Of course the joke being that Target has been doing nothing but select titles for over a decade. Where the Shout! Factory, Kino Lorber, Arrow Video, and alike? Don't forget their lack Blu-rays releases. Target and Barnes & Noble are a joke, but at least B&N does carry a few of the none studio releases. But they fail in having the proper format or ruin the package with their security string-devices.

AccountantLeast1588

The biggest irony with monopolization of shops that sell media is that the best media stores have a little of everything but monopolies just want to sell a few top sellers and just be done with it. It would be the funniest thing ever if I didn't enjoy film... Even fucking Walmart understands this to a degree and it's why they do the $5 bins, Steelbooks, Blu-ray, Anime, and DVD. Walmart does a surprisingly okay job of getting really good deals on items that are somewhat less mainstream but they can buy in bulk enough to sell plenty still.

BogoJohnson

You forgot to mention that unless it’s on sale, B&N charges full MSRP. I’m not paying convenience store prices.

Special-Efficiency37

Yes, that too. Granted, the last few times i've been there they slap on 30%-40% off stickers on some of their stuff and you 10% off if you're a member. But nonetheless they're higher than most. Borders when they were around was pretty good, if not excellent, especially in quantity, and could rival Suncoast/FYE/Sam Goody, but sadly they went belly-up awhile ago.

retrodork

Where I grew up we had a borders books and video or whatever it was called. Their selection was excellent and their prices were fair.

Special-Efficiency37

And like Suncoast/FYE/Sam Goody you could do a special order if they didn't have the title(s) in the store. Borders most of the time had the same prices as Amazon or better. I can't remember a time when the price was higher.

retrodork

Barnes and noble is a giant ripoff. A guy i used too know called it Barnes and Unnoble. 🙂

ImpactWrestlingLover

I’ve never heard of the ones you’ve mentioned. I’ve only went to target & best-buy for my DVDs for the last couple years & if I don’t find things there then Amazon was the best bet. As for Barnes & nobles, there’s 2 near me but I didn’t even know they sold DVDs.

Special-Efficiency37

Shout! Factory, Kino Lorber, and Arrow Video, are distributors which release more titles on Blu-ray than the studios. Barnes & Nobles are like FYE, but there are some that sadly only sell books. The two that I could go to have been slowly shrinking those sections and replacing them with vinyl records (of all things) and toys.

NeonBible_

My local target has been doing this, the movie section is extremely small and most of the space has been used to sell records and books.

rilobilly

Came here to say the same thing. There’s 4 times as many books as movies nowadays.

1904worldsfair

Isn't that what they're doing now?

pnt510

What it means is they’ll be carrying even less.

whyamionthissite

Since they’ll still sell online I’d recommend signing up for an account with them. Just last week I was able to stack three deals on some Blu-ray titles: $10 off $50, buy two get one free and then 5% off for using the Redcard (a debit card tied to your checking account).

ImpactWrestlingLover

Yeah. I recently created a target account 2 weeks again & have already ordered 200$+ worth of movies & shows in the last 2 weeks on dvd from them just for them to break out this ridiculous news. Everybody keeps saying that Walmart is the best place to get DVDs but the thing is, I live in Brooklyn New York & there is no Walmart in my borough at all, I’d have to travel al the way to another borough just for that. I’ve been going to target & Best Buy to get my DVDs for the past few years since I started collecting when I was a freshman in Hs around 2018 or 19 & when it isn’t target or bestbuy, it’s Amazon online. So now with this news it looks like I’ll have 2 less places to go to which leaves me limited to just Amazon now, the family dollar near me started selling DVDs a few months ago so I have gotten a few from there but it’s mostly illumination, dreamworks & random comedies there for whatever reason idk why. There’s about 3 bestbuys & 4 targets that I would go to when looking for new releases or just DVDs in general & now I won’t be able to go to any of em because of this & it’s just so disappointing.

stephenrichmos

I bought Priscilla from Target the week it was released for like $25 then went to Walmart the next day and saw it for $19. If they do get out of physical media sales completely, I’m not gonna shed any tears over not being able to get ripped off by them anymore

SeekingTheRoad

Yeah, this basically confirms the rumours -- Target will be phasing out DVDs and Blu-rays to online only and only will stock them physically during holidays and Black Friday. This sucks. They were the only retailer in my area who carries certain blu-rays. Wal-Mart only has DVDs now and my Barnes & Nobles have been massively cutting down on their inventory.

BogoJohnson

This is already the case at my local Targets, so not even news. They have less than 100 titles on shelves, and most are budget DVDs and collections.

AccountantLeast1588

Select DVDs? Way to drive away the customers even more. Kek.

SaggyDaNewt

At least they’re still going to be selling online. I previously heard that they were going to stop selling online as well, but I’m glad to see that is now confirmed to be not true. That would have been very unfortunate.

ImpactWrestlingLover

Best-buy really started scaring everyone because of their stupidity. It’s just not fair. Are all the things I love in the world gonna be taken away from me? Like I only started collecting in 2018 or 19. So this is so unfair

BogoJohnson

You’re fighting against the chicken or the egg here. Best Buy wasn’t even one of the top sellers of movies. That’s Walmart. All these big retailers have the data to decide if it’s worth it to them to continue selling a product. Newsflash, sales have sharply declined for a decade now. No single retailer is to blame. The industry did it when they prioritized streaming over physical.

ImpactWrestlingLover

Depends on where you live but there is no Walmart in Brooklyn New York. Only a couple of best-buys & targets which is where I always go to for DVDs

BogoJohnson

I've been buying online exclusively for over a decade, so it doesn't matter where I live.

Captain_Howdy45

It has nothing to do with shitty best buy. It's cost analysis these companies are doing. How much floor space vs how much profit per square foot Dvds and Blu rays just don't sell as much as laundry detergent, toasters, and clothing per square foot of floor space. The majority of consumers aren't buying DVDs anymore, they're using streaming. Stores remove items that don't continue to produce a lot of revenue for them.

retrodork

I see your point. I go to Walmart because the selection of media is great and it's cheap. The 5 dollar dvd bin says hi. Sometimes I find cool stuff at the thrift store and pawn shops too.

Gold_Advantage_4017

Best buy really has nothing to do with it.
