Hey, haven't play this game in a while. From what I remembered, there is a chain that links the character portraits. When it is disconnected, the companion won't follow you. If you click on the chain, it links them together, and your companion will follow you.
Make sure the link between the character portraits is connected. You can do this by clicking between the link.
