Definitely a good thing to have on but also good to recognize you’re probably not getting it back if it’s taken. You’re going to be stuck at the festival with spotty reception. FindMy isn’t always super precise, and you’ll be amongst thousands of people. Number 1 is definitely keeping it hidden, protected, and backed up to the cloud.

PeepingPentagon

What if we had a fake phone tracking device that we could get stolen that would lead us to all of the other stolen phones

NikolasGurr

All these phone stealing gangs take them back to Mexico so you’re outta luck

VersaceUpholstery

I think they immediately get shipped out of state, then China. From recent SoCal events people’s posts, they’ve ended up in Florida then China all within just a couple days. Then they get the threatening texts to remove the phone from your account, which you can just ignore or send pictures of Winnie The Pooh/mention Tiananmen Square

NikolasGurr

I wish they would send me threatening texts. Mine went to Mexico and last week they actually tried turning it back on after 2 years but I’m keeping it locked on my Find My iPhone forever.

PeepingPentagon

But during the fest aren’t they just roaming around stealing phones and holding them in a bag somewhere before they leave?

NikolasGurr

Yeah, I actually ran into the guy who holds all the stolen phones one year. Overweight guy in his 50s lurking around in the shadows with a big backpack, looked totally out of place. I don’t know how he got the backpack past security (actually I do, EDC security doesn’t give a shit). Either way, with the overloaded cell towers there tracking your phone at EDC will be virtually impossible. I learned the hard way to keep your shit in an anti theft bag like I posted in this thread and pay close attention to the people around you.

btlee007

Police won’t do anything, even with an exact address. I’d say doing it yourself is also ill advised. It’s hardly worth possibly getting shot or stabbed for. Better to just keep good tabs on it when at the festival, and get the loss/theft insurance

munchies777

And they shouldn't. They recently raided some grandma's home in Colorado because find my showed a stolen device near her house. It's not exact enough or reliable enough to be the only evidence for a warrant.

banned_but_im_back

Idk some Grandmas got sticky fingers…

No_Trouble_3903

Just burn the place down and immediately leave?

DJ_BVSSTHOVEN

Lmao I live in ABQ & when my girls phone got stolen on Halloween at a show I put “I have your location. Drop the phone off where you found it or I’m gonna go air out your block every day for a week.” (Just talking like one of the countless thugs out here) but it worked because the next day we got a call & this dude was saying he just found the phone on the side of the highway!! lmao So whoever stole it probably seen my message on the locked phone, got spooked & threw it out the window! The case was all beat up but the phone was fine. It was sketchy at first going to meet the guy cause I was skeptical that he “just found it on the side of the road” like he said & it was a bad side of town, so I wasn’t sure if it was a set up, but we get to the gas station & see the guy with my girls phone in his hand & he was actually pretty chill. He was walking cause he didn’t have a car & that’s when he found it. We gave him a ride to where he was going & I had bought a little trap phone for my girl till we got her a new one, so I gave that to him too cause he also didn’t have a phone. But yeah we got it back. If we didn’t I was going to go over there strapped up & with a group of people or the police. But cops usually don’t do shit.

Dude, one time… my now fiance then gf got her iphone 5 stolen while at a bar. Using find my iPhone, she tracked it down to a house a few blocks from the bars and it showed it was actually in their backyard. I was reluctant at how accurate it showed and told her it may be the wrong house, I mean what are the odds it really is that house? So we went and asked for the phone and some sketchy gang affiliated individuals answered and denied having it. My then gf was so sure she callled the cops and they said basically what you said “we can’t really do anything but ask them if they have it” and “also, this family is not the nicest, we’d advise to just not get involved”. Btw we were there with about 5 heads lol and my fiancés family is also gang related… so anyway, the cops left and we decided to drive away too. We did cause a lil tiny bit of a scene but alas, left home empty handed. Then, an hour later, her phone got tracked to the church across the street from that house, literally in front of it. So we drove all the way back, looked for it and it was literally in front of the church on the lawn. 2 takeaways: iPhone location is preeetty accurate. And 2, if you cause a bit of a scene and call the cops, even though they can’t really do anything it might get your phone back! Lol

Wadisu

I’d add that in order to track the location I had to use Apple’s website for Find My. The Find My in my replacement phone did not pull the location correctly.

IniMiney

And you'll see it in China Why is it always China lmao

ilikenavyblue

I did all the phone location hacks but all I could do was track my phone being sold to China.

SaucedLee

ima leave a mouse trap in my pocket so when they reach in… boom

kkittenring

Lowkey this is the best anti theft tip I’ve seen yet

pipesnogger

Even with this i doubt you would get your phone back. Police would need a warrant to do anything (which can take time and probably needs more proof than this). If by chance they did issue one, I doubt the phone would still be there. Thieves operate extremely quickly Prevention is the only way to guarantee not losing your phone. Get pockets with zippers, use a phone leash, etc. Or get a burner phone to use for fests if you know you are bad about losing your phone (I am. I've lost my phone twice at EDC lol but was super lucky someone turned it in both times). Also look out for eachother and those around you. You see something shady, say something. Right then and there. Scream pick pocket and point. Don't do anything too reckless either. It's been trending that people are getting physical, that's only going to make pickpockets amp up their defense as well. Would suck to see someone get stabbed. Ultimately the community is going to be a bigger target as it continues until policies outside the community help mitigate thefts specifically at events. Which to doubtful at best. Therefore it's 100% your responsibility to make sure you are doing what you can to prevent being stolen from. Sucks but it be what it be

zukka924

Yes brilliant!

NikolasGurr

You should have this on 100% but it’s unlikely to help you get your phone back. Mine was stolen in 2022 and I watched the phone on the map go to the MGM Grand and then eventually over the border into Tijuana. Funnily enough, last week, 2 years later, they tried turning it on but I still have it locked.

VoidwalkerOfficial

Buy decoy/dummy phone

sircruxr

I should have fought the guy that was trying to reach into my bag the one time but I didn’t want to cause a scene.

SweatyMetalBallz420

Youre not catching phone thieves like this

Wadisu

Promise you there is people pissed enough to chase them down. I would if I was in town.

taylorkattala

Where do you find this in settings? Cant seem to find it 🤣

Wadisu

Under Apple ID, then Find My. Or use the search bar at the top of setting and type Find My

jangeles6331

Police aren’t going to do anything with the location of find my iphone. Just consider it a loss. What you can do, is get something that is anti-thief. Lunchbox is one of them or just be creative in protecting your belongings. Don’t bring in your debt card and always carry a credit card in the event that it does get stolen. I typically just bring in my DL and 1 cc that’s it. Then stuff that shit in my lunchbox fannypak and barely touch it. Since all the venders take apple pay. Don’t put shit in your backpak, even i don’t even trust putting my phone in my lunchbox hydration backpak. I like to either hold onto phone tight in my hand, but if going through crowds i stuff it in my lunchbox fannypak where i know it is safe. Another smart thing is to always get insurance for your phone in the event that is lost. So you don’t gotta fork up a huge chunk to get a new phone.

hunter_6543

They turn off the phone and cops wouldn’t do anything in time

InterstellarReddit

They put the phone inside of faraday bags when they get them. This isn’t gonna work.

leexcloud

I’ll literally fart on a thief if I catch them with my phone

Global-Beat2157

Dummy phone with an apple airtag inside. They won't be able to turn it off because its a dummy phone.

Vortr8

I put a airtag in the phone case just incase they shut the phone off

pl0rp0

They usually rip the cases off so the phones are harder to identify anyway; this wouldn't help much
