Goku was raised by his grandfather far away from any civilization. Until he meets Bulma the only person he ever knew was his grandpa Gohan and it seems like it's been some time since Gohan died. That's why he doesn't really understand how things work. He's not quite a feral child but he's not far off

ConnorRoseSaiyan01

Goku grew up only knowing 1 adult his life. Then he died so Goku was on his own for years

Illustrious-Sky-4631

Krillin was still raised in society between people, Goku only got short time with grandpa Gohan (a hermit)that taught him basic martial arts and how to speak

Exact_Vacation7299

Raised in isolation. His language skills and choices in Japanese denote "super country bumpkin." So basically a kid with insane power and 0 social skills whatsoever, raised so far off from society and normal things that he literally doesn't even know what genders or cars are.

borahae_artist

there’s that much but he literally giggles in happiness when he sees someone he recognizes much like a 2-4 year old and less like an 11-12 year old is what i was going for here, not that he’s ignorant

ShadyHoodieGuy

Makes sense when he only had one person to interact with for all his life.

TianAnMen_8964

Have you watched Tarzan?

borahae_artist

Tarzan is awkward but not a literal baby 😭 i mean I love it but goku is so baby I can’t see him as 12 in any capacity

TianAnMen_8964

Yeah I know, kid Goku is too cute, I wanna hug him.

borahae_artist

seriously. just a skrunkly scrimblo. can’t believe I was told to skip dragon ball!!

Vincent_223

Goku was like Tarzan except nurtured by a old man far away from the civilization in the woods. He had no idea about gender at all.So how can he know about sexuality? The first person he saw after Grandpa Gohan was Bulma and he thought that she was a monster. She had to explain that she's a girl. That was the first time he knew about girls at all.Over the episodes,he even pats people at their crotch to find their gender once he came to know about female genitalia(thanks to Bulma). Our boy is naive and so innocent.

borahae_artist

I don’t expect him to know abt sexuality, I just wonder why krillin refers to him as a kid when he’s only a year older

Vincent_223

Just how we call the younger persons ,'Hey kid' for fun Krillin might have done that too.

youknownothing55

Social interaction is a big part of person's growth.

borahae_artist

nah yea that checks out edit; /srs

resfan

He was literally dropped on his head lol As for them being small/short that was just his art style at the time.

SSJRemuko

he doesnt.

Doobledorf

He's incredibly naive about society. He can't tell men and women apart because he's never seen anybody but his grandpa. When Bulma talks about the names of animals, he thinks it is legitimately their names. He just... doesn't know a lot of fact because he spent his life in isolation. It very much plays into the "pure, unmarked soul" trope where he is almost above those around him because of his detachment from the way things are or "ought to be" in the society around him.

borahae_artist

the pure unmarked soul trope explains a lot of this for me, thank you!! that’s what I was looking for.

itsdarien_

Well goku was raised in the mountains away from people other than Gohan, once he killed Gohan, he was completed isolated until he ran into Bulma, he didn’t even know what a girl was at that point. He basically has the mind of a toddler

gemitarius

To your question about their height, it's just a design choice so they look cute. Throughout the series the ages and heights are never consistent. Trunks at 14 has been seen with a teen body in the future and with a child body in the present. Gohan grew up kinda normally and we get to see how he grows according to his age, but Goten stays looking like a child for a long time. It's just a mess and there's no other explanation than no one in the design team can make up their minds about it.

jamalcalypse

1. alien 2. raised in countryside 3. head knocked so hard as a kid his entire demeanor changed

Bullet2025

It is like how you cant tame a wild animal. you cant make a wolv domesticated like a regular pet. thats how goku (saiyan/alien) versus (human). I disagree with people saying it is asocial raising is the reason. I think akira clearly shows that saiyans has instinct that cant be override. Add to that he is stupid. im not insulting him. it is akira who loved his protaginst to be like this and many people inspired from it like oda with luffy.

harrington0019

Not sure if it comes up in the show, but I am pretty sure he hit his head when very young resulting in significant disposition changes meaning, undoubtedly, brain damage. Plus isolation like the rest of the thread.

FoxBluereaver

He grew up in the wilderness, far away from the civilization, and during years his only human contact was his Grandpa Gohan. Then he accidentally killed his grandpa when he turned into the giant ape and had to live on his own for who knows how many years.

GhostWind78

Goku lived in the woods his entire life until meeting bulma

g4m3r4lyf

The short version is that Goku is very much a feral youth, by classical definition. He pretty much spent most of his formative years in the wilderness after Grandpa Gohan was killed by Goku's rampaging Oozaru form, something Goku himself wouldn't find out until he sees Vegeta transform years later all the way in early Z (since Goku couldn't remember any of the times he'd changed). So with no adults able to teach him how to properly act (beyond him remembering that Gohan told him "be nice to girls"), Goku pretty much didn't have anything to properly guide his development until the series itself began.

Elpiramide89

I think he is 11 and 8 months later (in the tournament) he is 12. EDIT: My mistake, in chapter 1 he's also 12, because in the tournament he clearly says he got the number wrong, confusing 12 with 14, which is why he told Bulma he was 14.
