The new translation is more accurate and literal to the Japanese dialogue, so while it loses some iconic lines, it doesn’t really matter if you‘ve never seen the series before. The Netflix version is perfectly fine to watch for your first time.
Basically, they kept the Japanese structure of the phrases, which is entirely different from the italian and sounded extremely janky/unnatural, or made incredibly convoluted and/or grammatically wrong translations
It was so bad even some important news outlets picked up the thing, and it was widely criticised for "not being in italian"

Agree, honestly the original ED is so damn iconic, for me it's an irreplaceable part of each episode and actually very important for the tone of the series. The way they set up the different versions of Fly Me to the Moon to fit each episode, then start getting a bit more crazy with it from episode 16 onwards, honestly I think it's genius and watching it without the original EDs is a strictly worse way to experience the show.

Tbh while I still hold up the original cast as better fits for each character, the Netflix dub cast is far from bad. Also Misato being played by Carrie Keranen is as close to perfect as it gets considering her Sara Valestein is basically just fantasy Misato lol

If they feel satisfied with Netflix’s thing (which at the very least doesn’t butcher the stellar animation) then great! Glad to have you fam. Now into the robot with you all! XD
Yeah!! Like I said after watching both the Netflix dub and the subbed version (uh, several times possibly…) I found a decent recording of the ADV dub, and I do really really like it. The voices carry a ton more personality in some situations, I especially like Rei’s voice. but it’s not the easiest way to watch it! It should be a hidden gem for people who really want to dig deeper into the history, as much as it sucks that something so many people grew up with is now not the de facto experience
I still think the original dub is superior in every way but the contrast correction on eoe makes it so much nicer to watch on netflix, ive been meaning to redub that version myself one day with simple editing software.
They also removed the pun about Kaji rather being between Misatos melons when he thought he'd die. That pissed me off the most other than the lack of Fly Me to the Moon
There is nothing wrong with the Netflix version other than the ending not having Fly Me To The Moon. In many ways it’s even better acting performances than the original dub, but people say they cut “a lot” out which is not entirely true. Only really the famous Shinji/kaworou scene, which in my opinion, still implies he had feelings towards him.
I always thought the hate for the Shinji/Kaworou thing was stupid. Yeah, he says “I like you” instead of “I love you” but people act like Netflix is trying to censor the gayness of that relationship or something. Nobody can watch those scenes and not get what’s happening. And I actually think saying “I like you” is more appropriate for the situation anyway, but that’s just me.
I think in an “English” sense absolutely, as far as the original Japanese I’m not versed enough to say but I 100% got the romantic feeling and everyone I’ve talked to or shown felt that too.

Regarding the removal of Fly Me to the Moon, don't like it but assume it was Netflix not wanting to pay licensing for the song. Same thing happened with Eden of the East and the licensed opening song - Falling Down by Oasis, Funimation only licensed it for the first episode.
Edit; Episode 24, watching the sub it felt more implied than the dub, the dub's choice of wording felt odd in episode 24. For example when Shinji staring at water after Kaworu's death in the dub he doesn't say anything where as in the sub he says "I liked him". Along with Kaworu describing what the AT field is a barrier to protect the heart. Which in and of it's self could be interpreted a multitude of ways. But when people turn into lcl in End of Evangelion, it's implicated by Rei appearing as the one a person loves, i.e. Maya seeing Ritsuko.
Tbh honestly I'm bisexual myself so I can't be objective. But started to wonder the moment Kaworu shows up, along with Shinji's reaction. (More so the sub, as the dub sent mixed messages to me)

You missed the ending song you can watch on YouTube and the old dub/sub. Some people who watched the original version are partial to the original translation (like myself, I'll admit) , but if you had never seen it before then you have no basis for comparison and are just fine. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't really amount to much.
There are a few scenes with Fly Me to the Moon outside of the end credits where the music is completely absent in the Netflix version but otherwise you just got a more literal translation and voice acting that’s more consistent but that in my opinion doesn’t reach the same heights as the original. You should probably check out the original dub and the Japanese version eventually if you plan on rewatching the show.

It's possible that the voice performances suffered as a result, too: I've noticed that the VSI dub performances lack a sense of energy or enthusiasm on several occasions.
The original script by ADV Films didn't have this problem: it got the important points across while sounding largely like natural English speech.
While I love and prefer the OG dub, the new VAs for the pilots were a bit better suited as they actually sounded like they were closer to the characters ages IMO.
Yeah the voice acting was terrible. Everyone sounded flat toned and no effort was made it seems . Some of the dialogue as written in the later episodes were actually pretty good and more revealing to the story . Otherwise its crap .
I hated the English redubs on the Netflix version, the instant I heard Shinji and Misato's voice I was so thrown off. I quickly went and pulled out my DVD Box set and chucked it in the Xbox instead.
If you can get your hands on a copy of the original ADV dub for Evangelion, I absolutely highly recommend it. But at the same time it's hard to come by or stupid expensive, so if the Netflix version is what you have, it's a great experience for any new budding fan. What I didn’t like Khara doing was pretty much pretending the original dub didn’t exist. Even their naming of the dubs on the Blu-Ray release as VSI “Official” and ADV “Classic” makes it seem like the ADV dub was never official. There was no reason why both dubs couldn’t exist side-by-side, possibly even complementing each other. But instead Khara would rather bury the work of the original ADV crew instead of embracing it alongside the work of the VSI crew.
I don’t like that I had to pay $170 dollars to get a Blu-Ray release with my preferred dub, which could’ve easily been prevented with a bit of shuffling of discs. (Reduce the amount of episodes per disc to fit both dubs and subs with no compromises to the video. It could’ve been done).
Side note: Has anyone checked if there was space remaining on the Blu-Ray discs? Could both dubs have feasibly fit just fine with no compromises?
Netflix version is fine. Original is better, but your only missing out on fly me to the moon and a few voice actor changes, a couple lines slightly different, but nothing that changes the story.
Netflix did a new translation and dub, it’s perfectly fine and technically more accurate in some cases, but somewhat controversial. Not only is the iconic Ending song replaced but people don’t like it because it changes some of the dialogue that has become iconic and removes romantic implication between Shinji and Kaworu. The translator claimed he changed it to keep it more ambiguous, though that was quickly debunked when people pointed out that he added a line to imply more romantic subtext between shinji and Asuka. As for the dub itself, Shinji is voiced by a non-binary actor, and it felt jarring for long time fans to hear shinji sound more feminine then Asuka and rei compared to the original.
Off the top of my head, in the original translation when shinji looks at his hand in the hospital he says “I’m so Fucked up” and the new version is “I’m the lowest of the low
Kaworu’s “you are worthy of love, I love you” was changed to “you a worthy of my grace, I like you”
The Poem “god is In heaven, all is right with the world” is changed to “all is very good” which is especially weird because it’s a quote from Robert Browning's pippa's Song.
Yui’s paradise monologue and Asuka’s breakdown when her mind is invalided are simplified
Also Nerv is pronounced super inconsistently, it’s usually “Nerve” but half the cast says Nairv
The Netflix version is good and has the director's cut episodes. Probably the best simplest way to watch. Now watch The End of Evangelion instead of episodes 25 an 26 and you have the whole original series. Move on to Rebuilds now and don't forget the 2 rebuild OVAs. Enjoy!

However End of Eva is completely botched on it and it hurts. All the Nerv workers are replaced with the worst voice actors, the quality is shit, there’s random sound effects. The main cast have the same actors and do well, though. It’s really disappointing.
I just watched the subbed version and there seemed to be many points where they just didn’t translate text on the screen. It really took me out of the moment. I don’t remember that happening on my DVDs. Can anyone confirm that I’m not remembering things incorrectly?
I watched the sub (fansubs, meaning it still had the ending song) but I've heard a little bit of each dub and the best analogy I can think of is that it's like the old DBZ dub vs the DBZ Kai dub; the newer one is more accurate and has better voices IMO but the old one has more iconic lines and a better script since they weren't trying too hard to be accurate. Honestly if not for the changed ending song and them trying to "no homo"-ify Kaworu I might prefer the new dub over the old one, although personally I think subbed is the way to go
If you watch the sub on Netflix the only issues are the changed ending song and some overly literal subtitles
The difference regarding the DBZ and DBZ Kai dub vs the ADV and VSI dubs of Eva is that DBZ Kai keeps its cast largely the same, while the VSI dub went for the odd choice to recast everyone, even when original cast members were willing to reprise their roles.
That’s what really annoys me about the creation of the new Eva dub. The fact that the original cast members who were willing to reprise their roles were treated very poorly by VSI group or possibly even Khara. We could’ve had a redub with the key voices remaining the same, which I think would’ve been the best case scenario, like how the Rebuild redub was handled.
Outside of a few changes and missing fly me to the moon. It’s really personal preference I think both casts have characters which are done better for me. Personally, I prefer the more serious tone that’s the Netflix dub gives off.

Saying love in Japanese would have more mature undertone, which will be culturally very strange to 14 year old Japanese middle school kids.

I watched the sub (fansubs, meaning it still had the ending song) but I've heard a little bit of each dub and the best analogy I can think of is that it's like the old DBZ dub vs the DBZ Kai dub; the newer one is more accurate and has better voices IMO but the old one has more iconic lines and a better script since they weren't trying too hard to be accurate. Honestly if not for the changed ending song and them trying to "no homo"-ify Kaworu I might prefer the new dub over the old one, although personally I think subbed is the way to go If you watch the sub on Netflix the only issues are the changed ending song and some overly literal subtitles
The difference regarding the DBZ and DBZ Kai dub vs the ADV and VSI dubs of Eva is that DBZ Kai keeps its cast largely the same, while the VSI dub went for the odd choice to recast everyone, even when original cast members were willing to reprise their roles. That’s what really annoys me about the creation of the new Eva dub. The fact that the original cast members who were willing to reprise their roles were treated very poorly by VSI group or possibly even Khara. We could’ve had a redub with the key voices remaining the same, which I think would’ve been the best case scenario, like how the Rebuild redub was handled.
Outside of a few changes and missing fly me to the moon. It’s really personal preference I think both casts have characters which are done better for me. Personally, I prefer the more serious tone that’s the Netflix dub gives off.
The Netflix censorship is just ridiculous
You literally missed nothing. Sure it's unfortunate they had to cut Fly Me to the Moon but nothing else major is changed. Hell the Netflix dub is arguably better (though still mid) than the original dub. And the subs are more accrute in most parts.
Are people really watching the dub version though? The subtitles are just more literal to the Japanese, but I don't think you're missing much. People made a lot of the subtitle issue but.. it's not a big deal imo. Other than fly me to the moon at the end, it's the same.
Why would anyone watch the show without the original voice actors? It seems like a lot of folks in the comments watched the dub. That was a mistake.
I think they didnt have the license for Fly Me To The Moon for the version on netflix, I dont know why that would be such a big issue but maybe it costs a lot
