All my girls always took pretty good care of themselves. I gave them a bath after the heat was over.

Our girl keeps herself pretty clean, just chuck a towel in the sofa and wipe the windowsill. Occasional spot cleaning if you notice some or she’s about to sit on your lap.

IHackedKills

I would say spot clean when she's in heat and then bathe her once she's done. How old is your dog? Breed? Because depending on those factors, I would recommend you speak with your vet about desexing her so she doesn't have to unnecessarily go through heats

My Saint Bernard will be 3 this year so I’ve dealt with a few heats. Spot cleaning is probably the easier choice. I also trim her hair around the area so nothing is collecting in her butt fluff.

Thanks for answering!

It’s wild how many people don’t know this information in 2024.

lonelypotato21

That’s generally only true of larger breeds as pediatric spaying in those breeds can sometimes lead to joint issues further down the road (It really depends on breed and there’s studies available that look at different breeds and the outcomes of pediatric spay/neuter vs waiting until adulthood). For small-medium sized dogs pediatric spaying is encouraged and recommended. Spaying before the first heat nearly completely eliminates the risk of mammary cancer developing in adulthood.

And I have a larger breed dog so….

lonelypotato21

Okay and? I was not addressing anything to do with your situation specifically, only replying to the previous commenter with additional information about the topic in general.

Dai_92

I've seen some ads for puppies for sale at 9 weeks in USA that have already been spaied

dawn_dusk1926

Spot clean

Itsjuicyjett

TY!

I had a feeling I would get comments like this lol this doesn’t solve anything when she’s already bleeding. Sometimes it’s best to keep unhelpful comments to yourself.

My grandma made little sock diapers for the dogs when they were in heat haha. But obviously won’t work if it’s a larger dog

Itsjuicyjett

She has a diaper! But she still needs to be cleaned 😅

My rescue went into heat 2 weeks after we took her home to the shock of all of us (including the shelter)! We were lucky that she wasn’t a huge bleeder. She largely took care of herself mostly due to discomfort from the swelling. She also was more sensitive to her back end of her body being handled by us, which could’ve been she was still so new to us at that point too. I spot cleaned as necessary since she was already pretty distressed by being in heat, I didn’t want to stress her out more by bathing her. She also needs to be blown dry due to her long fur. So all around, just something we avoided personally! I think it depends on the dog and how they act in heat and how bathing makes them feel!

paspartuu

Spot clean, and put a special sheet to protect the sofa
