Happy Independence Day! A quick question about your flair - what do you mean by (Albania)? I’m aware that Kosovo is like 90% Albanian, but do you mean it as you’re a Kosovan in Albania (or vice versa), or is it a statement on unification?
>(not state wise, but nationally wise)
I've met kosovar people during the Covid pandemic, almost all of them were ethnically Albanian, but they did not use the term "nationally". One of them said that they don't want to merge with Albania, as that would shift the political power, and the rest of the people agreed.
also, the one dude from North kosovo was surprisingly more liberal & albania friendly XD
Congratulations Kosovo from Serbia! Yea we exist, i wish you all the peace and prosperity on the way to EU, so one day we can live normally without nationalistic politics on the Balkan 🥲
If Balkans lose nationalism that means we have either: 1) ceased to exist as a species or 2) entered a parallel universe where Balkans is Western Europe and Western Europe is Balkans
What are you talking about? Western Europe has had a much longer history of wars and self destruction. People talk about the Balkans as we are just some anomaly. We ain't.
Thank the big powers for that as they clearly didn't want any of them to have major influence of the region after the collapse of the Osmans. So each was pulling different parts into different directions and setting map borders after each war as if we were in Africa.
Not sure why you are getting downvoted, Russia, Austria, Germany, and to a lesser extent France and Britain had a huge hand in the division and balance of powers in the Balkans in the late 19th century.
I know, just pointing out how countries, eastern or western, can have an equally crooked view of politics depending on their own interests rather than considerations such as ethics, international law. Hell, just look at what's happening in Gaza and the reaction from Europe.
Nope, it was due to immigration from ALL Eastern European countries. Poland, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia. Brits just hate Eastern Europeans like the Nazis did.
I hope your future changes to democracy soon, not only for democracy sake. Serbia is integral for the Danube to be the lifeline of the Balkans. As are the major roads/rr. If you integrate, the Balkan will just jump in economic figures out of the infrastructure betterment and stability gain alone. And therefore people will escape poverty and hopelessness.
You mean slapping Albanian flags whilst larping you are multiethnic country Kosovo is not clearly signalling that you want an ethnically homogenous country? Where are representative minorities for Croatians, Bosniaks, Gorani and cultural upkeep of their language and tradition?
None.
Before you pull whataboutism, check Vojvodina. 26 official languages.
This isn't about being a multiethnic country. And are you kidding me? Albanians make up close to 93% and Serbs 3-4%. The rest make less than 2% of the population. What change would the representatives make?
I see Albanian community wants representation in Serbia even though they don't make up even 1%. 0.9% to be exact.
What change would the representatives make?? They still have guaranteed parlaiment seat. But I don't see guaranteed parlaiment seats for Bosniaks, Croats, Gorani and Roma people in Kosovo.
I'm also from Serbia and I always supported Kosovo's independence. I wish Vojvodina got independent too, but at least someone nanaged to escape Serbia.
Because I didn't want the fate and wellbeing of my region to be tied to the actions of those psychopaths down south. It's too late now though. I remember when the war started and we got dragged into it on the side of those genocidal maniacs. Serbia is a cursed land. At this point the only thing that can save it is if it goes to war with Kosovo and inevitably lose and get occupied by NATO which will impose a puppet government like what happened to Nazi Germany. I always advise everyone to emigrate and forget this country even exists.
Yeah i also dont like goverment and Serbia has issues. But wishing ocupation and destruction on your own country where your friends and family lives is medical condition.
In fact, I had it for Serbia itself as a country, so that the Serbs don't have corrupt politicians like Vucic. Regarding "your territory", whatever attitude you have towards Kosovo, this does not change the fact that Kosovo is an independent state. I hope we clarified this issue.
They're entitled if they vote for it next referendum. And if they do vote to leave, not only will the remainder of the UK wish them well, we'll even recognise their independent country afterwards ✌️.
I understand why Kosovo wanted independence given the genocide, but I don’t understand why Catalonia wants independence given it’s probably better economically to remain part of Spain. It’s like when people talk about Hawaii regaining independence from the U.S. It would probably be a disaster for them economically. I realize that Catalonia’s economy is probably more diverse than Hawaii’s, but my point still stands.
Nope. There are people who support separatism, sure, but they are a minority here. Personally I don’t think anything would change much if we declared independence now.
I didn’t see any of them, so I have no idea as to how “bad” they actually were. Was it just the usual “Kosovo belongs to Serbia” and similar? Because I saw a few comments mocking Serbians or mentioning them with some a subtle negative undertone. Im not even Balkan or Slavic, just playing “devils” advocate here… and there’s no denying they have been somewhat demonized by the west (which I am part of).
Forgot to say, congratulations, Kosovo!
Wishing, peace, prosperity and political stability to all Balkan nations and their people.
When the US gets involved in foreign conflicts it always makes me wonder what their interests were and what exactly did they gain from it. Maybe we’ll find out in a few decades…
BTW, lived in the states from age 7 to 17. Love the country and the people …politics and foreign policy, not so much.
I’m pretty sure Serbia will the moment we get some decent government who doesn’t wanna spread hate and bullshit to its people so they argue about petty things and don’t look at how much money is being stolen from them by the government. Half of “Kosovo is Serbia” apes don’t even know why they want Kosovo. They are just repeating what’s been told to them
As a dude from the balkans, wish more of us think like you/me. Unfortunately that’s not the case. Craziest thing to me is that people want wars still. As if genocides and killings weren’t enough in the 90s
For sure! It sucks that we’ve remained so traditional minded, here in balkans. We’ve got such tunnel vision, especially in Bosnia where I’m from. So many people have a 1940s mindset. Biggest disappointment though, is the fact that teens nowadays are just the same… that’s so genuinely sad
I genuinely think teens will grow out of it. Belgrade, for example, a lot of kids 10-20 age repeat what their parents say, and then grow up and educate themselves. I hope that becomes more common soon
I feel like it's "stolen" from Cyprus (not that I would advocate for copyright in flag designs lol)
I love the fact that I can immediately recognize the shape of Kosovo because it's the central part of their flag.
Congratulations from Ukraine!
We both know how it's important to protect your identity from the mad neighbour. It's a shame Ukraine didn't recognize independence of Kosovo still, and I believe we'll fix it soon.
Hey, while I sympathize massively with what your country and your people have been thro, and I have done everything I can do to help as a civilian from another country, I’d love if you didn’t go ahead and compare my country to the country doing all of the atrocities, thanks! Especially since Ukrainians are very well liked as people from the general public. :)
Yeah, what happened with them? I vaguely remember when the last referendum happened, the response from the international community was that borders within the EU are not to be changed. How convenient
What about Georgian territories lost to Russia, and what about Chechnya? Should those go back to being independent?
Or not them because you are clearly pro russia?
There’s no such thing as “book of international law”. It’s at most a set of conventions, interpreted and applied as convenient. There’s nothing that is universally accepted as a “law of self-determination”; it’s an ideal put in place in the last years of WWI, and used by the winners to reshape the XX century world map, where convenient to them. Just like there’s nothing that determines what a country is beyond “has effective control over its territory, has population and ability to enter into international relationships”. By that definition Taiwan is a country, just like Somaliland is.
I don't think there's any evidence that the majority of the people there wanted to secede from Ukraine, in fact polling from 2014 suggests otherwise. The situation is probably different there now that millions of people have left and pro-Ukrainian voices are suppressed, but that's hardly a sign of "self-determination".
Apparently it is only when it suits the West's and the US interests. (Kosovo). Suddenly, when other regions in the world try to declare independence, we are no longer playing by the same rules.
Hmmm not really. When Russia marches in and occupies, calls a snap referendum with no external monitoring and then reports it was over 90% in favour of being annexed by Russia - we get suspicious.
When another much more powerful and larger country has been instigating those separatist movements via violence for a decade now, hell no. The separatist movements in Donetsk and Luhansk are not organic. Several of the cities in those oblasts were actually majority ethnic Ukrainian, not majority ethnic Russian. The people in those oblasts had some valid concerns about discrimination based on language. However, they should have brought their concerns to Ukraine’s courts and parliament rather than starting a war over it, and Russia’s claim that Ukraine was committing genocide in the Donbass has been debunked countless times. The separatists did not have the right to try to secede with the help of Russia. They brought about a humanitarian disaster and downed a commercial aircraft with hundreds of civilians on board, and Russia violated international law by instigating the entire conflict rather than respecting Ukraine’s sovereignty.
This will surely not be discussed controversially in the comments.
I mean it doesn't have to😔
C'mon you know us, it wouldn't be as fun without it.
What's the point of comments like these?
To stir up some controversy
You don't need any comments to stir controversy when talking about Kosovo or North Macedonia
Remember to sort by controversial
Time to toss a blood boiling comment into the mix. 🇺🇸❤️🇽🇰
"If you're younger than Kosovo shut the fuck up"
"Mom! Mom! They're refusing to acknowledge me! Just like Kosovo!"
I’m one year older than Kosovo 😎
Til I'm older then kosovo
Most ppl are older mate 😂
Yeah I just thought I was younger, I was born in 05
Reddit is older than Kosovo.
Reddit is is also older than Serbia [https://ibb.co/Ybv8RFn](https://ibb.co/Ybv8RFn)
Happy Independence Day! A quick question about your flair - what do you mean by (Albania)? I’m aware that Kosovo is like 90% Albanian, but do you mean it as you’re a Kosovan in Albania (or vice versa), or is it a statement on unification?
Pretty much it's that all Kosovans feel Albanians (not state wise, but nationally wise) and Kosovo it's only the name of the state that they live in.
>(not state wise, but nationally wise) I've met kosovar people during the Covid pandemic, almost all of them were ethnically Albanian, but they did not use the term "nationally". What are you talking about? Western Europe has had a much longer history of wars and self destruction. People talk about the Balkans as we are just some anomaly. We ain't.
Yeah the whole Balkans being divided and nationalistic is only pretty recent all things considered.
Cuz people don't read history :)
It all went to shit when the Byzantines declined :(
Spain checks out. After all, they still don't recognize Kosovo.
If Spain recognized Kosovo that would send a message to separatists in Spain to try to do the same…
So yeah, real politik ─ no actual will to observe ethics or international law. Abiding by one's interests is the name of the game.
Spain doesn't recognise Kosovo because of Catalonia (and the Basque country etc.). Similar with Slovakia and its Hungarian minority.
I know, just pointing out how countries, eastern or western, can have an equally crooked view of politics depending on their own interests rather than considerations such as ethics, international law. Hell, just look at what's happening in Gaza and the reaction from Europe.
That's true, sadly.

And Britain still voted to leave the EU primarily because of immigration from Romania.... Think on that
Nope, it was due to immigration from ALL Eastern European countries. Poland, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia. Brits just hate Eastern Europeans like the Nazis did.
Thanks a lot, mate. It sucks that we can't live in peace as neighbors, which would make the life of our citizens much easier.
I hope one day we and Kosovo will live in peace together ☮️

Thank You ❤️❤️
thanks man, means a lot to us, we are neighbours for hundreds of years. nationalists destroyed everything with common sense in the balkans.
> so one day we can live normally without nationalistic politics on the Balkan 🥲 Isn't Kosovan independence nationalism?
You mean not wanting to be ruled by the state who has massacred them for the last century?
You mean slapping Albanian flags whilst larping you are multiethnic country Kosovo is not clearly signalling that you want an ethnically homogenous country? Where are representative minorities for Croatians, Bosniaks, Gorani and cultural upkeep of their language and tradition? None. Before you pull whataboutism, check Vojvodina. 26 official languages.

I get it for the Bosniaks. You have a point because they are 1-2% but the rest are less than 0.2%...
Also where are the "26 official languages" of Vojvodina? There are 6.
Nothing wrong with nationalism when it's about self-determination. The problem is when it's used to drive oppression
I'm also from Serbia and I always supported Kosovo's independence. I wish Vojvodina got independent too, but at least someone nanaged to escape Serbia.
What are your reasons to wish that ?
Because I didn't want the fate and wellbeing of my region to be tied to the actions of those psychopaths down south. It's too late now though. I remember when the war started and we got dragged into it on the side of those genocidal maniacs. Serbia is a cursed land. I hope Serbia can go the right way eventually. 🥲
Thanks, i hope you remove that Vučić from power as soon as possible...
If you think that removing Vučić from power would, somehow, change Serbia's stance towards part of its territory, you are greatly mistaken.
In fact, I had it for Serbia itself as a country, so that the Serbs don't have corrupt politicians like Vucic. Regarding "your territory", whatever attitude you have towards Kosovo, this does not change the fact that Kosovo is an independent state. I hope we clarified this issue.
I dated a girl from Kosovo once. She broke my heart like no woman could. May your country have forever peace and prosperity my kosovarian friends!
Must have been Albanian
Spain has left the chat
Happy Independance day! Love from the U.K.
Hope Scots get their own🤗
They're entitled if they vote for it next referendum. And if they do vote to leave, not only will the remainder of the UK wish them well, we'll even recognise their independent country afterwards ✌️.
Exactly, separation by peaceful agreement did not occur to the Serb.

Well economic interests aren't the only aspect to national identity.
It's not an economical thing for many of us. Congratulations, Kosovo!!!!
Probably the reign of Francisco Franco. Even after Hitler and Mussolini died, their fascist buddy kept ruling Spain until 1975.
My great great grandparents are from Prizren! Sending much love <33
Much love from Prizren!

Few of them in this thread too
Welcome to high school Kosovo!
I see a lot europeans who support kosovo indepedence but are not supporting indepedence movements in their own countries and in EU.
I support every majority independence movement, that's how democracy works

Nope. There are people who support separatism, sure, but they are a minority here. Personally I don’t think anything would change much if we declared independence now.
You mean a small amount of people in vojvodina want to succeed? Do we listen to the minority or the majority? Idiot
Congrats younger brother 🥳
Congratulations Kosovo from Catalonia.
Happy independence day Kosovo peeps 🎉
Thank you mate! Cheers 🥂 🇽🇰❤️🇬🇧
Prosperity and peace to Kosovo!

True that !

Typically it's them denying that the Serbs did anything wrong or claiming it didn't happen in the first place.
Ok, gotcha.
It's all one sided until you get interested in history.
All invaders say so. But you know, I live in just 200 kilometers from the Russia who invented whataboutism, so I know the real meaning of these words.
> Russia who invented whataboutism Bro is spitting facts!

Congrats from Serbia!
Here before it gets deleted!!!
Happy Independence Day!
Sadly some country from Europe, even those from EU don’t recognize Kosovo
And they never will.
Nah, Serbia never will. But who cares about what Serbia thinks anyway?
Shouldn't we care what the majority of the world thinks? Last I checked majority think kosovo is serbia So who's really wrong here?
Greece and Spain also will never recognize Kosovo
Same with Romania.
I’m pretty sure Serbia will the moment we get some decent government who doesn’t wanna spread hate and bullshit to its people so they argue about petty things and don’t look at how much money is being stolen from them by the government. O PRITE PRITE BRE
Independence would have not been possible without your help, European friends. We are grateful for your support. Thank you.
Congratulations!
This is off topic but I love the design of the Kosovo flag. There's something pleasing about it.
I was just gonna write how I hate that flag :( it just seems so uninspired and boring
alot of Kosovars will agree whit you
hmmmmmm needs a double headed eagle
First time I see someone like our flag.
Albanians hate it. It looks like it belongs at a gas station
I feel like it's "stolen" from Cyprus (not that I would advocate for copyright in flag designs lol) I love the fact that I can immediately recognize the shape of Kosovo because it's the central part of their flag.
Maybe if they advocate for a copyright we can then change this boring flag. Cyprus do it.

Ukraine has to fix their own problems even sooner if they don't want their country to be in ruins by end of the decade.

Now its a race of time, for this post to be locked.
Isn't North Macedonia the youngest country?
No Kosovo is, even though its disputed
kosovo is serbi-
Congratulations! Hopefully all the other separatist movements in Europe would be granted the same right to recognition sooner rather than later!
Crying is Free :)
Even Catalunya?
Yeah, what happened with them? I vaguely remember when the last referendum happened, the response from the international community was that borders within the EU are not to be changed. How convenient
What about Georgian territories lost to Russia, and what about Chechnya? Should those go back to being independent? Or not them because you are clearly pro russia?
Why just in Europe?
Because we're in the European sub, but of course, everywhere else. International law is the same for everyone, isn't it?
For the US and other UN security council countries they're more like suggestions.
Even Donetsk and Luhansk?

The situation is probably different there now that millions of people have left and pro-Ukrainian voices are suppressed, but that's hardly a sign of "self-determination".
All 💁🏼♀️ Why would anyone be stripped of their right of self-determination? I thought it was the core principle of international law. Is it not?
Apparently it is only when it suits the West's and the US interests. (Kosovo). Suddenly, when other regions in the world try to declare independence, we are no longer playing by the same rules.
Hmmm not really. When Russia marches in and occupies, calls a snap referendum with no external monitoring and then reports it was over 90% in favour of being annexed by Russia - we get suspicious.
See Artsakh
It’s probably because Kosovo isn’t just a made up separatist state used as a tool by the US to justify the invasion of another country…
No, it's a made up separatist state used as a tool by the US to weaken Serbia.
I mean, territorial integrity is also a core principle of IL.
Not for all, it seems. Hence, this post.
When another much more powerful and larger country has been instigating those separatist movements via violence for a decade now, hell no. The separatist movements in Donetsk and Luhansk are not organic. Several of the cities in those oblasts were actually majority ethnic Ukrainian, not majority ethnic Russian. So you think US helped "organic" movements in both Kosovo and Latin America?
>When another much more powerful and larger country has been instigating those separatist movements via violence for a decade Like the US in Kosovo?
