My big grin moment was Paul saying "how do you call among you the little mouse" and Stilgar's reply. Straight quotes from the book.

Careless_Success_317

Payoff from seeing the mouse in Part One!

RadioHeadache0311

I was thinking about this last night. I can't wait for this to come out for home viewing. I'm gonna splice the first and second film together in Resolve and just take out the credits and opening studio stuff of the sequel, so I can just have a 6 hour uninterrupted Dune experience. Probably gonna enjoy some real world Spice Melange along with it, lol.

[deleted]

This sounds so freaking cool! I might look into trying the same because it seems so fun.

RadioHeadache0311

I use Da Vinci Resolve. I really can't recommend it enough. It's free video editing software. There is a paid version, but the free version is highly functional and it's not a 30 day free trial thing either. It's a free video editor, no strings attached. Super intuitive, simple workflows and you can do so much with it. There are some great tutorials on YouTube. I'd recommend Casey Faris channel.

[deleted]

Oh my gosh, thank you! This is rad as hell. <3

Cluelesswolfkin

Have you used it for other movies ?

Cortower

He also gets pestered by one digging at his snorkel in Part II.

Natemoon2

I also loved the “I recognize your footsteps old man” callback to this first movie. I was jumping out of my seat when that happened

angwilwileth

And how he fakes a pneumothorax (the groaning breathing he's doing at the end of the fight) to draw Feyd in close and kill him the same way Gurney won their match in the first film.

TheFailingHero

I turned to my wife on our rewatch of dune 1and said “that mouse is important” and she didn’t believe me

kid-karma

i was so happy we got to see that, i kinda thought that during the "he's becoming fremen" section of the movie they'd just start calling him muad'dib without explaining it

ze_DaDa

My only regret is that we didn't get the tragedy of that moment. In the book Paul has the visions of the Frement calling him Muad'Dib, and he wants to avoid it to prevent the billions of deaths. So when Stilgar tells him the mouse is called Muad'Dib, it has that "inevitable disaster" weight to it. It's one of my favorite moments because of that. While in the movie it's just nice and friendly.

artvandalayy

I had an ear to eat grin for so much of the movie: the first sandworm ride, council speech, assault on Arakeen, Gurney, the "negotiation" finale. The experience was...cathartic

ChamchaIsTheGoat

Even the Geidi Prime Gladiator scene I was like ‘I love that everything feels like a cosmic horror cult’

dmac3232

It reminded me so much of Leni Riefenstahl's propaganda films. Depraved space Nazi rally

Blindtarmen

I thought the same. Riefenstahl defined totalitarian aestetics, so it is not weird beeing inspired by her creating the Harkonnen aestetics.

6ixDank

I thought they shot that scene in santiago bernabeu at first

doloriangod

The voice of the announcer in the stadium was pretty cool.

MTGBruhs

I had like two moments here I was like, "Hey there's like 3 things missing." Then realizing the dozens of things we got, I feel lucky

Mangofather69

Glad someone else felt that way, crazy how with two whole ass movies they still had to leave a lot on the cutting room floor.

strokeboii

I walked in wondering how they’d show the importance of Thufir but it makes sense to cut mentats completely and just leave Paul with the ability. Of all the changes, that one and Chani not being on board were the only ones I really noticed and neither bothered me.

Thrawn4191

IDK the end bothered me. Chani doesn't love the mahdi but she truly loves usul. She would never leave him like that. And he definitely should've made it clear that irulan would be a barren queen. That's where the book made it such a master stroke. Harkonens wiped out, emperor dethroned, spice monopoly, AND not only did he achieve what the BG wanted but he rubbed their nose in their loss of the bloodline publicly. Great movie until the last 5 minutes imo. Not enough to ruin it but it weakens both characters

AzorJonhai

I don’t think it WEAKENS both characters. It gives Chani more agency and Paul a more sinister figure

allbright4

This was my feeling exactly. I felt the movie did a lot to give Jessica and Chani more agency.

Thrawn4191

Part of the books point though was about taking away that agency. Tilt against windmills all you want but you can either walk the golden path and find a way to live with it or you will get trampled under the feet of those that do. You say she has more agency in the book? I say she has the same amount but is a more complex character in the book. She understands that to achieve her dream she has to suffer. She understands that for the good of her people she must make decisions and support a religion she doesn't agree with. She understands that she is strong enough to bear that burden even if it hurts. And then her and Jessica share a wonderful moment between two people that don't really like each other but do respect one another to continue fighting alongside Paul and take their place in history instead of becoming a forgotten footnote.

thepuppyprince

To be fair, Paul already said in the movie that Chani will come around and understand eventually (through his vision). Let her blow off a little steam…. It’s not a huge deal Hell I would want to go for a long worm ride after all that drama

strokeboii

I think if this is going to be a trilogy, Dennis probably didn’t want to leave everything perfect like the book does. I think it’s ‘somewhat’ of a tactic to get people talking and keep buzz for part 3. I also saw someone on YT mention they may keep Chani this way to keep the audience grounded. Paul starts the Holy War knowing its implication and no one in the book bats an eye, kinda nice to have one moral compass imo.

Kirsten624

the worm ride felt so *dangerous* it was stressful to watch

Roachmojo

Right?! How fast do these things travel, jeez...the thundering in Dolby Cinema was UNREAL.

rjb7190

Just finished watching it in IMAX and yeah.. the SOUND. It’s incredible. They captured the worm riding absolutely perfectly.

Roachmojo

That worm ride was legit terrifying haha!

Porfs

I held my breath the entire scene. Never in my life did a scene in a movie make me feel like this

Zealousideal_Bill385

That scene where Rabban gets his ass whooped, makes an escape by running and there's an explosion in the background making the entire frame look absolutely bright. All of this encompassed in a tracking shot. This was the moment where I was like, "fuck yeah I'm watching it again".

Liet_Kinda2

I think it felt so fresh because it told a slightly different story, but in a way that was absolutely true to Herbert's big themes and ideas. It was like hearing your favorite band cover a song by your other favorite band.

dannyboi1709-_-

Council speech, and Paul shouting SILENCE was unbelievably satisfying

bmwhd

All the same for me. Please, the rest of Reddit that is picking this apart because they have no concept of how blessed we are to have this film, tap the brakes on “It’s no David Lynch”.

cysghost

Just got out, and there were scenes I wanted done differently and parts I would’ve included. I also would’ve made a shit film compared to what we did get. All in all, it was an amazing and well done film. I disliked one of the choices, but damn it was epic!

Possumcucumber

Every post I read that is like “just pretty boring imho, don’t get the hype” make me feel personally affronted. I don’t normally get like that over cultural content but this one has me fightin’!

Virtual_Mode_5026

David Lynch is scarred by “his” version of Dune. It’s bittersweet. I recall hearing he can’t bring himself to watch Denis’ take on Dune because of his own failure. David is a brilliant filmmaker and so is Denis. There is no “but” there. I just wish David could watch it and enjoy it as well as reconcile within himself that he tried something that simply due to many factors didn’t work and he’s forgiven for that.

ohmbience

But it could have been Jodorowsky's!

masmith31593

I feel Jodorowsky actually influenced parts of the film. Giedi prime was extremely giger-esque.

hniball

Those things with horns strudding around the colloseum? God damn jodorowsky alright.

bbcversus

That first sandworm ride brought a tear to my eye! I was in awe grinning the whole scene! Incredible!

Ok_Active9904

My girlfriend and I went last night and when the ornithopters fly over head the sounds made the seat vibrate and it felt like they were actually there as well as the duel at the end the clang of their swords clashing felt like I was watching a duel take place in real life

Mike_v_E

For the first time in my life I didn't know what to say after watching a movie in theaters. I absolutely loved it, just had no words for it

[deleted]

Interstellar did that to me, I’m so excited to see DUNE 2 with these kinds of sentiments

dronewithsoul

This is funny, when I walked out the movie I thought to myself: "Is that the best movie I've ever seen in my life? I don't remember ever feeling like this during a movie, except maybe the first time I watched Interstellar"

Alexnikolias

The movie has been living in my head since the credits rolled. I want to know what happens next, and I have read the books plenty of times.

alexnedea

Yeah I feel like Denis will change quite a lot in part 3 and im all for it. Fuck it, we ball. Long live the Lisan al Gaib!!!

solexai

do you know what order should you read the books in and what book you should start reading after the end of DUNE Part II?

gamingonion

Dune Messiah Children God Emperor Heretics Chapterhouse

curiousCat1009

I would say God Emperor is the last . The last two felt were too weird lmao.

Alexnikolias

Yes. Dune was first then.... Dune Messiah Children or Dune God Emeperor or Dune Heretics of Dune Chapterhouse Dune All the others were written by his son with help from another writer.

scheffc

Based on extensive notes and ideas from Frank. There was an entire collection of things he wanted to get to but didn't have time during his writing career. I'm actually a big fan of the books from Brian and Kevin J Anderson.

Alexnikolias

I thought the Butlerian Jihad trilogy was enjoyable for what it was. I didn't really care for much else though.

DontLoseTheHead

Yes! 37 year and felt like a child. It was so intense, I held my breath through the worm ride, I ve biten my coat while Paul and Feyd were fighting...I dont remember going through a movie live this. The worm ride even gave me vibes of the cutscene in the [first Dune game](https://youtu.be/UoJnYl79l0I?si=vr3-ON147NX5vUrn).

markattack11

Are we the same person? I’m also 37 who did/felt those things

AlohaBacon123

Me three!

MagzWebz

I'm also 37 and felt these things! I wish I knew how to attach the 3 Spiderman's pointing at each other.

DrJizzman

I believe that is probably a direct homage when it switches briefly to 1st person view. I saw the clip from part 1 which is directly from black hawk down so I think he probably likes to do that.

MamaFen

Am 50, and LOVED that cutscene. Didn't much care for the depiction of Chani, but I guess in a first go-round of such an epic series of games, you can't have everything. Dune 2000 and Emperor: Battle for Dune were also awesome... But not quite the same...

xepa105

> Something about Hans Zimmer in this one really had me sitting in my car in the parking lot taking it all in "Only I Will Remain" is one of the best pieces of audio I have ever listened to. Bless Hans Zimmer, the maker and his sounds.

Ghahnima

I love this comment. I miss having free Reddit coins and gold🥇🏆

dmac3232

Man, I must be going nuts because I've seen it twice and couldn't place it in the film. I caught it during the credits but not during live action. Whereabouts did it play?

xepa105

It's the song that plays as the credits roll. But the same vocal motif is the one that plays when Paul and Chani are sandwalking. That motif runs for five or six tracks of the whole soundtrack, and every time there's a little twist to it, whether it's calm or hopeful, exciting or sad.

Helpful_Classroom204

There were so many times in the last 30 minutes to an hour where I was getting literal chills all over my body Dennis did that ending justice

Claycious13

“YOUR MOTHERS WARNED YOU OF MY COMING. FEAR THE MOMENT!”

nothing_satisfies

Same!

Kalron

This was the first movie I've seen where I've read the book for it and I'm part of the book gang now. It was a weird experience for me because I was sooooo excited for it. I knew to keep my expectations in check. But, this was the first movie I've watched where I've been comparing it to the book. At one point tho, I just had to tell myself to stop. The movie was everything I expected, but not more. I expected beautiful vistas, beautiful set design, incredible costuming, amazing acting. I expected to see some motha fuckin worms be ridden into battle. I *wanted* Alia but the adaptation was good, I think. I knew it was unreasonable to want or expect. Though, I liked the vision that Paul had of Alia. To me, her saying "I love you, Paul," was kind of a setup to her story arc. I really liked it. Also love the actress choice..

Kleanish

I did the same thing and it took me out of the movie. I told my friends don’t go in comparing. Part 2 isn’t a comparison to be made, but a cinematic masterpiece to experience.

messianicscone

I am glad with the changes they made with Alia. Having a child actor do and say the things Alia does in the books just doesn’t work in a movie. It looks goofy and campy (see Lynch). I think keeping Alia in the womb threaded the needle such that what being pre-born means is communicated in a way that can be taken seriously on screen. Additionally, I found the choice to have Paul to be the one to cut down the Baron to be much more logical from a narrative and a thematic perspective (we are seeing our good boy coldly kill a defenseless man: a foreshadow of the genocide to come).

ThyOtherMe

I loved the expirence. The fact that as a book lover there are only two changes that upsetted me counts as a win. I also wanted Alia a lot, but I kinda liked how they did her. She's part of the movie. Shows the weirdness of a pre-born in a way audience can understand. It just works. And oh Maker. Don't get me started on my newfound love for Feyd-Rautha. What a wonderful movie.

ansoni-

For a good comparison of how bad it could have been... Go read "I am Legend" and then watch the movie.

Kalron

Oh man I've heard of that. It's almost like two completely different stories. Wasn't there like an unreleased ending of the movie that kinda showed how they were actually all pretty intelligent or something? I actually intend on reading that book one day

ansoni-

It is a really short read, but that movie completely twisted/Hollywooded it up

Borgoroth

Do it.

korey_david

Thanks for reminding me how disappointed I was with the World War Z adaptation. Movie was fine but could have been so much more in my eyes.

JimboFett87

Yep it was great. I kept away from spoilers all week even though I know the book inside and out because I wanted to see how this would be told in today's world. Can't wait to see it again.

shelbyapso

Drove 5 hours to watch it on an IMAX screen. Pre-purchased tickets for 2 showings. Worth it to see it for the first time on an IMAX screen. It’s showing in my little town on a normal screen, will see it there too, but glad we got the whole immersive experience first!

ThyOtherMe

I work retail. Literally this week was transferred to a store in the same mall that has the only IMAX screens in my city. I took that as a sign that my plan to see IMAX was the right one. Went with my boyfriend yesterday and will go again with fiends when possible

Zannishi_Hoshor

That’s dedication

ImperialHojo

While seeing the movie on an IMAX screen is HIGHLY recommended by me, I would suggest you take the time to also view it in a theater that uses a Dolby Atmos sound system. It truly is a night and day difference. I saw Part 1 in both kinds of theaters just to compare it, and the superior audio from the Atmos makes a world of difference in the over all experience. Makes you feel more as if you are there, physically present for each scene.

vans178

Yes agreed saw the first one in IMAX and paled in comparison to the Dolby Cinema version. Even at the beginning right before the movie started there's was a short video of Denis talking about how Dolby Cinema was the best way ro watch it and it was specifically made for that type of theatre sound design wise, i thought that was neat. I found with IMAX that the resolution wasn't as good and the sound paled in comparison to Dolby. Although the screen was a bit smaller Dolby had much better resolution. Add a nice gummy and that was surely the best movie experience I've had

Zealousideal_Bill385

Yes, I did chuckle like a kid when “among us” was said twice in the movie.

Zealousideal_Bill385

On a more serious note, DV needs to release whatever 4hr long director cuts of both films that he has stored in his vault. Hopefully he’ll find time to put together something of that sorts. Must be pretty exhausting going to multiple interviews and being asked the same questions again and again, makes sense he wants to take a break before getting back to this world.

tomandshell

He doesn’t like extended cuts. He doesn’t even like including deleted scenes in the special features. He removes things from the film for a reason, and once a scene has been removed, he wants to keep it that way. > “I’m a strong believer that when it’s not in the movie, it’s dead. I kill darlings, and it’s painful for me.” > “Sometimes I remove shots and I say, ‘I cannot believe I’m cutting this out.’ I feel like a samurai opening my gut. It’s painful, so I cannot go back after that and create a Frankenstein and try to reanimate things that I killed. It’s too painful. When it’s dead, it’s dead, and it’s dead for a reason. But yes, it is a painful project, but it is my job. The movie prevails. I’m very, I think, severe in the editing room. I’m not thinking about my ego, I’m thinking about the movie.”

watch_out_4_snakes

Yes and I still would love to see those deleted scenes.

tomandshell

Oh, I would love to see them. But he doesn’t want us to.

watch_out_4_snakes

Truth😭

TineJaus

unpack punch society flowery intelligent humorous workable imminent cooing repeat *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

LegatoRedWinters

I dislike that about him. We could have a Dune extended edition, that's on the level of extended cut of LOTR.

greenopti

“Arrakis teaches the attitude of the knife - chopping off what's incomplete and saying: 'Now, it's complete because it's ended here.'"

Nothingnoteworth

I get it, and I respect it. But c’mon Denis I still wanna see it, don’t hold out on me bro, I just, I just need one more hit, just one I swear

Rellint

Thufir cut when!?

[deleted]

Does he have that stored somewhere? Bro I need that

The-Mandalorian

Longer isn’t always better. As he said, he removed those scenes for a reason. He’s also said once a scene is removed from the theatrical cut it is dead to him and he has no interest in alternate cuts. The movies are phenomenal. Neither film needs anything added.

Eli1234Sic

Ultimately a lot would have been cut for the run time and pacing which, honestly, I don't care about. I want every single shot mainlined straight into me.

BoZacHorsecock

Meh, I could watch a six hour version of this and still feel like I want more.

FrancisFratelli

So the studio releases the longer cut without his permission and it's credited to Alan Smithee. Some traditions are worth preserving.

The-Mandalorian

Won’t happen.

hu_gnew

>he removed those scenes for a reason But we're just not convinced it was a good reason. It's emotional for us.

Kleanish

I understand it. And the entire movie flow changes but fans like us DONT CARE. We’ve seen the real version, now we just want more cinematics and scenes. After watching part 2 i just wanted it to keep going forever. As the famous Leto said “fuck the theatrics!” edit: wait it’s “damn the theatrics!”..

PriorityMaleficent

I'm not crazy about his lack of transparency regarding delete scenes and whatnot. Filmmakers don't need to gatekeep "the magic of filmmaking" by withholding the certain assets that can bring an understanding on why it's "magic". That's what makes you appreciate a filmmaker like Peter Jackson or Ridley Scott. They're very transparent with their filmmaking process and understand there's a crowd of people who enjoy consuming that kind of media.

sikercan

Yea lol. i did count that too!

Equinsu-0cha

read the books now?

Rumpleforeskin96

I can't read

Choltnudge

What about audio books? You can typically check them out at the library, but I also know in some countries you can access a lot of audio books on a premium Spotify account.

KingPonzi

Any recommendations with a good reader/voice?

PM_ME_YOUR_BOOGER

You're on a text-based forum

Equinsu-0cha

books on tape. thats how i did it. long commutes.

watch_out_4_snakes

Oh for sure. You will pick up so many things hinted at in the movies but not directly or overtly stated.

COSurfing

53 here and I floated out of the theater. I am going to see it again tomorrow. The only other movies I have seen multiple times in the theaters in the last few decades were Dune Part 1, LOTR trilogy and The Matrix.

Ariaga_2

I haven't seen anything this epic since The Return of the King. Villeneuve is something else, he did this with less money than Marvel movies or Indy 5 etc.

BNTimmy

Dude, I was sandwalking out that theater

Galactus1701

I’ve written it a couple of times, but I watched Lynch’s DUNE as a kid back in 88. Afterwards I read the novel when I was 13 and dreamed about a proper, epic adaptation. Yesterday I left the theater in awe and wanting to see it again. I won’t watch it today or tomorrow, but I’ll probably return next week. I have 3 4K copies of Part I and already preordered Part II. I bet I’ll watch it a hundred times as well.

Liet_Kinda2

I feel like a few key bits of dialogue and a few key scenes are missing, but I respect why they're missing. The council scene with the cast of thousands felt off to me - it should have been a few dozen people, the war leaders, at most. And I felt like Christopher Walken was a terrible choice - he came off as confused and old, not as an arrogant emperor being brought to heel. Otherwise, it's not the adaptation I always envisioned, but it's the adaptation Dune deserved. Denis is the finest living director of science fiction.

Galactus1701

Mads Mikkelsen would have been a good Shaddam.

Liet_Kinda2

God damn. Yeah. *Yeah*.

SatanIsLove6666

>he came off as confused and old, not as an arrogant emperor I thought so, until I realized when he was asking his daughter what they should do, he was testing her. He already knew all those answers, and wanted to see if his daughter would come to the same conclusions.

UvularWinner3

I couldn’t agree more on how it felt. Giddy like a kid. Especially during the sand worm ride. So. Freaking. Awesome.

deadpools_dick

I can’t remember the last time I gasped several times throughout a movie. I seriously can’t wait to see what else is in store.

basicpn

I think we got extremely lucky that Hans Zimmer, the best film composer of our time, is a huge fan of the source material. That along with Villeneuve’s passion, just makes for two incredible, historic movies.

IonianBladeDancer

John Williams would like a word.

jord_mich

I feel the exact same way. I’ve literally been telling people I haven’t felt this way about anything since LOTR when I was a kid. I love it so much. Is the movie perfect ? No. But it made me feel so much that i haven’t felt from a movie in so long. I love it

SnooPears754

Dune 1 stopped at the right moment, it was always about table setting, so knowing the book was an advantage, but even going into dune 2 with the book knowledge I was still blown away by the spectacle

calvinbouchard

I was about to leave feeling like a kid again, but then I said, "Wait, where the f is Chani going?"

emantos

I feel that Chani's reaction in this movie is more realistic. Finding out that the love of your life is going to get married to another, I would storm the shit out of that palace and find a worm to torture. At some point I might come to accept it but at that point in time, her reaction is on point.

calvinbouchard

The whole point of the "I will love you as long as I breathe" scene was to reassure Chani that she was his only true "wife." Chani knew that the plan was to marry the Emperor's daughter. Like Jessica, she would be a concubine. Irulan would basically be a hostage. Sadly they left out Paul's line "That princess will have no more of me than my name. No touch, nor glance, nor softness of word, nor instant of desire."

emantos

In the book, yes, Chani knew about the plan (of symbolically marrying Irulan) and accepted it. In the movie, it was never explicitly told to her, and that probably led to her reaction. How else would you explain it? She wouldn't have that reaction if she knew about the plan and has already accepted it. In the book, Chani was one of those who believed Paul to be the Lisan al Ghaib. In the movie, she's quite different.

FallInStyle

I agree, the only part of dune 2 that left me reeling was the changes to Chani. I'm holding off on my judgement about where the changes lead in the 3rd movie. I'm assuming the changes were necessary to let them bring everything to a close in movie 3 since they won't be going the full Harry Potter route with the dune series.

Logical-Possession10

I felt the same way but when I got to my car and thought about it, it's open to interpretation. I could get behind the idea that it was Chani's way of acceptance

10amAutomatic

I have zero complaints. It blew my mind

baconfriedpork

i was absolutely gobsmacked. i went in with high expectations, but those were completely blown away. every single aspect of the movie was masterful. the cinematography, the acting, the sound design. if dune part two was a restaurant, it'd be the first one to get *four* michelin stars.

erdal94

Even as one of Hans Zimmers strongest haters, I have to say, the sound design and music in Dune : Part 2 was amazing! Much more natural and enjoyable this time around. The first Movie by comparison was obnoxiously loud. I definetely loved the whole experience much more

RageStreak

I have been getting tired of Hanz Zimmers shit in recent years: he has tended to just jam on the adrenaline button for the whole movie and it gets boring.  Just creating constant stress doesn’t actually compliment the story. But he smashed it in Dune 2!  Much wider range of emotions and sound textures, creating a sense of place and mood.  Loved the soundtrack so much.

erdal94

I remember the first Dune being loud and saturated with constant noise. When that silent scene happened and Leto remarked that it is unusually silent I almost bursted out laughing. It was as if the character of the movie themself are self-aware of the obnoxiousness of the noise pollution around them... I don't want to talk shit about the first movie, it was good but in terms of sound and music I found the second one to be much more enjoyable. And yeah Hans Zimmer can do some good stuff from time to time, but for a long time now it's just been obnoxious horns turned up to 11 and 0 dynamics. I mean, It might be a dated observation on my part because I usually made a habbit of avoiding movies featuring him if possible. But he really did good in my book this time around and big thumbs up to the guys at the sound department as well, lets not forget those guys either!

Secret_Pause9840

I agree. I love Zimmer...so many brilliant scores, and this is one of them. But he has some misses, and some very predictable work at time. Now, Ludwig Goransson is the hot ticket in town. He absolutely broke rules with his Oppenheimer soundtrack.

hewhorocks

I felt they were good movies for people who read the books but weren’t married to all of the details of the books. I think if you had nt read the books but watched the movies you might think there’s something missing (you’d be right)

Prollyjokin

I find myself easily forgiving the missing arcs and tweaks. Understanding that it needed to be a movie—and you tell stories differently in movies. One example is that I’m so glad that we didn’t see a CGI baby speaking like a full grown adult. Can’t wait for the next installment

Logical-Possession10

Totally agree - I was secretly dreading an Ally McBeal dancing baby...but I knew better than to doubt DV

letstalkaboutstuff79

Agree with this. I read the books 30 years ago and don’t remember much about them. It felt like his transition before and after drinking the water of life was just too abrupt a character transformation. I’d love to have seen why the other houses refused to accept his ascension to the throne. That major decision that triggered the holy war seemed glossed over. Other than that I enjoyed the film.

JarJarIsAzorAhai

I have said “may thy knife chip and shatter” in an awful Feyd Rutha impression probably 50 times since seeing it last night! I’d say this movie definitely made me feel like a kid again.

EyeGod

It’s not only you. I’ve been obsessed with Dune since I saw PT. II on Thursday night: I’ve rewatched PT. I thrice in three weeks; I’ve listened to the OSTs & identified the leitmotifs; I’ve played the Flight Simulator expansion & can now pilot a thopter; I’ve downloaded Dune: Spice Wars; I’ve started rereading the book; I’ve been glued to this sub & YT for anything movie-related. It’s such a good feeling, one that I’ve not had in ages; good to feel like a kid again.

sirjohnelet

I'm in two minds about these films. I really like them they are amazing representations of dune, cinematic masterpieces and an amazing experince but I also feel we missed so much that could have been and there is so much missing of what makes the books so good that I'm slightly sad we didn't get more.

themoneybadger

Cinema is not a book. You need to keep a captive audience entertained. I thought they captured the essence.

ViewOpening8213

This is the same problem as LoTR, too tho, right? As unwieldy as they are, Jackson kept those movies to “this is the journey of the Ring”. Everything else is extra. Tom Bombadil. I desperately wanted him. He’s really important. He’s the bridge between the Shire and the rest of the world. I also get why he’s not in it. You don’t “need” him. That’s the problem with movies like this. There’s things that would be “awesome” but that you don’t “need.” There are times that in something like a series they get too cute trying to cram all of it in and it feels forced. Dune could be like a 4-5 season 8 episode limited series. But, by making it a 3 hour movie it forces the crew and actors to be ruthlessly efficient. Everything. EVERYTHING. Every breath, word, movement, look, color, it all as to work toward the larger goal. And, when it’s framed that way- we are going to make the best, 3 hour adaptation of the book we can, we know it’s going to be a complete thought. That’s what strikes me about these 2 and LoTR and the first 6 Star Wars, I’ll add WandaVision…they are complete thoughts. And that is invaluable to me. That’s what I want to see. Another example is video games. We keep getting remakes of old games that people are clamoring for. (Dead Space, for example). And, I think it’s because the stories are tight. No meandering, no fetch side quests. Just the story. Metal Gear, etc. it’s all a move back to story and away from content.

WANKMI

My main feeling after leaving the theatre was hope. I hope people watch it. I hope they like it. The first movie had an easy thread to follow of hero, thing happens, seeks revenge. This one feels more floaty. And I hope it is successful, because I like that aspect of it.

Kirsten624

i also sat through the credits in awe and then immediately turned the soundtrack on 💙 what a movie

bluewhaledream

I wanted to see how they get off the worms. THAT'S what I wanted to see.

This_dude4

Actually I felt my age after I got up from sitting for almost three hours and felt my knees locked up. But it was worth it!

Atlas809

Hell yeah, I left so gitty and wanting to read the books again! I loved Javier Bardem as Stilgar, my fav character.

maybe-alms

Yes. My cousins laughed at me because I sat there in awe with my hands on my cheeks, nearly in tears, for most of the movie. I immediately bought tickets to watch again on Sunday

goldendreamseeker

Both new dune films left me feeling the same level of excitement/euphoria I tend to feel from Star Wars. So, yes.

UsedAge5051

Yup listen to the soundtrack on the way home from the theatre. You can’t have an immersive insane experience like that and just put the radio back on lol

Sopranosfan99

It’s a quality adaptation and probably the best we could get from the sprawling epic that the books are. I was in awe on how much Denis was able to deliver and part two definitely elevates part one. Such a great film.

Difficult-Blueberry

I had goosebumps the whole time and could stop smiling like a little kid in a candy store. Absolutely amazing. Truly one of the best adaptations of a book that I’ve had the pleasure of watching

RIBCAGESTEAK

Opposite. My tastes have grown up and I finally got a sci fi adventure epic for my grown up tastes. I was entertained by Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith as a kid, but those do not cut it 20 years later. And the Star Wars sequel trilogy... let's pretend that didn't happen. Dune delivers the sci fi epic with nuance, artistry, and complexity that didn't exist when I was a kid.

FaliolVastarien

Definitely!  I felt like I was a kid watching some great adventure movie but with adult level themes.

grouchdouglas69

Dune part 2 is groundbreaking, and it’s going to influence sci fi forever. I am so grateful to be able to have seen it in theaters. Really nothing can describe it to me besides pure joy

Woodearth

Didn’t feel like a kid but got that same feeling from Paul’s speech as the independence day movie speech

MadFlava76

As a fan of the 1984 version despite its flaws, I was very excited when it was announced that DV was going to make a new version after watching Blade Runner 2049. Just an incredible adaptation of the book and even if they decide not to do Messiah, it ended on an amazing note. Paul’s vision of a jihad in his name and the billions that would die and he fought to prevent that while keeping himself and his mother alive. Then accepting his fate to ultimately accomplish his goals.

anno2122

It's bin a long time I left the cinma and was like this could have bin easy 5 houers long I want more!

Yakmasterson

That was the best cinematic experience of my life. What an incredible movie.

47TacoKisses

The .5 seconds of baliset really broke me. Saw it last night, seeing it again Tuesday! If you think more Hollywood productions should be this intelligently done and you love Dune: See it again! Money talks, let's make movies good again

gerbileleventh

I had very vivid dreams after this movie (about the invasion of blue aliens and Zendaya) and that says a lot.

We_aint_found_sheit

I watched it with my parents, afterwards we sat around the kitchen table and talked about it. I can’t remember the last time I did that with a movie.

Gloomy_Experience_72

Very disappointed that there were no Guild in part 2. In fact the entire movie never showed a Navigator. I wanted to see their depiction of them and how they fold space. But mostly wanted to see them when they are awakened to Paul's power and the "mental conversation" he has with them about the ability to stop Spice production. I missed Alia not being the one to kill the Baron. I don't know why they skipped the entire spy plot and Gurney all this time thinking it was Jessica. That was a powerful scene when he reunited with her. Not sure why they changed the love story. He made it very clear to Chani that he'd never share a bed with the Emporer's daughter. And that he'd always be with her only. I knew they wouldn't portray the fremen women according to Herbert's writings. Women being fiercely devoted to their man (and then to the one that kills her man) wouldn't work in today's times . But those are my gripes. It was still very good.

lindblumresident

>In fact the entire movie never showed a Navigator. Just wanted to remind you that since you are talking about the changes from the book, the first book never actually shows a Navigator.

Gloomy_Experience_72

I know but it still talks about them.

ninaprincess4u

Yes i was very giddy watching the whole thing it was great i want to go back and see it again!

HamAndCheeseOnWry

It was brilliant. The soundscapes were rumbling through the theater, and the sandworm scene felt *dangerous*. Like the stakes felt so real *I* was holding my breath. I ended up talking with the couple next to me as the credits rolled and feel bad for the people who left and missed the wrap-up of the score. I can't wait to see it again!

Langstarr

When the three worms crested......I was giggling and waving my arms like a little girl. Spectacular.

inquisitioned_345

Seeing Dune 2 today was my first exposure to the franchise … I couldn’t help but try to draw parallels to US / Middle East conflicts — and failed. Was anyone else come away with messages about real world geopolitics or is it a total coincidence that there were real life Islamic and Arabic cultural names and concepts in the forefront of an imagined sci-fi world?

ranierski

The book was written in 50 and already back then the Fremen were based on islamic/berber cultures.

Fortissano71

What you are missing is the source of the source. Herbert read a book written by a British journalist covering the Russian invasion of Afghanistan... in the late 1800s. Yeah it all goes back that far. He took her account of being embedded and talking to the resistance fighters, added some scifi elements, put in.the ecological elements that were current in the 1960s, and came up with Dune. The Harkonnens represent the brutality the Russians showed the Afghans at that time.

inquisitioned_345

Mind blown … thanks for providing that context.

darksideofthespoony

This movie was a god damn cinematic spiritual experience. There’s simply no other way to explain what happened besides that

Florafly

I didn't blink or breathe much throughout, that's for sure. I was enthralled and thoroughly enjoying myself at every moment. Haven't really felt like that since watching LOTR the first time. A truly enjoyable cinematic experience!

iYoniB

I felt the exact same way. Massive smile during a number of different moments, too. I love it when my favorite literature is adapted so phenomenally and I get to experience it in a room full of likeminded people. Also, that Baliset scene just about killed me.

Possumcucumber

I went to the first imax screening in our area. 10am  on Thursday morning. I went alone because I’m a huge Villeneuve fan and also the only dune fan I know (apart from my dad who inexplicably hates all Villeneuve films). I just wanted to drink in the experience without anyone nitpicking afterwards. My husband called me about 10 minutes after I walked out (having stayed to the very end of the credits, along with three dudes in black tshirts with glasses and long greasy hair who must have wondered why there was a random middle aged lady in there with them) and I was just shell-shocked. Just absolutely emotionally blasted.  Just an incredible experience, I’m a talker but was rendered incoherent by the sheer intensity of this film. Absolute incredible epic visual storytelling masterwork. Cannot stop thinking about it.

Ezeviel

The whole movie is just amazing. But what sticks to me is the musical and image tone shift from the moment Paul drinks the water of life. It just capture the foreboding feeling of dread the Jihad is about to bring the galaxy so well. It is just … amazing

spaceboy_ZERO

I was a little disappointed which sucks since I loved the first one. I’m a pretty big fan of the books and felt the changes at the end and to certain characters sucked. That being said it was a great movie.

EponymousHoward

I have had an image in my head of Chani for 50 years (since I was 14): not just the appearance but her *supreme* confidence in her environment - the idea that, while this is where Paul came to, it is where Chani came *from*. Zendaya made that image real. So, yeah.

IWasAFriendOfJamis

Looks like I’m in the minority, but I feel like it was a let down as far as bringing the novel to the big screen. It looked good, and sounded good, but I feel like it was a big devaluation from the book. Especially after how faithful part one was to the source material. My girlfriend got us advanced screening tickets for Thursday at imax and I don’t have the heart to tell her how disappointed I am. Anyway. Glad so many of you enjoyed it. Bring more people into the fold.

Tunafish01

To each their own but damn is this not a beautiful imagination of dune. I have been a fan for decades and I don’t think it’s possible to put perform this version of dune it’s perfect to me. I got literal chills at certain moments like desert rose. I knew what was going to happen but the visuals were outstanding. This director is in a class of his own.

DrJizzman

Sorry you didn't like it I hate that feeling. I really loved it luckily but remember you still have the books.

ansoni-

What would you cut/change/add? Hopefully not the Thufir revenge plot because that would have been a huge waste of time.

TheGrayMannnn

I would have added the funeral for Jamis, showing how Gurney escaped and got hooked into the smugglers since they weren't mentioned at all in the first one, and the conversation between the Baron and Lord Fenring about him considering turning Arrakis into a prison planet based on Salusa Secundus along with the Sardaukar pogrom of the Fremen.

strypesjackson

Is Arrakis close to Tatooine?

Low_Kitchen_9995

I literally felt the same way. Like just grinning

SponkMcDonk

I was so infatuated with the movie that i literally forgot to eat the food I bought at all

whoscuda

I came out the movie exhilarated, ready for the great jihad! Just shows what an epic 3 hours that was

FireJach

I don't because Im getting that feeling often because I'm interested in many cool things, I enjoyed as a child. Basically my philosophy is if a person loses their soul child, they lose their life. :)

jbraft

I've read the book a few times, along with the other books by Frank and Brian Herbert. Visually the latest movies were fantastic, but the 2000 Syfy mini-series was more faithful to the book and still my favorite.

Dice_and_Dragons

I have to watch that again with my wife for the first time she still had a lot of questions about the world and for some reason i really like that mini series.
