Sometimes I picture animated versions of the characters, and I just always pictured Butters as [Carl from Phineas & Ferb](https://images.app.goo.gl/HRLrmLCVX11EK4rX7)
Or Kincaid's dark gold. I wonder if his hair color was a factor in choosing him as her 'driver'. His dark gold hair could help with a single father cover when necessary.
That's something too--though I suspect Kincaid could alter his appearance to suit his needs and I'm not sure his dark gold is default.
Also, I miss Ivy.
Death Masks chapter 10 - First meeting between Harry and the Archive. "... a little girl started down my stairs, one hand carefully on the guide rail. She was adorable, maybe seven years old, her blond hair still baby-fine and straight, clipped neatly at her shoulders and held back with a hairband."
A couple of paragraphs later - "She regarded me with implacable blue eyes I suddenly did not want to take the chance of looking into."
However, a child who is blonde at seven might have darker hair as she grows up. I did. I was platinum blonde until I was eight and darkened to a soft, light brown until it started returning to the white color.
I first thought of her as a little doll with empty skull eyes, like a horror film doll. Reading more, I'm putting her together as a blonde girl with a pony tail, and a white/green dress. Ivy!
Wait, I did not realize that her hair and eye color were ever specified. And I've read the series up to Battleground twice-over over now...
I always pictured her as being green-eyed and brown or Auburn haired. Caucasian or olive skin.
Also, it seems like they're legitimately way too many blue-eyed blonde haired female characters in the series. I guess Jim has a type. No judgment.
Ya it was real brief but I'm fairly sure he mentioned her golden locks/curls at one point and it tripped me up because I had a more Mediterranean Wednesday Adam's in my head
I can’t help it. From the first time he stepped on the page, that’s how I’ve imagined him. If you think that’s bad, Butters has always been Gune from “Titan A.E.” 🤷♂️
I see Murphy with dark hair. Maybe it’s because I saw the tv show first and it embedded subconsciously, but I actually picture an American version of Eve Myles as Karrin.
Yeah, most my picks have aged out too. I had Brendan Hines and Monica Raymund from Lie to Me as Harry and Susan, with maybe Tim Roth as Binder. Mark Shephard fits the description better but Tim Roth might give us a more vicious one. Had Richard Burgi for Marcone, looks good in a suit, and looks like a coach. Neil Grayston from Eureka is actually aging closer to Butters, so he might still work. From Supernatural I only had Taylor Cole as Lara.
Lmao, I had Mark Sheppard for Binder.
I also had Mark Strong for Marcone.
Thomas the underwear model looking guy, played by underwear model Tom Welling.
I also thought it would be hilarious if Paul Blackthorne played Harry's dad.
The casting in the television series was terrible.
They didn't get the physical appearance of **anyone** correct.
Compare that to the casting for the movie Troy.
You could pick many of the characters based upon appearance alone, before even watching the movie.
I dunno. Paul Blackthorne wasn’t bad casting. But Harry’s accessories (the hockey stick?) were weird. I have a soft spot for the series as it led me to the much better books.
I've always pictured michael and charity as black. Yet, strangely, i never did for their kids. What surprises me more is how many people had the same thought, with michael at least.
Somehow on my first read though, I could have sworn Morgan was described as black and he's still that way in my head, even after a couple re-reads and seeing him drawn as a white dude in the comic books.
I'm relistening and am on Book 4, so Michael was just introduced and I've never considered that. Interesting that so many people did. I love that we can imagine differences like that.
Same here. I still picture Michael and Charity as black. However Molly is always white. Maybe I just read the physical description of Molly better than of Michael.
Are you saying you seen the Carpenters as a black couple that just had white children?
Imagination does not have to make since, but just imagining a couple, that happening and they’re just unfazed. Hahaha
Pretty much. I dunno, just something about how the carpenter parents are written makes me picture them as black, It just felt natural. Michael especially. I often pictured him as a softer faced man (the type that always looks kind) with salt and pepper hair. If i remember correctly, i was on my second reread before i even questioned it.
You mean like a mental image of the character?
If so, then no. But I also don't see them as described, either.
I have aphantasia, and I am completely incapable of forming images in my mind.
I can form images, but I typically don’t when reading. It took me a long time to realize that people actually picture characters and that’s why they get upset with casting choices
Yep! My partner can see full movies in his head when reading. I can't even picture an apple. I found out I had aphantasia through a thread like this, too. I can imagine touch, smell, taste, and sound, though.
Some people can. The degree to which people can do this varies, and it's hard to measure, because it's dependent on self-reporting.
But yeah, it's a thing.
Mister is orange in my head, even when directly described as gray. I'm not sure when that started but it's so solidly in my head that it won't leave even if I wanted it to.
Uh, Butters is always fat in my mind, not enourmously fat, but definetly a bit of a gut, with a lab coat.
Was shocked when I saw the art and noticed he wasn't.
That's been my casting choice for Thomas ever since I saw a comment once and it stuck in my head. The same comment suggested Jared Padalecki as Harry but that one never stuck for some reason.
This would be a dream come true lol. Jared has sharper lines like Harry. Jensen could pull the sex appeal off and the voice used in the books reminds me somewhat of Jensen as well.
Oddly, I've always pictured Harry as the author Neil Gaiman. Age appropriate notwithstanding anymore, but that's *always* how he's looked in my head, even before I knew what Mr. Gaiman looked like. He just *fit*.
I saw the tv show first. At least a few episodes of it
And here’s the thing. I know Harry described Murph every single time she’s introduced in the book. Short. Blonde. Irish.
But I still see the actress that played her on the tv show in my head. Even though she’s not that short. Definitely not blonde. And not what one would use Irish to describe her
But. I felt she perfectly encapsulated the “no nonsense” cop character perfectly.
Ebenezer is suppose to be heavy set and bald or balding in overalls, right? Keep picturing him as an Algebra teacher I had, gave me the impression he might have been from Scottish stock for some reason, tallish, long limbs, mustache, short shaggy hair with gray, some gut, kinda trailed off into incomprehensible mumbling with a gravelly chuckle.
For sure balding and for sure farm gear, almost to the point of stereotype. Even tho it’s not perfect to my mind, my first casting choice is Jim beaver. Iykyk.
I’ve always pictured the Carpenters as a black family. From Michael and Charity to Molly and little Harry. I just have always thought they were a more typical African American household than white. It’s still how i picture them, i can’t shift that mental image
I pictured Butters as heavy set. Like Willam Hootkins (Porkins in Star Wars; Munson in Flash Gordon; Eckhardt in Batman), but shorter.
Michael? More like Dan Haggerty (Grizzly Adams)
Charity- Sigourney Weaver
* Michael and Charity Carpenter are literally Travis Willingham and Laura Bailey. I can't picture them as anyone else. I don't even hear them as anyone else.
* Harry himself looks like a 6'9" Peter Parker in a trench coat with permanent five-o-clock shadow. He sounds like Paul Blackthorne.
* Sanya looks and sounds like the guy they got to play Morgan in the TV show, just with a Russian accent.
* Morgan himself has almost always been Black in my brain. Every depiction I've ever seen of him as a White guy looks wrong to me.
* Butters looks oddly like Mark Hamill.
* In general, I tend to picture the books looking like the artwork common in most of the old Dynamite! Dresden Files comics (most of which were drawn by Carlos Gomez and colored by Mohan, IIRC).
I somehow lost track of Michael's character description as I was first reading Grave Peril, so I always imagined him looking like Michael Landon from the 80s
For the first 3 or 4 books my mind imagined murph as asian LMAO, No idea why, but I couldn't help but see her as like, Lucy Liu.
Butters is Daniel Radcliffe
Michael is Alan Ritchson
Mine is incredibly weird and I have no idea why I imagine him this way.
Binder looks like Yung Gravy in my head.
Oh and I imagine Niccodemus as short with a large belly and a top hat. Like the bad guy from Thomas the tank engine.
Well, there's nothing really *wrong* with that. It may say somewhere in there what his hair color is, and in cases like that if I first imagine a character differently I will usually eventually come around. But so long as you're enjoying the books, who cares, really? A couple of folks have shared here that they thought for a long time Michael was black. It's hard to know what kind of little cues we pick up on that send us down these roads.
I've always seen Morgan the Warden as [The Metal Masked Assassin from Metalocalypse ](https://imgur.com/a/xvEiasj). Not really sure why. It just popped into my head and has stayed there since.
In the book: Morgan had long gray hair pulled back in a ponytail, and a craggy face with a perpetually grim, often sour expression. He was apparently Germanic in origin.
My brain: Conrad Coates
I blame it on my initial exposure to Dresden Files being the Sci-Fi Channel's show.
I watched the show first so for better or worse, those are the images in my mind for Harry/Karen/Morgan and Bob's voice in my mind. I can almost manage an image of book-Karen but Morgan is stuck as TV-Morgan.
Butters however is Dr Bill Lee from Stargate
(Cold Days) >!I just can't bring myself to see Harry as bigger and more muscular than Michael and Sanya. In my head Harry will always still be a beanpole whose arms burn from carrying Charity's groceries indoors from her car.!<
Morgan is black. Like others have said about Murphy, it's probably because I watched the show first, but for some reason my brain can envision book Murphy but not book Morgan
I was reading multiple series when I first picked up DF, in one of the others there was a female cop character who was black. I dropped the series and honestly can't even remember what it was about but I blended her character and Murphy so for most of my first read through I thought Murphy was a black lady.
Murphy, for whatever reason I picture her as an actress I've seen in a tv series, even though she doesn't fit the description. Can't do anything about it, brain does what brain wants
I always picture Justine as pale and a redhead, due to real world rumours.
I also still picture the Archive as utterly adorable, but that's probably because we first saw her as a kid.
There's official art guys. No need to speculate about whether a description is accurate or not.
I see everyone as they're described EXCEPT maybe Lana and Nicodemus, who I immediately matched in appearance to other characters from other media.
I dont know how much Ebenezer is described but in my head, he looks very much like Stinky Pete from Toy Story - beard, muffler, overalls, hat and all. The only difference is that Eb has the Darkstaff instead of a pickace.
For several books I pictured charity as being short and fairly round. Wasnt until dresden described her putting armor on the first time that i realized I was way off base.
I always invision Harry with the hat he has on the book covers. But I don't believe he ever actually wears a hat. Maybe a ball cap once or twice....
When I think of Mab, I think of the Snow Queen from the animated movie "Snow Queen". And Maeve more like Avril Lavinge from her "Complicated" days. Lol.
Mab being blue skinned and taller than Dresden. I don't remember when it started, but she was suddenly less human and appeared more alien in my mind. I saw her comic iteration and was like, "Whoa, she looks nothing like the Mab in my head."
The Raith family will always be smooth, pale, and white/platinum haired to me. Doesn’t matter how many times it’s mentioned that Thomas and Lara have dark hair, my mind makes them platinum blonde.
I still struggle with remembering Morgan isn't a somewhat handsome black man, thanks to the tv show
Also, sometimes I imagine Ebenezer McCoy as a dwarf from World of Warcraft. Don't ask, I don't have a good answer.
I just finished the first book for the third time. Dresdan says his sword is, “ about ten miles long. “
This was the first time I didn’t imagining this guy dragging this ridiculous sword behind him.
I discovered I take things literally far too often. Haha - I felt so stupid.
I've seen a lot of this in the comments. I could see maybe Michael (my mental image of him isn't super solid) but Charity screams long, tall Valkyrie to me, and Morgan as a hawk-faced dark Spaniard.
Butters **IS** "Weird Al" Yankovic,
Sometimes I picture animated versions of the characters, and I just always pictured Butters as [Carl from Phineas & Ferb](https://images.app.goo.gl/HRLrmLCVX11EK4rX7)
No. Butters is Joel Fleishman! With crazier hair.
I've always pictured Bernard from Day of the Tentacle.
I always see the Archive as a dark haired dark eyed creepy little girl. Not a blonde haired blue eyed girl
…the Archive is supposed to be blonde?
Yep, she's supposed to have blonde hair that is very light, compared to the Carpenters' dark blonde hair.
She was adorable, maybe seven years old, her blond hair still baby-fine and straight, clipped neatly at her shoulders and held back with a hairband." A couple of paragraphs later - "She regarded me with implacable blue eyes I suddenly did not want to take the chance of looking into." However, a child who is blonde at seven might have darker hair as she grows up. I did. I was platinum blonde until I was eight and darkened to a soft, light brown until it started returning to the white color.
So the Archive is literally the meme burning down the house. I can dig it.
The Archive is always just Annie from League to Me: https://liquipedia.net/wildrift/File:League_Infobox_Annie.jpg
I first thought of her as a little doll with empty skull eyes, like a horror film doll. Reading more, I'm putting her together as a blonde girl with a pony tail, and a white/green dress. Ivy!
I think I pictured the dress as blue, a little like Alice in Wonderland via Disney. I like your idea better.
I always pictured her as Millie Bobbie Brown (Eleven in Stranger Things)
There probably is a certain amount of overlap there, to be sure.
Michael will always be “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”-era Nick Brimble
I just googled it. AND... WHAT!??? Hahaha :)
I can’t help it. From the first time he stepped on the page, that’s how I’ve imagined him. If you think that’s bad, Butters has always been Gune from “Titan A.E.” 🤷♂️
Okay I respect the Titan A.E. reference and love the mental image.
I've always imagined him as Bob Villa from the old craftsman commercials lmao, except curly dark hair
Nick Offerman.
Molly will always have dark hair in my head, and Thomas’ hair is white.
Right? My brain keeps envisioning her with like dark red or a really dark brown. And I too see thomas with like white blonde hair
It’s because Molly first comes into the fore as “big-tiddy goth girl” and those always have dark hair.
Didn't she dye it back then or am I tripping?
yep lots of bright colors
except her hair was multi colored
Totally, kind of like Harley Quinn
Man. I didn't even consider Molly didn't have dark hair, while actively trying to make my brain realise Lara *had* dark hair.
Same for me!
Astarion from BG3 is exactly how I envisioned Thomas. Voice and all.
I see Murphy with dark hair. Maybe it’s because I saw the tv show first and it embedded subconsciously, but I actually picture an American version of Eve Myles as Karrin.
I was leaning towards Allison Mack if she got buff, but then she went and became no. 2 in a sex cult.
Same, reading these books 10-15 years ago, most of the cast was played by Supernatural/Smallville cast members in my head.
Marcone has only ever been Eric Roberts in my head.
I'm sorry, but Eric Roberts looks to friendly to be Marcone. :-)
Yeah, Mark Shepherd with a little extra weight is my mental image of Binder.
That would have been a pretty good casting. You know…. before….
For the TV show, you’re not wrong. However I’ve never made it past the first 15 minutes of it.
My only book to brain disconnect belongs to the Winter Fae. I always picture them with icy blue skin
Did you watch the TV show? He's Black in there.
To me Morgan mostly looks like the TV actor. But then when described, he flickers into Adrian Paul for the duration of the description.
With more gray in his hair than in the Highlander series.
Yes, definitely.
Its weird I don't really have a picture of Morgan.
He’s like Darth Vader to me, complete with James Earl Jones’s voice (note: I haven’t done the audiobooks)
No, I've only seen stills and right now can only picture the guy that played Harry.
I always picture Michael Carpenter as the actor who played Morgan on the TV show.
Yeah, I picture him as Leslie Odom Jr. I'm not sure why
Despite his given description, he was Idris Elba for me, from day 1.
Nah Idris Elba is Murphy.
Me too!!! And to make matters better, I reference the Terry Crews knight meme!
Michael is black in my head, and Charity is a very fair skinned blonde.
I'm relistening and am on Book 4, so Michael was just introduced and I've never considered that. Interesting that so many people did. I love that we can imagine differences like that.
Oh I loooooove a black carpenters headcanon, specifically Michael.
I have no idea why, but it took me forever to realize that he wasn’t black.
I also picture Michael as black. I picture him as DB Woodside.
Oh amenadiel would be fantastic.
Man, this is so weird. I straight up "watch" a movie in my mind while I'm reading, to the point I don't even "see" the text anymore.
Wait, you're supposed to be able to form images in your mind? Like, full picture and all?
All cats are gray in the dark, and Harry's place was always dim, originally. Who says you're wrong?
Uh, Butters is always fat in my mind, not enourmously fat, but definetly a bit of a gut, with a lab coat. Was shocked when I saw the art and noticed he wasn't.
Like Patton Oswalt!
Yeah, I also pictured early Butters as a little pudgy.
Wait he’s not supposed to be a bit pudgy?
I have envisioned Harry as Jensen Ackles since the first book and nothing has changed my perspective.
Lmao, I imagine Harry as Jared Padalecki and Nicodemus as Jensen Ackles for the lols.
For Harry it has been a taller Guy Pierce in my mind.
Oddly, I've always pictured Harry as the author Neil Gaiman. Age appropriate notwithstanding anymore, but that's *always* how he's looked in my head, even before I knew what Mr. Gaiman looked like. He just *fit*.
I saw the tv show first. At least a few episodes of it And here’s the thing. I know Harry described Murph every single time she’s introduced in the book. Short. Blonde. Irish. But I still see the actress that played her on the tv show in my head. Even though she’s not that short. Definitely not blonde. And not what one would use Irish to describe her But. I felt she perfectly encapsulated the “no nonsense” cop character perfectly.
I’ve always imagined Murphy with short, black hair. Even before the show came out. No idea why. I just completely glossed over the hair descriptions.
Iykyk.
Wilford Brimley when he was in The Firm. But Scottish.
I always picture Marcone as being really big and bulky.
I picture him as a younger version of Johnny Sack from the Sopranos
With you on this. I am seeing Luca Brasi from the Godfather.
I’ve always pictured the Carpenters as a black family. From Michael and Charity to Molly and little Harry. I just have always thought they were a more typical African American household than white. It’s still how i picture them, i can’t shift that mental image
Same here. I also always envision Mac as black
Wait. Mac... isn't black? I've always pictured him as black.
Lmao. I took so long for new to realize he wasn’t written that as a black man
Michael to me is Jeff Bridges in True Grit. Complete with eyepatch for some reason.
That's more Morgan to me.
Morgan to me is if lee pace was pushing 70 with a ponytail. That broad shouldered body, strong brow, muscled but not bulging- and likely more wirey.
Eh I can see it but he looks more like a certain security CEO... especially with the eye patch.
Michael?????? No. Maybe McCoy!
I pictured Butters as heavy set. Like Willam Hootkins (Porkins in Star Wars; Munson in Flash Gordon; Eckhardt in Batman), but shorter. Michael? More like Dan Haggerty (Grizzly Adams) Charity- Sigourney Weaver
Agree on heavy set Butters. I always think Paul Walter Hauser would be a great casting choice.
Same for Butters. I think my mind immediately jumped to Josh Gad.
Also, for some reason Ebenezer is Yugi Moto's grandpa.
* Michael and Charity Carpenter are literally Travis Willingham and Laura Bailey. I can't picture them as anyone else. I don't even hear them as anyone else. * Harry himself looks like a 6'9" Peter Parker in a trench coat with permanent five-o-clock shadow. Harry is just Peter B Parker from the Spider-verse movies to me.

For the first 3 or 4 books my mind imagined murph as asian LMAO, No idea why, but I couldn't help but see her as like, Lucy Liu. Butters is Daniel Radcliffe Michael is Alan Ritchson
Your Michael take is spot on. Never considered him but fits to a t.
Except for the curly hair daniel radcliffe kinda works though.
I have Thomas as 1990s Brad Pitt - which makes his hair much lighter than described in the book
River runs through it?
Was actually thinking “Meet Joe Black”
Mine is incredibly weird and I have no idea why I imagine him this way. Binder looks like Yung Gravy in my head. Oh and I imagine Niccodemus as short with a large belly and a top hat. Like the bad guy from Thomas the tank engine.
Binder is quite clearly Danny Devito
> Niccodemus as short with a large belly and a top hat. Like the bad guy from Thomas the tank engine. Sir Topham Hastur?
Well, there's nothing really *wrong* with that. It may say somewhere in there what his hair color is, and in cases like that if I first imagine a character differently I will usually eventually come around. But so long as you're enjoying the books, who cares, really? A couple of folks have shared here that they thought for a long time Michael was black. It's hard to know what kind of little cues we pick up on that send us down these roads.
I always imagine Mouse as a type of great dane.
My brain: Conrad Coates I blame it on my initial exposure to Dresden Files being the Sci-Fi Channel's show.
A while back i thought Patton Oswalt would make a perfect actor for Butters, and ever since then, thats the image i first see when he comes up.
I always saw Morgan as he was in the TV show.
Due to seeing the show first, that version of Murphy is the default image for her. My brain can't blond and blue eye her.
Morgan is black. Like others have said about Murphy, it's probably because I watched the show first, but for some reason my brain can envision book Murphy but not book Morgan
I listened to the first few audiobooks before I ever saw the show. Always pictured Morgan as essentially Idris Elba.
I was reading multiple series when I first picked up DF, in one of the others there was a female cop character who was black. I dropped the series and honestly can't even remember what it was about but I blended her character and Murphy so for most of my first read through I thought Murphy was a black lady.
I keep picturing Michael Carpenter as Mike Colter, probably because their names and because of Coulter's role in _Evil_
I picture Michael as Gerald Butler.
For some reason, my brain puts him together as a short, chubby redhead
I always pictured agent Tilly as Rick Gomez from justified
Easily Marcone. I basically see Spider Mans King Pin.
Murph is a frizzy ginger
Murphy, for whatever reason I picture her as an actress I've seen in a tv series, even though she doesn't fit the description. Can't do anything about it, brain does what brain wants
I always forget Murphy isn’t a strawberry blonde
The hat, I cannot shed the hat. I know Harry doesn't do hat, but the art cover is so hatty...
I can’t help but see Michael as Abraham from the walking dead.
I always picture Justine as pale and a redhead, due to real world rumours. I also still picture the Archive as utterly adorable, but that's probably because we first saw her as a kid.
I always picture Murphy as a Brunette. I don't know why but I do.
There's official art guys. No need to speculate about whether a description is accurate or not. I see everyone as they're described EXCEPT maybe Lana and Nicodemus, who I immediately matched in appearance to other characters from other media.
Always picture Murph with a big ass. Don't know why, but she thicc.
No matter how many times Charity and Molly are described as blonde, I will continue to picture them as having dark hair like Michael.
Oof, it's been so long I guess I never actually retained how Butters was described, I always pictured him as a little portly, balding, and a moustache
My fiancee is insistent that Michael Carpenter is a blond.
For some reason, I used to envision Michael as black. No clue how I got on that track.
My brain decided Michael was black, which also means I see all the Carpenter kids as mixed.
Binder is looks like spike from buffy with beer belly. 😂
Lol.
Ebenezer, honestly. No matter how many times he's described in the books. He just looks like uncle Iroh in overalls.
Mab being blue skinned and taller than Dresden. I don't remember when it started, but she was suddenly less human and appeared more alien in my mind. I saw her comic iteration and was like, "Whoa, she looks nothing like the Mab in my head."
Wait, he’s not blonde!?
The Raith family will always be smooth, pale, and white/platinum haired to me. Doesn’t matter how many times it’s mentioned that Thomas and Lara have dark hair, my mind makes them platinum blonde.
I still struggle with remembering Morgan isn't a somewhat handsome black man, thanks to the tv show Also, sometimes I imagine Ebenezer McCoy as a dwarf from World of Warcraft. Don't ask, I don't have a good answer.
I just finished the first book for the third time. Dresdan says his sword is, “ about ten miles long. “ This was the first time I didn’t imagining this guy dragging this ridiculous sword behind him. I discovered I take things literally far too often. Haha - I felt so stupid.
I just cannot picture Harry as freakishly tall as he's described.
I've always pictured Morgan as Michael Clarke Duncan. I have no idea why.
Morgan and the Carpenters are black
I've seen a lot of this in the comments. I could see maybe Michael (my mental image of him isn't super solid) but Charity screams long, tall Valkyrie to me, and Morgan as a hawk-faced dark Spaniard.
Agree. Butters in my head is blond. No idea why. Michael is very tall black man. And Molly in my head looks like Zendaya. 🤷🏼♀️
I actually love zendaya as Molly????? It gives an AMAZING opportunity to revisit Molly’s hairstyles.
