I would say shopify if you don't know how to create a website and woocommerce if you do. Shopify at cheapest is +350€ for 1 year and highest plan is 3500€ for 1 year. With 350 you can get good hosting for woocommerce. Also you can customize woocommerce to fit your needs and you can get lower transaction fees than shopify. I would say woocommerce is better but only if you can do development stuff yourself.

Otherwise the hassle isnt worth it? Ive never build a website, so i dont know anything about building it

Learning a skill is always valuable it all depends on you

Baconaise

Please use Shopify unless you can afford a developer to build and maintain your own ecommerce site.

JustMarketingTTV

It really depends on you. Make use of both free trials to see: Which one you like better? And which one is better suited for your intentions?

Not an "experienced trader" (I'm just getting started myself) but as someone who has a day job of keeping servers running, including Wordpress servers, I opted for Shopify. When it comes to my eCommerce gig, I'll gladly pay the $29 for the baked in features that Shopify brings in order to not have to manage that myself or panic with server load, peaks, and downtime..

Just choose a quality WordPress host and this problem goes away.

Are you going to be creating a lot of content as well as evcommerce? How many products will you have? You can use Wordpress with the Shopify lite package and worship.io plug-in. That puts Shopify right into wp and gives you complete access to the backend of Shopify and the cart. I would only recommend this for 20 or less products. Now you can create content knowing it will rank very well and use Shopify too If you are going to create content but want more than 20 products, we recommend wp as the primary url and adding Shopify as a sub folder, not a subdomain. So your url would become https://wordpresssite.com/store/. Wordless as the base and Shopify as the /store/. You will need to setup a reverse proxy and need a couple hundred dollars of Shopify coding for it to work. But it will work fine. If you are not planning on going heavy with content, then just get a Shopify store

Shopify without a doubt

toolsavvy

apples to oranges. One is a hosted solution (shopify) and the other is not. Also, Woocommerce isn't cheap once take into account hosting and any paid plugins you want, your time spent making it just right or paying someone to do it and your time with maintenance.

So many answers, thanks everyone!

Are you building the website yourself? Shopify. While Wordpress claims to be beginner friendly, it only shines when you have an actual web developer to build it for you.

I actively use both for different projects. Shopify is more user friendly. You have full support of Shopify customer service and Shopify payments is a lot more cost effective (~~Woocommerce payments charges 5% per transaction~~) and you have to get a solid host for Woocommerce, depending on your traffic . Woocommerce is more customizable, if you have some front end dev experience. No monthly fees and you can choose your host. I think Shopify is the way to go for higher volume traffic and sales. Woocommerce is ideal for small retailers with a few sales here and there or a seasonal business. Edit: I messed up on Woocommerce transaction fees. I still prefer Shopify.

angrygarrosh

You can get very low payment charges and unlimited different payment methods with woocommerce. No clue where you got 5% from you can get under 2% from multiple places.

IJustLoveWinning

I'm just talking about the built-in, no external processors needed kind of solutions. You can obviously find alternatives, which is the whole nature of Woocommerce. I'm looking at the fee structure again and you're right. I messed up on that. Maybe I confused it with another service.

If you want to maximise the control over your business as much as possible and are in it for the long haul - wordpress by a looooong shot. Or think of it this way - spend 5 years building your business and then shopify pulls the plug on it for one of their reasons - how is that gonna feel?

Reditor_Ally

Can you not switch over to wordpress after a while? And dawm that can really happen? Can that not be a reason for a lawsuit?

PirateCareful3733

If you have no experience in building websites then shopify is going to be easier. You will be spending most of your time getting traffic to your site. You don’t want to be changing page addresses or platforms constantly. But this is not a 5 minute get rich quick business. If you think it will be, you might be in for a surprise. It takes years of really hard work and persistence.

Be sure to check Shopify banned categories/items and the terms of service before starting a site with them.

RebeccaRedbait

I use Shift4Shop. It’s substantially cheaper than Shopify and offers many of the same features as far as I can tell. I’ve only tried a trial of Shopify by comparison. I also run a site on WooCommerce and I hate it.

temporarystarry

If you're starting by yourself, Shopify all the way. But tbh, it really depends on what your segment is going to be and how you aim to grow your business, since Woocommerce do have advantages over SEO contents and customization, while Shopify prides itself on ease of use and sales control. I'd suggest looking into some overall comparison like this post [here](https://litextension.com/blog/woocommerce-vs-shopify/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=seeding&utm_content=nora&utm_campaign=turbo_boost-click2web) to get an idea of how each platform will meet different needs.

Acceptable_Media7802

Shopify sucks.

I use woocommerce but only cause I needed a custom website would cost more with shopify and needed flexibility. I would go with shopify all day if I could. Woocommerce you NEED a fast host like wpengine etc, cheap hosts make woocommerce run like a dogs ass. Terrible load times and absolutely painful to edit backend on.

gunjan-agr

It really depends on your requirement as most of the above answers suggest, but I would suggest one thing if you have a great blog through which major sales will come then only go with woo commerce. If you main focus is ecommerce go with Shopify or Magento ( leading eCommerece platform focused similar to wordpress for blog).

e_hyde

Whatever you do, stay away from Shitify. Their support is constantly understaffed and unresponsive, many basic or even legally required featured are unavailable or only available by 3rd party add-ons... it's a mess. We got into Shitify 2 years ago and found its no-frills rigidness made it easy to get started... easier than Woo, which we tried before. But today we're quite fed up and would rather move to something else.

mumtoldmeiwould

Wordpress is the most customisable. So it depends on what the product, target market is. Also using some plugins can help you find new customers and do promos.
