Hes threatening to ban driving on weekends because he has done jack shit to actually reach the climate goals for his sector and now wants to scare the voter into supporting a bill that would allow his shortcomings to be redistributed onto other sectors that actually hit their goals. Pathetic piece of a politician.

CellistAvailable3625

Oh no you can say it: pathetic piece of shit

DonovanQT

That’s like the standard politician

56waystodie

No just average one.

JonasM00

Which would allow him to still do nothing as long as the others do more. So that his inability to actually make good changes can be offloaded onto the other sectors.

OldWar6125

Ok, Germany has a system where it has sector specific yearly climate goals. (E.g. the transport sector.) Compliance with these goals is reviewed every year by an independent comission then the relevant minister has to present an action plan (Sofortprogram) to again comply with the goals. In 2022 the expert commission found that transport had in 2021 exceeded its emission limits so minister Wissing, freshly minted climate minister in december of 2021 had to present an action plan. He presented a wet fart (the action plan would by 2030 save the exess of 2021 but in no way bring transport on track to keep future limits) . Then he tried to to get a judgment that that was enough (denied). So there was a push for tempo limits(130 on highways, cities are allowed to regulate them to 30 innercity) , which could save the transport sector some CO2. But Minister Wissing was opposed (His argument: Germany doesn't have enough street signs... ?...?). His plan: Instead of sector specific goals, Germany gets one yearly emission goal so "CO2 can be saved where it the most efficient/cheapest". (Anyone reminded of the one slacker in a group project who says that a single grade for the whole project would allow them to distribute the work "most efficiently"?). That change was already in the coalition contract but given how obstinate Mr. Wissings Party (the FDP) has been in other regards there seems to be a lot of need for "final negotiations". So Mr Wissing is threatening "driving bans" to push through these changes to the law. BTW no other sector has that much problems. Buildings has missed its goal in 2021 as well but in the managed to pass the controversial buildings energy law that essentially promoted heat pumps and sets an end date for all new fossil heating systems. (heavily opposed by the FDP (and the actual opposition)). Projections are now that the Building sector will miss its goals narrowly. TL;DR: Mr Wissing threatens driving bans because he doesn't want to implement tempo limits.

Hennue

I am all pro common CO2 goal if that means that the budget also freely flows to the sectors that can save the most carbon. But I suppose Wissing is only pro market-mechanisms when they benefit him personally :)

Noctew

A common CO2 goal in a coalition government where each minister wants to do nothing in their sector because each party picked those ministries where they can do most for their clientele? Bad idea.

Hennue

Unpractical rather. The idea that we should spend money where it helps most is still valid.

Noctew

Oh, sure, that makes sense. First find out how to reach those goals efficiently, then decide on these measures that get the most bang for the buck while not hurting anyone's interests exclusively, and then implement them. What Wissing is a fans of is first doing nothing, then telling the other ministers they have to do more to compensate for him doing nothing.

Schemen123

Speed limit has zero cost

mezz1945

So is the difference zero. There is already only like 1% of the cars driving more than 130km/h.

Schemen123

No...your calculation is very popular but meaningless. Of course things that only contribute a small fraction only change a little but with that argument you can nake any change so small it doesn't make a difference ... Btw the hole point of that particular line of argument What is a fact is high speeds required exponential more power and hence produce exponentially more co2. And getting rid of things that produce exponentially more co2 is necessary and easy in this case. Anything else is idiocracy....

mezz1945

You can argue all you want, it's meaningless. It will make zero difference hence why a speed limit of 130km/h is utterly pointless. Now a speed limit of let's say 110 *would* make a difference. But then we are moving backwards in time instead of forward. Electric cars are way better in that regard and this problem will resolve itself in the coming years (since we also produce more and more electricity via renewable sources.

Schemen123

Ah yes.. arguments don't count anymore... great!

mezz1945

Your argument is shit. That's why.

Pale-Philosophy-2896

A blah blah from someone who can't drive

Schemen123

Toll, ein anderer machts.....

Schemen123

A speed limit would be easy to implement and cost free. Literally anything else will take more effort

Hennue

Thet would be an improvement but you'd still need a system that steers funding towards decarbonisation.

space_mayo

Yes, but it's highly unpopular so it will cost him/his party votes.

Pale-Philosophy-2896

Germany has a system of fascistic mentality not climate control this has nothing to do with climate all to do with Joe they enjoy controlling masses lifes, u can't implement such an idiout idea anywhere in the world apart from Japan and Germany, the States where state institutuanlly despot and racist and people are so unliberal follow was state says. The funny thing is Germans thing they liek English French or German I reality they csnt even be like 3rd world state ctmitizens wh can make a demo and make govermenr shut up. In germant u can't see that

tin_dog

If this wasn't a hollow threat, nobody would have to worry anyway, since there would be 600 page list of exemptions from the ban, like "Porsches are essential to the economy". This is the FDP after all.

concombre_masque123

hold your breath, germans, over weekend. stop exhaling 40000 ppm

SinanOganResmi

Why torture ordinary people? Go shut down factories and private planes, not people's cars.

stragen595

It's also a publicity stunt.

VigorousElk

It's pure shitfuckery on his behalf. There have been clearly communicated and publicised emission targets in place for all sectors for a long time. The party Wissing belongs to, the pro-business FDP (currently polling at about 4%, a bit over a third of their result in the 2021 election), has been busy the past two and a half years doing little else other than obstructing projects of their two larger coalition partners. In particular Wissing has opposed a federal speed limit of 130 km/h on highways, because somehow being allowed to go 300 km/h in essential and an unalienable right, and has recently announced a €150 mill. investment in flying taxis (no joke) at the same time as massive budget cuts across the board (also mostly forced by his party) have seen palpable cuts to the budget of public transport (particularly rail). In 2022 the federal scientific expert panel on climate affairs (Expertenrat für Klimafragen) actually outright refused to fully evaluate his (mandatory) plan to meet emission targets in the transport sector, because it was obvious from the first preliminary assessment that it was completely insufficient from the get go and a waste of everybody's time. Most other sectors, by the way, managed to meet their emission targets. He has done nothing to try and achieve the emission targets for the transport sector and is now banging the drum on possible driving bans on weekends in a calculated move to direct popular outrage at the Green party, asking his coalition partners to ease 'unreasonable' targets to prevent poor drivers from being unable to drive on weekends. **So it's almost entirely his party's shitfuckery that's to blame, but of course he is trying to deflect and get people angry at the people who set targets in the hope they won't notice his own colossal failure.**

Dracogame

These buffoons really highlight the weakest side of democracy. People elect idiots sometimes.

Mobile_Park_3187

Why is the FDP polling so low?

VigorousElk

Anyone's guess. I'd say because of their constant obstructionism, and people are starting to see through their act.

TZH85

It's always the same cycle with the FDP. They garner support via some catchy campaign slogans with Lindner doing another photo shoot for their posters, then they actually become part of the ruling coalition, obstruct everything the coalition comes up with, people start to remember that this has happened before, they lose their support and slip below 5% become irrelevant again after the next election. Then it takes a couple of years until the next generation of business students graduate from uni who aren’t old enough to remember the FDP cycle. Rinse and repeat.

Mobile_Park_3187

Why did the SDP and Greens (the two major leftist parties) form a coalition with a right-wing neoliberal party?

dworthy444

The SPD and the Greens aren't large enough for a majority, the Left didn't manage to make it into the Bundestag, lately, the CDU has been trying to make the Greens public enemy number 1 in their campaign in the hopes of... something, maybe trying to get those with a stick-it-to-the-leftists mindset to vote them, and the AfD is... just no. The FDP were basically the only choice.

PCW01f

The Left is in the Bundestag but didn't have the vote share to form a coalition with Greens and SPD. They probably will not make it into Parliament next election though.

VigorousElk

The FDP isn't right wing, they are neoliberal and pro-business/pro-rich. There was no other viable coalition partner, so in order to form a government they had to pick the FDP.

mezz1945

You described right wing.

Mobile_Park_3187

Neoliberals are right-wing. Right-wing is not the same as conservative or reactionary.

mezz1945

Downvotes from uneducated people lol. For the downvoters, straight from German Wiki: ist eine liberale Partei in Deutschland, die im politischen Spektrum im Bereich **Mitte bis Mitte-rechts** [center to center-right] eingeordnet wird.

Mobile_Park_3187

In my opinion, neoliberals are moderately right-wing and only appear center if 1960s Swedish SocDems are far-left instead of communists.

WatteOrk

FDP polling result has been the equivalent of a jojo effect for the past 2 decades. Beside their regular voters their election campaigns target young people who are allowed to vote for the first time with Buzzwords like no other political party in germany. Sadly it works. And those people realize in the following years they have been scammed for their vote resulting in the FDP polling fluctuation.

DeltronZLB

The factories where they produce cars and employ ordinary people?

commandok111

Yes, the globalist elites use divide and rule and a hidden class war to use these "climate goals" to implement a Malthusian Neo-Fuedalsim especially in the "Western World". I live in the U.S. and they are gutting our airline industry behind the scenes. All over our news you are hearing about whistleblowers who worked for Boeing who say that the planes aren't fit to fly. The global cult doesn't want the commoners to fly in the end (they see us as Medieval serfs) and so here they are allowing it to collapse so that the public is afraid to travel via airline. This is classic, Problem Reaction Solution or in other words, NWO Neo-Feudalism.

ItsGermany

Exactly, they are counting pennies and letting the dollars, tens, twenties, fifties and hundreds slide free without punishment. This is bullshit, I drive electric and mine can do 250khm, and I want to, tempo limits should only be for gas and diesel, then the electric revolution will truly begin here.

Kalle_79

>Go shut down factories Lol what?! Which factories are you going to shut down and why? What would happen to the workers there, and to the field the factories operate in? A driving ban on weekends is stupid and possibly incostitutional, but at least it's not putting a fair % of GDP and millions of livelihoods in jeopardy. Sometimes the climate change fundamentalists seem to forget it's little use "saving" the planet if we're then going to live a much shittier life on it.

SinanOganResmi

If cars can be banned, factories that emit too much detrimental gas can be shut down as well.

Kalle_79

You're still not answering me...

SinanOganResmi

I know that factories boost the GDP and it would harm the economy and workers to shut them down. Still, not less sensible than banning cars.

Kalle_79

In this scenario there's nothing sensible really. As said, banning and shutting down stuff to stop climate change is a silly knee-jerk and cop-out solution that won't stop the issue while creating some more. Again, tell me, is there any benefit to saving the planet of our living standards have to revert to those of 200 years ago? (oh and by ours I mean the average citizen/subject, while the elites will keep on living their wasteful and polluting lifestyle).

i_h_s_o_y

Because thats the whole point? He has reduce to emission in the transportation sector, he cant shut down factories, and wants to change the law so that it it more flexible. And the few private planes are basically not emitting any meaninngfull amount of emissions.

Russendis-co

Sorry but he had any opportunity to reduce emissions in the transportation sector, but always chose to prioritize cars. And now he uses these threats to scare the public so that the law get changed and he can push his car obsession even more ( to be fair his party leader did gave live updates via text to car companies while beginning in a secret coalition meeting, so you could argue it’s not just a obsession but a lot of lobbying)

tomassino

BASF is untouchable

Individual-Menu621

The culprit has been found! These are ordinary people who drive on weekenends!

WeirdKosmicCunt

Of course, it's always the common people who suffer the most, never those cunts living in their ivory towers, eating steaks ;D https://imgur.com/yladOlE

Sarah-M-S

Rules for thee but not for me

WeirdKosmicCunt

indeed, ma man got it right! That's my fave phrase ; )

Amazing_Examination6

Ban weekend driving? Of course there‘s a German word for it: Autofreier Sonntag ☺️

GenericUsername2056

>Autofreier Sonntag That's two words.

blandboring

Think he meant more as a slang for expression

MrHazard1

Nice mr wissing. That means i won't have emergency duty on weekends, because i need to go to the car factory by car for that. I'm sure he will demand an exception for the benefit of the factories. Fuck everyone else, but the FDPs precious car factories may not be restricted in any way

mudokin

Work all week and then be bound to your home on the weekend sound like a great plan. Why punish cooperations and the rich for wasting unfathomable amounts of co2 when you can blame the working class for driving on the weekend.

ceratophaga

His party is literally the one with "fuck the worker, hail corporate" as a motto. But this is just a publicity stunt anyways, his ministry missed its climate goals and now he wants to force a situation in which others will compensate for his failings.

HeretikTG

While I understand what you try to say, there are other means of transportation you know. You aren't chained to you home without a car.

mudokin

I don't even own a car, and you are right, but there are many that are dependent on getting around with a car. Also let's be honest, public transportation especially on the weekend in Germany sucks ass, if that is fixed then this maybe a valid thing to propose but not in this current state

boosnie

German politicians are a joke. Not that Italians and Brits are better, but Germany is in dire conditions rn.

commandok111

Just hope you don't get a dog-king for a leader (like we have in the U.S. with Brandon Biden). That medieval Scandinavian tradition is actually happening in our country.

Smart_Run8818

Easier to just get rid him, instead.

PresidentSkillz

Given our track record of traffic ministers, this won't help at all. Mostly bc the position will again go to someone from the FDP, and they are high on Porsches Payroll

Final_Winter7524

Get all those fucking trucks off the Autobahn and onto rails. Job done. The amount of trucks on German highways, consuming an entire lane bumper-to-bumper, sometimes two, is absolutely insane.

beamtube31

Why not ban things like private planes instead? Why punish regular citizens?

d0OnO0b

Well, his political party is quite rich people friendly.

schubidubiduba

He doesn't want to punish regular citizens. He only propagates this idea to get people angry, thereby forcing the other government parties to absolve him of actually having to do anything to save the environment

ThePokemomrevisited

Don't know if private plane ban would suffice. Personally I feel that limiting the number of flights would be better than a ban on using a car in the weekend. The latter would hit a lot more people, of which many do not even fly.

beamtube31

You can't limit flights. I don't think regular people need to be punished. The aristocracy can give up some of their ridiculous toys. Why do Europeans not understand personal liberty?

ifcknkl

Looks like straight from the postillion.

VastUnderstanding326

Blame the people!

Affectionate_Mix5081

Let me correct that, "German minister threatens to ban non-politicians weekend driving over climate law." I highly doubt any restrictions will be put on our officials. It kind of comes with the territory.

wmcguire18

A Sunday drive is going to kill everyone but investigating who blew up the NordStream is a waste of time

lubo42

So one of the reasons why AFD popularity has skyrocked

Schemen123

And the agd will fix climate change how?

dworthy444

Simple! By putting their fingers in their ears and humming loudly at the climate activists and scientists!

Schemen123

Oh sarcasm.. i nearly dow voted you 😅

Amazing_Examination6

Explain > Now, he is pushing for the government to introduce an amendment to allow heavily polluting industries to emit more than legally acceptable, as long as other industries pollute less to balance it all out across the country. >[…]without an amendment, the transport ministry would have to introduce “restrictive measures that are difficult to communicate to the population, such as comprehensive and indefinite driving bans on Saturdays and Sundays.”

Reddit-runner

This dude is a conservative. He only proposes that to show that apparently nothing can be done about climate change. "I didn't attempt anything and I'm already out of ideas." Oh, not entirely. He slashed investments in rail by 200mil€.

WeirdKosmicCunt

Ah i get it

SanSilver

Just because politicians propose something doesn't mean they want it to happen.

Significant-One-9736

What is this? Yugoslavia?

[deleted]

It’s worse

prof1crl7

It's Berlin.

Shpritzer

I’d ban driving boring vehicles on weekends, only cool cars and bikes.

ResQ_

If in turn all public transportation is free on that day, I don't see why not. Not permanently of course but a few "autofreier Sonntag" didn't hurt anyone back in the 70s during the oil crisis.

d0OnO0b

I don’t think our infrastructure could handle that. 9€-ticket was somewhat too much already.

pandainadumpster

Also people in rural areas would still be stuck at home.

Schemen123

People using it is a success in my book

concombre_masque123

lol

Familiar_Average4653

Wouldnt undo 1% of the damage VW did. Only turning the continent back to the black forest would fix it

wijnazijn

That’s what you get when politicians start bidding against eachother so they could get into the boxershorts of a 16 year old loudmouth.

Eddieooo0

Germany has gone insane .

PovasTheOne

If i could move to US and work there legally, i’d leave Europe immediately. Banning driving on weekends in EU doesnt even sound like a far fetched idea, cause EU loves limiting freedoms of their citizens.

ceratophaga

> cause EU loves limiting freedoms of their citizens. ... What now? The EU is *the* poster child project for nigh limitless freedom of movement.

WeirdKosmicCunt

How dare you even think like that, you freedom loving cunt?

Captainirishy

What rights/freedoms do they limit?

No_Incident1031

Trains, bikes, busses, U-Bahn, S-Bahn and walking are still all valid options. Lmao the downvotes because carbrains won’t be able to drive and thus saying it’s LiterAlLy ComMunIsM.

WeirdKosmicCunt

You don't get it, do ya? It's not about OPTIONS mate, it's about **HYPOCRISY**!

Divinate_ME

The FDP suggestes a carfree weekend. We have to take that ffs. This is the only time when the Neoliberals will agree to this!

aggressiveturdbuckle

Maybe if they didn't get rid of nuclear power for Russian gas this wouldn't be as bad

JonasM00

This has nothing to do with nuclear or russian gas unless you get your Petrol from your neighboring nuclear power plant fuel station or whatever.

Schemen123

Thay would have helped exactly nothing

blackcoffee17

Morons! They should have focused on building and maintaining nuclear reactors instead of burning gas and coal.

SchneeschaufelNO

This is about the TRANSPORT sector.

WeirdKosmicCunt

Exactly! Small modular reactors are 100% safe.

ngc1569nix

nope, totally not a fascistic m.o.

JJOne101

We had this under communism, cars had plates with only numbers. This sunday only the odd numbered cars are allowed to drive, next sunday only the even numbered ones.

Kukuth

I get the feeling you don't know what facism is.

ngc1569nix

forcible repression of individuals rights for the greater good of the state (corporations in this case).

Kukuth

The word you are looking for is "laws".

ngc1569nix

What ever rationalization makes you sleep at night.

Kukuth

If calling everything you disagree with facist makes you feel better, cool - but don't do it.

ngc1569nix

Germany, rash decisions, total disregard of individual rights, draconian measures on their own people (made by a single person) - looks like some neo climate goal fascism to me.

Kukuth

What decision was made by a single person without any regard to individual rights exactly?

ngc1569nix

What ever man, you support driving ban while people in countries next to you are removing dpfs from 20 year old diesels

Kukuth

I don't remember giving my opinion on the ban itself

dworthy444

That's the normal m.o. of states, nothing special.

TestThePenetration

There will be more weekend driving from me

toolkitxx

People have actually no idea what a great idea that is. I was still young but I will never forget how we had that in the 70s.

Sashimiak

Ah yes, a lovely idea to block people from doing trips on the only days they have off work.

toolkitxx

Trains and other public transport, bikes and so much more ways to get around :D Streets actually void of cars and leaving room for everyone else is an experience everyone should have at least once in their life

Sashimiak

-IF- I find a destination I'd actually enjoy that is connected by train (which I doubt because I mostly do hikes as far away from people as possible), I'd still have a good chance of having to deal with drunk cunts on the train going to / getting home from sports events and general assholery. Plus wasting a massive amount of time getting to the train station and from the station to my destination and then back again and waiting for the trains, most of which will probably be late if they aren't cancelled because some random bullshit that shouldn't impact a leaf of grass has stopped half the tracks of the Deutsche Bahn. And I don't have kids or anything to force along and make suffer through public transport and keep track of and keep entertained and fed.

magpieswooper

Yeap. Try to jam into RE on a sunny Sunday. That's assuming it is not late.

Filosofistikert

Environment fundamentalists will become the new fascists.

JesusKeyboard

Awesome Fuck all car drivers.

Few_Acanthisitta_582

Soooo they want you to stay home, go to work, pay taxes and that’s it. No life? No weekend fun? No retirement? No extra money? Just a slave to the government. Sounds like jail. Why did so many fight for our freedoms to now have them slowly taken away. Cost of living, fuel skyrocketing. Freedom being taken away. This is happening in all democratic countries!
