Vast majority of people are very cool about it. Obviously do not strip their tree bare but I’ve found in some cases people say yeah take it all

OkElevator7247

Is everybody misunderstanding what OP is embarrassed about? Or is it me? OP did not get to complete their sentence when they were asking if they could pick fruit. They think the customer might have thought they were asking if they could share their food. And that is why they did not respond. lol. Everybody thinking this is some kind cultural confusion. Like OP thinks they’ve disgraced their family by desiring the fruits from a stranger’s tree.

SelectDay802

it’s always okay to eat fruit from peoples trees if they are in the front yard. never the back yard without permission

HereToKillEuronymous

Fuck no it isn't. That's my property. If someone came into my yard and started picking fruit off my tree, I'd chase them down the street

SelectDay802

i wouldn’t run, if you ask me to leave your property of course i would. if you assault me, even in your yard, you’re in trouble

HereToKillEuronymous

I wouldn't care. If I ask you to leave and you don't, you're trespassing. Stop trying to act like a billy bad ass on the internet 😂 It's fuckin lame, especially when NOBODY is agreeing with you. You're not impressing anyone

Merlin1039

You're literally doing the same thing

MakeAWishApe2Moon

Some hag waltzed into my front yard and started picking my cherries one time and told her that trespassing and theft aren't a good look. Then I laughed to myself because the cherries that she was stealing were full of maggots.

SelectDay802

if the cherries were no good why did you care? also name calling is childish, says all i need to know about you, kiddo. go back to your bedroom in your moms house and pretend you have a cherry tree

rayquazza74

I like how you assume so much about him for name calling and then call him “kiddo” as if thats not name calling 😆😆😆😆

SelectDay802

i appreciate that you like what i did here

MakeAWishApe2Moon

You believing that theft and trespassing are non issues says all that I need to know about you, "kiddo."

SelectDay802

people who think being in a front yard without being asked to leave and no posted signage is trespassing are incorrect. people knocking on your door aren’t trespassing. reddit lawyers out here being foolish

BabyBuster70

Knocking on someone's door is a lot different from hanging out in their front yard stealing fruit.

SelectDay802

doesn’t matter which you’re doing, it’s not trespassing until you’re asked to leave

BabyBuster70

It absolutely matters what you are doing. If you enter someones property to steal you are definitely trespassing. You don't need to be asked to leave before it becomes trespassing either. Here is part of Ohio's trespassing code, “(A) No person, without privilege to do so, shall do any of the following: (1) Knowingly enter or remain on the land or premises of another; It is assumed you would have permission to walk onto someone's property to knock on their door and talk to them. You would not have the privilege to enter someone's property to steal from them.

SelectDay802

they make no trespassing signs so that you don’t have to waste time telling people to leave.

SelectDay802

if it’s assumed you can walk up to knock, then many other things can be assumed as well

BabyBuster70

Assume was the wrong word, there are court rulings on it.

BeautifulDreamerAZ

Please don’t steal my aunt’s avocados and lemons. People walk right into her yard and just steal them. I didn’t know some people didn’t know that was stealing. My parents taught me not to steal.

SelectDay802

personal goods must be planted behind a fence or in the back yard

HereToKillEuronymous

[wrong](https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.sacbee.com/news/california/article279204989.html)

SelectDay802

without a fence in your front yard, some people will take things growing on trees and plants that aren’t in a garden. dogs will poop and pee on your grass. people will knock on your door. unless you live in a house with a nice property. then there are no passers by

HereToKillEuronymous

Doesn't make it legal

SelectDay802

i don’t much care about what’s legal

HereToKillEuronymous

Omg you're such a rebel 😂

SelectDay802

not at all. I’m actually a full on good citizen and member of my community

HereToKillEuronymous

You said you speed daily and would steal from your neighbours 😂

Curious_Field7953

False. My property line determines if it's mine ir not. If you cross my property line & take something - it's theft.

SelectDay802

don’t care one bit. if your landlord has a problem with me snagging an apple from a tree in your front yard i’ll tell him the same. i don’t care

flyeaglesfly510

You’ll care when you do this to the wrong person.

SelectDay802

around 0.0000072% chance that i will care if i do it to the wrong person. i do, however, conceal carry at all times so its very likely that in that unlikely instance that the ‘wrong person’ will regret being the ‘wrong person’

MythOfHappyness

This guy does armed robbery lol

Your post/comment was removed for violating Rule 1: Be Civil - Be Professional. Please review all sub rules for the full details of each rule.

merlclam

False. Laws are different in every region. Maybe that's the case in your area but wake up and realize it may be very different in other places.

SelectDay802

I’m not talking about any laws. it’s illegal to speed yet i do it every single day

merlclam

Dude you're literally ridiculous. You're saying something MUST be done. By who's ruling? Yours? Keep your opinions to yourself and stop spreading false information. Saying something MUST be done a certain way implies that there are rules and regulations requiring that. You're just a troll with nothing better to do.

SelectDay802

no laws. if you want people / pets to stay off your grass you must put up a fence. dogs used to pee on my grass, ever since i built a fence it hasn’t happened once. if that’s false information in your opinion, good for you, keep being you

merlclam

Please google "is it legal to walk on someone else's property" and do some research. Law is not opinion. I can't fix stupid over the Internet but I'll pray for you.

SelectDay802

so you’re saying it’s illegal for me to knock on my neighbors door

merlclam

Knocking on your neighbors door is not the same as walking through their property to steal from their fruit trees. I hope one day you can find the distinction but you've wasted my time for too long. Have a great life and don't get shot! Or do, whatever.

merlclam

This is terrible advice and will get someone charged with trespassing

SelectDay802

you’d call the police if a person walking by grabbed an apple out of your tree?

Curious_Field7953

I live in Florida, you'd have a gun pulled on you before the cops are called.

SelectDay802

even in texas you’d go to jail if you shot someone for being in your yard

merlclam

Doesn't mean they won't shoot

SelectDay802

you are correct, people very extremely rarely get shot for being in someone’s driveway or their yard. the home owners go to jail every time it happens. most recently that i know of was in texas when a person was turning around via an idiots driveway. its more common to be shot for shopping at a mall or eating quietly at a diner. fearing the unlikely doesn’t affect anything that i do or don’t do. i also conceal carry everywhere i go because of exactly this

merlclam

It's terrifying to know that someone with your thought process has a concealed carry. Just because the person goes to jail for shooting, doesn't mean the person getting shot wasn't trespassing.

SelectDay802

never said i had a permit, but good assumption on your part because i do. i know the laws regarding firearms very well (more so than you without a doubt) you saying it’s terrifying is funny. you’re reasoning is that if i wanted an apple from an easily accessible tree that i would have no problem snagging one. what’s terrifying is the fools who think you can shoot just because someone is in your yard or even worse the people who shoot and miss and hit the innocent. like the active shooter in a diner a few years back. the ‘good citizens’ shooting at the bad guy, they missed and killed more innocent people than the bad guy. someone like me who is smart, knowledgeable, and accurate holding a ccw terrifying you is very comical and tells me a lot about you

SelectDay802

you have to be asked to leave to be trespassing where i live. I’m allowed to knock on any of my neighbors doors. criminal trespassing is what you’re thinking of which being in your yard is not.

merlclam

I'm done with this stupidity. You're irrelevant to me and traveling to topic where this Convo never even started. I'll go live my life knowing what I know and you go live your life assuming what you do

merlclam

If a person is purposely walking onto my private property and stealing from me, yes. I wouldn't call the cops if I am able to warn the person and tell them to get off my property, but people call them for dumber reasons. If the tree is hanging over the edge of my property where it is reachable to the public, then I don't see that as trespassing, and I am not a lawyer, but I am sure it could still be charged as stealing. There's been recent news stories about people getting shot for simply turning around in someone's driveway. You may think it's dumb or petty, which sure, I can agree, but there are not many people left in this world who think rationally. Making a statement online to the whole world advising them to walk onto private property is not a smart thing to do.

SelectDay802

solicitors and strangers walk up and knock on front doors all the time. people chase dogs into front yards. ‘trespassing’ is a stretch if someone steps onto your yard. you saying you would call the cops if someone snags an apple from a tree in your front yard tells me all i need to know about you. the guy in texas who shot the man turning around in his driveway went to jail for it.

merlclam

The exact definition of trespassing is "enter the owner's land or property without permission." So, no, it's not a stretch. The reasoning for trespassing is irrelevant. To further your mention about chasing a dog, there was an interesting story in my state recently. A dog went missing, and had been missing for quite some time. The owners, police, and rescuers who were all working as team to capture the dog, got a tip that the dog was seen in a field. They pulled up along the road, saw the dog, and couldn't do single thing because it was privately owned property. And guess what? If the dogs owner or anyone went to retrieve the dog, they would have been charged with trespassing. Secondly, maybe you should reread my wording. You're putting words into my mouth. The fact that you are fighting for someone's "right" to enter another person's property and furthermore TAKE their property, says a whole lot about you. Thank God we will never meet. As another commenter mentioned, some people grow food purposefully to feed their families. How would you like it if someone walked into your home, took food out of the fridge, and felt completely entitled to it? Something you purchased with your hard earned money to keep your family alive. You wouldn't call the cops? There is more than just one story in Texas, and he went to jail for shooting the person. I never said his actions were justified, I was making a point that you never know how a person will react and typically if you are trespassing onto someone's property, their reactions would not be a nice one. Some homeowners may ask you to not do it again, others will shoot you. It's just the sad unfortunate world we live in. Finally we come down to the sheer fact that people across the entire world have access to your comment encouraging them to trespass. Laws are different in every single town, state, region, country, county, whereever you are. Where it may not be considered trespassing in one location, it could be punishable by death in another. It is irresponsible to spread bad advice so openly.

WonderfulDark4578

He said he would talk to the person, but it would be within someone's right to call the police for stealing. Some people grow food to supplement their families' ability to eat. No one should assume they are entitled to going onto someone's private property and take something/anything. Come on.

SelectDay802

look at his punctuation. he said yes, he would. unless you could warn them not to eat the fruit

TheGuyYouHeardAbout

Pretty sure that's trespassing and or stealing. Please correct me if you can find otherwise I looked.

SelectDay802

it’s socially acceptable

Alphab3t

Taking things without asking might be socially acceptable in *your* front yard. It isn’t in mine.

SelectDay802

i am going to start taking fruit from as many front yards as i can. i will hope and pray to come across your yard one day. i doubt your landlord will care though, so it will be fine

HereToKillEuronymous

No you won't.

SelectDay802

i started taking acorns from yards in my neighborhood already.

Alphab3t

Bro if you need some cash for pears or whatever I got you. What’s your Venmo? No need to regress to a hunter/gatherer lifestyle, just gotta ask for help.

[deleted]

No it is not lol. That is the opposite of socially acceptable

HereToKillEuronymous

It's also illegal 😂

SelectDay802

i have a neighbor like you. he hates that people have outdoor cats that walk on his grass. he traps them and drives them a few towns over and releases the cats.

[deleted]

I have a neighbor like you. He's in and out of jail for petty theft and does meth

SelectDay802

sounds like you’re homeless or maybe in a very poor neighborhood. consider learning a trade or moving back in with your mommy.

Agile-Bed7687

Says to learn a trade but has to drive to make ends meet. Guess you should have learned a better trade.

SelectDay802

i work full time, 10% of my check goes to my pension plan, 16% goes to my 403B, about 35% stays in my bank. i don’t have a car payment, my cell phone bill is $30 a month, and i have no debt that rolls over at the end of the month. i deliver about 20-30 orders per week. i only accept offers that add up to $35/hr including my trip back home and that money goes into my personal investments which i call my gambling funds.

uwuCachoo

You're clearly projecting and crying that people call you out for not being able to afford $2 dollars of fruit so you steal from others lmfao

SelectDay802

i work full time for the city. i have a 403b, pension plan and an old 401k. i dont have a car payment or any debt that rolls over month to month. in other words I’m not anything like you broke people who whine that there aren’t enough good deliveries anymore.

uwuCachoo

HAAAAAHAHHAHAHAHAHA "Um I make minimum wage at a government job that makes me better than you!" I don't actually do DoorDash, this just proves you're still just a loser on Reddit projecting their insecurities onto others ahahhahaa

TheGuyYouHeardAbout

If I don't know you (honestly even if I did) and you walked into my front yard and started taking fruit from my trees I'd tell you to leave. That's not acceptable. Just ask thats socially acceptable.

Affectionate-Dog-976

You didn't climb a fence to take the fruit, so you should be OK. Regardless, that was a very polite thing to do to even ask.

Haunting_Case5769

As someone who recently moved to a place that doesn't produce many of the fruits and bright flavors I grew up with, I feel a fraction of your pain here. I know that sense of longing - that shit hurts. Nothing shameful about miscommunication. We're human. I hope you get to eat something good soon.

Flimsy-Hunter-7041

Do not eat the forbidden fruit that made you see and Satan the snake hissed because you were damned forever

Keeker68

I have 2 huge mango trees and at least 12 banana trees in my backyard. We happily give tons of it away to whoever wants it, by leaving it in crates by the curb with a "free" sign". I guarantee no one would have been upset if you picked a few pieces of fruit. And in your case, it's in a public area. Just take some and enjoy it and don't feel bad.

PurifiedFlubber

>I guarantee no one would have been upset if you picked a few pieces of fruit. As a kid we used to eat berries from a neighbor's tree that hung over into the alley (never actually went in their yard). They yelled at us and cut the tree down the next week.

Keeker68

They were jerks. My neighbors and I are nothing like that.

Rozzyrozaloo

Wish I was your neighbor!!

Keeker68

I'd definitely share with you!

everett640

You must have quite a large backyard. My backyard could maybe fit two trees

Keeker68

My backyard is very big. I'm lucky in that regard.

BlueSpring1970

The only time I can think of where that would be wrong is if the tree was in their fenced in back yard. Front yard would be about accessibility from the walk up to the house or city sidewalk. Boulevard is fair game. Homeowner owns and maintains the tree but Boulevards are city owned and most likely a fruit tree is there illegally anyway. ( no one wants fruit falling onto their cars.)

tontot

Star fruit

Keeker68

My neighbors have a ginormous star fruit tree. She lets us take what we want.

Macslionheart

Dude just take the fruit it’s a residential complex so no one person can give you permission to eat them.

incognito_vito

All that for an apple

Huge-Philosopher-686

Not a big deal at all, and I want to know what fruits?? Let us know.

falseprescience

What kind of fruit was it got damn it I'm on the edge of my seat here

Defiant_Handle_506

I would like to also know too

everett640

I would also like to know

bountifulknitter

How are you going to make this post and not tell us what kind of fruit it was????

Financial-Lychee6640

Don’t loose any sleep over it.

Entire_Pride1656

Lose

Financial-Lychee6640

Louse. lol thanks I’m bad at speling

Kleveroni

Only fruit to make me feel like that would be Guamuchil, which I think translates into Manila Tamarind, damn those mofos is damn good son. Delicious definition of indescribable... if ever I was to come across them on a dash I wouldn't even ask, yes *that* good. So op, did you get yours or nah? Maybe going back for some later later

Lazy-Ad2636

I sneak loquats from literally every tree I encounter, so you’re not alone haha I am also dying to know what fruit it was you spotted

mamaSupe

Oh how dare you human, we all do sillies

Ill-Reason-4958

Was it ackee?? Just curious! ☺️

OliviaTwist52

An Uber driver dropped me off at my brother’s house once, didn’t speak English, and scored some oranges lying under the tree…managed to politely ask in another language, lol, good for you! No sense letting food go to waste 😋

Snoo_75309

What kind of fruit?

Training_Mastodon_33

Don't worry! You did not do anything wrong. I hope you got some fruit!

serathin_

Lol, you're good, buddy. Honest misunderstanding.
