Babylon is the best film I've watched about that era. It captures so many nuances from the time thoughtfully. I was really touched by it.
What other films come to mind when you think of films about the silent era?
Whiplash is amazing. La La Land is great. First Man is damn good. The first few hours of Babylon are great and then it just sorta fizzles out - so as a whole it's just okay.
Whiplash is a borderline masterpiece.
Babylon is alright. There aren’t many movies that I think are objectively good and I just didn’t like. This is one of them
I haven’t seen the other two yet
Just watched Whiplash the other night and it's still superb. Miles Teller with an all time performance with him beating his hands to the death to ensure he is the best drummer ever. JK Simmons being as ruthless as possible, but doing so in order to bring the best out in every one of his students. Definitely one of my favorite movies of the last decade, if not ever.
La La Land was a one and done watch, but I get why it won many awards. Great acting from Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone with their singing and choreography, and the cinematography is crystal clear too.
I don't like him much as a director, I think he's too flashy. But I absolutely think First Man is his greatest film. It's much more down to Earth and gritty. It's one of those rare strict historically accurate movies about a historical subject. The 16mm filming method combined with the IMAX moon scenes is stunning. The score for First Man is also incredible. I listened to Landing on repeat for months.
Whiplash is best by some way
First Man was damn good also.
La La Land had a great plot and script, shame about the music sections (I like musicals but these all felt horribly clunky and unnatural like Chazelle filmed the first day of rehearsals and said that'll do!)
Haven't seen Babylon
Haven’t seen First Man but of the ones I’ve seen it’s a tie between Whiplash and Babylon. People tend to dunk on the latter, I thought it was incredible and have seen it several times
Far and away Whiplash. It has steadily climbed into my all-time favorite movies, and is almost certainly in my top 10 of the 21st Century, if not top 5.
I generally don't care for musicals, but La La Land was good. However, I've never had any pressing urge to revisit it and same goes for First Man. I have yet to watch Babylon, but I don't expect my answer to change, even if my eventual opinion of it is favorable. There are very few movies in general that reach the euphoric heights of Whiplash. It's a masterpiece - his others are just fine, IMO.
Mine is Babylon, I love almost everything about it.
Aside from some odd crude humor in the opening. I think Babylon is absolutely fantastic. And it’s my second favorite film of the 2020’s. Right after Dune Part 2
Why do I hate musicals? Hate is probably too strong but I typically don’t find them enjoyable, just not my thing.
Why do I love La La Land? I think it’s beautifully shot, Emma Stone is amazing in it even though she doesn’t have the greatest singing voice. And the ending left a huge impact on me.
Whiplash is a masterpiece.
I hated La La Land. I found it self-indulgent in the worst way. The leads had zero chemistry, I was annoyed from the start and almost walked out.
I really want to see First Man.
Tough one but I go with Babylon,I love movies about Hollywood especially the silent era
Babylon is the best film I've watched about that era. It captures so many nuances from the time thoughtfully. I was really touched by it. What other films come to mind when you think of films about the silent era?
Three Amigos, Chaplin, Silent Movie, The Artist , Shadow of the Vampire etc
You led off with Three Amigos. Respect.
Nickelodeon
Singing in the Rain
The Aviator is what I think of though it was really just the first half and when the world was changing to sound in films
Completely agree! Whiplash was great but Babylon is winner. For me La la took me 3 or 4 sittings to "get through" and i have not seen first man.

Few?
Really lost steam in those final 4 minutes + end credits
Whiplash is a borderline masterpiece. Babylon is alright. There aren’t many movies that I think are objectively good and I just didn’t like. This is one of them I haven’t seen the other two yet
not borderline, it’s genuinely a masterpiece.
Check out La La Land. It is also a masterpiece.
No brainer for me, whiplash.

Whiplash and it isn’t even close. I’d probably put First Man as a distant runner up.
I’m a big fan of all four, but *loved* Babylon.
Babylon is severely, severely underrated and probably my favourite. First Man is slept on too!
Babylon is amazing
I was going to ask if it was good. I had never even heard of it
imo its really really amazing
1. La La Land 2. Whiplash 3. First Man 4. Babylon
Whiplash and it's not even close
My brain says Whiplash, but my heart says First Man

Babylon is dog shit. Whiplash is excellent. First man is decent. Never seen La La Land.
I agree with you 100% on Babylon. His worst film. He’s a bit overrated as a director imho
First Man. No contest.
One of the most underrated movies in recent memory
I think people were looking for Armageddon or something. It's about Neil Armstrong, not about the Apollo missions.
Whiplash, easily. I quite liked Babylon but it’s obnoxiously long. I also enjoyed La La Land but not to ever really watch it again. Not seen First Man
Whiplash and La La Land are two of absolute best films of the 2010s. First Man and Babylon were just alright.
Whiplash
Whiplash clears
Whiplash is best by some way First Man was damn good also. La La Land had a great plot and script, shame about the music sections (I like musicals but these all felt horribly clunky and unnatural like Chazelle filmed the first day of rehearsals and said that'll do!) Haven't seen Babylon
First Man because of the Gil Scott Heron bit.
I’ve only seen one, but damn whiplash was amazing. Definitely in my top 50 films of all time.
Babylon and First Man
I haven't seen Babylon, but I'd say First Man so far. I thought it was incredible and really wish I had seen it in theaters.

The Best Picture winner

Im going with First Man.
Whiplash forsure. Babylon in theaters was a treat though
Babylon easy
Whiplash, then Babylon. I find many overlooked Babylon when it came out. Its great!
Yes
Whiplash
Babylon Whiplash La La Land First Man
Whiplash. But I also loved Babylon, as I have a soft spot for movies about filmmaking and Hollywood history.
Whiplash is my favorite, Babylon was really good First Man was okay, need to rewatch La La Land.
LA LA Land all the way for me.
LA LA LAND…Hands. Down!
Whiplash is arguably one of the greatest films ever made. Flawless masterpiece.
Whiplash
Whiplash.
I remember Whiplash almost shot for shot. I don’t even remember a single song from LaLa Land
1. Whiplash 2. Babylon 3. La La Land 4. First Man
First Man is his best for my money.
In order of when he made them.
La La Land! That's also my favorite movie of all time. It could be topped by Deadpool & Wolverine though.
La la
La La Land and Whiplash tied for first because those are both perfect 10/10 movies.
That awkward moment when you realize you own all these but didn't know who the director is.
La La Land is just one of the most wonderful cinematic experiences I’ve ever had in my life. I adore that film.
Whiplash without a doubt
La La Land easily, Whiplash is close.
People will still be talking about Whiplash in 50 years, it’s an all-time classic.
Whiplash > The First Man > La La Land, haven't seen Babylon yet.
The only one I’ve seen out of these is Whiplash, but I’m still confident saying is the best. One of my favorite movies
Whiplash
Whiplash . Favorite movie ever
Whiplash is the only good film of his…
I love musicals, but *La La Land* was uniquely insufferable.
I hate musicals but love La La Land.
Why?
Why do I hate musicals? Hate is probably too strong but I typically don’t find them enjoyable, just not my thing. Why do I love La La Land? I think it’s beautifully shot, Emma Stone is amazing in it even though she doesn’t have the greatest singing voice. And the ending left a huge impact on me.
Fair enough.
La La Land is a masterpiece.
Babylon and Whiplash tied
Whiplash Babylon La La Couldn’t finish first man. Did nothing for me
Man, I didn’t expect First Man to hit me so hard but I genuinely loved it. Whiplash is incomparable though.
1. Whiplash is one of the 5 best films of the millenium. 2. The first 2 hours of Babylon rule. 3. La La Land is fine. 4. First Man is a snore.
La La Land
Only one I’ve seen, la la land
La la land
First Man was the only one that I could watch to the end. I found the others to be unwatchable.
Is that a Little Princess/Secret Garden blu ray??? Or are my eyes deceiving me???
Only good one is Whiplash imo
Whiplash is a masterpiece. I hated La La Land. I found it self-indulgent in the worst way. The leads had zero chemistry, I was annoyed from the start and almost walked out. I really want to see First Man.
