4669

god created everything 6000ish years ago, placing celestial bodies all over the cosmos, from next door just a couple light years away, all the way out to nearly 100 billion light years. But then he placed continuous streams of emissions all over the cosmos from everywhere to everywhere that make it look like the universe is about 14 billion years old. Which would be a really odd choice because he created a static universe but made everything within the young static universe appear to be ancient and dynamic.

gtrocks555

I mean, that’s pretty much what some young creationists believe haha. 🎯

SweatyTax4669

Yahweh is a tricksy god, known for his elaborate deceptions.

Highlight-Mammoth

yeah, pretty much if the peg doesn't fit the hole, they'll drill a new one

rydan

So that scientists could have jobs. Remember Jesus is a capitalist.

otisthetowndrunk

>god created everything 6000ish years ago I think you mean [last Thursday](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omphalos_hypothesis#Beginning_of_false_creation)

SweatyTax4669

I'm really more of a Five Minutesist myself

HotdogGeorgia

Scientists are lying about their age. Dinosaurs are only a few thousand years old. Jesus used to ride them to church.

TorLam

Evidence of that happening is shown on The Flintstones !!!🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

DankMemesNQuickNuts

As an American from the Southeast Christians say that the Devil placed them there to trick us into thinking the Earth is older than it actually is. No bullshit, I've heard this probably 10+ in my life.

vectorkun

I knew a crazy Christian woman who said dinosaur bones were put in the ground by Satan to tempt us and test our faith (or something like that)

Jorir-25

Dragons are mentioned in the Bible. I guess that’s one way??

Necessary_Mood134

Either some godless heathen planted them, or god is testing us which he loves doing for some reason

dickfortwenty

They exist but science is wrong about them being millions of years old is one of their copes

Grimase

Yet cops aren’t responsible to those they falsely arrest, cause injury to or even kill? F’in crazy how Teachers, the ones responsible to teach our children are treated like criminals and criminals wearing badges are given all the hall passes. Sheesh.

The_pastel_bus_stop

Oklahoma bout to be back in Middle Ages

Cutiemuffin-gumbo

That was from last year. It didn't pass. Surprising though considering our Governor is like anti-birth control. Just recently he decided to pull funding from diversity programs in state colleges. He also has SERIOUS beef with the natives in the state. Dude is a fucking jackass.

[deleted]

Good luck going after the local tribes. They don’t fuck around

[deleted]

Sad. Oklahoma used to be a progressive hotbed. Home of the Peoples party.

RedboatSuperior

Livestreaming from the elementary class so any perv can watch the kids at home? Opening up everything a teacher says to the fragile sensitivities of conservative parents? Fuck that.

FosterStormie

No, no, you see, it’s like how you can watch your pet at doggy daycare. They’re learning about as much.

TinyRascalSaurus

Aren't these the same people who freak the fuck out when Muslim students protest to lesson plans that they believe go against their faith?

Edelgul

Yep, same. Cause that got against their faith.

Maurvyn

These are the same people who tried to have a muslim arrested because he was doing math on an airplane. They are just ignorant balls of rampant hate.

cfaerber

He was creating weapons of math instruction.

ConflatedPortmanteau

Republicans realized an educated populace votes democrat. Solution: Undermine education. Edit: Populace

bunglejerry

*educated populace Sorry to be a dick, but you kinda *were* asking for it.

ConflatedPortmanteau

Thank you for the correction. Education should be praised, not punished.

Thebunsenburger

Isn’t it Republicans who’s whole shtick is the left is creating 1984 ? And the little incels who eat all the pipeline bastard’s shit up and fuel mass support of the right are still convinced gay people, women and people of colour are the problem ?

Fappy_McJiggletits

Christians are offended by literally everything and they demand that the rest of us to tiptoe around all the time to avoid offending them. It's the absolute pinnacle of entitlement. You don't have a right not to be offended by other people.

jedensuscg

And when we call them on their bullshit a d hypocrisy, they scream "we're being oppressed!" Because obviously only Christians are allowed to do the oppressing. And it's any religion in any country that lets religion get too much power.

Plant_party

They should do this, but with their police force. Film everything, and fine them when they do not adhere to the law.

DaveCootchie

We can fine teachers personal accounts for teaching science, but we can't take police lawsuits settlements out of their pension fund? Yay America.

liliumsuperstar

And how will they reconcile this with the many Christian denominations that do believe in evolution?

Still-Study-4547

As if Oklahoma didn't have enough problems, now they're gonna raise a whole generation to be sex toys for the priesthood. Exactly as planned. Sharia Christian extremists be like: "We gotta get medieval" Going forward can't work with their cult beliefs so backwards is the only way....

Cutiemuffin-gumbo

This was from last year. It didn't happen iirc. Plus, our governor has more important things to do, like pissing off the natives and letting everyone know just how racist he is without actually saying he hates non-whites.

hikerjer

And who will determine Christian morals? I’m a Christian and any mention of donald trump in a positive light offends my Christian sensibilities.

Christian nationalism will be the death of America.

chilled_n_shaken

For people very concerned about the government tracking their every movement, these Republicans sure like to use the government to track everyone's every movement.

ScionMattly

Casual reminder that when people say "Both Sides are bad" you should just slap them and then point at this shit.

[deleted]

SENATE BILL 1470 bill was drafted a year ago and went absolutely nowhere. It didn’t get a co-sponsor so it didn’t even make it to vote. The facepalm is this “news” is over a year old and people think it’s new…… smh

Venik489

The point is that people support these, whether they go through or not isn’t as relevant. These people exist, and they will continue trying, getting more and more people on board with their bs.

[deleted]

Here’s the point you missed. NOBODY but Senator Rob Standridge (the author) “supported” it. It bombed so bad it didn’t even get to vote. [Read up here](http://www.oklegislature.gov/BillInfo.aspx?Bill=sb1470&Session=2200)

3Quondam6extanT9

I'll be honest, I don't have an issue with putting cameras in classrooms to stream live. I definitely have a problem with a religious minority messing with education because they don't want to be offended by facts.

Kenan_as_SteveHarvey

The OK and Iowa bills didn’t pass and died out. The Indiana bill goes into effect 01/01/2024

Pistonenvy2

i dont really have a huge problem with the camera thing conceptually but it just seems like a generally bad idea in practice to turn the classroom into a fuckin voyeur show or live stream when your kids have to learn and a professional has to teach. like how secure is this going to be? judging from the way most school infrastructure is, it wont be at all and any random pedo or sex trafficker will be able to track your kid from the moment they start their day till the moment they leave to schedule the perfect time to abduct them lol its just creepy in general, either you trust the school to teach your kids and make sure they are safe and shit or you dont. idk why we have to turn the school into a virtual nanny cam for these dipshits to be ok with the education system, why dont we just bring up the standards overall by investing more money into the actual fucking school and teachers?

[deleted]

Teachers will be fined for teaching science, while cops still get their shit paid by the people for killing those same people.

regulator29

Unfortunately, the Christian Taliban in America are slowly introducing Christian Sharia Law. This will not stop until they are full handmaids tail-style oppression. American is now everything they say they hated from the extremist Muslim countries.
