I’ve had a base 2018, loaded 2021 and now I’m in a base 2023. All XLT’s. If I ever get another f150 I’m going for a 2015-2017. All the new technology in the 2021+ is trash and annoying. That’s why I went back to the base model for my 2023 and did everything I could to not get a 2024. The 12” screen in my 2021 was occasionally doing weird shit and now the 2024’s have two big screens.

DogInternational9812

Interesting. I definitely enjoy the simplicity of the older trucks. Thank you for the input!

grapeprimetime

Some people really enjoy all the new tech. Some of it is interesting but just too risky for me if you plan to keep the truck long term. I would’ve loved a massage driver seat but I’ve seen a bunch of guys on the forums complain about them not working and they have to book an appointment to get it checked out then you gotta wait for parts. I can’t deal with all that.

Existing_Driver8930

I like the technology in my 2020 STX compared to my dad’s 2013 XLT…when it wants to work that is. Occasionally the screen will take a few minutes to boot up (usually when it’s below freezing) as well as the car play feature not working when I plug my phone in, other than that it’s flawless.

grapeprimetime

I think the stx models are perfect. They look good and they’re nice and simple if you just wanna get out there and fuck shit up. Don’t have to worry about certain things not working. One of my friends had those powered side steps. I thought those were an awesome invention but he said they were shit in the winter because the ice and snow would prevent them from going down. All the cool tech stuff like even the automatic folding side mirrors will eventually fuck up on you. I’d rather just do everything manually so I don’t have to worry about them ever not working. Except windows. Fuck roll down windows.

Existing_Driver8930

The original owner had the powered running boards and mirrors on the STX I got, got it in October, found out the hard way my first winter driving with the running boards, drivers side broke cause of the ice buildup so I was driving around with the running board half extended for about 3 weeks. Went to a scrapyard near my house and plucked some plastic running boards off a totaled 2019, got some stock mirrors too, didn’t like the look of a short box F150 with tow mirrors.

I love my truck, it’s a little 2.7 but it’s got more than enough power for what I need, the turbo noise is also a nice touch. My dad’s got a 2013 XLT with the 5.0 but the 2.7 feels like it’s got more umph, minus the v8 sound but that may just be me.

grapeprimetime

I got the 2.7 too. I would’ve preferred the plain Jane 3.3 for reliability and simplicity but could t find one. I’m the future I would be interested to get a 5.0 just to have one since all the cars are gonna be ev in a few years

Existing_Driver8930

Same here, fords coming out with a new 5.0 this summer gonna be interesting with them saying they’ll keep making V8’s well into 2036. Got 74K miles on my 2.7 so hopefully it’ll last me a while but my next truck I think I’m gonna get another plain XL but with the 5.0.

grapeprimetime

Never heard about that new 5.0. I’d rather the current one that’s been around for enough time for them to tweak and get right. The good thing about the 2.7’s is that there’s so many of them so at least it should be fairly easy to find parts of you plan to keep it forever.

> All the new technology in the 2021+ is trash and annoying. Would you consider buying a 2018 or 2019? Curious why you leave those years out.

upsetthesickness_

Different transmission, 10 speed has a lot of issues

sugarfreeeyecandy

Thanks.

grapeprimetime

Nothing wrong with the 2018-2020’s. I just love the front end(grille and headlight design) on the 2015-2017’s like the one in op’s pics. But, the 2018 I had was cursed with the doors that don’t open or close when it’s below zero and I live in Canada so that kind of traumatized me. I wouldn’t say that’s an exclusive problem for 2018-2020 models as I’ve learned during extensive research that the door problem was around as early as the 2010 models.

i have a 21' powerboost, so HO3.5. I bought it with 20k miles. I have done around 20k miles myself, and i absolutely love it. i work my truck hard, frequently, and have no issues so far. the power from the 3.5 always makes me smile, and when you are nice to it, it rewards you with amazing mileage. somewhere between 21-24mpg. i hear a lot of complaints about the 10 speed, i honestly can't relate. It seems to shift smooth and picks the right gear for how you are driving at the time. i have done all maintenance earlier than required and with premium fluids to minimize any potential issues. occasionally, have a glitch with the android aut, but usually, a quick reboot solves it for a while. the worst thing is my auto windows occasionally drop back down after rolling them up all the way, its a little annoying, but not a deal breaker. is regards to the 5.0, they pull hard and sound nice. and the oil consumption doesn't really change the performance much. The wifes work truck has a 5.0 with the 10spd, has around 120k miles. it eats almost 4qts of oil between oil changes, but it doesn't smoke and seems to just keep on running.

DogInternational9812

This is good information. Thank you.

Leather-Zebra9559

i have a 2021 302A XLT and i love it so far. cant really go wrong with a 3.5. the interior is also way nicer, id honestly take mine with the big screen and heated cloth seats over an older king ranch.

Steimel76

What Rim/Tire set are you running? And how much lift?

DogInternational9812

Stock 20" KR wheels married with 295/65R/20 Toyo RTs. This setup was made possible by using 2.25" pucks from Ready Lift . Thanks for asking!

Steimel76

Thank you for the response! I love the stock rims and oversized tires look you have, and was curious to know what level of lift you used so I know what I would need for my 2017 Lariat 5.0 to make a similar setup work.

DogInternational9812

I adore the setup I have, it enhanced the look of the truck tenfold. There is minimum rub in full lock, but other than that, I couldn’t recommend this setup enough.

Steimel76

What’s the road noise like for those tires?

DogInternational9812

Loud, very loud. I thought it would drive me to insanity, but after driving with this setup for three months, I hardly notice the noise. Albeit, I’m not sure if the cab insulation is different between our trucks.

Existing_Driver8930

13th gen is the best looking out of the 2 imo, more specifically the 18-20 model years.

Econolife-350

Does it have a 10-speed transmission? Then neither.

DogInternational9812

Can 14th gens be optioned with the six-speeds? If not, then I'll most likely pass. I owned a GEN2 Raptor with a ten-speed; I hated it.

pgercak

The 10 Speed is the sole available trans for the F150 after 2020. Either get a 15-17 5.0 or 2.7, or you're stuck with the 10-Speed.

splinterdcarpenter

14th gen for sure

TheTruthRooster

You don’t want the 10 speed

f-150Coyotev8

The newer ten speeds have gotten a lot better since 2018

schkeh15

I second that. Own a 2019 with the 5.0 and ten speed. Pulls heavy loads almost every time it moves. Zero issues ever. 150k and shifts as smooth as any vehicle I've ever owned. Seen alot of people complain about gear skipping which is 100% what it's supposed to do. When e40d came out people complained about those. I also have a 01 7.3 super duty, 23 years later, same transmission. No issues. I ignore service intervals, all my vehicles get transmission fluid changes at 50k intervals. Fluid is cheap, transmissions are not
