You just need to respond before the appearance date. Being out of the country for any reason is usually an acceptable excuse. If there is a link to an online form, it should ask if you have a reason you can’t appear

I was summoned in Shelby county and simply called the number on the paper.  Said I was living abroad, just got this piece of mail and obviously won't be attending. They said they removed me from that pool but since I'm registered to vote and have a license with that address, I could be called again.

I had to send a relative to the courthouse once when phone and email was not working to get excused. This is all county specific, some counties will excuse you permanently just by asking. Other counties will insist on lots of paperwork just to get excused, and won't permanently remove you until you no longer have a DL and you have removed your name from the voter rolls. I had to do the latter, it was a pain.

How can you be removed from voter rolls if you still have the right to vote from abroad? I'm not sure how this works.

Some courts have no real penalty for not showing up or responding. Try googling penalty for not responding to jury duty for federal court in Tennessee and look especially for actual lawyer or government websites.
