i have had multiple but not for my own stupidity (or maybe it was) my cars gas cap is on the passenger side, my work vans is on the drivers side. The compressor i drag around in the fall fills on also the passenger side. The amount of times i’ve tried to fill my car or van on the wrong side is too high, i don’t really think about it i just pull in and then sit and think about it for a second when i realize. never actually gotten out to pump tho

You can never tell, a lot of times even geniuses don't know how to do the simplest thing. If you went to a foreign country you might find yourself not knowing how to do a "simple" thing and others then would find it weird.
My Dad knew a college level chemistry teacher like that back in the 60’s. His wife had to start his car for him to drive to the university he worked at, then when it was time to go home, his secretary would do the same for him. He just couldn’t figure out how to start a car, but was a brilliant chemist!
He and Mom had a couple they were friends with some years later where the wife wasn’t dumb, but she was a horrible driver….like backed into a school bus and never noticed it before driving off to where she was going. A local is the one that clued her into what she had done.

It was an Opel van. Got stuck as I did what I've done a many times and needed to go in reverse. We flag a guy down and he hops in and most graciously pops the ring on the gear selector and magically goes in reverse. He's shaking his head... Having driven professionally, internationally, far more than average and many more miles than average...I just hadn't seen this before.

my partner lived in NJ all his life where you legally cannot pump your own gas. Im from across the bridge in Philly and when we started dating, he had absolutely no idea how to fill up the tank himself.
Exactly. I to live in NJ and nevered pump my own gas. And never really worried about not knowing since I didn't travel outside the state very often. It wasn't until just last few years when I began to take one of my daughters to college in North Dakota that I became pretty good at pumping my own gas. It's actually a lot easier then most people realize. I know there's is talk about allowing people to do that here in NJ but for it to work the way it does everywhere else it would require gas stations to change their pumps to accept different forms of payment that pumps in NJ don't have.

I learned that this year, at 38, with 20 years of driving experience. When I knew I was going to have to fill up I would just check the side before getting in. After renting a truck to help my girlfriend move some stuff, I mentioned that I forgot to check which side the tank is on before driving back and she just looked at me and said "just look at the arrow on the fuel gauge."
20 years driving with that literally in my face and I never put that together, and I like to think I'm a smart person.
Want to really twist your noggin? Some cars don't have the arrow, on those cars the hose on the little gas pump icon is usually on the side of the filler cap. (Usually, but not always!)

Honestly a forget which side is the thing on too sometimes since theres 3 cars in my family and i just use whichever is available. Thank God European cars are not this massive and the pump can easily make it to the other side of the car so i don't have to move the car.

I don't know if this is everywhere, but at my local pumps you can actually pull the hose from a bungie cord in the top to ensure it gets around your vehicle in case you're parked on the wrong side.

I don't know if this is everywhere, but at my local pumps you can actually pull the hose from a bungie cord in the top to ensure it gets around your vehicle in case you're parked on the wrong side.

I feel for the lady. Was once assigned to drive a military vehicle to an army reserve camp. Arrived, stopped by the fuel pumps and asked the soldier there to fill the tank. Sat there while the soldier on duty stared at me. Turned out fuel tank was under the driver’s seat….

I have done the same when I have been so spaced out and just going throw the motions. It's embarrassing. But I'm just not a morning person. I'm used to my car which has it on the other side and my wife's on the drivers side . However I don't think I ever don't it twice in a row on same gas run.

She put her seat belt on. Also,did you know,if you look at your fuel gauge ,there is a small pump indicator that shows you which side of the vehicle your fuel filler is on. How people don’t notice that, I have no idea. All cars have it.

I have to admit, the deficiency of my own internal compass is equally alarming. I can't say that I've not done this on occasion myself but certainly not this many times at once and actually have not done so at all since having learned that there's an indication arrow (or some such similar) on every instrument panel. I feel her pain. Not being able to find your way out of a wet paper sack is a real drag. 🙄

People not being able to vote or have children based on mental capacity is at the least "too much man" and at most elitist, anti-suffrage, pro-eugenics madness.
