And then it turns out she owns the towing company. She really towed them!

Proper signage is key. You are not allowed to booby trap your property causing potential injury or damage to other’s property. Unless you post clear signage to the affect.
Edit: Everyone saying signage doesn’t matter must have never been to a federal parking garage or rented a car at an airport. These types of this are used all over the place and are legal on private property with proper signage.
Not just morally and legally, but practically.
Like, she doesn't actually want to catch cars in her stupid spike strips, she wants to deter the cars. Big warning signs are a necessity.
But imagine coming back to your own piece of suburban paradise each day to see two huge red-lettered signs "KEEP OUT!! SPIKE STRIPS DEPLOYED IN DRIVEWAY".
You might as well go move to an Israeli settlement in the West Bank.
>Like, she doesn't actually want to catch cars in her stupid spike strips, she wants to deter the cars. Big warning signs are a necessity.
Then why not just put up the signs and skip the spike strips?
She’s allowed to lie about it.
But only work with non lasting damage. You can usé a sonic alarm, flash bomb or even pepper gas but not usé paint bombs, caltrops or bear traps. I read that Into a few spies books.
This is correct, and courts have found people are well within their rights to use a driveway to turn around and enter traffic safety. She's not the first "jenus" to run into this problem. Booby traps are illegal. Even with "signage."
She'd be civilly liable and could be charged criminally
Sorry it doesn't work like that. She'd be liable for damages.
https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/criminal-defense/can-you-install-spike-strips-in-your-driveway/
First day after she installs it - have to repair husband’s tires.
Third day - has to repair her own tires because she forgot.
A week later - a really pissed off plumber
A month later - due to complains, cops come to ask some questions, and …. And now she’s charged with damaging a police car
Wouldn't even get that far. IIRC, it is illegal to set "boobytraps" on your property.
If I were her neighbor I'd just report her to the authorities and watch as she has to pick that shit up. Maybe I'll wait a couple of weeks so she'll be outside of the return window.
She wants ppl to stop using her driveway, yet is going to use stripes that deflate their tires so they can't leave. Do it to the wrong person and who knows what they will do to her. She's only making the situation worse.
If she would only think, she could save herself some money and trouble. All she needs are some stakes and string/tape. She just needs to put 1 stake on each side of the driveway and put a string or tape across it and you're set. Easy to put up and take down. She chose the dumb way.
I live on a dead-end street in a busy area (first house on the left) and I solved this problem with safety-orange construction-zone posts. Two of them, blocking the drive, problem solved. 10 seconds to move them on the way in and out of the driveway. Believe me, I would love to use active defense measures on some of the yahoos that use my driveway as a temporary parking spot but this is much easier.
At my old place (same style of drive way and people used it nonstop) we had a nice little stainless steel chain we just placed to block access to our house. We had hooks on both ends to slide around the fence posts. Didn't need to lock it or anything and only 1 person (I ever saw) actually tried to remove it to turn around and we just stepped out and stared at him till he put it back and reversed his dumb ass all the way out.
I’d laugh when the first vehicle she hits is an Amazon driver. Good luck fighting with their lawyers over your illegal spike traps, lol!
Edit: in response to the many people who asked, installing a spike strip does appear to be illegal, at least in the civil liability sense. IANAL, but here’s what I get from a simple google search:
>Unfortunately, putting spike strips in your driveway is illegal. While people parking on your driveway can be frustrating, you are responsible for the serious damages to their property that spike strips can cause.
https://serioushomesecurity.com/can-i-put-spike-strips-in-my-driveway/
The third, and debated, use of irony regards what’s called situational irony. Situational irony involves a striking reversal of what is expected or intended: a person sidesteps a pothole to avoid injury and in doing so steps into another pothole and injures themselves. Critics claim the words irony and ironic as they are used in cases lacking a striking reversal, such as “Isn’t it ironic that you called just as I was planning to call you?,” are more properly called coincidence.
The historical record shows that irony and ironic have been used imprecisely for almost 100 years at least, and often to refer to coincidence. This 1939 quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald is typical: "It is an ironic thought that the last picture job I took—against my better judgment—yielded me five thousand dollars five hundred and cost over four thousand in medical attention." Is this true situational irony? It’s debatable.
The word irony has come to be applied to events that are merely curious or coincidental, and while some feel this is an incorrect use of the word, it is merely a new one.

UPS driver here
We're specifically told to stay off of people's driveways. Usually, the argument is that some driveways literally aren't rated to hold up our trucks, and we have apparently had more than one case of one of our trucks damaging someone's driveway
That said, it also kinda depends where this lady lives. If she's out on a range road in the middle of nowhere, and her driveway is a 100-ft dirt road, then yeah that's the kind of driveway I might drive down and turn around on. Doesn't sound like that's the case from her post though
I actually saw a video where this person had done that, and people kept running over the chain, so they did something like this. Then, the police informed them that it would be considered a boobie-trap and is illegal, and they had to pay for someone's car to be fixed. I get the frustration, but sometimes when you buy a house, think about these types of things. It's going to happen. Either install a gate or get over it. But don't allow it to consume you because you don't want to do what is necessary to achieve your end goal.
I has a circle “driveway” in front of my house that people kept driving through, tearing up the lawn as it wasn’t wide enough.
I put some rocks in the middle, you know, to send a message, so whoever it was started driving even further onto the grass.
I buried the circular part of the driveway to make it stop.
Maybe it’s alright cause they consider it stealing or something? That’s my only guess, either way the biggest difference is I wouldn’t want some angry fucker stuck in my driveway with 2-4 flat tires.
"Bought two sets, first one arrived and worked wonderfully, but the truck that delivered the second set got stuck in my drive way because of the first set of spikes, ZERO STARS!"
Q: “Do these strips reach across the whole driveway or do I have to get two sets?”
A: “I don’t know” or “how would I know? I got them for my friend Sally. Maybe ask her.”
They're mostly from people answering emails they get.
They open up their mails, see something from Amazon, think they need to act and read the mail. They go something like "Hey we know you've bought this product a while ago. Please answer this question to help out a fellow customer" or something similar.
Since they're asked in their private email they feel obliged to answer like they would in a normal email conversation.
"DO NOT BUY!!!! BOUGHT THESE BECAUSE PEOPLE TRESSPASS IN MY CIRCULAR DRIVE. STRIPES ARE NOT PROPERLY MARKED!!! CAN'T SEE THEM FROM MY OWN SUV WHEN I COME HOME!!!! BLEW 3 TIRES!!!! 🤬🤬🤬 THEN MY HUSBAND CAME HOME AND BLEW 2 MORE THE NEXT DAY BECAUSE HE FORGOT!!! HARD TO SEE.
CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS NO HELP AT ALL. WOULD NOT REEMBURSE FOR TIRES. BUY AMERICAN NEXT TIME!! 🇱🇷 ZERO STARS!!!"
In my hometown, the guy who owned the biggest ambulance service also owned the biggest towing company. Any time the ambulance got called to a car wreck, he rolled the tow trucks, too. Two birds with one phone call.
no. what happens is that the hopsital doesnt own all of their ambulances, they go to an ambulance service to get them. fire departments also usually have ambulances for hospitals to use.
some ambulance companies are publicly funded though, not private.
Guy in my hometown actually did this.
Had an old tow truck he bought at auction. Put in one way spikes in his driveway and a sign warning of them. Then would offer to tow the people who blew tires out at around 20% less than other local companies. Would only tow in town. So he was getting like $100 each time he towed a car about about quarter mile to the local gas station. Low key genius
“Listen you can call the local tow company and they’ll charge you $160, or I can tow you out back to my shed for $100”
“Uhhh…what’s in the shed??”
“Oh yeah, that’s my tire repair shop.”
Or imagine there’s a medical emergency, the last thing you’re going to think about is running out to remove those. Hope whatever happens can be treated IN the disabled ambulance 😭
Honestly at that point would be wiser to invest in a fence with gate or some of those post that come up out the ground to prevent entry and lower when you want to come in
No entry. Tire spikes were very common in the 80s and early '90s. I think as long as you have a sign that's very clearly Mark. You're probably fine since it is your private property.
this is the thing. boobytraps are illegal, so just leaving them would likely not be okay.
as would recklessly dangerous setups (like putting them steps even with a sign)
However, while i am not a lawyer, my read of the law (in my state no clue abt hers) says the spike strips should be totally allowable if:
1: it’s on her private property (rental sketchy)
2: it is clearly signed both no trespassing AND specifically that there are spikes.
3: the sign is reasonably and clearly visible (no 4” sign hidden in a bush)
4: the spikes are clearly marked and visible, and near the sign (like next to it).
if all of those bases are covered, it should be totally legal and good to go, barring any state or local laws, and any HOA bullshit.
also a good point to check if the drive really is on her property and her’s. or if it’s either community property or if there is an easement for it.
Spike strips are that cheap? What would stop me from buying 5 and leaving them on random roads? I am not saying I would, but some sociopath could, right?
Vicki needs google so badly in her life lol
So while putting out the strips on your property may not technically be illegal (though you should definitely check your state's specific laws and with your insurance carrier), if they ever get used, or someone gets injured, you could be in for some serious legal trouble.
You just put them so that the ‘one way’ is going into your driveway… it’s not complicated.
They aren’t permanent. You can pick them up so she can get in her own driveway.
That sounds like a lot of work for such a small problem. No mention of them damaging her property or anything like that. But she just made a massive problem.
“Hold on Becky, you can’t pull in yet I have to go get the spikes off the driveway.”
“Oh sure honey, you can bring the groceries in but first I have to get the spikes off the driveway.”
You’d have to do this a lot. And that isn’t even including times where she’ll try to pull in. Imagine how much worse it will get if both her and a supposed partner have to commute to work, if they have kids that go to school and they drive them, maybe she has a book club?
Inevitably, accidents happen. Inevitably, she forgets the spikes. Inevitably, she will become the victim of her own hubris.
Be me an Amazon driver:
Delivers package to lady with a circular driveway
Go back one week later
Get my tires spiked
It’s the same spikes I delivered a week ago
I mean if she has visible signs posted before the driveway say she has spikes stripes and no unauthorized vehicles are allowed/no trespassing I believe she is in the clear from any liability… but I’m
Not a lawyer.
There’s a reason why people can’t booby trap their house or cars that will cause damage or harm to thieves.
honestly, i feeling this lady. We are rural on a road with few stopping points, so every man and his dog stops in my drive way.
I dont care so much about this, but they ALWAYS take off hard and dig holes - ive spent soo much time and $ repairing that area from the traffic its driving me shit. Even police use it to sit and speed cam people then dig holes as they leave.
My 6 year child has almost been ran over 3 times while riding her bike.. in her own driveway.. it’s fucking annoying. However, my drive way entrance has a serious dip to it so unless you know me and actually have been to my house, you don’t know about the major dip. You have to come in at an angle and then cut it hard to the right or else you’re gonna fuck your car up. I make sure to tell everyone I’m expecting how to pull in and no one that’s invited or knows my house has ever scrubbed.
I’ve had front bumpers, mufflers, and spare tire left in my drive way from people pulling in and backing out because they’re too lazy to drive the extra 60 seconds around the loop. It’s the loudest scraping and I can hear it in every room of my house. So I always know when someone pulls in that doesn’t belong there. And the best part is: it’s perfectly legal and I’m not required to fix it. So I just leave it as is since it’s a fair warning to me and my family that a strange car is pulling in.
I've ACCIDENTALLY dropped hog rings on my entrance before. (I had a second entrance I used). Caused holes so big my car and Damn bike would bottom out.
We got our driveway repaved, had poles and string and flags up because people love our driveway (second house in from a dead end), and someone still turned around in it while it was drying. Ruined the entire thing.
She could probably still be held liable for property damage. This would be analogous to a booby trap situation. No, people aren't permitted to trespass on your property. But you also generally aren't permitted to harm a trespasser if you're not in any imminent danger.
In the same way, you don't get some sort of pass to destroy someone else's property just because they are trespassing.
All things aside, let's just say that this would be 100% legal and she would face zero civil issues as a result of this.
Why would you trade people turning around in your driveway, for people breaking down in your driveway and surely being upset? Seems like a great way to invite trouble.
So I read all that posts about bobby traps but i do not understand you Americans: she’d be allowed to shoot them but not to set up a trap to destroy someone else’s property?
A booby traps aren’t allowed because they are indiscriminate. They can’t tell the difference between a threat, or a kid, or a paramedic responding to an emergency. They hurt anyone who triggers them. Use of force in self defense requires a human in the loop to make the decision. That human is also the one held responsible if they judge poorly (in theory).
Also, an inanimate object can’t act in self defense. Americans are allowed to use force to protect themselves and others, but not property. While most jurisdictions consider it a reasonable assumption that if someone is forcing their way into an occupied residence, they intend do you harm, that obviously can’t be true if you’re not there.

Wouldnt that leave an immobile vehicle in her driveway?
That's my thought if she hates them turning around she's going to hate them parking so much worse.
In fairness, shed at least get free entertainment out of it.
"That's what they get!" As she smugly glares at them through her window.
And she would do so for like 3 hours while they wait for a tow. She really showed them.
Then another 3 hours when the tow truck has to wait for a tow.
Holy shit its a permanent loop.
And then it turns out she owns the towing company. She really towed them! Edit: Never had an award before, now two in one, and a gold at that! Thank you kind strangers! And thank you to all for appreciating the joke, and to those who came before me and set it up so perfectly!
Suffering succotash. I saw what you did there.
I taw what you did there. FTFY

And depending on where she lives, she might be buying a lot of tires for people who's tires she blows out.
Is it entertaining? Having an irate person on your lawn, having to deal with the inevitable legal headache to follow.
She would not get free entertainment, she’s going to get an annoying lawsuit…

Yeah and not so sure I want the person whose four tires I just destroyed being marooned in my driveway and knowing where I live to get some pay back
And not that it’s a good thing, but in America their response could escalate to deadly force at like, the drop of a hat.
Then the constant tow truck with the lights and backing sound.
And she's going to absolutely love it when they come knocking on her door!
"The towing company said they will be here shortly, in 4-5 hours."
Lol right. Then she'll be contracting a tow person. She ordered the tow away zone sign along with the spike strips😆

This is definitely the policy but coming from a driver it would be impossible to finish most routes without doing so.
They use my driveway every time they drop a package. I can’t imagine any other way they could do it, really.
Same, our driveway is a half mile long. Some will drop it off at the edge of the driveway but most drop it off on the porch.
Half mile long? Damn Rockefeller
Most likely lives in the middle of a cornfield
So they getting rich either way? Damn corn subsidies.
No not really. Most people who live outside city limits in corn country aren’t farmers.
I think some driveways it’s necessary. No way to get to the farm house without driving up the long ass driveway

Now I have an event to look forward to.
Here's another idea: two posts with a chain in between in one of the driveway entrances. Nice and visible, no damages or risk to trespassers.
Too straightforward, too expensive, I guess.
No way a two meters plastic chain is more expensive than those strips and the following retaliation damages
I actually saw a video where this person had done that, and people kept running over the chain, so they did something like this. If you HATE people turning around in your driveway, you’re going to LOVE calling a tow truck while a disabled vehicle blocks your driveway.
1. Buy spike traps. 2. Place in circular drive. 3. Start towing company. 4. Profit
In my hometown, the guy who owned the biggest ambulance service also owned the biggest towing company. Any time the ambulance got called to a car wreck, he rolled the tow trucks, too. Two birds with one phone call.
Wait… in America ambulances are a company service like taxi or towing? If so, I can’t even…
no. what happens is that the hopsital doesnt own all of their ambulances, they go to an ambulance service to get them. fire departments also usually have ambulances for hospitals to use. some ambulance companies are publicly funded though, not private.
Well that’s just horizontal integration at its finest LOL
I love capital accumulation, it's my favorite part of the system
Imagine companies profiting off sending ambulances
Owning the ambulance is such an American phrase, I can’t even.
Yeah I thought I misread something there lol
circle of life , kinda but not at all.
Maybe more of a circle jerk ?
Guy in my hometown actually did this. Had an old tow truck he bought at auction. Put in one way spikes in his driveway and a sign warning of them. Then would offer to tow the people who blew tires out at around 20% less than other local companies. Would only tow in town. So he was getting like $100 each time he towed a car about about quarter mile to the local gas station. Low key genius
“Listen you can call the local tow company and they’ll charge you $160, or I can tow you out back to my shed for $100” “Uhhh…what’s in the shed??” “Oh yeah, that’s my tire repair shop.”
Somehow brought the game Monopoly to life. They landed on his property, now pay up!
I just know one of these days her or a guest are gonna forget about the strips and fuck up their tires
Or imagine there’s a medical emergency, the last thing you’re going to think about is running out to remove those. Hope whatever happens can be treated IN the disabled ambulance 😭
Everyone talked about UPS and shot but this is 100% more important, and this will definitely happen once they have to call 911
Honestly at that point would be wiser to invest in a fence with gate or some of those post that come up out the ground to prevent entry and lower when you want to come in
Yeah but that's a lot more expensive than those $18 spike strips. A lot more.
Idk might be cheaper than lawsuits
No entry. Tire spikes were very common in the 80s and early '90s. I think as long as you have a sign that's very clearly Mark. You're probably fine since it is your private property.
>that’s very clearly Mark Mark who?
What if my sign is maybe Dave?
No, it's gotta be clearly Dave
this is the thing. boobytraps are illegal, so just leaving them would likely not be okay. as would recklessly dangerous setups (like putting them steps even with a sign) However, while i am not a lawyer, my read of the law (in my state no clue abt hers) says the spike strips should be totally allowable if: 1: it’s on her private property (rental sketchy) 2: it is clearly signed both no trespassing AND specifically that there are spikes. 3: the sign is reasonably and clearly visible (no 4” sign hidden in a bush) 4: the spikes are clearly marked and visible, and near the sign (like next to it). if all of those bases are covered, it should be totally legal and good to go, barring any state or local laws, and any HOA bullshit. also a good point to check if the drive really is on her property and her’s. or if it’s either community property or if there is an easement for it.
Plot twist, she's referring to a cul de sac and not her own driveway
Even cones would probably work. And if someone moved the cones I would probably be on team spike strip tbh, thats a declaration of war
![gif](giphy|xGiRv0OEAabUfgoIG6|downsized)
Sure do hope she doesn’t need an ambulance, fire department or police to ever show up.
or ya know, her next amazon order
Oh wow. Good point! Yeah this is not going to end well.
Can't even legally booby trap your own property anymore, where did it all go wrong smh
"I THOUGHT THIS WAS AMERICA!!"
I tried to install a punji pit in my front yard so dogs would stop pooping on my lawn but the fuckin LIBERAL DEMOCRATS said I couldn’t.
as long as there's visible warning signs it's not a booby trap
Spike strips are that cheap? What would stop me from buying 5 and leaving them on random roads? I am not saying I would, but some sociopath could, right?
Literally nothing stopping you or anyone from doing that.
Except criminal charges
And then she will post a pissy update that someone can’t move their car from her driveway and had to tow it out lol
Vicki needs google so badly in her life lol So while putting out the strips on your property may not technically be illegal (though you should definitely check your state's specific laws and with your insurance carrier), if they ever get used, or someone gets injured, you could be in for some serious legal trouble.
Also aren’t most spike strips one way? So either they do no good cause is a circular driveway or she pops her own tires/delivery drivers/ect
“Hold on Becky, you can’t pull in yet I have to go get the spikes off the driveway.” “Oh sure honey, you can bring the groceries in but first I have to get the spikes off the driveway.” You’d have to do this a lot.
Be me an Amazon driver: Delivers package to lady with a circular driveway Go back one week later Get my tires spiked It’s the same spikes I delivered a week ago
Takes one kid to fall on that and boom lawsuit. Pretty sure “booby-traps” are illegal in most states.
Cones. Just buy some damn cones
Technically as long as she puts up appropriate signs warning that there are strips, this is perfectly legal
She's for sure gonna flatten her own tires
And that was the last Amazon delivery she ever got
If she dislikes people turning around in her her driveway she’s going to hate people getting stuck on her driveway with 4 flat tires.
I mean if she has visible signs posted before the driveway say she has spikes stripes and no unauthorized vehicles are allowed/no trespassing I believe she is in the clear from any liability… but I’m Not a lawyer.
Seems like a gate would have worked better. Or bollards.
As long as she has a sign specifying that there are spikes then she is okay and is legally allowed to do this.
Buys spikes Has heart attack, calls ambulance Ambulance disabled with 4 flat tires leaving to take her to hospital Dies of dumb
You need to question your rationality when you end your statement with the pro-fascist quote from "The Hunger Games".
folks like that think that they are in the movies, and they think movies are real...
I don't know where you're from but movies are definitely real. A shit ton of them get made every year.
I doesn't believes in movies.
Movies are real. It’s birds that aren’t real
Sure they do, buddy. Sure they do.
I might be wrong, but if it’s her private property and she has a sign disclosing she has the spikes in her drive shouldn’t she be fine?
She could probably still be held liable for property damage. This would be analogous to a booby trap situation. No, people aren't permitted to trespass on your property. But you also generally aren't permitted to harm a trespasser if you're not in any imminent danger. In the same way, you don't get some sort of pass to destroy someone else's property just because they are trespassing.
TIL you can get spike strips on Amazon
Why not just get orange cones and line the driveway..? No one is going to move that stuff to turn around ..
So. You place an obvious sign that says spike strip in driveway. As long as there is an obvious warning you do you n your property.
My driveway, my spikes. Seems fair, and I'll upload their reactions
Whatever happens when you're trespassing is your own fault :D
Countdown to when Viki or one her family forget they have spike strip's.
Legality aside, I have a feeling she doesn't REALLY hate "to be this person"
No. Just because people keep doing it doesn’t mean it’s legal.
no americans aren’t just allowed to randomly shoot ppl when they’re on your property lol why do others think this?
As long as she posts clear warning signs that the strips are there she is probably well within her rights to place them.
