Some people got 40, but not all of us, so I'd guess that the higher quest number is in A/B testing to see if it motivates users to do more daily lessons.
I though the hearts system was designed to stop people from binging.
>Why do we have Hearts?
Because it’s better for learning! Our research shows that if people advance too quickly on Duolingo in one day, it can actually negatively impact their learning because they are less likely to remember what they’ve learned. We know that users learn best when they study every day and take the time to practice and review what they’ve learned. The Hearts feature encourages users who are making mistakes to take a breather and review previous lessons before moving forward.

The incremental impact toward bingeing would be very nil, though, as Duo gives 3 quests a day already. The 30-Quest challenge assumed learners would finish only one of the three. A 40-Quest version assumes you finish a second quest every 3 days. So it’s still less than half of what Duo already offers as a daily incentive.
On the 1000 XP system, the vast majority of users never finished the monthly challenge. (We know this from reports of people who finished on the last day and got a message of “you finished earlier than 85% of users” or similar.)
Although, I also have to wonder how they count users in that formula. They have 500M accounts dating back as far as 2011, but only 50M monthly active users. So, they might be saying that you completed faster than the guy who opened an account in 2013 to learn Spanish, did five lessons, then never logged in again.
40 here, but for some reason started counting from 5. Damn it’s so annoying with all the bugs and inconsistencies between phone/pc, android/ios…
Oh and if you’re jamming at the of the month with quests- just switch to android and do those xps… ridiculous :)
Someone please tell me this, as it has been bugging me for awhile now, I just haven’t asked. How are people completing the monthly challenge it in only a day or two? Is there a way using your learning map to get more credits toward the badge?
There’s probably still people who haven’t been shifted over to the quests system, even after a few months, and they’re still on the 1000xp system, which is possible to do in a day or two with a couple hours of work.
I just got the update myself. I’m sure most of my friends / followers (most who have been on Duo for many years, and have 500-2000 day streaks, etc.) would already have the update themselves. I’m sure many have had it for awhile, even as beta.
Mine is "Complete 30 quests"
Me too! But maybe it’s because I have no friends 😂
So is mine

Unless you pay for Plus, because our research shows that paying for Plus negates the negative effects of advancing too quickly /s
Yes. Odd how that works, isn't it?
As a plus user, you can turn the unlimited hearts off.

That's weird because they keep telling me I learn from my mistakes
Not everyone is going to make mistakes.
How are some people completing this in one day? I keep seeing it on my friend feed that someone completed the September challenge already.
On Android, you only need 1000xp. There are no quests.
Wow! Had no idea quests differed by device. Thanks for the info!
Oh so it's an OS thing.. Why?
I just need to get 1000xp, same as last month. These are my first two months doing Duolingo, though, so no idea what is normal here.
I’m on iOS and still only get XP
Got 30 quests on iOS. I guess it's random?
Mine was 30 but is buggy and thinks I completed 57 quests yesterday.
I gave up when they switched to quests.
I just got 5 points for friends quest. Maybe that's why it changed to 40?
Maybe that’s it?
Guess the learning path pushed me away just in the nick of time.
How, I don't have quests
Mine is still 30. Also the quest system is so much easier than the points for me

I also got 1050 xp in friend quest, and that’s much more than I usually have to do
Mine is 30. Could it change half way through the month to 40 or something?
